Season 1:

     Episode 1 - Unauthorized Magic

  • The first scene cuts between Quentin talking to a psychiatrist in a mental hospital and him being awkward at a party, ending in him saying he wants to check out of the hospital.
Quentin: Look, I've never threatened to hurt myself or anybody else. So you can't make me stay. [Beat] Can you?
  • Quentin's introduction to Eliot:
  • This exchange, after Quentin is told that the man who was supposed to carry out his interview for Brakebills died from eating a box of Oreos:
    Quentin: Magicians can't have Oreos?
Dean Fogg: Diabetics can't have Oreos.
  • When seeing two of the remaining students of the third-year class, Eliot and Margo "explain" what happened. It doesn't reassure Quentin at all.
Eliot: That is what's left of the third-year class. Were 20, now 4. No one knows why.
    Quentin: They're just gone?
    Margo: Rumor has it, killed.
Eliot: Or flunked or got bored or died 16 perfectly natural deaths. Whatever.
  • Eliot, on Brakebills' touching devotion to student safety. He's probably paraphrasing, but you never know.
Eliot: We all signed this waiver. Hope you read yours. It says, "Spell work is not unlikely to murder you, and if so, oh, well."
  • After Eliot calls a couple of psychic twins "losers":
Twins: (telepathically) We heard that. Eat shit, Eliot.

Episode 2 - The Source of Magic

  • As Quentin's on his way to return his books since he's getting expelled, Eliot finds him and they talk about the fact that Quentin's going to have his memories erased and how he doesn't want to go back to the "depressed super-nerd" that he was. Eliot's solution doesn't go over well.
Eliot: How about I find you, and I don't say magic is real, but I do seduce you, and so lift your spirits that life retains its sparkle for decades.
Quentin: ...Yeah, that sounds nice. Thank you.

Episode 3 - Consequences of Magic

  • The Physical Cottage door is always locked as a simple test. Kady tries knocking for a few minutes, but eventually just blasts the door down.
    • Eliot and Quentin are sitting on the couch and Eliot's pouring wine when Kady does that and startles both of them badly enough that Eliot spills the wine and yells "oh shit" at almost maximum volume. And still gets drowned out by the explosion.
  • Quentin and Eliot spend half the episode trying to track down volume 1 of a pair of magic books, using volume 2, which wants to get back to her mate. When they reunite, they... mate. To which Eliot comments "Love wins."
  • Penny comes up to confront Quentin on the university grounds... because he overheard him singing Taylor Swift songs in his head and wants him to shut up.

Episode 4 - The World in the Walls

  • While it turns dark quickly, Quentin's reaction to the nightmare, and his annoyance at the fact that his magic doesn't work, is worth a chuckle.
Quentin: I hate these kinds of dreams.
  • Asylum!Alice is... difficult to follow, but she seems convinced that the whole place is a People Zoo run by aliens, where she and the other patients will be forced to breed. She is not entirely averse to the idea of breeding with Quentin.
  • The horrendous rendition of "Shake it Off" that Quentin sings inside the nightmare is hilarious. Especially the Funny Background Event of Eliot motorboating Alice. The $50,000 spent to get the rights to the song was worth every cent. And you can tell that Jason Ralph was having way too much fun with it, strutting like a peacock and flipping his hair every which way.
  • When Penny first enters Quentin's mind, he finds a version of himself as a goody two-shoes patient with a thick Indian accent and stereotypical Indian mannerisms. Remember that everything is created by Quentin's subconscious.
    Penny: You. Racist. Mother. Fucker!

Episode 5 - Mendings, Major and Minor

  • Eliot and Margo describe the magical game as just a collection of ridiculous rules kept around out of tradition, subverting the expectation that we'd be looking at a new Quidditch.
  • Margo reminds Quentin that magic is powered by pain when he's upset about his dad.
Margo: Please tell me someone has pointed out to you that magic doesn't come from sunshine and ice cream.
    • She also tells him that the best way to get what he wants is to be so miserable he doesn't want it anymore.
Quentin: What kind of system is that? You know, why can't it run on... love? Or cocaine? Or something.
Margo: It's the universe deep-dicking us. Lie back and try and enjoy it.
  • Cancer Puppy's real name is apparently Gerald but everyone calls him Cancer Puppy. Eliot also explains why he's called that.
Quentin: Why does he have cancer?
Eliot: Because he's 150, Quentin. The enchantment just keeps him a puppy forever. It doesn't stop him from being riddled with every disease it's possible to be riddled with.
  • Eliot's comment about how they've been taking Cancer Puppy to a "very confused veterinarian" in Ogdensburg.
  • Eliot of all people getting hit with Cuteness Proximity and falling into a baby-talk tone of voice when holding Cancer Puppy.
  • In the best Crosses the Line Twice moment of the series, Quentin kills Cancer Puppy while testing out a spell that might cure him.

     Episode 6 - Impractical Applications

  • Upon finding out that Penny was in Fillory, Quentin immediately starts nerding out. Penny is less than impressed.
  • When Quentin is first kidnapped for the Trials, Margo pretends it's for a Virgin Sacrifice.
    Quentin: ...I'm not a virgin.
Margo: Well. The world's just full of surprises.
  • In the second test, Quentin is supposed to catch a fish and is provided a bow, Penny is supposed to catch a horse and is provided an ax, Kady is supposed to catch a pheasant and is provided a net, and Alice is supposed to fell a tree and is provided rope. And yes, they all try and use these tools for their assigned tasks before realizing they're supposed to work together. The best is the brief glimpse of Alice having rigged up some bizarre system of knots and leverage in an attempt to pull down an old-growth tree.
  • The blooper reel has clips of Jason (Quentin's actor) slipping and falling in the creek in increasingly ridiculous ways while Arjun (Penny) taunts him.
  • When splitting up the tasks between them, Penny says his task is to get a horse. Quentin is the one who picks up the rope to do it.
    Penny: Seriously?
    Quentin: What? Junior cowboy camp.
    • After the tasks are split up and we see the other three either working or completing their tasks, it cuts to Quentin leading the horse out of the woods. And he's injured.
      Alice: You're bleeding.
Quentin: I hated junior cowboy camp.
  • After the four work together to complete the second test, Margo and Eliot reappear and explain that to finish the test they need to chop up the tree for firewood, cook the fish and the pheasant, and then take turns blowing the horse. They're joking, of course, but considering the rest of the episode, for a second it's believable they might actually make them do it.
Margo: Did you see the look on Quentin's face?
Eliot: Like, "Fine, but I'm not going first."

Episode 7 - The Mayakovsky Circumstance

  • Mayakovsky's initial speech.
Mayakovsky: A magician must be magic! In his blood, in his bones, in his heart, in his dick!
    Kady: [makes a face]
    Mayakovsky: Or, lady parts. Whatever.
  • After Mayakovsky cuts off Penny's anti-teleport tattoo, he makes Penny teleport over and over again while he watches, bored, drinking Vodka. At one point, Penny comes back covered in smoking ash.
Penny: [horrified] I was in a volcano!
Mayakovsky: But you survived! Very good. Again.
  • Margo and Eliot need a gift for the hosts of a massive party they're going to, but dismiss last year's gift (a living bag of dicks) as lame. So, they decide to make magic Gin. Except because they didn't really know what they were doing, they ended up with a djinn, a genie, under Margo's control. First thing he does is teleport away Eliot's new boyfriend due to Margo's unspoken wish that he "go back where he came from and suck on some other knob." They find him in the library where they first met him, sucking on a doorknob.
Margo: [smirking] So literal. [pets bottle]

Episode 8 - The Strangled Heart

  • Alice's Double Take when she realizes that Quentin kept count of every time they had sex while on Brakebills South.
Alice: What we did was stress and circumstances, and pheromones.
Quentin: The first time, but not the next four.
    Alice: You were...counting?
Quentin: Of course I was counting.
  • After Penny teleports into a class, the teacher chews him out, and he responds by trying to seduce her. It comes very close to working. The fact that he was wet and shirtless at the time helped.
  • Turns out Eliot is actually from Indiana. From a farm in Indiana.
  • Mike claims the only country he knows much about is Texas.
    Eliot: ...Texas isn't a country.
Mike: [sad smile] It is when you're from Texas.
  • Eliot tries to figure out an outfit for when he's seeing Mike again and makes the mistake of asking Quentin for help.
Eliot: I have nothing to wear.
Quentin: You don't think that might be, I don't know, hyperbole?
    • At least Eliot's aware it was a bad decision:
Eliot: [holds up two completely different vests]
Quentin: Honestly, all vests look the same to me.
Eliot: ...I made a horrible mistake asking you to help. Please leave.
      Quentin: I was here first!
  • Penny mentions that he saw Quentin and Alice's "little little" tryst in the snow. Quentin insists he was above average for a fox, and the others just roll their eyes.
  • When they're trying to figure out why someone would attack Penny and Quentin, Penny notes that it would make perfect sense if they were trying to attack Quentin, since, "I want to stab you all the time."
  • While talking to Penny, Quentin asks if there's anyone Penny wants him to call. Penny cracks a smile at Quentin's suggestions.
    Quentin: Parents, siblings... Parole officer?

Episode 9 - The Writing Room

  • Quentin and Alice use a spell to find the sixth Fillory book. It leads them to Penny, who had insisted back in the pilot that he didn't know anything about it. Turns out he stole it because he was bored, read it, spilled beer on it, threw it out, and got another beer. Quentin is hilariously pissed.
  • Quentin forces Penny to try and remember what he read. He gets as far as Jane hunting down a talking animal, but switches from a dog, to a pig, to a ferret, doing a stupid little voice for it every time.
  • When the gang is taking the tour of the Plover house, not only does Quentin prove more knowledgeable than the tour guide, but he keeps taking selfies and practically vibrating with glee.
Penny: You will never be a man.
  • Eliot's flask never runs out.
  • When the team needs to intimidate the tour guide when they're in the house after hours, Eliot just rolls his eyes, summons a tiny ball of lightning, and says "I'm a supervillain." It's less impressive than the sparks Julia showed Quentin in the third episode, but the tour guide is still completely terrified.
  • When they find the button and bring it back to the school, Penny is the only one who can feel magic on it. He goes to touch it, and Quentin warns him off. Penny scoffs, claiming that as a Traveler trained by Mayakovsky himself, he has complete control over when and where he teleports. He touches it and promptly disappears. Then the episode ends.
Quentin: I told him not to do that.

     Episode 10 - Homecoming

  • Penny contacts Quentin, and finds himself in the middle of one of Q's sex dreams, specifically one featuring a three-way with Alice (dressed like Daenerys) and Julia (dressed like slave Leia), and Quentin walks in dressed like Indiana Jones. For once, Penny is actually impressed.
Penny: I think you might be some kind of savant.
Quentin: Must you ruin everything in my life?
    • From the same scene:
Alice: If you would just shut up for about for two seconds, this sex dream would pass The Bechdel Test.
  • When Quentin is relating the story to Alice, for some reason he feels the need to mention the fact that it was a sex dream with the three of them, then hastily tries to back out of it.
Quentin: Dreams are weird, there are talking animals smoking—whatever.
  • Eliot starts the episode drugged out of his mind, even by his standards.
Eliot: [eyes wide open] Guys just answer me this: Are my eyes open or closed right now? [eyes still open] How about now?
    • When assessing Eliot's condition, Professor Lipson says that he's fine. She admits Eliot has a massive drug problem, but decides to look on the bright side: at least Eliot is medicating.
  • Alice's parents are sex-crazed magicians in the middle of a Roman-style orgy when she and Quentin arrive. It takes Amazingly Embarrassing Parents to a new level.
  • Alice's father offers Quentin a filleted goat penis. "It promotes virility!"
Alice: [deadpan] That's very thoughtful, Dad.
    • Then Quentin drags him into another room so that Alice can speak to her mother alone.
Alice's father: But you haven't even touched your penis...
Quentin: You know what? I- I had a ton of it yesterday...
  • Margo starts getting sick, and it turns out she is a little bit cursed due to taking place in an "unprotected ritual." When she goes to confront her ex-boyfriend over it, it turns out he made a golem of her, but botched the spell a bit. Eliot promptly dubs the clone "Margolem."
  • Margo was planning to destroy the Margolem, but ends up keeping it, which results in it kissing Eliot for no real reason.
  • The spell to create a beacon to bring Penny back is a sex spell, and it requires simultaneous orgasms. The one teaching it asks if that's going to be a problem; Quentin says no while Alice hedges.
  • The very end, when Alice and Quentin have cast the spell, Penny has seen the beacon and jumped back in the Earth fountain... only to arrive to find them still having sex. He just rolls his eyes.
  • Stop and think about the title of the episode. Hint: It's a pun.

Episode 11 - Remedial Battle Magic

  • From the very first scene.
Margo: Can we go back to the part where you popped in on them banging?
Alice: It was for a spell.
    Margo: No judging.
  • When they finish the probability spell, it cuts to all of them in the living room of the cottage, surrounded by trash cans. When they wake up, Margo, of all people, immediately leans over and pukes into hers.
    • Alice doesn't handle the spell well, either.
      Quentin: You okay?
Alice: Yeah, I'm just a little shaky. I don't like dying.
      Quentin: No kidding.
  • After the probability spell, Penny mentions that in the last potential future, he got his head ripped off in the Neitherlands by the Beast.
Eliot: Well, this was a dead end.
Quentin: Well, I hate to say I told you so, but... You know what? Actually, I don't. I don't.
  • Alice agrees with Quentin that they should try to go to Fillory because it's the only potential future that doesn't end in certain death.
Margo: That's because he blows you.
  • Margo and Quentin are discussing learning battle magic, and mention that it's dangerous and illegal. Eliot walks up and immediately agrees to join. "I heard the word 'illegal'."
  • Quentin is ecstatic that one of the battle magic spells is literally a magic missile.
Quentin: That's straight up Dungeons & Dragons!
  • Kady and Julia find a vampire through an informant, and the vampire demands to know how much they gave her. Julia admits all it cost was twenty bucks.
Julia: Guess it wasn't true love after all.
  • The ritual to remove emotions turns everyone into hilariously deadpan automatons.
Penny: [to Quentin] I like your sweater.
Quentin: Are you saying that to be cruel?
Penny: No. I like your sweater, I saw no reason not to share.
    Quentin: Well then.
  • Kady and Julia go to confront a lamia with knives dipped in gold and silver, coated in shark's blood. The lamia is impressed, but complains that it's overkill.
Julia: We weren't sure which legends were true.
Lamia: I hate Ivy League girls.
  • The aftermath of the first round with the emotion bottles has everyone's emotions returning much stronger than they were than they were bottled. Some of it's sad, like Margo being upset about her and Eliot not really talking anymore and Eliot immediately starts chainsmoking and drinking. Quentin's depression hitting him twice as hard is almost sad, but it, Penny laughing hysterically and Alice sobbing are all done in an incredibly over-the-top manner.
  • When Alice and Quentin talk the next morning, Quentin's completely blase tone almost falls into black comedy.
Alice: You have diagnosed depression. We shouldn't be bottling you up; you could—
Quentin: [in a 'been there, done that' tone] Kill myself?
  • When the search for gods hits a dead end, Julia asks Richard what the plan is. He goes off on a rant about how he's going to keep trying no matter what, but she's free to leave if she wants. Julia points out that she's not leaving; they're in her house. Everyone else starts laughing, and Richard gets a look on his face saying "Oh crap, I completely forgot you're the host."
  • Quentin and Margo attempt to get a very drunk Eliot to bed.
Eliot: [singsong] We are going to Filloryyyyy! [gasps] Oh my god! [looks at Quentin] You're Toto. [looks at Margo] And you are Dorothy. And I'm flying Muppets.
    [Beat]
    Eliot: Meerkats.
    [Beat]
Eliot: No, wait, that's not it. [falls into bed and immediately starts snoring]
    • When Eliot says he's Toto, Quentin looks absolutely offended.

    Episode 12 - Thirty-Nine Graves

  • The aftermath of the Margo/Eliot/Quentin threesome is mostly heartbreaking, but Penny's reactions are hilarious because no one will tell him what's going on.
Penny: What the fuck did I walk into?
  • After Alice has sex with Penny, Quentin is (rightly) angry. But before they leave for the Neitherlands, everyone but Penny bottles up their emotions again, which changes his perspective a bit.
Quentin: I know a moment ago I was mad, but I really think you two would make a cute couple.
  • When the librarian is listing the rules of the Library, she mentions "no food, drink, or intoxicants," then glares at Eliot. He grudgingly pulls out his flask, but she has to tug a few times to get him to let go.
  • The librarian counts emotion bottles under intoxicants, as "They always make a mess." So she takes them and breaks them, making everyone stumble as they get their emotions back. Margo's reaction is the biggest, though.
Margo: I BUILT AN OUTFIT AROUND THAT BOTTLE!
  • Quentin informs Dean that he dosed him with a truth potion by asking him how he lost his virginity. Dean was twenty-four and too embarrassed to tell anyone, but he somehow attracted an older, much more experienced woman.
  • After Dean explains that Jane has been looping time to try and destroy the Beast, Quentin immediately asks if it's some sort of "blood-soaked Groundhog's Day."
Dean: You always bring up that fucking movie. I still haven't seen it. Now it's a point of pride.
  • Julia shows Quentin the statue the goddess gave her to prove her divinity. It's crying... but not water.
    Quentin: Is that milk?
Julia: Yeah, it's cool. ...and gross. And useless.
  • Julia admits that her recent religious experience makes her sound like a nutjob. Quentin agrees.
  • The Library of the Neitherlands is basically a hard copy of the internet.
Margo: There's a whole wing on cat paintings.
  • Some Brakebills students went back in time to kill Hitler. Apparently, he's a serious battle magician, so he of course killed them.
  • When Julia and Quentin realize they can use the kill Hitler time portal to ultimately kill the Beast.
Quentin: Never thought I'd say it, but thank God for Hitler.
Julia: No... it still sounds bad.
  • The Librarian calls Margo "Janet". Because she read the book.

Episode 13 - Have You Brought Me Little Cakes

  • Quentin is writing his own Fillory book, and acts as a Lemony Narrator the entire episode.
  • Turns out the atmosphere of Fillory is 0.02% opium. As Quentin notes, that's kind of a cheating way to get you to like a place.
  • When they realize that the moonstone blade that took seventy years to make and is needed to kill the Beast can only be wielded by a master magician... and none of them are. For a split second, it looks like Penny can use it when he picks it up, but it burns him too.
    Penny: I HATE THIS PLACE!
  • Eliot finds out he's going to be High King of Fillory (Fillorian royalty can only be humans from Earth).
Eliot: Well, High King. Makes certain instinctive sense, I guess.
  • Since Eliot is the next High King, he's forced to marry the blacksmith's daughter in exchange for the blade. Some sad moments aside (he'll be magically bound to never have sex with anyone else, and he's still gay), there is some humor.
Eliot: According to the fine print that is not actually written down anywhere, I have a virgin farm girl to impregnate.
    Margo: Right this very second?
    Eliot: This very one.
  • "The Castle That Isn't There" is, of course, invisible. Turns out this was a budget-saving measure. The original owners had blown all their money and still had to build a castle. They decided that they could just use unfurnished builder's materials if no one could see it anyway.
  • They need to distract the guards at the castle, and Josh suggests they run while he makes a distraction. Margo just rolls her eyes and says "They're men" while unbuttoning her top. She then pretends to faint while Josh calls for the guards to help his sister using a hilariously over the top old-timey accent.
  • Ember, god and creator of Fillory, the most ancient being in the land, asks if Quentin and Julia brought him "little cakes." He's very disappointed that they didn't.
  • The Beast has trapped Ember in his own shrine, and now he's just bored.
Ember: I've had sex with every nymph in the kingdom!
    Quentin: We're here to help.
Ember: But you're not a nymph.
  • Ember gives Quentin a touch of his divine power so that he can wield the blade. It's a jar of something white.
Ember: When you are ready, simply imbibe it.
    Julia: ...Is that semen?
    [beat]
Julia and Quintin exchange disconcerted looks.
    [beat]
    [beat]
    Quentin: Thank you.
  • After Quentin has decided that Alice is the real hero of the story and passed the knife on to her, she still has to, uh, "imbibe" Ember's "power."
Margo: Pretend it's prom night and you just wanna shut him up.

Season 2:

Episode 1 - Knight of Crowns

  • After everyone is awake and in (mostly) one piece after Julia takes off with the Beast, they realize that without the Leo blade, they have no idea what to do next.
Margo: So we are fucked without grease.
    Quentin: That sounds like us.
    Eliot: Must be a Monday.
  • When the team sees the horse-drawn carriage for the King of Fillory, Alice practically cries at how beautiful they are.
Alice: I'm sorry, I just really love horses.
  • She changes her tune after they refuse to help unless the so-called king produces a crown.
  • The tests to make sure that the aspirants for the position of High King really are from Earth.
    • The Knight of Crowns casually apologizes for dying during the long wait between aspirants.
    • The questions are bizarre pop-culture questions from the 90's ("Is it not the 90's on Earth?").
Knight: What was the hit song made by the children of famous actors?
      Margo: ...dude. That's hella vague.
    • It ends with Eliot reciting Patrick Swayze's speech from Dirty Dancing (with help from Alice). The Knight looks like he's about to cry, and falls to his knees.
      Knight: My Lord!
  • When Eliot claims his castle, he finds that the servants have been waiting for a king for years, and are overjoyed to finally have one. Unfortunately, the castle is in shambles, there are enemies to the north and to the south, the armory has been stripped bare, and they lost the key to the throne room.

Episode 2 - Hotel Spa Potions

  • When the team returns to Brakebills, they find out that the cottage is missing. They spend a few minutes trying to figure out what happened before Margo remembers that it was her idea to prank the freshmen by moving it over break.
  • The team enters the cottage by Margo slamming the door open, bashing a girl who happened to be standing behind it.
Margo: That's right, bitches. We're back. Drink. Now.
[random kid hands her a shot glass]
  • Among the many problems Fillory is facing, without magic, the crops don't just grow on their own any more. The locals don't even know what fertilizer is. Eliot has to delve into his repressed childhood memories to teach the people the most basic farming techniques.
  • Eliot's wife wants to be helpful in any way she can, so Eliot gets all the hot guards in the castle to strip and stand by while they have sex (since Eliot can't actually have sex with any of them). Except she manages to guilt him into sending them away before they actually do it.
Eliot: Well, life is about new experiences. I've never been pussy-whipped before.
  • The montage of them trying to find the book on battle magic that Brigsby the pixie hid in the library. There's Alice and Quentin magically compiling anagrams, Penny and the librarian magically compiling number codes, and Margo and the Dean searching the index for anything related to the book. Asking for books on "pixie pranks" gets them a hundred results.
  • When the Dean gives everyone some tricks to fight the Beast, the first step is to get very drunk, since the rest of it is unspeakably painful. Like a magical tattoo seared directly into their backs.
Quentin: Well I guess I can't get buried in a Jewish cemetery any more.
    Penny: Are you even Jewish?
  • After Margo gets her tattoo, groaning and screaming in pain the entire time, Dean Fogg then says it's time for the painful part. Margo, still in pain from being tattooed, is horrified.
Margo: That wasn't the painful part?
    • Followed by Fogg informing them of the cacodemon and its powers.
Quentin: What are you, uh, gonna do with it?
Fogg: Lift your shirt, Quentin, and turn around.
Margo: Oh, those words never led to anything good. [glances at Quentin] Well, almost never.
  • The Beast spends the entire episode using magic to sing, complete with an accompanying instrumental score.

    Episode 3 - Divine Elimination

  • Eliot is disappointed at everything he missed while he was stuck in Fillory.
Eliot: You all got matching tramp stamps?
Alice: Wouldn't those be on our lower backs?
  • The Beast's curse turns out to be lethal paranoia, triggered when the royals sit on the thrones. Quentin, Alice, Margo, and Eliot spend the first half of the episode loudly plotting to assassinate each other, to the exasperation of Penny and the palace staff.
    • Eliot is the first affected, and accuses the others of being usurpers... and then he says it again with a different pronunciation, because he can't remember which is right.
    • Eliot grabs the first servant he sees, a man with his hands full of maps, and tries to rope him into the plot.
Eliot: I need a knife. A stiletto, really, something I can sneak up and stab somebody with, but you know... regal.
      Cartographer: ...I draw maps, sir.
Eliot: C'mon, hasn't anyone ever burst into your chambers and stabbed a knife into a map to make a point?
    • Penny threatens Quentin and Margo with a crossbow to get them to stop killing each other. Margo smugly says she's enchanted—and indeed, we saw Quentin's bolt miss her moments earlier. Penny just shoots her in the ass.
      Penny: Your enchantment is shit.
Margo: You shot me, you cock!
Quentin: Why didn't you shoot her in the neck, the carotid is right there!
    • Penny tells everyone his plan to end the curse by stopping their hearts (killing them) with shots of drugs, then revive them with shots of adrenaline. While he is distracted by his numb hands, Margo grabs one of the syringes and kills Quentin, then the others grab the other shots and start fighting.
Fen: I suppose this is one way to get the killing bit over with.
Penny: Yeah. This is what I was planning.
    • Margo wins, grins in triumph... and then stabs herself with the last syringe.
Penny: That is one thorough fucking curse.
Fen: Is it wrong to say that I find her death extremely satisfying?
  • The previous episode, Fogg gave them the cacodemons and said they'd each get a special word for releasing it. Turns out that said command is just the person saying "[character] says 'go free.'"
  • Quentin tries to explain how they'll use a low-level shield spell to protect Alice while she casts by having all three of them cast it at once.
Quentin: Imagine dicks. With one dick, you're just jerking yourself off, but with three, you've got six people having sex.
Margo: ...and that makes it more powerful? I think your metaphor literally made no fucking sense.
Quentin: It doesn't have to make sense, it just has to distract you long enough for Alice to power up the spell.
Eliot: ...I see what you did there.
  • Margo jokingly says she'll have sex with the horses if they'll get them to the Beast in time.
Quentin: Check the volume, I think those are talking horses.
Margo: [looks at horses sideways] ...offer stands.
    [horse snorts]
  • The Beast, injured, returns to the Wellspring for a powerup only to find that Ember shat in it. What follows is Ember giving him about fifty different puns for defecation, including "divine elimination."
Ember: Am I being too subtle for you?
    • After Ember leaves the Beast takes a step forward and immediately stumbles back choking. Apparently it was quite the stinker.
The Beast: You're no god! You're a farm animal! You're a farm animal!

Episode 4 - The Flying Forest

  • When Margo and Eliot are watching a centaur fix up Quentin.
Margo: I know we're being serious right now, but that surgeon has the biggest dick.
    Eliot: [solemn nod]
  • Eliot is kind of a terrible king, which isn't funny, since Fillory really needs a good king. His childish reaction to is good for a few laughs, though.
Eliot: I just want everyone to stop wanting things.
Fen: I guess this is a bad time to ask for something?
Eliot: Your father makes knives for a living and knows where I sleep, so... ask away.
  • Fen, as it turns out, really likes sex. She spends most of the episode going from hinting loudly to straight-up asking Eliot for sex.
Fen: I don't know how to politely ask you to fuck me.
  • Eliot signs the letter to Quentin "Your benevolent overlord, High King Eliot."
  • The centaur surgeon randomly gets a weird look on his face while talking to Penny.
    Penny: Are you... shitting?
  • Penny refers to the centaurs as "bronies."
  • Since the centaurs won't help, Penny enlists Quentin's aid to chop off his hands. It starts with getting Penny drunk on centaur beer (which is really strong), and Quentin wusses out at the last second. Then Penny says "no wonder you couldn't get Alice off—" and Quentin immediately starts chopping. It takes him a few tries, with Penny screaming the whole time.
    • Penny had been reassuring Quentin he was too drunk to feel anything. The moment the first fingers came off he yelled he could feel it and Quentin yells he can fix it - by chopping even faster while they're both screaming.
  • The "Flying Forest" is supposed to have trees that fly. It actually has a drug-fog, making anyone who goes into it feel like they're flying.
Penny: Listen Quincy, if we get a tree—
Quentin: You just call me Quincy?
Penny: Is... that not your name?
    • After Penny calls him Quincy, Quentin starts touching Penny's face and when Penny goes to shove him off, Penny realizes his hands are missing.
Penny: [panicking] Where... Where are my stuff touchers?
  • Eliot and Margo test out whether or not the golem can go to Earth and as they walk into the cottage, Eliot's cautiously optimistic.
Eliot: Okay, didn't explode so far. ...Why does everything smell so great?
Margo: Because your doppelganger hasn't met cocaine yet.
    • They walk in on a party and it turns out that the person who threw it was Todd. They discover this when a bunch of partiers chanting Todd's name set him down on a table and he's standing there in a crown.
Todd: I heard you guys were dead! So I threw this massive rager in your honor.
Eliot: The fact that you just called it a "rager" sickens me.
    • Todd also admits that he accidentally became the "new Eliot".
Eliot: Todd, answer truthfully: are you wearing my vest?
Todd: I... am wearing your vest. [starts unbuttoning it]
      Eliot: [disgusted] Keep it.
  • Eliot explaining the problems with the Wellspring to the Dean, and how Ember underestimated how difficult it would be to clean up.
Dean: Now magic is failing on Earth... because of shit. Proving once again that comedy and tragedy can coexist in the same goddamn sentence.
    • Earlier the Dean had been consulting with Pearl about his issues with magic and she mentioned a few brown outs, but had been blaming them on the Xanax. When he asks how often, she responds two a day when she can get her hands on it before realizing he meant the magic.
  • Eliot has a heart-to-heart with the Dean about being High King.
Eliot: I'm in way over my head. I don't even have any control what world I'm awake in, and my sexually aggressive wife, she could wake me up in Fillory at any moment.
Dean: [cough] Eliot, there are certain student-teacher boundaries which I prefer not to cross.
  • The Dean helps Eliot decide that he has no choice but to stay in Fillory, but promises to bring in as many historians, political advisers, and shamans as possible to help him become a good king.
Dean: Your thesis project is: "How to save an entire god-damn world."
  • The drugs of the Flying Forest put Quentin and Penny in an amnesia loop for hours until Quentin finds Alice's necklace, which he dropped.
Quentin: This is a girl's. I wonder if I'm supposed to be rescuing her.
Penny: [genuinely curious] What if you're just a stalker?

    Episode 5 - Cheat Day

  • Penny goes to see Mayakovsky about his hands. He gets caught in a levitation trap and just hangs there for who knows how long until Mayakovsky wanders by and unceremoniously drops him.
  • Julia and Kady looking for clues about Reynard's banishment forty years ago in old newspapers.
Julia: Just look for any strange events or aberrations.
Kady: ...that is literally the definition of news.
  • Fillorian pregnancy tests consist of a magical rabbit that says "pregnant!"
  • Eliot initially assumes the assassin is from a neighboring kingdom, and is surprised to find that he's a native Fillorian.
Eliot: My own people are trying to kill me? How very... French.
  • The sloth recommends a variant of quartering with four centaurs plus a fifth who does something with a stake.
    Margo: That sloth is psychotic.
  • Margo and Eliot are offended by their advisers dismissing the assassin as an unimportant commoner.
Margo: When we're the least snobby people in the room, there's something wrong with the room.
  • Mayakovsky's initial assessment of Penny's hands.
    Penny: They're useless, right?
Mayakovsky: Well, maybe not... useless. You can still grab hold of things, rub away a lonely night...
    Penny: Okay, but for magic?
    Mayakovsky: Magic? Useless.
  • The assassin belongs to a group called Fillorians United, and proudly refers to himself as a FU-fighter. Margo can't stop giggling.
  • Mayakovsky's bizarre tasks for Penny: First, untie a massive pile of knotted ropes. Then, file a giant table to sawdust with one tiny little hand file.
  • A coworker at Quentin's new job suggests masturbating after hours, and when Emily comes in she assumes that's what he was doing.
Emily: Were you masturbating? It's okay, I do it too.
Quentin: What is with this place?

Episode 6 - The Cock Barrens

  • The episode starts with Quentin doing a bizarre series of dances barefoot in the dirt while Eliot and Margo watch. It's an attempt to summon Alice's niffin using something dear to her heart.
Eliot: Oh, it's a sex thing.
Quentin: No, it's Cirque du Soleil.
Eliot: You and Alice had sex to Cirque du Soleil?
  • As Fen is trying to tell Eliot about the FU-fighter, he drinks something and spits it out.
Eliot: What the actual horrifying fuck is this?
Dwarf: You asked for a unicorn milk latte.
Eliot: I was joking! ...wait, you guys actually milked a unicorn?
  • Penny needs his special moss, so he asks Eliot to point him towards the royal botanist.
Eliot: We had one, but he was... eaten on the job.
Penny: [jokingly] By what, a plant?
    Eliot: [level stare]
    Penny: I hate. This. Place.
  • Eliot and Margo are introduced to an ambassador, Princess of Loria. Or rather, Prince Ess of Loria.
  • Turns out Ess' mother is from Cincinnati. Seems Fillory isn't the only kingdom with children of Earth in charge.
  • Ess asks for a fair treaty with Fillory in exchange for the hand of "the virgin queen" Margo. Eliot giggles helplessly, but Margo is pissed.
Margo: Did he just call me a virgin?
  • When the castle disappears, the cartographer is more interested that the maps are all wrong now, and starts frantically erasing.
Penny: You do know there are people in there, right?
Cartographer: You do know that as of now, there are no accurate maps of the castle?
    • Just as the cartographer finishes correcting his last map, the castle reappears behind him.
Cartographer: [defeated] This is the worst day of my life.
  • When the Lorians steal Castle Whitespire along with everyone inside, Penny contacts Margo in her dream...and it's a bog-standard naked test anxiety nightmare. When Penny asks where she is, she struggles to describe the scenery.
    Penny: Where are you?
Margo: Loria. Some canyon with these purple-ish rock things.
    Penny: Rock things?
Margo: Dicks, okay? They look like dicks.
Penny: *laughs* Okay, full-sail or half...?
Margo: Honestly, it's a variety pack out there.
    • When Penny mentions this to the cartographer, he immediately identifies them as the Cock Barrens of Loria.
  • At the end, Margo is still pissed, and declares war on Loria.
Eliot: [confident] Yes! [deflated] ...wait, really?

    Episode 7 - Plan B

  • The Korean magicians who perform exorcisms in the back of a butcher's shop. They magically scan Julia by waving knives at her for a few minutes, and then angrily yell at each other in Korean.
  • The Brakebills healer quietly freaks out over Julia's god-pregnancy.
Professor Lipson: Have you seen the Twilight movies? Specifically the last one?
    Julia: No.
Professor Lipson: That's probably for the best.
  • Since Alice spends the entire episode invisible to everyone but Quentin (and doing everything she can to annoy him into freeing her), everyone is confused as to why he keeps getting interrupted by no one and glaring at empty space.
  • When talking to Alice in the library about the fact that he's trying to save her, she asks him if he really thinks that's what she wants. When he answers, her response is... less than impressed.
Quentin: I think if you were really you right now, that's all you would want.
Alice: Oh and you're the world's foremost expert on all things me? Based on what? Our garbage fire of a relationship that ended with Eliot's dick in your mouth?
  • When Quentin says he'll do anything he can to help Julia with her Reynard situation.
Julia: ...help us rob a bank.
Alice: Oh my god yes. Say yes!
  • The book Penny is looking for was written by a Polish Jew, and was destroyed by the eugenics books.
Librarian: They're locked up in the restricted section now, with the rest of the anti-Semitic texts.
  • Fillory never had to worry about money before, since the "nugget beetles" in the outer islands shit precious metals. But with Ember befouling the Wellspring, there wasn't enough magic for them to survive, and they went extinct.
  • After Quentin asks them about robbing the bank, Eliot and Margo start acting like they're proud parents.
Margo: [impressed] A bank heist. Wow.
Eliot: Hm, I think the time we've invested in him may actually pay off.
  • Margo takes charge on the heist because she robbed a bank once in her senior year of high school.
    Margo: I had some issues.
  • Julia finds Richard's notes on the Quarterback 2.0 and is working on building it when Kady comes in. When Julia explains what it is, Kady refers to the previous use of the spell.
    Kady: Deja pizza?
  • How do they empty the bank? By summoning a swarm of bees, and then entering disguised as beekeepers.
  • Quentin falls over trying to take his beekeeper mask off.
  • Two guards missed the evacuation order because they were having sex in the closet. Eliot gets rid of them with the "wrecking ball," a disco ball the size of a grenade that turns out the lights, starts playing "I am the best", and compels everyone to dance. The two dance themselves into a closet, following the ball.
Eliot: I invented it to make some people dance at the cottage parties, but it came out a little... strong.
  • The on-staff battle magician looks like an old librarian, and she's eating lunch when the alarm sounds.

Episode 8 - Word as Bond

  • Due to a complication with the exorcism, Julia lost her shade, the part of her soul that lets her feel remorse and pain. Just as Kady and Quentin are worried about what's going to happen to her, she comes down the stairs singing.
  • Black comedy, but Julia insists she doesn't need to hide behind wards because Reynard would have killed her already if he cared. He finds her the second she steps outside of Brakebills.
  • Quentin looking over the books on magic that Alice was reading. They're old religious texts, with secret magic notes in the margins because apparently they got bored just copying the same thing over and over again.
Alice: A lot of priests dabbled in magic. Some exploded.
  • Alice knows a way to look into the past, so Quentin has to negotiate with her right in front of Penny and Kady. He tells them a bizarre story about how they used to study together and bargain for extra time. Then it turns out that the answer he was looking for was blatantly obvious, and he could have figured it out without dealing with Alice if she hadn't been distracting him.
  • At the end, the ritual to move Eliot's consciousness from the golem to his real body has failed. Fen is angry and tearful, but Margo solemnly vows to fulfill every promise Eliot made to her, even if she has to hunt down Ember and make him change the rules on royalty. Then Eliot wakes up, to her exasperation.
Margo: Nice of you to come back, asshole.
  • After Kady spends the entire episode trying to get rid of Penny, he bluntly tells her she can't decide whether he thinks she's worth spending time on.
Penny: I love you, okay? Deal.
  • When Penny and Kady finally confront Quentin on how weird he's been acting and how his wards are actually solid for once, Kady says that he has to accept that they care about him, because they're the closest thing to family he has. Then she knocks him out in one punch.
Kady: Glass jaw. Knew it. [to Penny] What are you waiting for? Incept his ass!
Penny: I'll give it to you, you're practical.

    Episode 9 - Lesser Evils

  • Eliot and Margo are the least popular royals in Fillorian history. Considering what we've heard of previous rulers, that's pretty bad.
Margo: Thank God they don't have polls here.
  • Josh is in the cell next to Quentin, halfway through a transformation into a werewolf. He insists that he just has "sexually transmitted lycanthropy."
  • The advisers tell Eliot that if he wins the duel, he'll be considered the greatest ruler in Fillorian history, and he gets a far off look in his eyes.
Margo: God. He's already seeing the statues.
  • Fen gives Eliot a magical sword forged for a previous royal.
Fen: My grandpa was the royal family's favorite swordsmith because he knew... ah...
Eliot: That they were too lazy to learn?
Fen: Too preoccupied with matters of state. For busywork.
  • Margo needs advice and turns to the one member of her council she trusts more than any other: the psychotic sloth.
  • When they go to meet Reynard's son (who is a famous US senator), Julia reveals that she was planning to murder him and trap the resultant energy in a containment device.
Penny: We are not killing a US senator! [sigh] ...but we will commit a felony almost as bad.
  • Todd sees Kady and Penny stuffing Reynard's son into a closet.
  • Margo uses a spell to rope the castle into a rendition of "One Day More" from Les Misérables to get Eliot pumped up for the duel. In the middle of the song, Margo has to pause for a moment to explain she omitted some of the verses because she figured they didn't apply.
  • Right after the triumphant finish, the Lorian King immediately kills the mood.
Lorian King: I'm confused. Is the duel not today?
    Eliot: It's a metaphor.
  • In the middle of the duel, Eliot is doing surprisingly well, and the enemy king just runs off into the trees.
    Eliot: ...can he do that?
Ess: Kings can do as they like.
Margo: He ran away like a bitch, so that means it's over, right?
Ess: It is not over until one king is dead. You know what my other favorite musical is? Into the Woods.
Eliot: [rolls eyes and runs after him]
  • When Reynard's son starts hearing his voice in his head, they bring him to the infirmary.
Professor Lipson: ...is that Senator Gaines?
Dean: [deadpan] Probably? I mean, why not?
  • The Lorian King finds Eliot hiding on top of a tree because the magic went out, so he starts chopping down the tree with his sword. A few scenes later, he's tired, hasn't made much progress, so he and Eliot banter about all the annoying parts of their kingdoms while he takes a rest.
Lorian King: At least you don't have to worry about growing old.
Eliot: Excuse me, I would age like a fine wine... and you are a total DILF.
  • Eliot reveals that he found a solution that doesn't involve killing the king.
    Eliot: We're getting married.
    Fen: Wait, what?

Episode 10 - The Girl Who Told Time

  • While only a few days have passed on Earth, months have passed in Fillory, and Eliot has spent that entire time getting increasingly frazzled at planning his wedding. He ends up exiling a servant forever for giving him sub-par food.
  • Quentin has finally reclaimed his Fillorian throne... and has spent the last few months drunk off his ass, until Margo finally gets tired of it.
Quentin: You never yell at Eliot for being drunk.
    Margo: That's because Eliot's fun.
  • Margo assigns Quentin as Eliot's errand boy because she needs some time to herself.
Margo: I need a free moment to rub one out in a hot bath before I fucking kill someone—that someone being you.
  • Kady is worried about Penny's duties with the Librarians, but he assures her that he won't be starting the job any time soon; the Library takes a minimum of four weeks for just a basic book loan. Then they walk through a door and find themselves in the Library, where the Librarian cheerfully tells Penny that they finished processing his application.
    Penny: ...shit.
  • Eliot has taken to playing backgammon with Bailor (the FU-fighter who tried to kill him) and complaining about how the people don't like him.
  • How does Eliot know the people don't like him? Nate Silver is a magician, and Eliot used one of his polling spells to get an accurate approval rating.
  • Josh has been spending his time at Brakebills selling magical drugs.
Josh: This is like being hugged by a rainbow, this is like being blown by a rainbow. Do not mix these up.
  • When Quentin returns to Fillory, he finds Eliot arranging pieces on a complicated board.
Quentin: Holy shit, are we at war?
Eliot: I wish we were at war. These are the place setting for the wedding—much more dangerous.
  • When Quentin says he needs to go back to Earth to help Julia, Eliot gives him a big hug, which Quentin accepts awkwardly.
Eliot: If you miss my wedding, I will kill you.
  • Todd interrupts Quentin and Julia's research on shades, hung over from the effects of Josh's magical drugs.
    Todd: Is this place real?
    [Beat]
    Julia: ...No.
    [Todd nearly collapses in panic.]
  • When Penny and Kady go to collect an overdue book, the woman starts gesturing, and he throws himself to the ground like she just pulled out a bazooka. Turns out it's sign language; she's deaf.
  • Half of clickbait consists of magical spells hidden under illusions to get it out to magicians who need it. The rest is just clickbait.
  • Josh was working on a potion to make people like Eliot and accidentally made it way too strong, resulting in the dishwasher lapsing into a euphoric coma. Josh then stuck him in the armoire and left him there for hours.
Eliot: ...why is he in the armoire?
Josh: Because I'm not good in a crisis, okay?
Eliot: How are you ever a drug dealer?
  • Quentin logically assumes that the magical Teslaflexion device was made by Nikola Tesla. It was actually made by some guy named Fred Flexion.

    Episode 11 - The Rattening

  • Quentin and Julia track down a dragon to help them enter the Underworld. Much like the White Lady she's not really hung up on niceties.
Dragon: You have 24 hours to return to the portal.
    Quentin: Or...
Dragon: I sit patiently, waiting for you to come back. No, I eat you, I'm a fucking dragon, what do you expect?
  • After sending them on their way, the dragon expresses her opinion of the current crop of magicians.
    Dragon: Fucking Millenials.
  • The Underworld has a brochure reading "Don't Worry, You're Probably Not Going To Hell".
  • Penny is having trouble with the new type of magic he's learning on several levels.
Head Librarian: It’s an exceedingly difficult way to do magic, trying to isolate muscles not generally associated with—
Penny: Call it what it is. Sphincter magic. If it gets me there, no shame.
Head Librarian: And if it doesn't, we all need a healthy pelvic floor.
  • When half the castle randomly turns into rats, the sloth's translator tearfully bemoans "Why didn't I learn Rat in school?" The best part is his tone makes it clear he isn't being facetious; that really was an option, which he chose to skip. Given he's translating for a sloth, it's possible.
  • Eliot drugs the last two members of his council (and Margo) with truth serum, leading Tick to admit he's stealing from the treasury, and the translator that he's been hiring out the royal guards as an escort service.
    Eliot: Ew, gross. And clever.

    Episode 12 - Ramifications

  • Eliot is more stunned than anything when he learns about Quentin trading the button away.
Eliot: You gave our only means of traveling to Fillory to fucking Trogdor?
    • During their next scene he refers to her as Puff the Magic Dragon.
  • Josh, as the last Earthling in Fillory, becomes High King in more than one way. He rules based on a great leader's philosophy: "Hakuna Matata"... right up until Prince Ess kills his guards.
Josh: Hakuna Matata has failed me.
  • Sylvia has been entertaining herself by reading the books of famous celebrities. Kanye West really is misunderstood, apparently.
  • Umber reveals that the reason only Earthlings can rule Fillory is because the whole planet is just one big reality show for Ember. Eliot got exiled because his attempts to rule well were too boring.
  • Umber mentions that Ember staged a competition for all the animals and only granted speech to the sexiest, while he clearly made the centaurs while drunk.
  • Why did Ember turn half the people into rats? It's been on his bucket list for centuries.
  • Umber shows Quentin and Eliot his idea for his next world: A cube-shaped world he calls Cuba.
    Eliot: That's already a place.
    Umber: ...are you sure?
    Eliot: Definitely.
    • And then he's hilariously disappointed.
    • Prior to that he was taking a survey to see what he should include in his next world.
Umber: What is it that you enjoy about Fillory?
Quentin: It reminds me of a time before I realized how shitty being an adult is.
Eliot: And there's opium in the air.
  • Umber is a force of order, so of course he has every season of Law & Order on DVD. He refers to it as the most perfect show in all of existence.

Episode 13 - We Have Brought You Little Cakes

  • It's a bit horrifying, but all the terrible things Ember has done to Fillory—banishing Martin after he was raped, breaking the Wellspring's filtration systems, allowing Fen to get pregnant—were all to make the world more interesting. He describes it all in exactly the same way that a writer would, going on about themes and character arcs.
  • Ember calls Fillory "intricate as filigree," and that's what he meant to name it. Unfortunately, he was drunk at the time.
  • After Penny discovers he is dying because he entered the Poison Room, he gets called back to the Library. They know he's dying; they just don't think that's a good excuse to skip work.
  • When Quentin shows up at Umber's, he calls him a "sad little nerd king."
  • When Margo loses her eye to escape the fairy realm, she gets a bejeweled eye patch.
Margo: I look like Jack Sparrow if he were played by a man.
Eliot: I was thinking more fembot Nick Fury.
  • Eliot and Margo stage a party to attract Ember's attention. It's terrible.
Eliot: I had better orgies when I was ten.
  • Eliot and Margo attempt to convince Ember to not destroy Fillory by promising to be more exciting.
Eliot: That's our pitch. It's a new chapter and the title is "Shit Tons Of Drama And Surprise."
    • It works right up until they mention Umber, at which point, Ember loses his temper and starts insulting his brother.
Ember: My brother, rest his soul, was nothing but a simpering, sniping, anal-retentive critic, as well as a—
      [cut to Umber]
Umber: Greedy, promiscuous, selfish, credit-hogging, rat-eating slob.
  • Umber's world is incredibly boring, with perfect streets and symmetrical buildings all laid out in perfect rows. The restaurant is so perfectly furnished that Quentin only has exactly enough space to pull his chair back. He's clearly struggling to find a way to describe everything without insulting Umber.
  • While Umber and Quentin are in Umber's miniature world, Julia just steals it and brings it to Fillory.
  • Quentin manages to get Alice to accept being human by putting a plate of excellent bacon in front of her.
Quentin: Gluttony. It's an excellent part of being human.
  • How do The Elder Gods "turn off" all magic? By sending a plumber. As in, an actual literal plumber in uniform who opens a box in the air, turns a wrench and all magic is switched off like a siphon.
Quentin: So, you mean a real plumber? Like a Mario of the Elder Gods?

Season 3

Episode 1 - The Tales of the Seven Keys

  • Quentin and Julia do a really weird and stupid dance to get into Bacchus' party. Somehow it actually works.
  • Once Bacchus accepts Quentin and Julia, he tells them he has lots of fun games, like Trivial Pursuit: Star Trek.
  • Eliot has figured out that Margo's missing eye is allowing the Fairy Queen to spy on them. The solution? A conversation completely in pop cultural references. Words cannot do justice to this scene.
    • The best part are subtitles to explain to the pop cultural impaired what they mean.
Margot: Cause I am about ready to go full 07 Britney.
Subtitles: I am prepared to beat her to death, with an umbrella, if necessary.
    • The opening to it all.
      Eliot: You watch Battlestar, right?
Margo: Of course. I love terrorism allegories featuring mostly white people.
    • Eliot makes a line about Cersei Lannister.
Margo: Hey, glad I made you read those.
Eliot: ...Well, I read the wiki. What? Those books are like a billion pages long. I have a life.
    • And the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reference:
Eliot: So we have to keep it best episode of Buffy.
      Margo: [gasp] Musical?
      Eliot: Other one. ("Hush")
    • The fact that they refer to Quentin as "our Harry."
    • Eliot's way of saying Quentin would refer to the Fillory books.
Eliot: He'd... consult the creepy pedophile.
  • While hunting the White Lady for a wish, Eliot instead finds her brother, the Great Cock. He's a peacock-man who is very proud of his plumage.
    Eliot: The Great...?
The Great Cock: Cock. Have you never beheld one, child of Earth?
Eliot: No no, no... I've... beheld one or two.
  • Eliot asks how long the quest will take. The Great Cock shrugs and says "a season."

Episode 2 - Heroes and Morons

  • Eliot speaking to his council and explaining his plan to collect taxes from the outlying islands for the first time in forty years (because the gold-shitting beetles declared independence). Even better when you remember that the council knows Eliot's real plan is to do a quest, and are just pretending they don't like what he's doing for the sake of the fairies.
Eliot: If anyone has any dissenting opinions— [everyone raises their hands] —I remind you that this is not a democracy.
Faerie Queen: Truer words have never been spoken.
    • He also notes that "we're about to be a third world country on a planet with two-and-a-half countries."
  • Mayakovsky is turned into a bear and goes on a rampage in a bar. Quentin and the others identify him because the bear was a dick. Throughout the episode, everyone they ask about Mayakovsky mentions how much of a dick he was, even the bartender who had only seen him for one night.
  • Eliot's sapient ship throws Tick off her deck for calling her an asshole (after a few false starts like "asstrench" and "assgrave"). This is after he was trying to warn Eliot of this exact behavior.
  • The Faerie Queen puts a trusted servant "Fray" (short for "Frail Human") on the ship. Turns out she's Eliot and Fen's daughter, aged up to teenage years because time moves faster in the Faerie realm. Fen immediately tosses aside the log she was pretending was her daughter, while Margo and Eliot dismiss it as a trite plot twist. Fray, on the other hand, acts exactly like you'd expect from a teenager: constantly annoyed at everyone and everything.
  • Eliot and Margo, Genre Savvy as they are, discuss the fact that it is both incredibly cliche and unlikely that Fray is actually Eliot's daughter. Mostly through pop culture references.
Eliot: Ugh, god, what a cliche.
Margo: The baby that becomes a teenager practically overnight?
    Eliot: Right? Angel.
    Margo: Twilight.
    Eliot: Buffy.
Margo: Technically, Buffy's sister was never a baby, she just appeared out of nowhere and oh my god. Two months without dick, I sound like Quentin.
  • Someone cast a spell to make everyone in the park have sex, and Quentin and Julia need to figure out who did it. Except every time they try to ask questions, the couples try to invite them into the fun. Quentin manages to resist, but Julia almost ends up in a threesome with two guys before Quentin pulls her back.
  • Edging into Black Comedy, Julia mentions that the magician who cast the spell on the park had asked about the nearest building to jump off of. Quentin immediately names off the building (and turns out to be correct). When Julia asks how he knows that, Quentin's response manages to sound like he's explaining a hotel choice or something, though his descriptors come off like an inverted Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick list.
Quentin: The old post office on 58th.
Julia: How do you know that?
Quentin: Abandoned building, easy roof access, great view. It was the number one Midtown spot when I was into that kind of thing as a possibility.
  • Eliot declares that the island has been discovered and he is now their king, while the inhabitants just stare at him in confusion.
Eliot: ...no need to bow or cheer, I have an extremely healthy self-image.
  • While Eliot is having a serious conversation with the villagers about the monster that's attacking them, Fen keeps trying to hug Fray while Fray shrugs her off.
  • Alice spends the entire episode carrying around a cat in a cage and won't explain why. When the lamprey gets near, it starts hissing angrily, and then explodes in a bloody mess. Alice drops the cage and runs, leaving Quentin and the others behind with a very confused cop.
Quentin: Sorry, officer, our friend's cat was sick... and exploded. You know, like they do.
  • At the end, Fray is arguing with Eliot, and Fen gets a big grin on her face.
Fen: I finally get to say this: Don't talk to your father and I like that.
Eliot: My turn: Go to your room.
[Fray rolls her eyes and storms off while Eliot and Fen giggle helplessly]

Episode 3 - Losses of Magic

  • Fray doesn't exactly understand how the human realm works, and calmly asks if pirates are allowed to attack them and steal their ship.
  • Fen goes full-on violent Mama Bear, while getting in a couple digs about how Eliot is kinda useless without magic.
  • Tick thinks "mansplaining" is just any time a man tries to explain something, and doesn't understand why Margo doesn't like it.
Tick: Maybe you could womansplain it to me.
  • Margo casually orders Tick and a random assistant to follow, referring to them as "dickholes."
Gillan: ...did she just call us dickholes?
  • When the Faerie Queen gives Tick and Gillan the ability to see her, they both immediately kneel, to Margo's annoyance.
  • Alice and her father have trouble figuring out what's going on with the lamprey because Alice's mom keeps complaining about Alice disrupting her life.
  • Margo is not impressed with the pegasus.
Margo: I smell like a horse fucked a bird.
Faerie Queen: Actually, it was the other way around.
  • At various points in the episode, Alice and Quentin both wrap themselves up in Seran wrap to protect themselves from the lamprey, and look like the most low-budget mummies ever.
  • The pirate king is a woman.
King: As king, I get to be called whatever the fuck I want.
  • After Eliot, Fen, and Fray escape, the cartographer pretends to be him. Margo's face when the pirates show her the "High King" is hilarious.
  • Alice's parents get a tax bill for the house since they haven't paid in thirty years.
  • When Kady and Julia summon a demon, they immediately kneel and start reciting his titles. Turns out they got the wrong one.
Astereth: Astereth with an e, Astareth with an a is my cousin. You can totally stand, the whole kneeling thing is weird.
  • When Astereth starts painfully pulling the cancer out of Penny, he's surprised to see Penny's spirit standing behind him.
Penny: Save it. You'd astrally project too.
    Astereth: No shame, bro.
  • Margo trying to talk to the Muntjak about the pirates.
Margo: Before this, I used to think that pirates were kind of cute, in a Johnny Depp sort of way. But as it turns out, the real thing is dirty, and kind of fucked up, in a Johnny Depp sort of way.
  • While Quentin is awkwardly trying to comfort Alice's mom, she kisses him. They fall off the couch as he desperately tries to get away from her. That is of course when Alice and her dad come in.
  • Alice gives Quentin a potion to kill off any eggs that the Lamprey would have left in him. Quentin ends up puking into the kitchen sink while Alice just awkwardly pats his back.

Episode 4 - Be The Penny

  • Penny starts the episode, still incorporeal, trying to move a lamp. That doesn't work. Then he tries to tackle a student. Still nothing.
    Penny: Dammit!
  • Penny doesn't think his friends are sad enough at his funeral.
Penny: Why is nobody crying? I saved all your asses so many times. Appreciate me!
  • Penny pops in to hear Alice talking of how much she missed him and loved him. He smiles...until Alice talks of how "I used to ride on his shoulders" and he frowns in confusion. When he realizes Alice is talking about her father, Penny just lets out a tired sigh.
  • The royal cartographer calls Penny his best friend, to Penny's bewilderment. As a reminder, they met precisely once and he gave Penny a map.
  • Then there's Margo's reaction to the news.
Margo: I guess I always thought someday we were gonna bang.
Penny: [somber] Me too. Me too.
  • Penny meets another traveler not-quite ghost: Hymen.
Penny: ...did that used to mean something different?
  • Hymen turns out to have been watching the gang this time and gushing like a fan on the "best ships" and such.
Hymen: Quentin is the duck's nuts.
Penny: No, that cannot be a real thing people said.
    • Hymen also states that "as someone born in 1902, I find a white heterosexual hero to be very relatable."
  • Penny keeps randomly jumping in to see what Eliot and his family are up to. Penny isn't particularly interested in their troubles with cannibals.
Eliot: You can't negotiate with cannibals! You can't give them what they want!
    Fray: ...but can't we?
    Fen: No.
    Eliot: You're grounded.
    Fray: [looks offended]
  • Eliot and Fray run at full speed from the cannibals, forgetting about Fen.
Fen: SLOW DOWN, I HAVE WOODEN TOES!
  • Alice suggests feeding Penny's body to a corpse-eater, which will prevent him from coming back as a vengeful ghost but will result in him being enslaved to the Library for a billion years.
Penny: Dammit, Alice! I thought we were bros!
  • Penny drags Hymen by his ear.
Hymen: I was only trying to follow the story.
Penny: No! What Julia does in the bath is not story!
  • Penny threatens to cockblock Hymen for the rest of time unless he helps.
  • Hymen tries to teach Penny how to possess objects.
    Hymen: Be the penny.
    [3 hours later]
    Hymen: BE THE GODDAMN PENNY!
    Penny: You keep saying that!
  • Margo spends her time on the Muntjac planning.
Margo: The bunny I sent Eliot was "return to sender." For all I know he's dead, and he and Penny are blowing each other in heaven.
Penny: [slow turns to give an offended look]
Margo: Now when I get back, I'm gonna fix this. Benedict, you're gonna round up the guards. Tick, you're gonna go to that fairy-repellent hallway and you're gonna grind one of those bricks to dust. You're gonna put it in the Fairy Queen's bath, and when that knocks her on her ass, [sweetly] I'm gonna cut out her heart and eat it in front of every goddamn fairy asshole in the kingdom.
Penny: [immediately awestruck] Damn, girl. You get shit done.
  • Penny finds the Margolem and possesses it to talk to his friends. He lurches around like a zombie and moans incomprehensibly until Quentin freaks out and beats the golem to death.
    • Todd shows up in the living room and informs everyone that he's been keeping the Margolem in his closet. Kady and Quentin assume Todd's keeping it as a sex doll like Margo's ex did. The reality is much more pathetic.
Todd: Um, announcement? You guys remember the Margolem? Margo's doppelganger made of living clay? Since Margo's been gone, I've been... storing it. You know, for safe-keeping?
      Kady: Ew.
      Quentin: That's... problematic.
Todd: It's not like that. I just dress her up and pretend she respects me.
  • Quentin and Julia discover that the student they are looking for from the 40's is a "code 7," and ask the Dean what that means.
Dean: Student suicide. Or he magically exploded. I don't know why they use the same damn code for both.
  • Dean Fogg explains how a previous Dean buried the haunted dorm because it was seen as unfashionable to have a ghost hanging around. Now they advertise such things in the brochure like a feature.
  • Eliot tries to use the key to summon a shadowbat. He gets an illusion of his father instead.
Penny: What is with everyone and their daddy issues today?
    Fray: Hi grandpa!
  • The dean comes in to say that the school is being sold because the board doesn't expect them to save magic. He's very drunk, and somehow manages to find the bottle of alcohol on the table with no help despite being blind.
Dean: Quentin, is this scotch or rye?
    Quentin: ...it's rum.
    Dean: Excellent.
  • The doors to the Physical House suddenly burst open and Eliot, Fen, and Fray run through, chased by an angry horde.
Eliot: Gather around and listen to Uncle Eliot tell a story. This story is called... "Eliot did nothing wrong, but was chased by cannibals through the befucked Neitherlands anyway."
  • Eliot told the illusion of his father that the cannibals didn't know the difference between a tractor and a backhoe, and he ran off to set them straight.
Quentin: You fed your father to cannibals?
Eliot: An illusion of him. But yes. It was very cathartic. There was lots of screaming on both sides.
  • The last line of the episode, as Eliot picks up the key that reveals the truth.
Eliot: Hmm... I don't see anything. Maybe it doesn't work on me. Oh, hey Penny.

Episode 5 - A Life in the Day

  • While Brakebills has been sold, the Physical Cottage was moved so many times that there's no valid deed, so the board couldn't sell it, so the heroes can still use it.
  • Eliot sent Fen and Fray into the city to get them out of their hair. He insists he's not completely irresponsible because he sent Todd with them to keep them out of trouble.
  • There's a mosaic in Fillory called the Mosaic, which is supposed to provide a reward to anyone who uses it to show the true beauty of life. The reward? "The key to greater magic."
Eliot: Don't you love it when the metaphors turn out to be literal?
  • Margo tells Tick to "ovary up" and find a weapon against the faeries.
  • Quentin and Eliot get a magical messenger bunny from Margo.
    Bunny: At castle, getting married.
Eliot: Does that sound like Margo to you?
    [second bunny appears]
Bunny 2: Need help now, dickwads!
    Eliot: Definitely Bambi.
  • When Eliot and Quentin are trying to solve the Mosaic, Quentin starts by doing some calculations.
Quentin: There's a finite number of possible solutions. [checks his math] ...that's a lot of zeroes.
    Eliot: Exactly how many zeroes?
    Quentin: Exactly? A shitload.explanation
  • During the montage from their time in Fillory, it cuts to Eliot and Quentin during an argument and that particular cut ends with Quentin kicking over a stack of tiles just to be petty.
Quentin: What's that supposed to mean?
Eliot: You know exactly what that means.
    [beat]
    Quentin: [kicks over tiles]
    Quentin: [deadpan] Oops.
  • Margo has to marry a prince from the Floating Mountain, which fell into the sea after magic died. Every time anyone mentions it, they refer to it as "the Floating Mountain that is no longer floating."
  • Margo delays her wedding night by claiming it's an Earth tradition to open every single present before consummating.
Margo: But if I don't, your manhood will shrivel up and fall off. Like an overripe banana.
Pebble: ...best not to risk it.
  • Margo finds Jane in the Clock Barrens, a place where all things are happening at once and Jane is still alive (also, dead). Jane tells her to find the key in her grave in Brakebills.
Margo: You're telling me to dig up your corpse, how the hell can you be so chipper about it?
Jane: It hasn't happened yet. And I'm very English.
  • While it's made sad by Quentin's following line, Eliot's immediate reaction when he remembers the mosaic timeline is amusing.
    Eliot: I got... so old.

Episode 6 - Do You Like Teeth?

  • Alice and Julia try to reverse-engineer one of Marina's rituals using scavenged components from toys. They end up using headphones like electrodes.
  • Penny has to possess a novelty talking mounted fish in order to get the girls' attention so they'll grab the Truth Key.
Julia: Did you just use that fish as a doorbell?
Penny: I've been trying to warn you guys for like an hour, and the fish was the only thing that worked.
  • Fogg is not amused that he wasn't told about Julia's magic.
Dean: Fuck me. You have magic, and you just now told me.
Alice: To be fair you've been a little... drunk. And unreliable.
Dean: I am perfectly reliable. [knocks everything off his desk on accident]
  • Apparently Dean Fogg has been using enchantments to make himself 38% more tolerable to make up for the fact that people don't like black or disabled people. With magic gone, well...
  • The incubus is a hedge fund manager. The girls spend a few minutes trying to ask him for help while being as respectful as possible before Alice just tells him that they need his penis. The incubus bursts out laughing and says he planted that joke on Fogg twenty-five years ago, and he never expected it to pay off.
Incubus: I don't even like sex. Stress is a much better way to drain people's energy.
  • The Faerie Queen is still trying to get Margo to consummate her marriage, despite Fomarr being fifteen.
Eliot: Have you ever heard of statutory rape?
Faerie Queen: Fomarr is not a statue.
  • Margo decides to kill Fomarr's boner by giving him a sex ed class. With a book and pictures.
Margo: Vaginas. The leading cause of death in men.
  • Quentin is undercover as a palace guard in his own palace. He's not amused.
  • When Quentin agrees to go on the quest alone, Eliot tells him he'll finally be able to do "that thing on the prow of a ship" that he's always wanted to do. Quentin has no idea what he's talking about.
  • Eliot is surprised when a Lorian messenger gives him a letter from Ess, since Eliot thought he was still in the dungeon. Margo released him since he was innocent, and the Lorian messenger seems more confused that Eliot didn't know than offended by any of it.
  • Penny is annoyed when Hymen appears and starts commenting on the "story."
Penny: Don't you have some shower to go haunt?
Hymen: Oh, no one's showering right now. Except Fogg, and he's asleep.
  • After Eliot gives Margo and Fomarr wine in celebration of their upcoming consummation, Fomarr faints.
Margo: Either I just killed him with my rage or you drugged his wine.
    Eliot: And you doubted me.
  • Eliot admits he kind of wishes they'd been able to just fight and get it over with so they could go back to being friends like they were before all the fairy drama happened. Margo points out they don't know who they are.
Margo: Who are we now, El? We used to be glamorous, amazing mega-bitches. And now?
Eliot: We have... depth. And... character.
    [Margo looks horrified]
  • Most of the scenes where Quentin's hallucinating because of the key are sad, but it slips into Crosses the Line Twice humor in a few places.
    • The hallucination calls Quentin "frowny foot-face" while taunting him about ending up with his grandparents' early-onset Alzheimer's.
    • The montage of Quentin trying to ignore the hallucination also is hilarious. He tries running it off, eating his feelings, getting drunk and...
Hallucination: You can't run me off. You can't eat me off. You can't drink me off. You can't jerk me off—oh god, you had to make it weird.
  • Benedict jokingly mentions that sailors used to tie mad members of the crew to the mast. Quentin thinks it's a fine idea.
  • Some Conversational Troping from Eliot and Margo.
Eliot: I think these fairies might actually count as Big Bads.
  • Poppy mentions she was able to distract her depression-illusion with seagulls. Then she wonders if that worked because she gets distracted by seagulls.
  • When they discover the fairy eggs, Eliot's trying to figure out what to do and turns around to find Margo's not there. A moment later, she runs into the scene carrying half a dozen of them and says she's taking them as hostages. Eliot's expression sells the entire thing.
    Eliot: What the fuck?
  • Margo uses one of the fanged toads on an unconscious Fomarr, following her earlier claim that women had teeth down there.
Fomarr: [waking up] Something just bit my manhood!
Eliot: Congratulations, you are now a man. The first time always hurts. It's all the teeth they've got down there. You were great.
    Fomarr: [gives him a look]
Eliot: What? I like to watch.
    Fomarr: [looks violated]

    Episode 7 - Poached Eggs

  • When Quentin mentions his deal with the Great Wyrm last season, Poppy says that she's heard she's withholding. And judgy.
  • The Dean spends the entire episode drunk and blunt, not in the mood for any shit.
Dean: I'll file that under entitled millenial bullshit.
  • Fen and Fray return from New York, with Fen squeeing about the "Square of Time" and the delicacy known as "pizza."
  • Todd calls Eliot dad before quickly correcting himself.
  • No one has bothered keeping Todd in the loop until they need him to keep watch over the fairy eggs.
Todd: Wait, fairies are real? I thought Fray was just nuts.
  • When Margo and Eliot return to Fillory, they find the throne room covered in feathers.
Tick: I had to make your chicken pox look good for the faerie queen.
  • While coming up with the plan to break Kady out, Quentin and Poppy go through and explain the process of holding someone involuntarily in a psych ward and how they're going to break her out. When Penny asks if the hospital would check credentials, Quentin and Poppy point out it's a state hospital with an archaic computer system and would take the hospital long enough to verify that they'd be able to get Kady out in plenty of time.
Penny: Should I be concerned that you both know so much about this?
  • After the escape plan is derailed, Kady gets out of her room by handing a guard the Key. When he is shocked to see Penny, she uses the distraction to knock him out.
  • The hospital goes into lockdown when Kady escapes. Poppy ends the lockdown by starting a fire in a trash can in the closet.
    Poppy: Works every time.
Quentin: How many times have you done this?

Episode 8 - Six Short Stories About Magic

  • Penny needs to find Benedict in Limbo, but the local coordinator is already overworked and wants something in return: Game of Thrones spoilers. Penny, having evidently never read or seen either version, just makes stuff up on the spot. And it works.
Penny: Oh, the White Walkers. Yeah, I mean, those guys were bad news, you know. But then the British-sounding dude came in and, uh, you know, kicked their asses, so...
    Coordinator: Wait, who's that?
Penny: You know: dope outfit, speaks in rhymes, has eight dragons.
Coordinator: Where did he get so many dragons?
Penny: I mean, that's the question. So, you know, he came in and won the throne... game.
  • Penny starts going through Cassandra's writings to get the whereabouts of the fourth key. Unfortunately for him, the first one he grabs is about Quentin and Poppy having sex.

Episode 9 - All That Josh
  • The party at Josh's special spot with paintings of himself all over.
  • It turns out the reason why Margo and Eliot got that weird trial is Tick slightly misunderstood their request.
Tick: The judge you requested for trial. A wombat?
Margo: Wombat? Jesus, Tick, we said trial by combat!
  • When they're sailing towards the Infinite Waterfalls, Eliot and Margo have a sweet moment where they talk about how they've at least always had each other. And then Margo pulls a Han Solo on Eliot.
    Eliot: I love you, Margo.
    Margo: I know.
  • Thanks to the Unity Key, our heroes are able to communicate with each other across dimensions. In order to solve their current dilemmas—Josh being beaten by the demon's minions, Eliot and Margo about to fall off the edge of Fillory, Skye dying because she just did magic—Quentin casts a spell that will allow them triumph...by singing Under Pressure.
Penny: (realizing what is about to happen) God, I hate you.
    • When Eliot begins singing, Margo stares in a surprised look that screams "We are about to die and this is the last thing you intend to do?".
    • When Julia begins singing, Fen, who wasn't linked by the Key, stares in total confusion.

Episode 10 - The Art Of The Deal
  • Todd introduced Fen to emojis and apparently called it "the universal language".
  • When Julia's trying to convince Fen to help her free the fairies on Earth, Fen texts her reply to Julia.
Julia: Is that... a gif of a crab with a knife?
    Fen: It's how I feel.

     Episode 11 - Twenty-Three
  • Eliot and Margo naturally complain over the drawings of themselves on a wanted poster.
  • The banter between Josh and his Timeline 23 counterpart is terrific.
  • Even in this timeline, Margo and Eliot have their banter down great.
Margo: So don't cock out on me.
    Eliot: Cock out?
Margo: I'd say pussy but let's face it...we know which one is tougher.
    • When she says it, we see Julia and Marina both making little "good point" nods.
    • After the ghost flashback, Margo appears again with half her face blown off. Her reaction is as deadpan as it is hilarious.
      Margo: Cocks...
  • Penny 23 (alive in this world) tries to kiss Julia.
    Julia: I'm from another timeline.
Marina: One where romantic comedy behavior gets you arrested!
  • After Julia casts the Rhinemann and it turns out that Quentin 23 is the Beast:
Josh: Okay, I'm a little sick of plot twists!
  • Even shadeless, evil and masquerading as the Beast, Quentin's still enough of a super-nerd to make a reference to The Princess Bride and get annoyed when the reference goes over Alice's head.
  • Alice 23 tries a "I know you're in there" speech on Quentin. He's not impressed.
Alice: I know the man that I love is still inside you somewhere.
    Quentin: Yeah, I ate him.

Episode 12 - The Fillorian Candidate
  • The opening of Josh explaining to Penny 23 the history of the show with him saying "imagine a montage."
  • Josh showing off the "hook up-slash-murder chart" with strings linking the various characters, showing how nuts this has all been.
  • Josh boasts of having a threesome with harpies, accompanied by a "clip" reading "Footage Not Found".
  • Penny 23 is reading the news. Among the headlines of the news was "Bacon is Bad for Sperm study".
Penny 23: My timeline was post-apocalyptic and it wasn't this fucked up.
  • Margo tried to bargain with Fairy Queen via portal rabbits. Each time the rabbit came back with the same response, "Eat my ass!", which it keeps repeating over and over again till it's covered by a blanket. And Margo isn't really sure whether it's the Queen's response or they've just got a very kinky rabbit.
    • Josh says that they need to somehow attract Queen's attention, though they have no idea how to do that.
Rabbit, from under the blanket: Eat. My. Ass.
  • In order to learn what is sealed in the Castle at the End of the World, the Physical Kids need to find a god. Quentin's first thought is Bacchus, but can't reach him because Bacchus' Instagram account was suspended for something involving nipples.
  • Eliot learns that Fray is dating a talking bear, so he decides to tell her what his father never told him.
Eliot: I'm so happy you're dating a bear.
    • And the bear thanks him.
    • Fen is a bit disturbed about bestiality and just sips her drink several times after she learned about Fray's bear-boyfriend.
  • Eliot resorts to modern campaign tactics (including one-upping Tick's planned policies with false over-the-top promises) to win the Fillorians' votes. Tick responds in kind with mudslinging.
  • Kady, Julia and Penny 23 visit Reynard and see that he's living a luxurious life inside a villa. When they start complaining that he still got off way too easy, a pizza delivery car arrives and it turns out that the delivery guy is an impoverished Reynard.
  • It's kind of amusing (and satisfying) how pathetically weak Reynard is, and how Julia can just freeze him and force him to shut up, just like Reynard used to do with his victims.
  • Margo's realization that she won on a platform of bestiality.
  • After Margo is given a fairy eye as a gift for upholding her promise to offer the fairies peace and land, the Fairy Queen goes back to retrieve the key that she was willing to give in return. Considering Fen helped the queen save several of her people from slavery, it's understandable that she is a bit pissed that she doesn't get her wooden toes replaced.
Fen: Can I maybe get some fairy toes?

Episode 13 - Will You Play With Me?

  • While trying to figure out which goddess it was that built the prison for the monster, Alice remembers one.
    Alice: You forgot Calypso.
    Eliot: Like the musical style?
Margo: The witch that imprisoned Odysseus. And I love you, El, but how did you pass AP Lit without ever reading?
    Eliot: I didn't.
  • The brief running gag where everyone keeps mispronouncing Ogygia and Alice getting annoyed.
  • The reveal that Calypso, who built the monster's prison, runs a game company that makes a bland-name version of Candy Crush. And that Josh is obsessed with it.
Josh: Oh my god, I worship them. They're the Candy Collider people. I nearly spent $600 on level 593. It took me twelve straight days.
Quentin: There are prisons and then there are prisons.

Season 4

Episode 1 - A Flock of Lost Birds
  • Margo's humor hasn't lost its spark when she meets Ember.
Margo: Am I in Jeff Goldblum's house?

Margo: I haven't been this confused since I woke up in bed with Banksy.

Episode 2 - Lost, Found, Fucked
  • After nearly breaking the enchantment, Marina-23 triggers a voice mail from Fogg.
Josh: Holy shit, it's James Earl Jones!
    • He adds how spells sound like "credit cards with fraud warning calls."
  • Marina trolling Fogg.
Fogg: What timeline are you from?
Marina: The one where you owe me child support.
  • Fogg forced to tell the truth is a sight to behold.
    • That includes confessing to a librarian how he's been cheating her at cards for years as he pays her back.
    • He tells a colleague where to find a bottle of rare wine in his office. When he returns later, he naturally is curious why it's empty.
    • When a teacher leaves a building, Fogg punches him in the face and explains how "I had an affair with his wife."
    • And through the whole thing, he's dictating his life story to Todd.
  • Tick has to let Fen know that every time someone says Margo's name, some odd misfortune like being hit on the head by debris or flames going off happens.
  • Margo nods at Fen's talk on what she can do and clarifies "I'm nodding until you say something I understand."
  • It turns out the kingdom's air has been filled with opium (more so than usual, that is) which leads to people either falling asleep at odd times or acting out majorly.
  • Marina is is somehow able to keep a straight face while claiming that "it's very common knowledge I'm a very caring person who wants to help others."
  • It turns out Penny somehow managed to sleep with his own step-sister.
  • Margo brushes off a supposed "party animal" god with "I once snorted my weight in coke one July 4th."
  • The Hare on the Ass Tavern.
  • The first time Julia is knocked off by a battery hard enough to break her neck Todd is freaked out is panicking. The second time, he's confused. Later we see Julia repeating the process dozens of time, while Todd is playing on his phone with a bored look, and is surprised when she's not killed this time around.

Episode 3 - The Bad News Bear
  • The forger has several absurdly lucky things that happen to him at random, but the last straw is when a pigeon randomly appears to deliver him lunch.
Quentin: Did a bird just bring you a sandwich?
Frankie: Yeah, I guess she did. You want?
Quentin: Well, I mean, y-yeah, but...
Julia: But what the fuck, Frankie?
    • Before that, he opens the door to the gang's loft and there's a sweepstakes team ready to give him a huge prize.
    • Turns out, his specialty is in Luck magic and has been messing with the magic for so long that he's become stupidly lucky to the point he's The Magicians equilivant of Gladstone Gander.
  • Alice tries to run at a wall, thinking it's an illusion...and bounces off. She then picks herself up and walks through the illusion just two inches to her left.
  • The utterly ridiculous "disguises" for Kady and Margo.
  • In order to pull off the heist, a magic spell gives Kady and Penny major good luck but to make up for it, Quentin has to hold a teddy bear filled with bad luck. Which means while Kady and Penny somehow have amazing things happen for them, Quentin finds himself getting a paper cut from a paper towel and a boa constrictor somehow leaping out of the toilet to strangle him.
    • The good luck for the duo includes a picture of them just leaping out of a "banned magicians" book and into the shredder and a supervisor suddenly unable to see.
    • As soon as they get word the heist is done, Quentin hurls the bear across the room.

Episode 4 - Marry, Fuck, Kill
  • Helen's advice for Josh handling turning into a sex-crazed werewolf? Tinder.
