Go To

What Yuugi wants is simple. He wants Izuku to get into Yuuei with him. He wants the rocket engines designed for KaibaCorp to work. He wants to launch his emotions about his father’s family into hyperbolic orbit. Unfortunately, Yuugi and his friends find themselves in the middle of a plot to manipulate the course of history that leaves him struggling to answer two very not simple questions. What does it cost to build the future? And who decides who pays?

Shed Some of This Black Light to Surrounding Towns is a Yu-Gi-Oh!/My Hero Academia Fusion Fic written by arinrowan. The story focuses on Yuugi Muto, the boy with a powerful but mysterious Quirk, as he and his best friends, Izuku Midoriya, Jounouchi Katsuya and Seto Kaiba, continue on their paths to Yuuei while helping expand KaibaCorp's space program. But like all good stories, dangers, conflicts and villains lurk about that will test the young heroes on their respective journeys. Especially as Yuugi becomes more familiar with his dad's side of the family. This is the second installment of the lost in the infinite lights series and the sequel to Let the Darkness Bring Us Into the Light.

This fanfiction assumes the reader has completed the first story. Thus, all spoilers for Let The Darkness Bring Us Into The Light will be unmarked.

  • Adaptational Karma: In the original series, Mineta shameless harassed his girl classmates and faced no serious repercussions apart from slapstick beatings by the girls. In here, Aizawa expels him on the first day for his misconduct along with his poor performance. He also ends up in General Education alongside Yuugi and Jounouchi.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul:
    • Unlike in canon where Noah wasn't around when Seto and Mokuba were adopted, the three boys became acquainted with each other during the first years of adoption.
    • And in Chapter 16, the League of Villains were acquainted with the Eight Precepts of Death much earlier compared to canon.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Mako/Ryota Kajiki, is now a member of the Meta Liberation Army.
  • Ambiguous Situation: In Chapter 17, Bakugou was spotted taking the Entrance Exam alongside Izuku. It's never specified what Bakugou was up to after his traumatic encounter with Yami and Yugi nor how he responded to his former target Izuku, assuming the two actually reunited during the exam.
  • Arranged Marriage: As mentioned in the last book, the Yuuki Clan has practiced in arranged marriages to either create heirs with exceptional Quirks or to strengthen their family's political power. Nagare is meant to be betrothed but he doesn't enjoy the idea. So he's been spying on Yuugi on behalf of his father to ensure that he doesn't get married.
  • As You Know:
    • In Chapter 3, Izuku is revealed to have transferred out of Aldera and goes to the same middle school as Yuugi and Jounouchi.
    • In Chapter 19, it's revealed that Jounouchi and Izuku watched the Sports Festival every year while Yuugi cringes.

    • Izuku and Jounouchi have had a secret bet over Yuugi getting his First Kiss with Kaiba. To their shock, he does get one but with Bakura instead.
    • Jounouchi bets his lunch with Ochako over how long it'll be before Tenya realizes that Jounouchi has a Gender Bender Quirk.
    • Present Mic made a bet with Eraserhead over his Gen Ed kids making it to the third round of the Sports Festival.
  • Booze Flamethrower: Played for Laughs. Shouto brings up a time Endeavor caught his alcoholic drink on fire after it touched his fiery mustache. The Best Friend Squad plus Ochako have a good laughing fit after hearing that.
  • Breather Episode: Chapter 17 focuses on the Super Special Awesome Squad taking Melissa on a tour around Japan with little to no serious conflicts.
  • Bringing in the Expert: In Chapter 4, Ishizu explains to the Mutos that the Yuuki Clan, along with other families with Empathy Quirks, have an unspoken rule of taking personal responsibility of dealing with rogue or dangerous Empathy Quirk users rather then allowing other heroes to deal with them.
  • Brick Joke: In the last scene of Chapter 5, Yuugi goes shopping for what is regarded as the ugliest lizard plushie in existence. After the disastrous events of Chapter 11, Mokuba is shown holding onto the toy while inside Yuugi's hospital room.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Kaiba gives a business related example in Chapter 11. He can't risk destroying Industrial Illusions so suddenly as doing so would create a fallout on spider silk which could set back his aerospace projects for more years then intended.
  • The Cameo:
    • Professor Hawkins appears as a guest during the I-Island Expo Arc.
    • Shinsou Hitoshi appears as Yuugi and Jounouchi's classmate in the General Ed classes.

    • In Chapter 19 when Class 1-A is confronted by the Gen Ed kids, the Best Friend Squad talk with each other about Officer Shinsou's Quirk thanks to her son Hitoshi.
    • The aftermath of the Sports Festival has Jounouchi chatting with his friends while there's a knife stabbed in his lung.
  • Caught on Tape: In Chapter 16, Yuugi succeeds in recording Shigaraki and Dabi's confrontation with Overhaul, along with his abduction, using his KaibaCorp tablet.
  • Change the Uncomfortable Subject:
    • The topic of All Might retiring and how drastically things will change for everyone is not a subject that most Pro Heroes are comfortable with discussing out loud.
    • Yuugi tries to do this in Chapter 17 by focusing on anti-gravity instead of a recent Hero attack that resulted in 5 of Endeavor's sidekicks being killed.
  • Chekhov's Gun:
    • As part of Hatsume's haggling, Yuugi ends up owning a KaibaCorp tablet. He would use the tablet to secretly record Shigaraki and Dabi making quick work of Overhaul and his remaining stooges.
    • During the second half of the story, Yuugi starts to build an anti-gravity device. And in Chapter 20, Yuugi uses a prototype with Seto's help to maintain a stadium ceiling from collapsing to prevent further casualties.
  • Chekhov's Skill: In Book 1, Izuku stood out as the only person who was able to enter Yuugi's mindscape without Yami antagonizing him. This skill becomes incredibly useful when he's called into the Realm of One For All and is able to interact with Banjo when he awakens his Quirk.
  • Child Hater: Despite his popularity, Hawks admits that he isn't great with kids. He even mentions that Best Jeanist and Endeavor are just as terrible when it comes to handling children.
  • Cliffhanger:
    • Chapter 6 ends with Yuugi having to use his shield barrier to protect himself and Melissa Shield.

    • In Chapter 14, Yuugi discovers Eri hiding in the trash and helps hide her from two of the Eight Precepts.
    • For Chapter 19, Izuku and Shouto's battle is interrupted by the League of Villains staging an aerial attack.
  • Cooldown Hug: Sugoroku gives one to his grandson after he discovers the grim implications of Izuku having aplastic anemia and what could have happened if he stayed Quirkless.
  • Connected All Along: Grandpa Sugoroku is revealed to have played games with, and beaten, various MHA characters with high level positions. As of now, he's beaten Police Chief Tsuragamae and Gran Torino.
  • Conveniently Timed Distraction: While Seto and Yuugi are at I-Island, Oshita (the freaky fish guy), breaks his hip and requires a helicopter to transport him to a hospital. This happens the same time as Mokuba is kidnapped by goons hired by Pegasus.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Yuugi tries to avoid Sir Nighteye after their disastrous first meeting.
    • Unit 44 and Executive Order 1388 were mentioned in Chapter 13 of the previous book and are elaborated by Ishizu.
    • Chapter 5 mentions Nagare Yuuki's near-death experience along with Yuugi being attacked by Stain.
    • Yuugi tells Melissa how Seto used to refer to him as his "rival" when they were in elementary school.
    • Yuugi remembers Jounouchi's story about All For One when he tells Seto about Wolfram being given a second Quirk.
    • He also calls Hawks 'Wingman' upon their first meeting just like he promised Tanaka-ba.
    • Yuugi's conversations with the cryptic user "thefuturelaughsfromtheceiling" is brought up during his meeting with Nedzu.
    • After his first day at Yuuei, Aizawa follows through with his threat of giving Yuugi detention for taking a picture of him with kittens hanging around him.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Yuugi tries to promote Gran Torino by claiming that potential enemies would see him as a senile old geezer which would make them susceptible to a good whooping. The senior citizen did not take kindly to this selling point.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • After the events of the I-Island Expo Arc, Wolfram is speculated to die from his coma while Abraham is missing and in a serious critical condition.
    • Rather then being uploaded into cyberspace, Noah Kaiba is revealed to have died after taking the Trigger vaccine.
    • Three members of the Shie Hassaikai are killed. One by a member of the Yuuki family and two by Shigaraki's hand. Literally.
  • Death of Personality:
    • In Chapter 3, Yuugi is horrified to learn that the Soul Room of a Trigger-fueled villain was blocked off and "replaced" by another room that he describes as sterilized and unnatural, indicating that the new room overtook the villain's original personality.
    • It's heavily suggested that this happened to Wolfram as Yuugi can feel an echo around the bodyguard which was similar to the Trigger-fueled villain he dealt with earlier.
  • Didn't See That Coming: While giving his trademark "Am I an X? Or an X? Or an X?" opening, Nedzu is briefly stunned by Yuugi actually choosing an animal option (weasel) and explaining why he thinks so.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Shuzo Otaki, a member of the Big Five, has tried to have the Pro Hero Gang Orca dropped from KC's support division due to his dislike of orcas eating penguins (his favorite animal).
  • Disproportionate Reward:
    • Yuugi is already making plans to give Mirio a better hero costume as a reward for the young hero complimenting his best friend and making his day better.
    • In Chapter 8, Kaiba is revealed to have taken large control over the property rights of hearing aid technology so Yuugi can have easier access. And it's implied that he's plotting to antagonize Endeavor after learning that he was being a hostile jerk to Yuugi in his younger years.
  • Dissonant Serenity: In Kaiba's words, if someone isn't plotting a hostile takeover against a multibillion dollar company like KaibaCorp, then he must be running it wrong.
  • Doujinshi: An author on AO3 made a fanfic inspired by the series that focuses on Yuugi gifting a winged cat to his cousin Juudai.
  • Driving Question: Two thematic ones. What does it cost to build the future? And who decides who pays?
  • Easily-Overheard Conversation: Mokuba plants a bug on Pegasus so he, his brother and Yuugi can overhear his conversation with Dr. Aknadin and the secret plots they were concocting. Particularly with bringing Wolfram to I-Island along with creating a surrogate heir from his dead wife.
  • End of an Age: Tsunako, the leader of the yakuza, is aware that All Might is set to retire sometime in the decade. And doing so will result in drastic changes for her yakuza and those (heroes, villains, the MLA) who would try to harm them.
  • Enhanced Punch: Gozaburo's Quirk involved throwing punches that unleashed percussive blasts.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Yuugi gets one after meeting Mirio and learns that his costume isn't one of the designated fabrics used by KaibaCorp which can give him an opportunity in utilizing a new type of material.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Overhaul and two of his stooges get into a fight with Shigaraki and his Nomus after the latter group breaks them out of prison. It ultimately ends with Overhaul losing his henchmen, his arms and is taken as All For One's prisoner.
  • Family Extermination: In Chapter 5, the Yuuki brothers inform the Mutos that someone is targeting youths belonging to the Yuuki Clan and other families with Empathy Quirks.
  • The Family That Slays Together: Downplayed. Nagare confesses to his little cousin that the Yuuki Clan has had a hand in killing off undesirable targets of interest, especially if they pose as a danger to their family.
  • Fantastic Drug: The organization Villain Factory has used the drug Trigger on customers to create dangerous villains.
  • Fantastic Racism:
    • The Big Five are known to discriminate against heroes with mutant quirks. They repeatedly try to drop Gang Orca from KaibaCorp's sponsorship and have debated that Miruko's bunny theme will get her pregnant and out of a job.
    • It's also discussed that Quirk Supremacists often join the Meta Liberation Army or partake in Quirk history discussions to justify them practicing their racist beliefs.
  • First Kiss: Yuugi gets his first kiss with Ryou just before leaving I-Island.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: In Chapter 16, Yuugi takes a detour to avoid passing "a goth with too many facial piercings" and a guy in a hoodie. They're later revealed to have been Dabi and Shigaraki Tomura respectively.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Given that the second half of this crossover focuses on going to a Hero Academy, it's without question that the Three Amigos would get into Yuuei together.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Nagare mentions how Nighteye is stalking yakuza grounds because of a Quirk drug conspiracy.
    • After thwarting a kidnapping plot against the Kaiba brothers, Yami tells Yuugi that he could sense something specific that relates to who hired the kidnappers: penguins.
      • In the same scene, Mokuba mentions how KaibaCorp's windows can break with the right Quirk. A reference to how Gozaburo used his EnhancedPunching Quirk to break the windows before killing himself.
    • In chapter 13, Yuugi brings up how he knows more about tentacle hentai compared to Jounouchi and Izuku. Later in the chapter, Izuku would unlock an out of control Black Whip.
    • Dabi took great offense to Tabe killing two of Endeavor's sidekicks, especially since he called "dibs".
    • In Chapter 17, Yuugi spends his time trying to figure out how to control antigravity. With Izuku's help, he gets some answers courtesy of Gravity Master Ochako Uraraka.
    • The cryptic user "thefuturelaughsfromtheceiling" comes from a Japanese proverb which gives a hint to the one behind the screen. The proverb reads: “Speak of tomorrow and the rats in the ceiling laugh".
  • The Ghost:
    • Gang Orca and Miruko are mentioned as being sponsored by KaibaCorp's Support division.
    • Mokuba almost mentions Noah when talking to Yuugi in Chapter 4.
    • Sugoroku brings up the Shie Hassaikai and it's new leader who's interested in changing things in his favor. Though several members, including Overhaul, appear after Chapters 14.
  • Hanlon's Razor: While Mahado and Nagare had decent intentions in warning Yuugi about a potential serial killer who targets youth with empathy quirks, Yuugi is quick to chew them out for warning only him and not any other kids with empathy quirks who aren't affiliated with the Yuki Clan. He even states that they only show interest in him because of his strong quirk and how he rescued Mahado's daughter.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Despite Seto creating meaningful projects with KaibCorp alongside Yuugi, many other Support companies and high ranking scientific groups are quick to assume the worst given the company's militant past and ruthless king.
  • Heroic Bystander:
    • Deconstructed. Yuugi has to use his Quirk on a rampaging Trigger-fueled villain by entering his Soul Room. Due to his lack of training or license, he ends up being antagonized by the police chief for illegal Quirk usage.
    • This is played straight in Chapter 11 where he runs directly into Wolfram's direction so he can use his empathy Quirk on him to end his destructive rampage.
  • History Repeats: Just like how Yuugi awakened his Quirk after seeing his best friend gain a devastating blow on his leg from Bakugou, Izuku manages to unlock Black Whip after seeing his best friend be given mukade bites on his leg from Insector Haga.
  • I Have Your Wife: Mokuba ends up kidnapped while Seto and Yuugi are in I-Island with the intention of forcing Seto to not follow through with his upcoming investments.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Sugoroku goes for a shot of sake after learning from Yuugi that Toshinori, Izuku's trainer whom he terrorized, was the Number One Hero all along.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • In Chapter 11, Izuku has already inherited One For All.
    • And while he does take and pass the Entrance Exam, it's also revealed that Bakugou was taking the test too.
    • Aizawa has Class 1-A miss out on the First Year Orientation to do their Surprise Fitness Exam.
    • The General Education kids show up to intimidate Class 1-A before the Sports Festival.
  • Insecurity System:
    • Despite I-Island being proclaimed as a top of the line kingdom of superior technological advances, the security measures leave alot to be desired. There are hardly any competent security officers available, attendees like Yuugi can wander to restricted areas without consequence, and Seto learns that the security feed are easily tampered and erased by outside forces.
    • The same can be said about Yuuei's security system as the League of Villains are able to control their security systems and interfere with their radio waves, limiting access to the outside, and streaming visuals of the attack.
  • Intangible Price: According to Ishizu, mental Quirk users are able to exchange information or actions to receive a favor of their choosing. To get Yuugi to stop her from telling Nagare about the Realm of One For All, he tells her about the fourth survivor of the tainted vaccine epidemic as a substitue; Ishizu accepts this.
  • Interclass Friendship: The middle class Yuugi is able to maintain his friendship with the teen CEO Seto and later with the famous engineer Melissa Shield.
  • Internal Retcon: Ishizu explains that national superpowers have had a grim hand in human experimentation (China instigated Unit 44, the U.S. performed Executive Order 1388) in order to study the early emergence of quirks. But because the research from those atrocities contributed to greater understanding of quirks along with the head scientists not being punished for their crimes, the general public has minimized the negative implications for those and other related events for future generations.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Mokuba reveals to Yuugi about the abuse he and his brother endured after being adopted by Gozaburo followed by Seto taking over KaibaCorp.
    • In Chapter 8, Yuugi discovers that Present Mic and Aizawa's boyfriend are the same person.
    • One of the biggest examples happens in Chapter 12 where Yuugi, Jounouchi and Sugoroku become fully informed about All Might's civilian identity and how he blessed Izuku with One For All.
    • In Chapter 14, Yuugi would explain to Izuku and the Ishtar Siblings about Noah Kaiba being a victim of the tainted vaccine.
    • In Chapter 20, Nagare Yuuki learns about the Realm of One For All and how Izuku will be developing new Quirks.
  • Irony: To Yuugi's horror, he ends up in Yuuei with Present Mic, his most favorite hero as his new homeroom teacher.
  • It's Personal: The ending of Chapter 15 has Yuugi vowing to get revenge on whoever tried to kill Izuku through the tainted vaccine.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: In Chapter 11, Yuugi decides to seek out the rampaging Wolfram to defeat him with his Quirk after having had enough of all the suffering and misfortune he's given to his friends.
  • Locked in a Room: Not a room per say, but Chapter 7 features a barrier created from Yuugi's cube that protects/locks him and Melissa inside to keep them safe from an explosion. They spend their time getting to know each other while their organizations work to save them.
  • Logical Weakness: To Toshinori's dread, he realizes that any empathy Quirk user could discover his Number One Hero persona just by looking at his aura. This was how Yuugi uncovered his identity along with how he transferred his Quirk to Izuku.
  • Loophole Abuse: Before taking a photo of Bandit Keith talking with someone to report to Seto and Mokuba, Yuugi briefly wonders if what he's doing is illegal. Melissa assures him that it's on Keith and his acquaintance if they're having their conversation in broad daylight.
  • Lovecraftian Superpower: Yugi has no words to describe what Ryou's Quirk does except that it's "eldritch", "wrong" and that "it should not be".
  • Mental World: Like the first Book, Yuugi continues to venture into the Soul Rooms of other people for different but important reasons. And in Chapter 12, he manages to enter the Realm of One For All where he meets the Past Holders.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Yuugi, Izuku and the Yuukis discuss the idea that All Might and Nighteye were actually lovers and them splitting up was their "breakup".
  • Mob War: The first chapter opens with the yakuza getting into a fight with the Meta Liberation Army. Their conflict starts to escalate from Chapter 12 onwards.
  • Mood Whiplash: In Chapter 14, Yuugi breaks down crying after realizing that he got Hawks' hero name wrong mixed with everything else going wrong that day. Thankfully, he gets a hug from Izuku who had just awakened and offers him comfort during his breakdown. Then it turns comical when Yuugi brings up how Jounouchi is never going to stop comparing his newly awakened Black Whip Quirk to tentacle hentai.
  • Monumental Damage: The Tokyo Tower is stated to have been destroyed and rebuilt on three different occasions.
  • My God, You Are Serious!: Melissa gets like this when Seto reveals to her that he plans to dominate the spider silk industry to support his aerospace travel projects.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Miyashita, Re-Destro's secretary, is given the first name Shitai which translates to corpse.
  • No-Sell: Pegasus tries to use his Telepathy Quirk on Yuugi after cornering him in a bathroom. To his displeasure, Yami is able to block him and give him significant mental pain for trying to invade his other self's mind.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • The police chief isn't very fond of Yuugi due to losing to his grandfather in a past game.
    • According to Suguroku, he actually met two other Quirk users apart from All For One who were able to transfer Quirks to other people. He also mentions that he lost a multitude of friends/associates because of the King of Villains.
    • Apparently the games of Sugoruku's play group have to take place in reinforced buildings, because regular buildings get destroyed. Somehow.
    • Jounouchi brings up how Tensei Iida was filmed doing a cool but unauthorized skating trick which was leaked by his sidekicks.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Yuugi tries to convince Tanaka-ba, Hizashi and Aizawa that Kuriboh is a good cat by showing him some pictures on his phone. To his dismay, he accidentally shows them one with Kuriboh holding the decapitated head of an Endeavor toy in his mouth.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore:
    • In Chapter 11, Wolfram is officially dead and Kaiba gains complete control of his company.
    • In the following chapter, the Best Friend Squad plus Sugoroku discover All Might and Izuku's secrets.
    • In Chapter 13, Izuku unlocks Black Whip.
    • In the next chapter, Yuugi ends up rescuing Eri who ran away from Overhaul which in turn leads to the Eight Precepts' mass arrest. And following that, Overhaul would be abducted by Shigaraki and taken to meet All For One.
  • Odd Friendship: Ishizu takes a strong liking to Izuku thanks to his knowledge of Quirk history and how he's able to understand her research and expand with his own questions on the subject matter.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Yuugi has this reaction when he realizes that All Might and Toshinori Yagi are the same person.
    • Toshinori would react this way due to Yuugi revealing that he, Jounouchi and his grandfather discovered his secrets along with the fearsome reveal that All For One is still alive.
  • Original Character:
    • Tsunako, a cutthroat queen pin of the yakuza who is very familiar with hero society customs.
    • Martim Santos, a graduate student studying under Professor Hawkins who has a Translation Quirk.
  • Past-Life Memories: In Chapter 13, Yuugi and Izuku see memories of Yoichi's childhood along with his strained brotherhood with All For One.
  • The Password Is Always "Swordfish": The passcodes for Izuku and Jounouchi's phones is All Might's birthday. Yuugi is aware of this and uses this to access their phones.
  • Point of Divergence: Due to major developments occurring before the Yuuei Arc, several canon events were revolutionized.
    • To start, All Might is now only a guest teacher instead of a full time teacher after being warned about All For One's existence and how he should take better care of himself.
    • The trip to the USJ results in everything going normally since the League of Villains never invaded there to target Class 1-A.
    • The Sports Festival also takes several unique turns:
      • Instead of Bakugou it's Eijirou Kirishima who gives a speech during the opening event of the Sports Festival.
      • Shinsou makes it to the Top Four of the Final Round after defeating Bakugou.
      • During one of the match-ups, the League of Villains invade the stadium.
  • Powerful and Helpless: Empathy Quirks aren't not considered valuable among villain circles. The reasons vary but villains with empathy quirks don't last very long because of their strange abilities and being more susceptible to physical attacks.
  • Predatory Business: Seto explains that Industrial Illusions has maintained it's influence and power by taking over smaller corporations and seizing hold of the spider silk industry which is the main material used for hero outfits. He even states that Pegasus has tried to takeover KaibaCorp on three separate occasions.
  • Propaganda Piece: The end of Chapter 20 showcases a slanderous video with clips of the casualties that took place during the Sports Festival Attack. This was done by the League of Villains to challenge the people's faith in heroes by showing how "dependable" they are in the face of terror.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Mahado and Mana, from the Pharaoh's Memories Arc, are now members of the Yuuki family. Additionally, they are now father and daughter via adoption. It's also implied that Shadi is another member of the family.
  • The Reveal:
    • Chapter 8 explains why Yuugi was blacklisted as a body donor. It's because his blood became mutated after taking his vaccine which resulted in his blood becoming lethally poisonous if it interacts with another person's blood system. Case in point with Stain licking his blood which led to his death.
    • Chapter 11 sheds some new light on one of the victims of the Vaccine Incident. One of them was Noah Kaiba who was left in a comatose state before eventually passing. His father Gozaburo was able to order the Hero Commission to funnel all information on the vaccine and it's victims to him, making it harder for such information to be available to the public. He also had direct contact with Dr. Aknadin by providing him with the information in the hopes of finding whoever was responsible for his son's death.
    • Chapter 20 identifies who "thefuturelaughsfromtheceiling" was. It was Principal Nedzu who reached out to Yuugi for his potential and gave him the designs for his future inventions.
  • Roaring Rampage of Rescue: In Chapter 10, Mokuba is revealed to have been kidnapped and taken to I-Island to force Seto into backing out from his upcoming meeting. Yuugi decides to step up and rescue the younger brother with the help of Melissa Shield (by leading the group with her knowledge of the island) and Ryo Bakura (with his mental Quirk being of great help in incapacitating the kidnappers).
  • Rule of Symbolism: While hanging out at a cat cafe, Shouto has two black cats fighting each other while they're on his lap. This happens as he discusses his bitter feelings for the Fire side of his Quirk with Izuku and Yuugi.
  • Running Away to Cry: Yuugi does this in Chapter 16 after learning that the Yuuki Clan has killed people along with Nagare's reasoning for why he keeps following the boy.
  • Running Gag:
    • People encouraging Yuugi to milk Kaiba for everything he has.
    • Also people assuming that Yuugi will go to Shiketsu because of his lineage.
  • Sabotage to Discredit: Averted. Yuugi notices that the cube he's about to demonstrate at his I-Island presentation has a metal bulge, so he decides to swap it with another cube. He later learns that Wolfram used his Quirk to tamper with the cube in the hopes of ruining his credibility.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: In Chapter 5, Yuugi decides to ask Seto's help in pulling up restricted information involving his and Izuku's medical records using his advanced computer skills.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Yuugi comes up with the brilliant idea of leaving to the I-Island Expo for a week in order to get out of interacting with Izuku after learning that his trainer is All Might.
  • She's Not My Girlfriend: To Yuugi's frustration, everyone believes that Kaiba is his boyfriend or vice-versa.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Shown Their Work:
    • The author, once again, does an incredible job going into detail with medical terminology and how it applies to various characters in the story.
    • Some girl (or girl identifying) readers commended the description of Yuuei's girl bathroom being bloodier then the boys'.
  • Skewed Priorities: After learning that Izuku was training under All Might for months, Jounouchi expresses annoyance over the fact that his friend didn't give him a single autograph.

  • Spotting the Thread: In Chapter 20, Izuku uses an Energy Conversion Quirk while fighting the Nomu during the Sports Festival. Nagare picks up on this as it's the same Quirk that belonged to a low level villain named Sawada Chaco which is now being used by a former Quirkless kid and was also used by Wolfram during the I-Island Attack. This leads to him using his Psychometry Quirk on Izuku to learn more which is how he finds out about the Realm of One For All.

    • Yuugi thinks to himself how shonen anime always have the characters use violence to express their romantic feelings for each other. And the only time they imply sexual relations is if they make a second generation cast.
    • While visiting the Mustafu Museum, Yuugi and friends are advised that stealing the Egyptian exhibits is more acceptable then stealing anything related to Pro Hero history.

    • After meeting Mirio and learning how his costume is tailored to work with his Quirk, Yuugi tells him to take off his clothes...so he can study them.
    Sugoroku: Phrasing.
    • In a later chapter, he asks Izuku to take a picture of him shirtless. His reason is to give an incentive to his other friend Ryo Bakura to look up a certain Quirk.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Discussed. At Tanaka-ba's suggestion, Jounouchi uses the threat of beating up people who harass him without turning into a girl. This will determine which ones are actual creeps who would enjoy getting their butts handed to them by the blonde when he's worked up.

"Yami flickers, hard, and Yuugi looks up. Just in time to see black holes smear open across the sky.
  • What Are Records?: VCR tapes are practically nonexistent as Yuugi needed to explain to Izuku what a VCR is.
  • What's In It For Me?: While Mei is happy to advance Seto's space exploration projects with her designs, she always finds a way to get something bit out of her wealthy employer. She even pushes Yuugi to do the same so he won't be taken advantage of.
  • You Are Grounded!: Jii-chan is mentioned to have called Yuugi after his fight with Wolfram and assures him that he's banned from ever going to I-Island until he's graduated from Yuuei.
  • You Didn't Ask: Seto didn't inform Yuugi that he would be coming with him to the week long I-Expo trip and would be giving a presentation on their force field invention because of this mixed with how he assumed Yuugi already knew.
