Monster Prom: Senior Year is a Monster Prom Fanfiction by tenkay10

Question. What do Brian Yu - a Habitual Slacker and social outcast-, Vicky Schmidt - a lovesick, compulsive overachiever -, Oz - the dork to end all dorks -, and Amira Rashid - a brash hothead with a penchant for crime - have in common? Absolutely nothing. That doesn't matter though, because it is now, in their last year of high school, that their paths intersect for the first time. Can they, on the precipice of adulthood, learn to live, love, and grow as people? Or does High School not matter at all, and everyone should just crack open a textbook for once?

One thing's for sure... it should definitely be the second one, and the fact that it's the first one proves they haven't grown in the slightest.

you can find it here

Tropes in Monster Prom: Senior Year:

  • Absurdly Powerful Student Council: Vera sizes control of this to rule Spooky High.
  • Almost Kiss: Amira and Vera have had two of these moments so far, once in chapter 13 where they were interrupted by Vera getting a phone call and another in chapter 15 where Amira's mom shows up with a birthday cake
    • We get a third instance of this after they spend a rather romantic day together, with Amira saying that they're bound to get interrupted again if they try to kiss and the djinn even goes so far as to bet a thousand dollars that such an interruption occurring. she wins the bet when Zoe shows up and interrupts them at the exact moment Amira predicted.
  • Am I Just a Toy to You??: Amira keeps asking both herself and Vera this question on several occasions in relation to the nature of their relationship, especially whenever Vera acts nice or affectionate towards Amira. Given some of Amira's emotional hangups and the nature of her relationship with Vera it's a reasonable assumption.
  • Anger Born of Worry: after Scott nearly dies in a forest fire in the name of a group of furries, Vicky lays into Scott for abandoning the football team and endangering his own life for people that didn't actually care about him. too bad she didn't find out WHY Scott did that until after she yelled at him.
  • Animated Armor: Zoe pulls one of these via possession to give herself a physical form after losing her body to Z'gord.
  • Artists Are Attractive: One of the reasons Polly likes Oz
  • Attempted Rape: Polly winds up being cornered by a rather obsessive ex boyfriend who very nearly violates her, she narrowly saved when Oz drops the severed head of her boss on top of said ex and knocks him out with a spell
  • Back from the Dead: Occurs at the end of Chapter 12 with Oz, which sets up the plot of Chapter 13. Brian dies at the end of Chapter 54, only to be revived at the end of Chapter 57 by Milo to aid in the fight against Z'Gord.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Zoe's explanation of lettuce and tomato on a burger:
Zoe: Fruits and Vegetables. Now, ok… I know I just said “Fruits” and that probably sounds weird because there’s a lotta debate on whether one of these ingredients is a fruit or not, but this is a scientific lecture, so I’m only going to report the facts. Science is clear, to be a fruit you have to meet certain requirements, and our little elephant in the room here fulfills those requirements. There is no legitimate debate, it’s black and white. So Miranda, if anyone comes up to you like “oh it’s not a fruit” tell ‘em to shove it because it absolutely is. Lettuce is a fruit, end of discussion.
  • Benevolent Boss: Penny Greene in chapter 18, she is kind, jovial, and silly woman who frequently gives Polly emotional support and does her best to ensure that the ghost succeeds in her new job there's a very specific reason she has a soft spot for Polly.
  • The Bet: Chapter 18 has one between Oz and Vera, with the former betting the latter that Polly could clean up her act and get a job in less than a week; if Polly succeeds, the ghost gets a cat she's wanted to adopt for a while. she wins with a little help from Oz.
    • a long running bet that started in chapter 5 had Polly bet Oz that if he could ever beat her in a chess match, she'd go on a date with him. he eventually wins in chapter 13
  • Big Bad: John Smith/Z'Gord.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Two examples:
    • Between Polly and Oz in Chapter 18.
Oz and Polly...pull closer together. On the morning of November 6th, Oz and Polly Geist kissed for the very first time. This moment belongs to just the two of them.
    • Between Vicky and Brian in Chapter 52.
  • Big Damn Reunion: in chapter 13 when Polly finds out that Oz has been successfully resurrected, the first thing the ghost girl does is give the shadow boy a big hug and expresses just how happy she is to have him back
  • Binge Montage: chapter 12 has one of these with Polly and Amira getting absolutely blitzed out of their minds.
  • Birds of a Feather: Oz and Zoe's friendship as geeky eldritch beings.
  • Broken Pedestal: Amira suffers extremely hard from this when she meets her racing idol 'Justice Vasquez'. Who reveals that he lied about his humble origins to sell merch and basically crushes Amira's dreams of ever being a pro race car driver. this is what sets Amira on the path to becoming an abrasive criminal as well as costing her the very first friend and crush she ever had.
  • Bully Turned Buddy: Damien and Brian after they clear up a misunderstanding regarding the former's Cock and Amira and Vicky after a particularly vicious dodgeball match.
  • But Now I Must Go: how Amira reacts to finding out that she's royalty, due to the fact that she feels more at home in monsteropolis than in the country she was born; she decides to give up the throne and return home but promises to keep contact with her family from now on.
  • Captured on Purpose: Vera does one of these to try and figure out how to deal with the false accusation that she killed the mayor of monsteropolis; her friends and family don't exactly take this well, considering she never told them it was intentional.
  • Cathartic Scream: Vera does one of these into a pillow to try and maintain her composure in response to Scott quitting the football team after taking Vicky's advice. Thus jeopardizing all of her hard work as a coach
  • Character Development: It's literally everywhere, everyone's getting some of it, and it's AMAZING.
  • Chekhov's Boomerang: remember that tampon Amira used in a blood ritual in chapter 6? We finally get to see where it came from in chapter 26 when it's used to test out if the cast's newly invented time travel spell actually works.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: the talking cat that appeared in Valerie's shop in chapter 10. He turned out to be Juan the magical Latino cat who had been sent back in time from chapter 26 in order to test the effect of time travel on a living being.
  • Chekhov's Time Travel: played with, the main cast INVENT time travel through the use of magic and a rip in space time Brian and Valerie have access to for the sole purpose of preventing Miranda's assassination.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Vicky tries to call Vera out on her love for dragon heat in reponse to the gorgon calling her a furry. Leading to this hilarious exchange.
    Vicky: That’s great, it’s just I’M NOT A FURRY.
Vera: I totally buy that coming from the girl with the full Dragon Heat hardcover collection…
Vicky': Uh, you took a ride on the sexcalibur too, need I remind you.
Vera: Yeah? I took it like a champ, what’s your point?
  • Conveniently Cellmates: Vera and The Interdimensional Prince, the former is NOT happy about it.
  • Cool Kid-and-Loser Friendship: Oz with Miranda and Polly, they're some of the most popular girls and school and he's the 'dork to end all dorks', nuff said.
  • Crapsack World: played for laughs. The world of monsters sucks and is full of psychopaths and maniacs, but it's almost always lampooned and the cast takes every opportunity to mock it
  • Crapsaccharine World: Monsteropolis in particular is implied to be this by Vera
Vera: That… is the biggest ruse ever pulled. The truth is, Monstropolis’ image is exactly the paper-thin veneer you know it to be. The point was never civility, it was the appearance of civility. To those profiting from it, that appearance is the only thing worth the investment. The lives of people don’t matter… the only thing that matters is the status of living here. As such, no one bats an eye when the civility I just told you of is built on an uncountable number of horrendous crimes… crimes which are, by some measure, perpetrated by the city itself.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Brian turns out to be a case of this. after traveling back in time and being locked in a dungeon to await execution, Brian not only manages to easily escape the dungeon with nothing more than some magic supplements and a severed hand. but also fights his way through the entirety of the Vanderbilt castle guard, stealing some of their weapons along the way, and singlehandedly saves Miranda from Pheel the Eel, all without breaking a sweat.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Amira has one of these. growing up in the ghetto, getting arrested as a kid on her BIRTHDAY nonetheless! Amira's had a rough go of it.
    • it only gets worse when it's revealed that the day she was arrested was also the day her racing idol Justice Vasquez crushed her dreams and the day she lost her best friend.
    • Brian is the victim of one of these too. having gotten caught up in a zombie apocalypse in his original world that eventually lead to his brutal death and subsequent zombification after sacrificing himself to obtain the cure. Luckily, he got a second chance afterwards.
  • Darkest Hour: chapter 57. to summarize, Vicky has just crossed the Despair event Horizon and unleashed Z'gord onto the world who is now bringing about the apocalypse and Monsteropolis has descended into complete and total chaos with murderous cultists roaming the streets as reality is on the verge of collapse. All of the casts' previous struggles almost seem trivial.
  • Death Glare: Vera is the queen of these, dishing out tons of them throughout the story, mostly towards Vicky.
  • Defrosting the Ice Queen: Amira and Vera accomplish this with each other, their formerly abrasive treatment of each other slowly starts to dissipate as they grow closer.
  • Did You Think I Can't Feel?: Oz Gives this speech to Polly right before they're about to have sex, primarily because he doesn't believe her when she says that she loves him. in his defense he was dead for most of Polly's character development so he had no idea what she had gone through and how much she had changed.
  • Disappointed in You: Oz hits Polly with this speech in chapter 18 after he catches her sneaking off to parties after explicitly forbidding her from doing so for her own good.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Most of the cast has performed this at some point but Vera seems to be guilty of this more than anybody:
    • she manipulated Damien into attacking Brian by framing the zombie for the dissappearance of Damien's Cock because he mocked her on their first meeting by comparing her to green skinned pop-culture characters
    • She had Amira mutilate one of her employees, destroy his entire life's work, kill his mother, and then frame him for it when he outlived his usefulness although that's not why she did all of that to him. The real reason was that he made her listen to an hour long anime playlist that consisted of hentai moans over electronic music; granted the guy was a huge pervert but still!
    • she attempted to fatally poison Brian when the football team paid more attention to his advice than hers.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: during their encounter with Dimitri in chapter 17, Joy constantly drooling over the attractive vampire gets both her and Faith bound in magic ropes, forcing Zoe to save them.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Dimitri basically peddles this in prison to put himself into a position of power amongst the inmates, charging $100 per hour for looking with an additional $50 for touching. According to the vampire he's made approximately 2 million dollars doing this, primarily through crowdsourcing.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: what occurs in chapter 57 and 58 as a result of Z'gord returning. Thankfully the main cast manages to stop it.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: the title of chapter 17 is 'Zoe Explains in Excruciating Detail Why Season 3 Is the Best Season of American Horror Story' and the very first few lines of the aforementioned chapter are:
Zoe: And that’s why Season 3 is the best season of American Horror Story!
    Oz: That was...excruciating detail.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: A downplayed version. Chapter 17 focuses almost entirely on the Coven and Zoe, with the only major characters appearing in a subplot (of which a member of the coven is also involved in) while everyone else only makes brief cameo appearances. It's the first chapter where NONE of the color squad is in the spotlight.
  • Friendless Background: Oz starts off as this until a bit of blackmail, courtesy of Miranda, causes the shadow boy to develop a strange friendship with the mermaid princess; he starts making plenty of friends really quickly after that.
  • From a Single Cell: Oz claims to be able to accomplish this due to his mystical abilities he utilizes this as a failsafe by giving a small piece of himself to Polly just in case Z'Gord kills him
  • Give Geeks a Chance: Polly and Oz, in fact his kind and geeky personality is the primary reason Polly fell for Oz
  • Going Cold Turkey: Polly has to do this as part of a bet Oz made with Vera in chapter 18, meaning no drugs or alcohol. surprisingly enough, with Oz's support, she manages to stick with it for the whole week.
  • Happily Adopted: Amira with her snake mom and Vera with her own family.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Oz pulls this in chapter 7, he gets better
    • Brian did this too in his human life to stop the zombie apocalypse. He also gets better.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: chapter 16 has one of these when Liam, Zoe, and Oz find Scott and Damien doing pottery in a rather… questionable state of dress.
Scott and Damien are in art class, doing some pottery. Together. They’re sitting one in front of the other, with Scott in the back, guiding Damien’s hands. Also, Scott’s shirtless. You know, like bros.
    • slightly subverted when it's revealed that Damien and Scott knew EXACTLY how that situation looked and were doing it as a prank on Liam, Zoe, and Oz. Which did not work at all.
  • Hidden Backup Prince: this is what Amira essentially was, having been raised under an adopted mother who worked for her family to protect the royal lineage, seeing as her djinn status made her the sole heir to the throne.
  • Hidden Depths: every single monster from the player characters to the main love interests and even a few side characters show this in spades, each and everyone of them has their own issues, secrets, and hangups that they're trying to work through together.
  • It's a Costume Party, I Swear!: Vera pulls this on Vicky to trick her into wearing a penguin outfit in chapter 13.
  • Interactive Narrator: a small instance of this occurs in chapter 17 when Zoe complains about the title of the chapter. After rejecting two of the narrator's suggestions, the narrator calls Zoe a brat for being picky and moves on with the chapter.
  • Interclass Friendship
    • Oz and Miranda, after the latter has a heel-face turn and apologizes to Oz for blackmailing him , vowing to be a better friend.
    • Vera and Amira, although Amira keeps her social class hidden from practically everyone out of shame.
  • In Love with the Mark: Vera's clearly got an evil plan involving the mayor of Monsteropolis and Amira's a pawn within this scheme, but it's becoming increasingly obvious that the gorgon is developing real feelings for the djinn. Which is making it harder for her to carry out said scheme.
  • I Will Wait for You: Polly does this after Oz Sacrifices himself to Z'Gord to save the school it pays off later on when Oz returns in chapter 13
  • Justified Title: every single chapter title either sums up the whole plot or touches on a major event that occurs within the chapter, highlights include:
    • Chapter 1: Brian gets his ass kicked
    • Chapter 2: Oz gets blackmailed
    • Chapter 4: Brian disposes of a body
    • Chapter 7: Oz starts the apocalypse
    • Chapter 8: Brian makes a friend
    • Chapter 9: Vicky really gets into Dragon Heat
    • Chapter 12: Polly and Amira make the hangover part IV
    • Chapter 13: Oz loses his virginity
    • Chapter 17: Zoe Explains in Excruciating Detail Why Season 3 Is the Best Season of American Horror Story
    • Chapter 18: Oz and Polly adopt a cat
    • Chapter 30: Vicky and Blobert Make Everyone Feel Better, Yaaaay!!!
    • Chapter 35: Zoe Gets a Roommate.
    • Chapter 63: Brian Kicks Some Ass
  • Lampshade Hanging: so, SO MANY lampshades. It's rare the characters will go through a scene, much less a chapter, without doing this to a degree
  • Lady-In-Waiting: Sayta, Amira's adopted mother, is revealed to be one of these to the djinn's biological mother.
  • Losing Your Head: Polly's new boss, Penny Greene, embodies this trope with her head being attached to her body with nothing but a green ribbon. Penny makes use of her headless state to both prank and save Polly on separate occasions.
  • Lousy Lovers Are Losers: When they finally do get together, Polly eventually slips that Oz isn't exactly the best at sex, in that he's never managed to make her climax during the time they've been together. Although that's more due to a lack of experience on Oz's part than anything else, something Polly is more than happy to fix.
  • Love at First Sight: well more like 'love at first touch', Polly almost immediately starts developing feelings for Oz when she realizes that she can actually FEEL the physical contact between them as opposed to the numbness that comes from everything else.
  • Loving a Shadow: Vicky's perception of Scott and the basis of her crush, she gets over it though.
  • Medium Awareness: Played with. Zoe frequently leans on the fourth wall and refers to Oz as a 'main character' and that Vera 'doesn't appear in this episode' during chapter 17 where only cardboard cutouts of the gorgon appear but she's acting like she's in a television show rather than a fanfiction. Then again the fic is stylized to be a hypothetical TV show script so it's tough to tell what level of medium awareness Zoe has.
  • Mirror Monologue: Brian does one to psych himself up to ask out Valerie:
Brian: Alright… I can do this. Today’s the day, I’m gonna ask her out. Just keep it casual. Say “Hey… how are you… do you wanna go on a date.” (WINCING) Have I always been this ugly…? (CATCHING HIMSELF) Agh! I’m psyching myself out! It’s not that big a deal… it isn’t! I just… I just gotta say it. And if she says no, then…(DEPRESSED) At least we’ll still be friends…Why did I say that shit, am I trying to make myself fail? Idiot. (POINTING TO REFLECTION) Idiot. Alright.
  • Mysterious Past: Amira goes hard on this one, she tries her absolute hardest to keep people from finding out where she came from. it's later revealed she grew up in the poorer side of Monsteropolis and was arrested on her birthday at a young age. She isn't proud of either of those facts
  • Naked on Revival: occurs when Oz is resurrected in chapter 13, he is naturally upset about it.
  • No Prison Segregation: Zig Zagged, while Dimitri and The Interdimensional Prince are both men in a women's prison they both have reasons for being there as opposed to a men's prison: the former because the warden REALLY likes Dimitri's appearance as do most of the inmates while the latter was simply mistaken for a woman. Although they are the only two men in the entire prison so it's not exactly a co-ed prison.
  • Not So Above It All: Joy is usually the focused and level headed one that is devoted to her role as a hero, but all of that goes out the window the minute Dimitri shows up who causes the witch to turn into a hot and bothered mess who makes no effort to hide her attraction to her arch enemy.
  • Oblivious to Love: Scott towards Vicky, to an almost painful degree.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: a conversation between Scott and Vicky with the former needing the latter's advice on how to choose between a task that requires his brains and another that requires his brawn Vicky thought he was talking about the dragon's heat book club and the football team respectively, Scott was actually talking about the football team and his role as the newly crowned king of the furries respectively
  • Only Sane Man: Brian usually fills this role and does a lot of the Lampshade Hanging by pointing out the ridiculousness of the situations he's found himself in, but there are plenty of times when he joins in on whatever insane adventures his friends happen to be doing
  • Pet the Dog: Vera has been having more and more of these moments towards Amira as time has gone on but chapter 16 has some of the most significant examples:
    • Vera arranges for Amira to get the opportunity to drive a legendary race car on the track where they do the pegasus 500 race, of which Amira is a huge fan
    • Vera buys Amira a modified version of the aforementioned race car's model, which is Amira's dream car.
    • Vera sees to it that Amira gets a whole new wardrobe of expensive clothes from a high end shop.
    • it's implied that Vera also planned to take Amira out to a classy restaurant later as well.
  • Prison Episode: chapter 37 'The Shawshank Re Verademption' (no, that's not a typo.)
  • Prison Changes People: Vera gets some serious character development while behind bars, which includes coming to terms with her feelings for Amira.
  • Put on a Bus: Polly and Vera at the start of season 2. the former mysteriously disappeared without any explanation while the latter was hauled off to jail, both of which set up some of the major conflicts of the season.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Miranda gives one to her sisters in chapter 28 after none of them did anything to try and stop her assasination.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: Amira in chapter 43, where she discovers that she's actually the crown princess of a far of country.
  • Recovered Addict: Penny Greene, Polly's boss at her new job, is revealed to be one of these at the end of chapter 18 and has been clean for three years straight. It's also why she acts so nice towards the party ghost.
    • Polly becomes this to a degree after Oz helps her get her act together over the course of chapter 18.
  • Rightful King Returns: subverted in that Amira refuses to take the throne upon returning to her home country as she knows perfectly well she isn't suited to lead a country nor does she have any desire to do so.
  • Rousing Speech: given by DAMIEN of all people, oddly enough, in the face of the apocalypse:
Damien: "See, that’s where you’re misunderstanding. It’s not that I don’t care, it’s that I don’t believe for a second that thing is really going to end the world. No, I’m certain we’re going to overcome this. Don’t underestimate the world…It’s harder to end than you realize."
  • School Bullying Is Harmless: subverted. Apparently getting her favorite toy destroyed by bullies as a child is what set Vera off on the path to becoming a ruthless criminal mastermind and even as an adult she STILL isn't over it.
  • Schoolyard Bully All Grown Up: the warden of Vera's prison, who just so happens to be Vera's bully specifically.
  • Script Fic: Unlike most examples of this trope, the fic is written in the style of a television screenplay.
  • Seeks Another's Resurrection: Polly tries her hardest to accomplish this for Oz after he saves her and Miranda from Z'Gord. she eventually succeeds
  • Self-Constructed Being: Oz states that he's one of these. Subverted in that, while he can regenerate his body he can't regenerate his soul.
  • Self-Restraint: According to Vera, her various contacts would allow her to escape from prison whenever she wanted but she chooses to stay in order to complete her plans.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: the basic plot of chapter 26. Miranda gets assassinated and the cast decides to use a time travel spell they created to prevent her death outright.
  • Shirtless Captives: justified with Dimitri, as he uses his sex appeal to get favors in prison and thus walks around shirtless all the time. (that and he's apparently allergic to shirts)
  • Shout-Out: When time traveling to prevent Miranda's tragic death. in chapter 26, Zoe is absolutely insistent on using a certain Blue Police Box to do it with despite it being completely unnecessary for the trip, unfortunately it's not bigger on the inside.
  • Simultaneous Arcs: It's revealed that the events of chapter 18 'Oz and Polly adopt a cat' and chapter 14 'Vicky Ruins Everything' happened at the same time.
  • The Sponsor: Oz becomes this to Polly in chapter 18, keeping an eye on her habits to make sure she stays sober, writes her resume and helps her get a job, and even giving her some much needed emotional support and motivation when she needs it.
  • Stable Time Loop: done with the tampon Amira used to help Vera win the school election. it gets sent back from chapter 26, allowing Brian to obtain it in chapter 6 where he gave it to Amira which would allow her relationship to develop with Vera enough that the Djinn is able to obtain it from her in chapter 26 just to send it back all over again.
  • Street Smart: Amira has this in spades, having grown up in the ghetto, just barely managing to scrape on by. That knowledge has saved her and her friends on more than one occassion.
  • The Shut-In: Vicky becomes one temporarily when she gets hooked on Dragon's Heat fanfiction in chapter 9
  • Time Travel Episode: chapter 26
  • Trash of the Titans: Polly's apartment when Oz first moves in, it took them two days to clean the whole thing (the majority of which was from the mold stuck to the floor)
  • Tranquil Fury: Vera's reaction to finding out Vicky told Scott to quit the football team Best demonstrated in these lines:
Vera: (CALM) But you know Scott, don’t you? He’ll misunderstand just about anything. Just tell me what this “advice” of yours was about and we’ll try to unravel this bullshit fucking piece of garbage trash-pile ass-fucking mess you put us in again you brainless cum-guzzling whore.
  • The Usurper: Amira's biological aunt, Malkia, attempts to do this to her niece. Unfortunately she underestimates Amira's intelligence.
  • Wardens Are Evil: not only is the warden of Vera's prison trying to get her assasinated, but she's also Vera's childhood bully that is the primary cause of most of Vera's inner demons.
  • Wham Line: occurs at the very end of chapter 24.
    Valerie: Brian, Miranda's dead.
  • What Did I Do Last Night?: the basic plot of chapter 12, aptly named 'Polly and Amira Make The Hangover Part IV'.
    • a more serious version of this occurs in chapter 13 when Polly tries to figure out whether or not she had sex with Oz.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: chapter 18, 'Oz and Polly adopt a cat'
  • Worthy Opponent: Damien and Brian admit this to each other after the latter manages to survive a FIFTEEN round boxing match against the former.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Oz spends almost the entirety of chapter 18 beating this into Polly's head, insisting that she can change for the better and sticks by her even when she falters.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: This is basically Brian's entire backstory as to how he became a zombie in the first place. or at least half of it...
