In a Superhuman society, where Izuku Midoriya is Quirkless, he is seen as worthless and a social outcast. But one day he wakes up with a brown... monkey tail? Izuku believes this new power is a Quirk, but in reality, it is not a Quirk at all, but it is a power that will allow him to become the Greatest Hero Of All Time. He is Deku: The Golden Saiyan Hero of Hope.

Deku: The Golden Saiyan Hero of Hope is a My Hero Academia fanfiction by Mr. Narrative where Izuku gains Saiyan abilities and would become the greatest hero of all time.

The story can be found here, while the fanfiction.net version is found here.

Note: Spoilers beyond Season 3 will be unmarked.

Tropes:

  • Action Dad: Hisashi is not only a loving husband and father, but he is also a powerful Saiyan warrior who rivals the feats of All Might, according to Endeavor. He is weaker than All For One at his strongest but he does know about the Dragon Balls.
  • Adaptation Personality Change:
    • As the result of Midoriya's Saiyan heritage manifesting at the start of the series, he becomes notably less neurotic and shy in his interactions with others, but can still lapse into his introverted personality when being thrust into the spotlight or dealing with the opposite gender.
    • Momo herself became more confident in her abilities after bonding with Izuku, and gaining the ability to use Ki is also a factor.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • With his new abilities and confidence, Midoriya's toxic dynamic with Bakugou becomes less antagonistic and any misunderstandings between them are quickly resolved at the end of the U.A. Sports Festival.
    • Going by the summary of the story above, expect any girl who's close friends with Midoriya being liable to have romantic feelings for the Saiyan/Human hybrid teen.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: Midoriya is by no means ugly, but he's regarded as "plain-looking" in the canon series. Here, Izuku's practically a Tall, Dark, and Handsome Hunk after his Saiyan abilities awaken, making most of the male population riddled with envy and admiration while the female populace is swoon for his "adonis-like" appearance.
  • Adaptational Badass: In general, nearly all of the characters get this treatment to keep up with Midoriya's growing power. It gets to the point where readers are criticizing how unrealistic it becomes similar to the Power Level scaling in the Dragon Ball series.
    • Midoriya, as he first awakens his Saiyan heritage, grows to become more powerful than the rest of his peers in U.A. High. To point of being able to defeat the original Noumu and all of the students in the Hero Course at the end of the U.A. Sports Festival.
    • Hisashi is a Disappeared Dad who works overseas in canon. Chapter 8 reveals that Hisashi is a Saiyan warrior who's abilities are implied to rival those of All Might himself.
    • Wolfram was a powerful villain in the first movie, being able to manipulate metal, gaining Super-Strength from All For One, and becoming an One-Winged Angel through the Quirk Enhancer. This version instead, is capable of manipulating atoms and plasma (the latter gained from All For One).
    • Hoo boy, All for One in Chapter 29. Not only is he a Power Parasite who's capable of stealing Quirks and bestowing them onto others but is also able to use Ki himself (including a unique ability performed by Izuku's grandfather). It's taken up a notch after he uses the Quirk Enhancer, healing him of his previous crippling injuries and supercharging all other Quirks at his disposal.
  • Adaptational Heroism: All For One himself gets this treatment in the story. Instead of becoming the shadow dictator of Japan in the past for the sole reason of inflating his megalomania (according to his brother) underneath the pretense of peace and order, he's also motivated by the loss of his parents and seems much more caring of his frail younger brother as well. This is zig-zagged however, as All For One after using the Quirk Enhancer also acts like Frieza.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: In the canon manga, Izuku scores an overall 4th rank in Class 1-A and would consistently write down notes about others in his hero journals. Here, he's tied with Momo in 1st rank and is able to write his observations of another's strengths and weaknesses in a matter of seconds.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Surprisingly, Endeavor. While his attitude and relationship with his family are still fairly the same, he secretly reveals to harbor guilt for this treatment and has a positive friendship with Hisashi.
  • Adaptational Skimpiness: The formal dresses that both Yaoyorozu Momo and Melissa Shield wear in the events of Two Heroes are described as "exposing a generous amount of cleavage" in the narration, compare to how they're seen in the original canonical movie.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change:
    • Nana's Quirk in the canon manga is revealed to allow her to merely float in the air. Here, her Quirk is called Empathy, which allows her to sense the emotions of others and being able to feel it themselves.
    • Wolfram's Quirks are changed from Super-Strength and Magnetism Manipulation to outright manipulating atoms and plasma in the fic.
  • Almighty Janitor: This seems to be the case with Hisashi, as All Might is still known to be the World's Strongest Man despite the former surpassing him in power.
  • Alternate Universe: The setting of MHA takes place in the DBZ universe (specifically Universe 7) after a thousand and a half years.
  • Attempted Rape: This nearly happen to Itsuka in Chapter 10, thankfully, Midoriya was just happened to be in the right place at the right time due to his training routine.
  • Battle Aura: Deku gains this whenever he displays One for All or his Ki abilities. After sharing his Ki with others; Ochako, Momo, and Mei are also capable of this by tapping in the leftover embers.
  • Cannot Talk to Women: Played for Laughs. While Midoriya becomes more confident of himself thanks to his steady growth with One for All and his Saiyan abilities, he still finds it hard to talk to women due to his introverted personality.
  • Cassandra Truth: It's justified as not many people believed that Midoriya was able to perform such extreme physical feats without using a Quirk during the U.A. Sports Festival arc, given that it's usually performed with a Quirk in a world where Everyone Is a Super. After Aizawa spells it out for them during the first phase of the tournament, this made Midoriya's feats and abilities more impressive to his peers and the public.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: After undergoing intense physical training from Inner Deku, Midoriya can perform such incredible feats and acrobatics without using One for All or Ki during the Obstacle Race in the U.A. Sports Festival arc.
  • Chick Magnet: Combine with his Nice Guy heroic tendencies, Tall, Dark, and Handsome appearance, and growing power; Midoriya is this as he attracts the attention of many women, especially his victory after the U.A. Sports Festival arc, where he's rated as the hottest U.A. Freshman complete with comments and memes of him fighting shirtless.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Downplayed, but anytime that Midoriya gets close to a girl (whether through common interests or sexual desire), expect either Momo, Ochako, and later Kyouka to be slightly peeved.
  • Covered in Kisses: It's mentioned that, when Izuku and everyone there was about to leave I-Island, Melissa gave him this as a goodbye. Needless to say that the red lipstick perfectly blended with his Luminescent Blush while the girls of 1-A weren't at all happy.
  • Covert Pervert: Momo, Ochako, Kyouka, and many other young women show signs of these towards Izuku throughout the story.
  • Crime of Self-Defense: Implied. Itsuka seemingly would've had to allow herself to be raped because of anti-quirk usage laws preventing her from using her Quirk to defend herself.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Izuku's fight with Muscular became this for both fighters. In this fight, it first became a Hopeless Boss Fight for Izuku. Muscular has the ability to double his strength and speed every ten seconds so despite a great showing against him (the skills Izuku has shown would stomp Canon Muscular many times over) Muscular successfully defeats Izuku. Izuku then witnesses Muscular threaten Kota after trying to save Izuku, he then crosses the threshold into Super Saiyan, and finally, Izuku is the one to be the stomper to Muscular.
    • Chapters 29 and 30. All throughout chapter 29, All For One is unstoppable especially when he reversed the damage All Might that left him in the crippled state. Gran Torino, All Might, and Izuku were unable to stop All For One who is at this point Frieza. Then he kills All Might. This then puts Izuku in Goku's shoes and angers him to the point of going Super Saiyan. Suddenly, all throughout chapter 30, the tables have turned; All For One cannot come close to defeating Super Saiyan Izuku.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Bakugou vs Ochako in the U.A. Sports Festival. Most of the fight went similar to canon until some of Midoriya's Ki that he shared in the Calvary Battle is in use. Bakugou still wins but Ochako gave him a solid punch and fired a Kamehameha Wave before collapsing.
  • Death by Adaptation: Simply put, All Might die in the final battle against All for One. So unless there are Dragon Balls to revive him and about half of Kamino City (they exist and King Kai, Dende, and most likely Piccolo are also in this time), Toshinori Yagi officially becomes one more Spirit Advisor in Izuku's Mindscape.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: Many of Midoriya's battles against the other students, along with given support to their efforts, ends with this sort of treatment.
  • Determinator: Granted it is incredibly difficult to put Izuku in this situation many heroes and villains note how hard it is to stop him from saving people. By the time Izuku first awakens Super Saiyan, his arms are broken (his right arm broken by Muscular and his left by overusing Pride for All) his ki is slowly being drained and is basically on Adrenaline, and by the time Bakugou is captured Izuku is barely awake and in a Heroic RRoD, he just doesn't quit by also going directly into the portal to save him. (Though not without first telling Todoroki to bring Senzu Beans when they meet again before he jumps in.)
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • In regards to his canon self, Izuku is already a Born Winner who later inherits One For All.
    • Endeavor holds an one-sided rivalry to All Might due to the latter being the No.1 Hero and an interesting self-perceived view of him. On the other hand, he's on great terms with Hisashi and thinks quite highly of the man while also commenting on him being potentially stronger than All Might; it's quite surprising. Then again, Hisashi is more of an underground hero like Goku who doesn't care much about the spotlight in contrast to The Symbol of Peace All Might.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: When Inner Deku temporarily taps into Super Saiyan God for a message to Stain, Beerus woke up for a small bit.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Thanks to his Saiyan abilities, Midoriya was able to spot the flaws of how he was using One for All initially, and developed "One for All: Full Cowl" before the U.A. Entrance Exam.
  • The Force Is Strong with This One: One of the Midoriya's Saiyan abilities is being able to sense the Power Levels of the living beings around him. Like in Dragon Ball, the levels don't accurately gauge the overall power of the individuals, but for their valor, focus, and purity of heart.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Midoriya ended up on better terms with Bakugou thanks to his fast and steady growth.
    • Endeavor atoning for his abusive tendencies and seemingly on a better note with Todoroki afterward.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Similar to canon where Midoriya is narrating of how he became the World's Greatest Hero, the narration states that Midoriya will instead be the Greatest Hero Of All Time.
  • Genius Bruiser: Midoriya, on top of being a powerhouse, is quite intelligent, able to think of plans within moments. Chapter 12 is a display of him thinking of ways to foil other teams, including a fake headband.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Midoriya still gaining One for All and becoming All Might's successor despite gaining abilities from his Saiyan heritage.
    • Aizawa still singled Midoriya out in the Quirk Apprehension Test due to holding back his potential.
    • Endeavor still seems to put his own family through hell to fulfill his ambitions despite his close ties with someone who did acknowledge him.
  • Interspecies Romance: Midoriya is a natural Human/Saiyan Hybrid, thus making a relationship with any of the female gender fitting this trope.
  • It's Personal: Midoriya and Bakugou's match during the semi-finals of the Sports Festival, to the point that it was made a No-Holds-Barred Contest with a Loser Leaves Town stipulation.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Midoriya's basically a mini-All Might; as he's capable of directing strong pressures of wind that cause tremors from his One for All-enhanced punch, fast enough to out blitz Iida and create afterimages, and tough enough to tank Bakugou's explosions with little damage and that is before you factor in his Saiyan abilities and Ki control. Super Saiyan Izuku? So long All For One.
  • Loophole Abuse: What the three rapists exploited when they tried to sexually assault Itsuka. Given that they can overpower her naturally due to their heteromorphic bodies, but wouldn't break the Quirk-Regulation Laws as they're not "technically" using their Quirks to commit the act. Luckily, Midoriya easily put a stop to them without using One for All or any of his Saiyan abilities (which is not a Quirk, but is thought to be one).
  • Loser Leaves Town: See No-Holds-Barred Contest. If Midoriya had lost, he would've had to give up his chances of a hero career, while if Bakugou lost, he would have to grant anyone request Midoriya made (including, theoretically, giving up on his hero career). As Kirishima explains, it was to force both Midoriya and Bakugou to go all out and finally decide who was the better man between them.
  • Meaningful Echo: After the battle against Wolfram, Midoriya says the same line to Melissa from the fateful day All Might chose him as his successor.
  • No-Holds-Barred Contest: Midoriya vs. Bakugou, Round Two, Sports Festival Edition. And boy, is it brutal.
  • One-Man Army: It's clear as day that out of all of his peers in U.A. High School, Midoriya is not one to be underestimated, considering his Saiyan heritage and position as All Might's successor.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Considering his crippling injuries, All For One prefers to let others carry out his dirty work and always stay within the shadows to monitor the events throughout the story. After Wolfram loses in his battle against All Might and Deku (especially with his two most powerful Quirks being enhanced to the point of being a Physical God), the villain decides to take matters in his own hands when he's now in the possession of the Quirk Enhancer.
  • Polyamory: As a result of him being such a Chick Magnet (see above), lots of girls have the hots for Izuku. According to the Relationship tags on AO3, the confirmed girls are Yaoyorozu Momo, Uraraka Ochako, Midnight, Mount Lady, Kendou Itsuka, Hatsume Mei, Tsuyu Asui, Hadou Nejire, Utsushimi Camie, Melissa Shield, Kodai Yui, Todoroki Fuyumi, and Jirou Kyouka.
  • Running Gag: Midoriya giving someone a Senzu Bean, which heals them instantly and causes them to accuse him of dealing drugs.
  • Scars Are Forever: Izuku gains a large X shape scar on his chest after the battle against Wolfram.
  • Shout-Out: There's a number of nods to Dragon Ball Z Abridged such as "Kaio-what", and Bakugou cast in the light of Vegeta (being called "Best buddy" having a "Midoriya Button")
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: A contributing cause for the girls falling for Midoirya.
  • Spanner in the Works: Hisashi Midoriya becomes one in chapter 30 by screwing All For One over with the wishes he made on the Dragon Balls. With some help with Dende and King Kai, he wishes for all the people All For One killed at Kamino City revived (this includes All Might) and the areas he destroyed to be restored, then he wishes for the Quirks All For One stole in this incident to be returned (Ragdoll has Search again), and finally for all the people there to be far away from Kamino City so it is just Izuku and All For One. With these actions, Hisashi is able to screw All For One without directly fighting him.
    • Especially as the first and third wishes are basically the same ones that played a role in the Goku vs Frieza fight the chapter's basically emulating (though the ones in Dragon Ball Z were on different dragons as Shenron was only capable of granting one wish at the time compared to Porunga's three; Shenron's superior revival power saw Earth's dragon take the resurrection wish as he can revive as many as needed with one wish whereas Porunga can only revive one at a time).
  • Split Personality: A heroic example. Inner Deku exists as a separate identity from the deepest parts of Midoriya's personality (his Saiyan side), who was born after his climactic battle against Noumu. He acts as a helpful guide throughout Midoriya's journey as a hero and can interact with the previous One for All users in the mindscape.
  • Stepford Smiler: Although hints were already apparent for Melissa Shield in canon, the fic dives more into this as Izuku uses Nana's Empathy Quirk for the first time in chapter 23.
He looked towards Melissa, and right before his eyes, he saw a vision. It was like a movie… it told the entire life of Melissa Shield. From beginning to end. She was a happy little girl, who had a talent for science. She was cheerful and optimistic. But when she learned that she will never be getting a Quirk… she cried. She cried very, very much… She cried so much that her tears stained her very psyche. Izuku felt everything she felt. Pain, sadness, sorrow, hate, anger, frustration, despair, hopelessness. Every emotion, everything that Melissa had ever felt,... He felt it all. He shared and understood those feelings.
She then decided to work hard. Work so hard that she went sleepless nights, working on projects and inventions. She decided that she would hide her sadness and pain with her cheerful and optimistic attitude. She would hide all of her pain and work hard to become the Hero that she wanted to be...and make her Papa proud…
  • Super-Empowering: Midoriya is capable of this by sharing his Ki with others, increasing their physical and quirk abilities for a duration but give them a permanent boost.
    • Uraraka is capable of Gravity Manipulation as she can control the movement of what her Quirk affects akin to Mind over Matter and achieve Flight, completely negates her nausea, and also perform the Kamehameha.
    • Yaoyorozu is able to create Hard Light without having to understand the chemical make-up she normally does when creating objects with her Quirk.
    • Hatsume is implied to be more creative than usual as she develops more ideas for support items.
    • Outside Midoriya and just like canon, All for One is capable of this by giving out quirks as well as stealing them. He gave his frail younger brother the quirk that became One for All.
  • Superior Successor: Becomes blatantly clear for Midoriya to become this as he continues to grow stronger throughout the story.
  • Superpower Lottery: On top of being the 9th user of One for All, which accumulated power through stock-piling for over a century (along with creating the current Hero society); Midoriya is also a descendant of a long line of Saiyan warriors; two of those ancestors includes Goku and Vegeta. Jeffman states, once he gained Pride For All, Izuku's Adaptive Ability exceeds that of the two mentioned Saiyans and BROLY, plus his potential is greater than SON GOHAN. note  This potential is shown in his mindscape and Izuku has 9 Stars of the previous users of One for All (he is the last star and the brightest one) and 9 Doors of the Super Saiyan (1, 2, 3, 4, God, Blue, Evolved Blue, and Omen -> Migatte no Gokui (Ultra Instinct)). As of Chapter 30, the first door has opened and he also unlocks the Blackwhip Quirk.
  • Troll:
    • Inner Deku can sometimes point out the obvious social cues to Midoriya whenever the latter is oblivious to these things.
    • Nana engages in this as well when Midoriya is freaking out about discovering the romantic emotions from Momo, Ochako, and Jirou through Nana's empathy Quirk.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Midoriya was running low on fumes after throwing everything he got at Noumu until he awakened the Faux Super Saiyan Mode. He then proceeds to wail on the Artificial Human in a demonic rage that scares the likes of the League of Villains and even the Noumu itself (considering being a practically animated vegetable), and never went down regardless of Noumu's retaliatory attacks nor being affected by Shigaraki's Touch of Death.
  • Uptown Girl: Played with for Izuku and Momo (although they're not together yet). On one hand, Momo comes from a very wealthy and influential family who's in love with Izuku, a boy who's of a lower-middle social class. On the other hand, Izuku eventually becomes the Big Man on Campus in U.A. High and achieve first place in the Sports Festival, gaining a lot of public fame. It's even zigzagged with the reveal of Izuku's Saiyan heritage including Vegeta in his bloodline, making Izuku a Blue Blood (however, this isn't really known to the public), and Momo is allowed by her father to be together with a boy who'll treat her right.
  • Wham Episode: Chapter 29 Three Words: All Might Dies.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The ending of Chapter 29 resembles that of Goku's Super Saiyan Ascension on Planet Namek. Izuku is Goku (the newly-transformed Super Saiyan), Gran Torino is Piccolo (he takes a hit from All For One and survives), Yaoyorozu is Gohan (ordered by the newly-transformed Super Saiyan to get outta the area), All For One is Frieza, and All Might is unfortunately Krillin.
  • World's Strongest Man: While All Might has already held the mantle, Hisashi is also this as well according to Endeavor. Midoriya is also shaping up to be this as the narration states at the end of Chapter 2, that he'll be the Greatest Hero Of All Time.
