Fanfic / A Lost Owl

Go To

In the middle of Luz's fight against Belos, she's pulled by an unknown force into the world of Amphibia, right in time for the reunion between Anne and Sasha. As Luz works to get back to the Boiling Isles, she finds herself dealing with situations that lead to her discovering she must help save both Amphibia and the Boiling Isles from impending doom.

A Lost Owl is a crossover fanfiction between The Owl House and Amphibia by Marzek note . It can be read on Archive of Our Own here. As of January 23 2023, the series can now be read here on Fanfiction Dot Net.

Like Amphibia, the story is set in three acts. Act 1 contains the first 20 chapters. Act 2 contains 22 Chapters, beginning with Chapter 21 and ending with Chapter 42. Act 3 begins with Chapter 43 and is currently ongoing.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: While sulking after her talk with Gwendolyn, Luz accidentally creates a glyph that absorbs light which leaves her room in total darkness.
  • Adaptational Badass: For some reason, despite being away from the Background Magic Field of the Demon Realm while in Amphibia, Luz can still use her glyphs. She initially thinks that it's because of Owlbert, but later evidence contradicts that theory.
  • Adaptational Explanation: As it turns out, Masha was sent to Reality Check Camp because their parents didn't take their coming out well, wanting them to "learn traditional gender roles" there.
  • Adaptational Karma:
    • Because of Belos using the Calamity cannon to blow up the Knee, Odalia is caught in the blast and is completely eradicated.
    • Kikimora and most of the loyalist Coven Heads are slaughtered by King Andrias when he begins to invade the Boiling Isles.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Hunter is put in this category as since Luz was in Amphibia, there was nobody to stop him from delivering the Palismen nest to Emperor Belos.
  • Adaptation Expansion: General Yunan's past, how she ascended the ranks of the Newtopian Army and defeated Ragnar the Wretched, are given in great detail.
  • Adaptation Name Change: As the chapter came out before the confirmation, Mary (the ram-horned girl in the Abomanation track) becomes known as Miranda.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Maddie becomes closer with everyone due to her friendship with Luz, contradicting how she's rarely seen with Anne, Sprig and Marcy in Amphibia after becoming friends with them.
    • In The Owl House, Skara never interacts with Luz and doesn't speak to Amity after she stops hanging out with Boscha and her gang. Here Skara's interactions with Willow and Gus after joining the Emerald Entrails allows her to get on friendlier terms with Luz and Amity.
    • Boscha is more hostile towards Luz and her friends because of Amity hanging out with Luz and Willow, Skara joining the flyer derby team, and Amelia cutting ties with her because she keeps picking on Willow.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Luz starts out as still being human but by the end of Act 1, she's now part Titan due to the Boiling Isles Titan enhancing her body.
  • Adapted Out: Due to Anne mistaking Andrias's puzzle-gram as an attack and launching the arrow back in the direction it came, pretty much all of "Scavenger Hunt" doesn't happen.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Willow begins to start calling Amity "Ami" after she returns to school.
  • An Arm and a Leg: In Chapter 32, Sasha loses one of her arms while dueling Anne, but it's soon reversed when Anne and Maddie heal it in the Source.
  • The Apprentice: Maddie becomes Valeriana's apprentice at the end of "Next".
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Maddie becomes a much more prominent character as she bonds with Luz over her use of magic and travels with her to Newtopia to find a way to travel between worlds.
    • Skara has a bigger role here than she does in the actual show, even becoming part of the Hexsquad.
  • Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence: It turns out that when the Titans die, their bodies are left behind but their spirits do this. A piece the Boiling Isles Titan's spirit resides in the Source, which was made from its blood and the minerals in the ground.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: To her disappointment, Anne discovers she's the youngest of her human friends after learning Luz is almost 15.
  • Batman Gambit: Two occur in Chapter 32:
    • General Yunan tries to prevent the war against the frogs and the toads by threatening to kill Braddock unless Grime surrenders. Though Grime complies, Yunan kills her anyway and it leads to Beatrix suggesting using her death to motivate his soldiers, which works.
    • Later, Marcy plays one of her own by forcing Anne and Sasha to fight alone until one of them dies or Ben or Grime calls off the duel. The moment Sasha loses an arm, Grime relents.
  • Berserk Button: Implied. If you know what's good for you, don't. Call. Polly. A baby!
  • Birthday Episode:
    • "Chapter 10: Gotcha" is set on King Andrias' birthday.
    • Played With in "Chapter 39: Gray", which is set on Luz's birthday. However, Luz is unaware of this since she lost track of time for Earth since Anne has her phone, and Vee (who's on Earth impersonating her) celebrates it with her friends from Reality Check Camp.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • Marcy has been taking a lot of emotional turmoil: she confesses to Anne that she intentionally got them and Sasha stranded in Amphibia after hearing that Anne nearly killed Sasha, her meeting with Sasha ends with Sasha accusing her and Anne of trying to forget about her and she becomes distraught upon learning General Yunan found the Source and tried to kill Luz on King Andrias' orders.
    • Luz, the Blight sisters and Alador are left in crippling sadness after Edric's death.
  • Break Them by Talking: Sasha uses this tactic on Luz in "Chapter 4: A Happy Happening", berating her for ruining her party and her reunion with her best friend and all while not knowing how she came to Amphibia to begin with, along with accusing Luz of scrounging off of Anne's hospitality. This causes Luz to run off in tears and ends up cementing her distrust of Sasha.
  • Breather Episode: Chapter 24, appropriately named "A Normal Day", focuses on Luz wanting to go one day with some normalcy as she returns to Hexside.
  • Bridal Carry:
    • In her overexcitement from General Yunan taking her to see Anne, Marcy falls off of Joe Sparrow in midair causing Anne to catch her in her arms. She holds Marcy this way for a few more seconds before putting her down.
    • After escaping from Darius, Willow carries Luz this way during the Emerald Entrails walk to the Owl House.
  • Call-Back: In Chapter 4, Luz calls for a high-five with Sprig, who uses his tounge which causes Luz to say "gross". This was Anne's reaction back in "Anne or Beast?".
    • In "Ghosts (Part 1)" Luz gets sick from eating ice cream cake. She revealed she was lactose-intolerant in "Enchanting Grom Fright". She later mentions facing Grometheus the Fear Bringer with Amity.
  • The Chessmaster: Belos proves to be this against Andrias and the Core in the Act 2 finale; knowing of their arrival and invasion ahead of time, he allows them to take all the witches of the Boiling Isles for experimentation in exchange for one of the Calamity Gems. To show he's not to be underestimated or bluffing, he effortlessly takes control of the Calamity Cannon and uses it to obliterate the Knee, forcing them to relent.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Luz fails to see that Marcy's flustered reaction to seeing Anne again is because Marcy has a crush on her, to which Maddie rolls her eyes.
  • Commonality Connection: Luz bonds with both Maddie and Marcy over the use of magic, and bonds more with the latter over their shared interest in the "Good Witch Azura" and "Cynthia Coven" books.
  • Crush Blush: Anne and Marcy have feelings for each other and often sport these as a result. And as always, Amity does this around Luz, who gets these after she asks Amity out.
  • Dark Horse Victory: Luz doesn't enter the Bonesborough Brawl but ends up winning the competition by blasting Warden Wrath with a spell that sends him across Bonesborough before he kills Amity in the finals.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • "Chapter 15: A Tower's Tale" shows Sasha and Grime negotiating with two frogs from the rebellion for better treatment from toads.
    • "Chapter 16: Meanwhile on the Boiling Isles" follows Amity in the days after the petrification ceremony, during which she has to cope with Luz's disappearance.
    • "Chapter 18: The Search" chronicles General Yunan's journey to find the Source in her Expedition Journal.
    • "Chapter 21: Kinda Home" is essentially the events of "Any Sport In A Storm" from most of Skara's perspective.
    • "Chapter 23: The Stories of Sandy Towers" goes back to Amphibia, centering on Marcy and General Yunan meeting with Sasha and Captain Grime to discuss the issues regarding the rebellion. Yunan also reveals her backstory in joining the Newtopian Army.
  • Dead Guy on Display: Like the other petrified witches, Belos displays Eda's body. However, he puts her in the middle of Bonesborough to establish his control over the Isles.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • As the story's opening statement reveals Eda, King and Lilith were all petrified because Luz wasn't there to save them.
    • Braddock ends up dying at General Yunan's claws in a rather impulsive attempt to prevent a war between the frogs and toads.
    • Edric and Odalia die when Belos uses the Calamity cannon to destroy the Knee.
    • Several coven heads perish when Andrias storms the Emperor's castle, with Kikimora being crushed under his boot as she begs for mercy.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Because of Vee impersonating Luz on Earth, Andrias is completely caught off guard when he sees Luz in the Demon Realm as he begins to invade the Isles.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Yunan forces Grime to call off the war or she'd kill Braddock, and does so anyway despite his surrendering. Beatrix tells Grime to use Braddock's death to motivate his soldiers so they'll fight harder in the war, and Yunan realizes too late that what she did was overkill.
  • Disney Death:
    • Sasha kills Hop Pop by stabbing him in the back. Thanks to the regeneration glyph Maddie created, his body is stabilized long enough for her and Luz to bring him to the Source and completely bring him back to life.
    • During the final round of the Bonesborough Brawl, Warden Wrath severely injures Amity enough to push her to the brink of death. Luz manages to save her using several regeneration glyphs.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: As Viney explains to Skara, she decided against joining Hexside's swimming club because her crush Emira Blight is taking it and seeing her in her swimsuit would cause Viney to drown from staring at her.
  • Due to the Dead:
    • Upon seeing Eda's petrified statue and the plaque warning people not to engage in wild magic, Luz changes the wording so it labels Eda as a beacon of hope. Several people write their own messages, including Gwendolyn.
    • After stealing King's petrified form, Willow, Gus and Amity turn it into a shrine hidden in a closed garden and give him Eda's last name in honor of her.
    • Gwendolyn and Dell are given custody of Lilith's statue, placing it in front of their home and having a small ceremony for her.
    • Sasha and Grime hold a funeral for Braddock, although it's also meant to motivate the toad soldiers into taking the war seriously.
  • Everyone Can See It: It seems Willow believed that Amity's feelings to Luz were obvious to everyone but the girl herself and Gus. While this is true for the Blight twins, Skara admits she never even noticed when Willow tells her.
  • Eye Scream: Taking a direct punch from an angry Anne after unlocking her Calamity powers renders Sasha blind in one eye. This gets negated in "Chapter 32: Their Last Fight" when using the regeneration glyph charged with Anne's Calamity power within the Source restores Sasha's eye in addition to healing her severed arm.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Willow had to point out that Amity has a crush on Luz to Gus, despite Amity practically blurting it out to him.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: Chapter 18 is told entirely using Yunan's Expedition Journal, with her logging her experiences while searching for The Source.
  • Glamour: So Luz can return to Hexside without being arrested, Gus creates an illusion of an abomination track demon student over her so she can walk around in public. Building on this, Principal Bump gives her a concealment stone with the same appearance embedded in a bracelet.
  • The Glomp: The moment they see Luz has recovered, Willow and Gus pull her into a group hug. Edric and Emira do the same when they see she's back on the Isles.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Principal Bump's family are skilled jewelers and he retained the skills despite not taking over his family's business.
    • In Chapter 33, Skara joins the rebellion not just out of boredom, but because she's sick of her ostentatious lifestyle provided by her parents who are never around, making her want to do something for those less fortunate than her. The next chapter shows that she knows how to play nine different instruments and tries to learn a new one each year.
  • History Repeats: Just like on her first day in the Boiling Isles, Luz ends up breaking Katya out of the Conformatorium as she, Amity, and Boscha's mother Alsa try to rescue all the captured members of the resistance, which leads to them freeing the Bards Against the Throne in the process.
  • If Only You Knew:
    • Chapter 28 has Luz briefly theorize that Belos was once human and lived for hundreds of years. She brushes it off, but we know she's not wrong.
    • In Chapter 33, Gwendolyn and Skara scoff at the idea that the Golden Guard is a magicless witch because of how suspicious it would be for someone like that to be Belos' right-hand man.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Thanks to Maddie, Luz still discovers glyph combos and unlocks the ones for invisibility, steam and petrification.
    • Despite Luz's disappearance, Amity manages to stand up to her parents when they try getting Willow and Gus expelled.
    • By the time Luz returns to the Boiling Isles in Act 2, Willow has started up her flyer derby team and she, Gus and Viney have acquired their palisman and witch's staffs from Palisman Adoption Day. Somehow, Hunter has managed to bond with Flapjack and infiltrated the school as Caleb; He attempts to free the Entrails from Darius, who's impressed with him for finally making connections with kids his age.
      • The next chapter reveals that Amity's dyed her hair lavender and Emperor Belos has announced the Day of Unity.
    • Amity decides to compete in the Bonesborough Brawl and invites Luz to come with her. Not long after, Luz realizes her feelings for Amity and turns it into a date.
    • Amity, Willow and Gus decided to name King as an honorary Clawthorne since Eda raised him.
    • Luz eventually meets Gwendolyn and informs her of Lilith cursing Eda.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Thanks to Ivora "Iva" Odal, Maddie's friend/contact in Newtopia, Luz and Maddie learn that Marcy's in the capital in Chapter 9.
    • Chapter 10 has King Andrias learn about Luz's presence when he sees her at his birthday parade.
    • The next chapter has Luz and Maddie meet Marcy and inform her about her meeting Anne and Sasha along with their whereabouts and the following one has Luz reveal to Marcy her time on the Boiling Isles.
    • Chapter 13 has Anne and the Plantars meet Iva, when they reunite with Luz and Marcy.
    • "Chapter 14: Painful Truths" has Anne tell Marcy about her fallout with Sasha which was born from Sasha murdering Hop Pop and Anne using her powers to nearly kill Sasha while Marcy confesses to using the Calamity Box to send the girls to Amphibia.
    • "Chapter 18: The Search" details General Yunan meeting Valeriana and Iva's father Andrew while searching for the Source.
    • In "Chapter 19: Ghosts (Part 1)", Luz reveals she learned about Amphibia being more technologically advanced in the past and shares that knowledge with Anne, Sprig, Polly and Marcy.
    • In "Chapter 22: Too Late", Willow, Gus, Amity and Skara realize that Luz did go to save Eda only to disappear. Willow tells Skara about Amity's crush on Luz, and Luz tells them everything about her time in Amphibia. While going to see Eda, Luz and Amity exchange stories about Amity befriending Hooty, Luz reclaiming Owlbert from the Bat Queen, who enacted Palisman Adoption Day with Principal Bump and Belos announcing the Day of Unity and revealing his face to the Isles.
    • In "Chapter 25: The First of Many?", Amity realizes Emira is dating Viney, causing Edric to learn it for himself. She proceeds to tell the twins about everything involving Luz's return.
    • "Chapter 26: Things Change (Part 1)" has Anne, Sprig and Marcy visit the Source, the latter and Maddie meet Valeriana who shows them why its magic has been drained and the events leading up to how Luz got sent back to the Demon Realm.
    • "Chapter 27: Things Change (Part 2)" has Marcy inform Anne of her meeting with Sasha.
    • In "Chapter 28: Catching Up", Luz informs Morton that she's back on the Isles and tells Gwendolyn everything about her being tasked and modified by the Titan to defeat Belos..
    • Subverted in "Chapter 41: Revealing Secrets" when Luz learns that everyone at Hexside knew she was back, but played straight for laughs when Cat says she didn't know.
  • Invisibility with Drawbacks: The invisibility glyph continues to be this. While experimenting to overcome the breathing problem, Luz and Maddie create a version that only works so long as the person using it keeps their eyes closed.
  • Jumped at the Call: After Luz admits she joined the rebellion, Amity immediately decides to join as well, proving how serious she is about being by Luz's side for whatever she faces. A bit later, Skara eagerly does the same because she wants do do some good for those she's more fortunate than.
  • Kick the Dog: To further strengthen his policy against wild witches, Emperor Belos has Eda's petrified body placed in the center of Bonesborough as a warning not to defy him.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia:
    • For a brief period, Sasha can't remember what happened when she fought Anne, who nearly killed her for killing Hop Pop. She does eventually remember.
    • When Luz explains her adventure in Amphibia to her friends in the Demon Realm, it's revealed that she doesn't remember being possessed by the wolf spirit and speaking with the Titan's spirit. This is quickly subverted after she's told she has two hearts now. However, she hasn't remembered them telling her about the other 2 humans before her who came to the Demon Realm yet.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • For killing Hop Pop, Sasha is rendered blind in one eye by Anne.
    • One downplayed case: Boscha worms her way into Amity's "Applied Defenses" class to tank her grades by curb-stomping her in a duel with over-powered potions. Professor Hermonculous sees right through her plan and has her suspended for the rest of the school day.
    • Upon learning Willow's got a thing for Skara, Amity considers telling Skara as payback for Willow announcing her crush on Luz to the bard.
    • For selling out her classmates to the Emperor's Coven and getting Cat (who by that point was her Only Friend left) injured in the process, Boscha is expelled from Hexside.
  • Lampshade Hanging: All 3 Calamity girls question at different points how Chuck can see if his hat obscures his eyes.
  • The Leader: A frog named Ben Flawrik serves as acting leader of the frog rebellion with Chuck as his aide, but he's trying to get Anne to take the position. She eventually takes the position in Chapter 29.
  • Locked Out of the Loop:
    • No one in the Demon Realm knew what happened to Luz, which makes all her friends believe Belos somehow tricked her into going back to the Human Realm until she returns. Her return to the Demon Realm means that her friends in Amphibia are now left wondering what happened to her (at least until Valeriana informs them). Not to mention her mother has no idea the girl currently living with her is a shapeshifting demon impersonating her.
    • Anne is unaware that a shapeshifting demon is living Luz's life, so she feels that she's acting like she doesn't know her.
  • Long-Lived: The Titans can live up to 50 million years. In modifying Luz's body, the Titan that makes the Boiling Isles increases her lifespan to 15 thousand.
  • Love Confession: Anne tells Marcy how she feels about her after seeing her so upset in Chapter 27, cheering her up by apologizing for not being a good friend and reminding her of her better qualities.
  • Love Epiphany: Implied for Marcy as she admits she missed Anne more than she realized in the time they've been seperated.
  • Meanwhile Scene: Chapter 16 is essentially an entire chapter dedicated to this, as it switches to the Boiling Isles to show how Luz's friends are coping with her being gone.
  • Multi-Part Episode:
    • Chapters 19 and 20: Ghosts.
    • Chapters 26 and 27: Things Change.
    • Chapters 33 and 34: Mittensday.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • Two occur in "Chapter 28: Catching Up". The first to occur is from Gwendolyn, who accuses Luz of stealing Owlbert and squatting in the Owl House only to see how much Luz misses Eda and how close Owlbert is with her. At the same time, Emira lays into Amity for nearly getting herself killed at the Brawl and when she goes to see Luz, Amity realizes she's caused Luz to doubt her feelings by ignoring her warnings and apologizes for not backing out.
    • In Chapter 41, Boscha put the remaining students in danger by helping Graye locate them. She initially doesn't care until Amity points out Cat got seriously hurt when they broke down the door to the Healing homeroom. The moment she sees Cat's unconscious form with a broken arm bending the wrong way, Boscha's overcome with guilt and collapses to her knees begging Cat to wake up.
  • Mythology Gag: The story has references to MoringMark, like most other Owl House fics;
  • Named by the Adaptation: The pufferfish student from the abomination track is known as Eric.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The Titan asks Luz to save its only remaining descendant after controlling her magic, who as we know from "Edge of the World" is King. It was because of the Titan sending Luz away from the Demon Realm that King wound up being petrified.
  • Noodle Incident: Two weeks before Luz came back to the Demon Realm, Amity had found the basement to the Owl House. Hooty, having gone through his phase of trying to help people, kidnapped Emira and trapped her there.
  • Oblivious to Love: Not only is Luz completely unaware of Amity's crush on her, she also can't see that Marcy has a crush on Anne (although she did figure out it was mutual and considered them to be oblivious to how much they adore each other). It wasn't until she thought about it more after Amity invites her to the Bonesborough Brawl that she figures out the truth and realized her own feelings.
  • Odd Friendship: With Lilith KIA, it's Amity who develops one with Hooty, visiting him once a week to keep him company due to Eda and King's deaths.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Willow and Amity suspect something happened to Luz after the Clawthornes are petrified and she doesn't show up to save them.
    • Luz and Amity swearing is enough to raise some concern.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Luz's arrival and her glyph magic are completely unexpected by literally everyone In-Universe, even throwing off Andrias and the Core.
  • Pajama-Clad Hero: "Ghosts" (Parts 1 & 2), the take on "The Sleepover to End All Sleepovers", still has Anne, Sprig and Marcy wearing the same pajamas as canon. The Plantars buy Luz a set for the sleepover (a light gray plain shirt and purple pajama pants) and she gets sent back to the Boiling Isles in said clothes, which is continuously brought up by her friends afterwards.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • After Amity ends up at the Owl House and brings Hooty up to speed on everything, he goes to Hexside to tell Willow where Amity is. And since she ran off, Gus conjures up an illusion clone to attend her classes so she doesn't get in trouble with her parents. Afterwards, Amity begins dropping by once a week to give Hooty company.
    • Following a conversation with Sasha that ends on a sour note, General Yunan takes Marcy to see Anne as she, the Plantars and Maddie as they're returning to Wartwood to cheer her up.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Happens back-to-back in Chapters 38 and 39, as Sasha stops speaking to Anne after getting back to Earth because she's angry that Grime turned himself in to protect her. At the same time, Anne believes she's had one with Luz who she thinks is pretending not to know her so she can forget about the Boiling Isles, when in reality it's someone else entirely.
  • Point of Divergence: Luz's unexpected arrival completely derails Sasha and Grime's plot for Hop Pop, and even leads to Anne unlocking her Calamity Powers a full season earlier than in canon due to Sasha's murder attempt at Hop Pop.
    • With Luz and Maddie's help, Marcy drives out the barbari-ants a day before Anne and the Plantars arrive in Newtopia.
    • Once Anne ends up telling Marcy all about this when they reunite due to feeling more resentful to Sasha, Marcy ends up confessing to Anne earlier than in canon and on her own terms out of guilt her involvement in intentionally sending her and Sasha to Amphibia due to fearing separation when faced with moving. Her doing so leads to a much better reaction from Anne, with her saying that while it might take some time for her to forgive her, she could never hate Marcy and makes it clear to her how important she is to her.
    • As Luz had vanished from the Boiling Isles without a trace, Eda, King and Lilith lost their lives to petrification, while Amity ends up becoming depressed, befriends Hooty and confesses her crush on Luz to Willow. When her parents try to get Willow and Gus expelled, Amity immediately gets Odalia to take it back by threatening to sic Hooty on every abomination she owns and proves it.
    • Luz has been made part-Titan much sooner than in canon.
    • Hunter's attempt to forcibly recruit the Emerald Entrails into the Emperor's Coven is hindered by Luz's sudden reappearance. His bringing up her bounty is what causes him to confess who he is and when he confronts Darius to free everyone, Luz sends out a strong shockwave that knocks Hunter and Darius off the airship (which gets destroyed) and the kids land in the forest.
    • Amity got grounded before "Clouds on the Horizon" for standing up to Odalia and by the time it ends, it's the day before the Bonesborough Brawl. After inviting Luz to the event, Luz figures out Amity has a crush on her and asks her out.
      • The Emperor's Coven tryouts aren't mentioned so Alador doesn't assign an abomaton to watch Amity, allowing her to participate in the Brawl and face Warden Wrath in the final round. Luz doesn't compete but when Wrath nearly kills Amity, she blasts him across town so the referee declares her the winner.
    • Luz's deceased father wasn't brought up during the Bonesborough Brawl. And since Luz was unable to try and contact her mother, Vee has been able to continue living on Earth as Luz with Camila none the wiser about her daughter's true whereabouts.
    • Because of Luz's disappearance, Hunter was successful at delivering the palismen to Belos.
    • Losing both of her daughters has led Gwendolyn to join the rebellion against Belos.
    • Marcy is among those that learned that Hop Pop buried the Calamity Box and Anne comes back on her own accord, but doesn't let Hop Pop explain himself.
    • As the author points out in the comments of chapter 33, Luz's sudden reappearance right after Willow's flyer derby match leads to Hunter being willing to imprison her and turn her in. This in turn ends up straining Willow's opinion of him and torpedoing any chance at Hunter/Willow being a canon ship in the fic, with Willow being romantically paired with Skara instead.
    • Since Lilith was petrified and thus, didn't travel back in time with Luz and break Philip's nose, Belos no longer has the rotting band of wood that makes up the scar on his face. Plus, he found the light glyph and the Collector's mirror on his own, so there's no Stable Time Loop and Luz is pretty much expendable now.
    • Anne's issues with Hop Pop are omitted from the trip to the first temple.
    • During Anne's fight with Valeriana, the latter leaves out her day out with Polly and snoring in favor of bringing up her nearly killing Sasha. Additionally, nothing keeps Anne from fully charging the second Calamity Gem, so she loses her powers completely.
    • Due to Sasha and Grime being fugitives among Frog Valley, Sasha doesn't end up participating in the Battle of the Bands with Anne and Marcy with the two performing "No Big Deal" without her.
    • Unable to put together the Toad rebellion, Grime turns himself in to Newtopian authorities so Sasha won't be punished; the news causes her to re-declare her hatred for the Plantars and run through a portal to Earth Andrias opens, forcing Anne to follow her. The Plantars leave Newtopia Castle after saying goodbye to Anne, and Andrias betrays Marcy soon after letting the Core possess her.
    • Marcy is unable to give Anne her journal, so it ends up in Darcy's clutches and they learn about Luz coming from the Boiling Isles as a result.
    • Vee finds out that Masha knew the truth about her from their first day at reality check camp.
    • Luz takes part in the events of "Labyrinth Runners", during which Boscha becomes the only Hexside student to be branded by Adrian (and willingly) and her actions lead to Cat being severely injured.
    • Andrias and the Core invade the Boiling Isles before they invade Earth; as Belos knew of this beforehand, he abandons the Day of Unity and allows the warlords to capture the witches of the Isles to use as lab rats for learning how their magic works.
  • Police Are Useless: Chapter 39 shows that when the Calamity Trio went missing, the police had No Sympathy, casually telling the Boonchuys that their daughter ran away and that they were better off planning her funeral.
  • The Prophecy: In Chapter 33, Celine gives one to Amity from Alador's grandmother Bludoria, who claims that Amity will suffer tragedy when "someone her heart longs for and someone it repels will be lost" and she won't be able to save either of them. Amity starts to become paranoid that this means Luz will die, but Luz tells her it's never going to happen.
  • Properly Paranoid: Neither Luz nor Sprig trusted Sasha when they first meet her. Along with Sprig's paranoia about the party at Toad Tower from canon, Luz immediately senses that Sasha is like every other bully she dealt with back home. This leads to the two keeping an eye on Sasha when she comes to Wartwood to kill Hop Pop.
    • After seeing the way King Andrias looked at her for the first time, Luz becomes convinced that she shouldn't trust him because he reminds her of Belos. This ends up being for good reason, as Andrias and the Core see her as a potential threat after learning she's been to the Source.
    • While heading to the Source to find Luz, Anne can't help feeling that someone's following the group which Sprig brushes off. It later turns out to be Valeriana following them, and Anne takes the time to briefly gloat about being right.
  • A Rare Sentence: After a month away from the Boiling Isles Luz admits she'll be glad to see everyone at Hexside again, admitting she even missed Boscha.
    Amity: (incredulously) No way...
Luz: Oh yeah, it's true. Even though I think I'll regret that sentence when I actually meet her later.
  • Relationship Upgrade:
    • Subverted in "The First of Many?": Amity asks Luz if she wants to be girlfriends before passing out from exhaustion, but Luz finds she can't give an answer. It's double subverted in the first segment of Chapter 29, with Luz finally saying yes to Amity's question.
    • Anne and Marcy get together in "Things Change: Part 2" when Anne confesses to Marcy that she never wants to risk losing her again.
  • Retcon: Originally Marcy was stated to be the youngest member of the Calamity Trio in "Ghost: Part 1" but with the early spoilers for Marcy's Journal revealing she's the oldest member, it was changed to Anne.
  • The Reveal:
    • "Chapter 2: Adaptation" shows that Hop Pop has some knowledge, or at the very least, is aware of the existence of the Boiling Isles.
    • Luz reveals to Anne and the Plantars in "Chapter 13: Reunion - Second Try" that there's another Calamity Box in the basement of the Owl House. And like Anne's, the gems in the second box are currently gray.
    • "Chapter 20: Ghosts [Part 2]" drops a lot of important information; namely, it was the spirit of the Titan that sent Luz to Amphibia. Having Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence, it brought her there because it saw her life was in danger and needed to tell her about how both King Andrias and the human parasite who abused its power will destroy all worlds. In addition, the Source turns out to be the cave of crystals Luz and Maddie revived Hop Pop in; its importance to King Andrias and the Core is because it was made from Titan's Blood, which leaked into other worlds and the Calamity Gems came from the Source. And lastly, the person who attacked General Yunan and made her forget its location was Luz possessed by the Titan's animal companion.
    • "Catching Up" shows that Luz can now repel magic herself without her witch's wool cape, Gwendolyn is part of the resistance that Lilith's statue has been placed in front of her parents' home. It's also mentioned that the Golden Guard succeeded in capturing the Bat Queen's palismen and bringing them to the Emperor to consume.
    • "Next" shows that Valeriana is in possession of the fourth Calamity Gem.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: The Collector has this, as they are surprised to see Belos without his scar.
  • Secret Relationship:
    • Viney and Emira have been dating in secret, and Emira's done such a good job of hiding it not even Edric knows who she's going out with.
    • After getting together, Anne and Marcy agree to wait a bit before telling the Plantars they're now dating.
  • Security Cling: Willow pulls the at-the-time catatonic Luz into her arms when the Emerald Entrails are taken aboard Darius' airship, and holds her even tighter when the ship goes down.
  • Ship Tease:
    • It becomes clear that Anne and Marcy have feelings for each other; they both missed one another after being apart for so long with Anne refusing to hate Marcy for intentionally stranding them in Amphibia, and Marcy calling Anne the most important person in her life.
    • Willow and Skara are implied to be developing feelings for each other.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Side Bet: Edric and Emira had been betting on whether Amity would be able to ask Luz out or the other way around. Emira wins 40 snails since Luz asked Amity out and Amity is not pleased to learn they've been holding it since the "library incident", much less so when it's implied that Willow took part in it.
  • Spanner in the Works: Luz's unexpected arrival completely derails Sasha and Grime's plot for Hop Pop, and even leads to Anne unlocking her Calamity Powers a full season earlier than in canon.
  • There Is Another: According to the Titan's spirit, there is a fourth Calamity Gem and a warrior linked to it somewhere in Amphibia. It instructs Luz to find them when she returns after honing her newly acquired magical abilities.
  • There Is Only One Bed:
    • While they are under house arrest at Newtopia Castle, Maddie manages to convince Luz to share a bed with her because Maddie doesn't need much space. Previously, they shared a room at Iva's, but slept on separate mattresses.
    • Chapter 17 opens on Anne waking up and getting flustered after spending the night sleeping in Marcy's bed at the castle.
  • Twirl of Love: Right after Luz asks her out and she says yes, Amity pulls her into a hug and they spin around for a bit.
  • Twitchy Eye: Viney's right eye has an uncontrollable one when she meets Hooty for the first time.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: Act 2 of the story shifts between the Boiling Isles and Amphibia.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Since Anne is unaware Vee has replaced Luz on Earth, the basilisk is terrified when Anne calls and mentions Belos, warning her to never speak to her again. With all that Anne suffered through on her first two days back, this convinces her that 'Luz' is trying to forget about her, robbing her of any hope that she could get back to Amphibia and still had friends who could help her. This also puts Anne at great risk of committing Self-Harm.
  • Vignette Episode: Some chapters are titled "Short Stories" and feature three such tales;
    • Chapter 8: "Large Spaces", which shows Luz and Maddie exploring the abandoned factories, "Lessons" has Maddie give Luz a crash course on the glyph combos she found, and "Losses" shows Sasha in the middle of her recovery.
    • "Chapter 29: The Titan, the Couple and the Toad" each revolve around Luz and the Calamity Trio attempting to figure out how figure out how they can all control their respective magic powers.
  • Wham Episode:
    • The third segment of Chapter 8 reveals Sasha is suffering from amnesia after her last confrontation with Anne. Grime then gives her the portal key, which Luz dropped when she arrived in Amphibia.
    • "Ghosts: Part 2" has the Titan enhance Luz's body so she can act as its helper to save both worlds, allowing her the option to undo the changes afterwards. Said changes will give her magic but destroy the Source and thus, the part of the Titan's soul in Amphibia. It then sends her back to the Demon Realm instructing her to master her abilities so she can travel between worlds and once she returns to Amphibia, she must find the fourth Calamity warrior then Valeriana and destroy the gems and the temples.
    • Chapter 29 has Luz figuring out how to use her magic by summoning glyphs and agreeing to be Amity's girlfriend, Anne and Marcy sharing their First Kiss and unlocking their Calamity powers with Anne officially becoming the leader of the frog rebellion, and Sasha being revealed to have unlocked her own powers and making plans with Grime to show up Beatrix at the upcoming negotiations with the rebellion. On lesser notes, Skara has ended her friendship with Boscha, Luz finds she can't contact Lilith in the spirit world, and Polly learns about Anne and Marcy's Secret Relationship to which Anne remarks that she'll tell everyone about them.
    • Chapter 40 has a bunch for a Vignette Episode: Sasha has returned to her father's estate, Marcy has been possessed by the Core, the Plantars return to Wartwood where Sprig figures out Andrias has malicious intentions while Hop Pop is left confused about what to do, Darcy plans on scoping out the Boiling Isles before invading Earth due to learning where Luz originated from before coming to Amphibia, and Vee discovers that Masha (who comes out to them), knows she's not Luz and agrees to keep her secret.
  • You Remind Me of X:
    • Somewhat parodied. Seeing the guest room Iva provides for her and Maddie, Luz tears up and tells the frog that it looks exactly like Amity's secret study in Bonesborough Library.
    • Later played straight when Marcy confesses to Luz that she reminds her a bit of Anne, in that they both always put their friends' well-beings first when they need it.
