Drinking Game / Sonic the Hedgehog

The fastest drinking game alive! Please note that TV Tropes does not condone running at speeds comparable to motorsports vehicles while under the influence of alcohol.
General
  • Take a drink every time you find an underwater section in an unlikely area (such as in a carnival).
    • Down a bottle if that water section takes up a majority of the level.
  • Take a drink every time you get killed by a squish trap.
    • Take another if it was pulling apart when it squished you.
  • Take a drink every time you run full speed into an enemy or other hazard.
  • Start drinking every time you trigger the drowning music, and only stop if you recover your air. Finish the glass if you drown.
  • Take a drink every time Tails activates a trap, messes up your timing on a boss or a see-saw, or otherwise screws you over.
    • Take another drink if he defeats a badnik or lands a killing blow on a boss.
  • Take a drink every time you hit a bumper.
  • If the game features the Chaos Emeralds as collectables obtainable from bonus stages rather than Plot Coupons, take a celebratory drink every time you get all seven Emeralds.
  • In debug modes...
    • Take a drink every time you crash the game.
    • Take a drink every time you encounter an unused sprite.
    • Take a drink every time you encounter a placeholder sprite for a normally-invisible object (e.g. the Tails portraits in Sonic 2, the "GTGT" sprites in Sonic 3).
  • Take a drink every time you end up in a slot machine and get enough Robotnik/Eggman icons to lose rings. Take a second one if your ring count drops to 0 as a result.
  • In games with the 10-minute time limit, start chugging at 9 minutes and 49 seconds. Finish your drink if you hit Time Over.
  • Take a drink for every time you die to That One Boss.
    • If Biolizard, take another drink if you died via water flow.
  • In games where getting hit makes you lose all of your rings, down a whole glass for every 100 Rings you had on you.
  • Take a shot each time Robotnik/Eggman does one of his infamous repetitive quotes:
    • Sonic Adventure: "Get a load of this!" or "No way! I can't believe this!"
      • If he says either of these during a cutscene, take 2.
    • Sonic Heroes: "Take this!"
    • Shadow the Hedgehog: "You know what they say - the more the merrier!"
    • Sonic Unleashed: "You little...you little!"
    • Sonic Generations: "Time for a change of pace!"
  • Take a shot if you hear the phrase "Long time no see" while playing a marathon of the Adventure games, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
  • Take a shot every time you die to a boss whose arena has no rings, respawn at a checkpoint, and are unable to collect any rings before the boss (such as in Mystic Cave Zone Act 2).
  • Toast every time you beat an Act in less than 30 seconds for the 50,000-point bonus.
  • Are you playing Sonic and the Secret Rings? If so, just start chugging when Seven Rings in Hand starts playing, and don't stop until it does. May you rest in peace.
  • Take a drink every time you hear/see something unintentionally silly.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • In Casino Night Zone, take a drink if you lose Rings from getting Robotniks at the slot machines.
    • Take two if you get two jackpot reels and one Robotnik.
  • Take a drink every time you fall into the Mystic Cave Zone Act 2 spike pit. If you're Super Sonic, drink while you wait to die.
    • If this is one of the smartphone ports, take a celebratory drink of champagne as you enter Hidden Palace Zone.
  • Take a drink every time one of the Metropolis Zone badniks get you.
  • Don't take any drinks in the Death Egg Zone. You'll need your sobriety to defeat The Death Egg Robot.
  • Take a drink every time you get NOT ENOUGH RINGS... in a Special Stage. Take two if it was because Tails screwed you over by getting in front of you and then running into too many bombs.
    • Finish the bottle if you had 0 rings.
    • Take a drink every time you die within 10 seconds of exiting the Special Stage due to your lack of rings.
  • In 2-player mode...
    • Take a drink every time you hit a teleport item monitor. ("Teleport only" mode doesn't count.)
    • Take a drink every time you hit a Robotnik monitor.
    • Take a drink every time your opponent beats you to the goal post and you run out of time trying to finish too.
  • If you're playing as Knuckles, take a drink when you get to the Metropolis Zone Act 3 boss, because you'll need it.
  • Finish your drink if you spindash off of the Tornado in Sky Chase Zone.
  • If you are playing the prototype version:
    • Take a drink every time you go to an incomplete level.
      • Take another drink once you get to a point where you can't progress any further.
    • Take two drinks every time you pick a level and you just fall into a void of nothing to your death.
      • If it was Death Egg Zone and you now have no sound, finish your drink.
    • If you are playing the game normally, take a sip every time you see something that's different from the final version.

Sonic the Hedgehog CD
  • Take a drink every time you time travel when you don't want to. Take a second to calm your nerves if you end up in a Bad Future as a result.
    • Take a drink every time you do want to time travel, but your time travel flag is removed because you didn't sustain time travel speed long enough.
  • Take a celebratory drink every time you get a Good Future.
  • Take a drink if you lose to Metal Sonic.
    • Take another if he does so by reaching the safe vault before you and does his finger wag pose
      • Take another if you get killed by Robotnik's laser before the race finishes.
      • Take yet another one if you had rings.
  • If you allow the "I'm outta here!" Non-Standard Game Over to happen, drink until you pass out.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles
  • Every time Knuckles sets a trap for Sonic and Tails, take a drink.
  • Take a drink every time Sonic encounters a "keep moving or get crushed" section.
  • Take a drink every time you fight a boss that destroys itself.
  • If you are playing S3 only, take a swig if you see an area you can't get to because you aren't Knuckles.
  • Take a drink every time you are playing S3 alone and hear Michael Jackson-inspired music.
  • Take a swig if you get close to a Time Over on Carnival Night Zone Act 2.
    • Take 2 if you do get a Time Over.
    • Down the whole bottle if that is your last life, and you just got a game over.
    • Down another bottle if it was because you got stuck on "The Barrel Of Doom"
  • In Sandopolis Zone Act 2:
  • In the non-Emerald bonus stages...
    • Take a drink for every 100 extra rings you exit with.
    • Take a drink every time you lose rings from getting three Robotniks in the slot machine stage.
  • Take a drink every time you lose a Fire Shield or Lightning Shield to water.
    • If it was a Lightning shield, take a sip for every Badnik you destroy from the resulting Smart Bomb.
    • Down the bottle if you don't kill any Badniks that way.
  • Toast if you get to the Doomsday Zone, and again if you beat it.

Sonic Spinball
  • Take a drink every time you fall into an outlane. Take another if you don't get rescued by life-saving devices.
  • Take a drink every time the game tells you to BUST SOMETHING FIRST!
  • Take a drink every time you fall out of a boss area.
  • Take a drink for every 10 minutes you spend in a stage.
  • Take a drink every time you get a CLUCK ALERT!
  • Take a drink for every WORM BAGGED.
  • In the bonus stages, take a drink every time you get a TILT.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4
  • Take a drink every time you hit a speed booster.
  • Take a drink every time you encounter a Bubbles chain.
  • Take a drink every time you fail the 7th Special Zone in either episode.

Sonic Adventure
  • Take two shots if the Egg Viper destroys the only platform you have left. Finish your drink if this happened upon its defeat.
  • Take a sip if you cast a line as Big and a fish catches your hook.
    • Take two if it's not Froggy, except for the B and A rank missions.
    • Take a shot if you fail to catch the fish.
    • Finish your drink if you don't set the lure properly before reeling in Froggy and let him slip by.
  • Take a shot every time Sonic comments on your performance as Tails. Two for Robotnik.
  • Take a sip for every combination you get in Casinopolis' Sonic Pinball board. Make that a drink for 3 Robotniks.
  • Take a shot for every bizarre facial animation.
  • Take a shot every time you collect an animal.
    • Two for if you give that animal to a Chao.
  • Hold a grand beer party upon collecting the 130th Emblem on the GCN versions onward.
    • Finish the drink in sorrow if you do so with the Dreamcast version, for there is no reward.

Sonic Adventure 2
  • General:
    • Have a pity drink for any E rank you get.
      • Drink again if you were 500 points or less away from a better rank.
    • Hold a grand beer party upon collecting the 180th Emblem, preferably while you're running around Green Hill Zone.
  • Action Stages:
    • As mentioned above, drink whenever you die against the Biolizard via water flow.
  • Shooting Stages:
    • Drink whenever Tails says "My power is failing!".
    • Take a sip for every combo of 7 or more targets. Don't drink anything if it's in Cosmic Wall.
    • Just start chugging when the second Tails vs. Eggman battle begins and don't stop until it's over.
  • Treasure Hunting:
    • Take a shot for every two minutes that pass without you finding anything. Make it a sip if it's on Mad Space.
    • Drink whenever a hint monitor leads you on the wrong path.
Shadow the Hedgehog
  • Take a shot every time someone swears.
  • Every time you complete a Hero mission, take a drink of fruit juice or soda. Drink your hardest liquor if you do a Dark mission. Neutral is anything with alcohol.
  • Take a drink every time you get in a vehicle slower than Shadow.
  • Finish your drink if you do something that makes your current buddy upset.
  • Lost Impact, might as well break out the booze and just chug through it.
  • Take a sip of water every time you use Chaos Control. Do it with whiskey for Chaos Blast. To encourage usage of these, chug for when you just hold the power state for invincibility and infinite ammo.
  • Your buddy takes a shot for any of the above if they're playing as your ally. Two if they do something that makes their character complain.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) (oh god)
  • Take a small sip each time you encounter a loading screen.
    • Take a slightly longer one if you're presented with a single line of dialogue afterwards, then get put into another loading screen.
  • For that matter, just drink to the point of intoxication right away; you'll need it to tolerate the game, especially the loading screens and loads of bugs.
  • When Sonic and Elise kiss, start chugging and don't stop until it ends. No, this isn't part of the drinking game, it's just good advice. Alternatively, if you actually like the scene, take shot.
  • Take a drink any time you say the game sucks.
  • Take a drink every single time Silver says "TAKE THIS!", "IT'S NO USE!", or "THIS'LL END IT!"
    • Although at this point, you'd probably be dead of alcohol poisoning.
  • Take a small sip for every glitch you encounter.
    • If said glitch is a collision glitch that leave your character stuck to something or in an awkward position, take a drink.
    • If said glitch results in an unavoidable death, finish your drink.
  • Take a sip whenever you talk to someone and they greet you with "Hey."
  • Take a drink whenever Princess Elise gets kidnapped.

Sonic Unleashed
  • Take a drink every time you fail a Quick Time Event.
    • But only take small sips if it's during one of the "Flying" sections.
  • If you get an E grade, finish your drink and attempt a rendition of the "stage cleared" theme.
  • In the HD versions' Eggmanland, take a drink for every 10 minutes that pass on the in-game clcok.

Sonic Colors
  • Take a "small" sip (we don't want you dead be sensible) every time the announcer says a Color Power.
  • Take a drink every time you encounter a Quick Time / Button Mashing segment.
  • Take a drink every time your Drill power runs out while you're undergronud.
  • Take a drink every time you hear one of Eggman's PAs.
  • Take a drink every time Sonic cracks a Pre Ass Kicking One Liner.
  • Take a drink every time you get a TIME'S UP.
  • Take a drink every time the Bucket O' Sushi restaurant is mentioned.
  • In Starlight Carnival, take a drink every time you encounter a section where Sonic runs and no input is required from the player.
  • Take a celebratory drink for the Final Color Blaster against The Nega-Wisp Armor

Sonic Generations
  • Take a drink every time visiting a level induces a wave of nostalgia.
  • In City Escape: Act 2, take a drink every time the Mad Convoy gets a new upgrade.
  • Take a drink every time someone says "It looks like a homing shot!" during the Final Boss. Take two if it's Shadow saying "That's a homing shot!"
  • Take a drink every time the Time Eater jumps away from your attack.

Sonic Lost World
  • Take a drink every time you die during the Minecart level.
  • If you're a completionist, take one drink for every Red Ring you miss per level.
  • Take one drink if you die and have to hear one member of the Deadly Six taunting you.
    • Only take sips if it's during one of the final levels.
  • Take a drink if you run up a wall by accident.
  • Take a drink every time you botch a homing attack.

Sonic Boom (oh god, not again)
  • Take a drink if you encounter a glitch.
  • Take one drink for every time a character makes an observation about bounce pads. You will be dead before you even finish the game.
    • same thing applies to rings...
    • or buttons...
    • or boost pads...
    • or ramps...
  • Take a sip every time you hear the same repeated line over, and over, and over again.
  • Take a sip when you encounter an animation error in a cutscene.
  • Take a drink when you die in the boat section (with awful controls to boot).
  • Take a sip when you collect another ring after reaching the ring cap of 100.
  • Take a sip when the frames start to drop below 30 FPS.
  • When the graphics get worse after plugging in a second player for co-op, take two drinks.
  • Take a sip every time you compare the game to Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), including calling it Sonic '06 2 or Sonic 2014.

Sonic Mania
  • As with Generations, take a sip every time a new Zone brings about a wave of nostalgia.
  • Take a drink if you run out of ground trying to fight the Death Egg Robot.
  • Take a drink every time a Zone-to-Zone transition involves the Phantom Ruby warping your Player Character somewhere.
  • Take two drinks if you go from one Zone to the next with no real transition.
  • In Oil Ocean Zone:
    • Take a sip every time your Flame Shield ignites the oil.
    • If the fumes in Act 2 start to drain your Rings, start chugging and don't stop until you either extinguish the fumes or die.
  • Take a drink every time you fail the 5th Emerald stage.

Sonic Forces
  • Take a drink whenever Infinite appears.
  • Take a tiny sip every time you obtain something for your custom character.
  • Take a drink when you fail an SOS mission.
  • Take a drink whenever the Phantom Ruby is mentioned.
  • Finish your drink every time you go through Green Hill Zone.
  • Take a drink for every Double Boost segment.

Blue Sphere (both S3&K and Mania versions)
  • Take a drink every time the speed reaches maximum.
  • Take a drink if you hit a red sphere.
  • If there is only one sphere left, take a drink for every 10 seconds that passes without you finding it.
  • Take a drink every time you end up between two bumpers.
  • Take a drink every time you miss the Perfect bonus because converting a grid of blue spheres into rings depleted the blue sphere counter to 0.
  • Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and S3&K only: If you completed the last stage needed to get all seven Chaos or Super Emeralds, toast your victory with a glass of champagne.

Super Sonic/Final Bosses
  • If you were killed by a squish trap while Super/Hyper, take 2 drinks instead of one.
  • Take a drink if you fall into a bottomless pit while Super/Hyper. If it's the infamous Mystic Cave Zone pit, keep on drinking while you wait to run out of rings.
  • Finish your drink if you are non-lethally knocked out of your Super/Hyper state through a method other than running out of rings (e.g. from Sonic 3's Big Arms).
  • Take a drink if, during normal gameplay, you run out of rings and return to normal.
  • Take two drinks if you automatically die to a final boss by running out of rings and losing the super state.
    • Take 3 drinks if you die as a result of being hit by the final boss and subsequently running out of rings right afterwards. (But take just 2 drinks if it was Solaris or Perfect Dark Gaia.) note 
  • In Sonic 4 Episode II, take a drink every time you lose Super Sonic due to having to use a Tails move.
  • If you die due to five minutes passing during the Final Hazard fight, drink half a bottle.
  • Drink a whole bottle after The Reveal by Eggman during the Devil Doom fight.
