Seven Devils is the second installment in a The Hunger Games fanfiction series created by FoalyWinsForever. The story picks up a few months after the events of the first (A Heart of Broken Glass); the smoldering ruins of the once great Capitol city and its residents in disarray as the elusive and rebellious group known as Tactics, asserts their control of Panem under the iron fist of a soft-spoken, ruthless tyrant.

The sequel, in all its M-rated goodness, can be viewed here.

Seven Devils contains examples of:

  • Abusive Parent: Vendetta's father was harsh, sexist, and neglectful to her growing up, simply because she happened to be a girl. Some of the last advice he offers her is that she should use her "female advantages" if she ever hoped to win.
  • Action Girl: Isana Tremaine, since her introduction. Luster is also pretty handy with sticking darts into people before they can even notice. Aliara Bavier and Koi Shimizu count as well, being Careers.
  • Anyone Can Die: Well, this IS a Hunger Games fic...But this starts ridiculously early, when Tactics killed Ivette's two friends for accidentally trespassing in an abandoned grain silo. Then later, the political prisoners/slaves in the Chariot Rides were gunned down. Just after that, Zira kills little Fiora Sinclair. For the Interviews, if a District couldn't hold out against Zira for the time limit, their District Mentor was executed. Devra Tremula mysteriously disappears before the Games as well, presumed dead. This all happens before the actual Games begin.
  • Ax-Crazy: Grant seems to shaping up to be this, considering his mental illness and violent, evil side.
    • Koi Shimizu also isn't fully..."right" in the head.
  • Badass Adorable: Koi Shimizu. She's a trained Career, and yet is a tiny, energetic Asian girl.
  • Beta Couple: The now dead Lukiss (Luka/Viss). Also, Ameriel (Amelia/Ariel) even if Ariel is barely functioning as a human being.
  • Big Bad: Amrytaeus is the leader of Tactics, and essentially the new dictator of Panem.
    • Adrienne is essentially Luther II, so this is a given.
    • Vindictus seems to be the most violent of the Careers, and possibly the biggest threat amongst them.
    • Along with his habit of breaking the fourth wall, and general eeriness, Pip is shaping up to be this as well.
  • Black Humor: Foaly, and various instances already seen in Seven Devils.
    • Amrytaeus and Deyna Balthasar have this as well.
  • Blatant Lies: Adrienne tells Hollie that she has nothing to do with Tactics or Luther and she's simply an ordinary girl, right before the Chariot Rides.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: The Deynaverse in general, but Foaly promises that Seven Devils will be this, compared to its sequel.
  • Blood Knight: Essentially the Careers, but it seems obvious in Vindictus, Isana, and Koi.
  • Broken Base: Blair Carmine is the largest example. Half the readers love him and want him to win. The other half dislike him and find him to be a rich fuckboy.
  • Broken Bird: Definitely Ariel Sevasti from all the shit he's been through. It's incredibly obvious to Amelia, who notes that he only smiles for her sakes, and he always seems afraid that she'll leave him.
    • It seems like Ivette is shaping up to be this as well. First, her two friends die in Pre-Games because of her recklessness and then she accidentally killed Chock, her own ally, with a battle axe.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Ignacio "Cio" Lumbre. He is so oblivious to his environment, he hardly noticed or even cared when his t-shirt caught fire (and half the neighborhood with it). What did he care about instead? The puppies.
  • Compliment Backfire: Blair tries to compliment Teddy about how 'talented' he is in a smut video taken without Teddy ever knowing. Blair is actually, for once, sheepish and sorry for ever bringing it up, after Teddy sasses him.
  • Country Mouse: Ellodie Howell comes from a horse ranch in rural District Ten.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Blair Carmine is the heir to a huge tycoon of District 2. It gets him in quite a bit of trouble, actually. He has his name rigged into the Hunger Games after his family is relocated to Twelve. Then one of the victims of his family's budget cuts, Vin, Volunteers to be able to kill him in the Games.
  • Cute and Psycho: Koi Shimizu.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Never put puppies within any range of Ignacio Lumbre. Once he sees them, all logic and reason flies out the window with him.
  • Dad the Veteran: Chock's father. Slightly inverted since he is still a Peacekeeper.
  • Darker and Edgier: The Deynaverse in itself, but even Foaly said that Seven Devils was going to be darker than even A Heart of Broken Glass.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Luster is part of the witch coven in District 12, but isn't really malicious.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: The entirety of the Capitol
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Koi Shimizu is a girl from District 4 who's named after a fish, and eats a lot of fish, in a District where the main attraction is fishing.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Severin seemed to reach this point as soon as he was Reaped, in which he admits he just didn't care.
    • Ivette's two friends died via execution from Tactics even before the Games were supposed to start. And then she accidentally kills Chock with a battle axe, in a fight against District Four in the Games.
  • Disappeared Dad: Teddy's father.
  • Dragon Ascendant: After Luther's death, both Adrienne Stanwood and Zira Constantine have become this to Tactics.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The second chapter of the story, Amrytaeus brings up Damien Carmine's son, Blair. He also mentions the Catholics (Severin) and the Witches in District 12 (Luster).
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Luther Constantine, and her Tactics successor, Adrienne Stanwood
  • Emotionless Girl: Adrienne; and coming from Tactics, this is to be expected.
  • Emotion Suppression: Tactics invokes this into most of their agents. It depends on one's opinion of it works. A prime example is Zira.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Deyna describes Amrytaeus, Panem's new ruler, as being small and dark-haired, with the face of "a cursed porcelain doll".
  • Fate Worse than Death: Promised to the District and/or loved ones of any Tribute who doesn't embark the Train.
  • First-Episode Twist: The Capitol was bombed, Deyna Balthasar survived, and Tactics has taken over Panem.
  • From Bad to Worse: Essentially everyone that was Reaped for the Games.
    • Special mentions go to Theodore "Teddy" Maddox . First, his dad leaves his mother, and he and his little sister are children born from a prostitute. Then Teddy and his mother are both prostitutes to raise money for their little family to survive. Then, Teddy is Reaped for the Hunger Games, and his little sister Pippa knows his profession, plus is ready to become a prostitute herself. Before Teddy leaves on the Train, his Escort essentially recruits Pippa into Tactics, where she won't have to pay to get an education, but will become brainwashed. Just before the Chariots are to start Teddy learns from Blair that there's a video of him during his 'job', and probably a lot of people have seen it. Poor guy's life is like a soap opera...
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Blaize Woods, but mostly when it comes to clocks.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Adrienne Stanwood certainly follows in the footsteps of Luther Constantine.
    • Blair's name can also count.
    • Readers thought Cyph Noetta was a girl, until checking the Tribute list showed Cyph was male.
    • From A Heart of Broken Glass, there was also Ariel Sevasti, to constrast Luther Constantine.
  • Genki Girl: Koi. From the moment we're first introduced to her, she's doing cartwheels around her kitchen and drumming with silverware.
  • Genre Savvy: Because he knew his importance, Blair Carmine decides to spend 18 hours a day getting the best training money can buy, in the year he has before being chucked into the Hunger Games.
    • Chock's father also warns his children ahead of time, before the people of the Districts officially knew that the Hunger Games were going to be reinstated. It helps that he's a Peacekeeper.
    • Pip seems to consider his fellow tributes to be parts of a story, and that gives him an edge on how to maneuver around them.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Cio and Koi from District 4. Tyson and Ellodie from District 10 count as well.
  • Hooker with a Heart of Gold: Various circumstances forced Theodore "Teddy" Maddox to turn towards a life of prostitution in order to make ends meet for his mother and sister.
  • Indy Ploy: From impulsively hiding bodies to escaping from prison, Isana doesn't appear to think ahead when it comes to initiating her game plans. She almost always seems to make things up as she goes along, and she's surprisingly successful too.
  • Insane Equals Violent:
    • Grant has a mental disorder, where his 'crazier', 'darker' half is very violent.
    • It seems rather obvious that there's not something quite...right, when it comes to Pip, despite his chipper attitude. After all, he kills Hollie Carnegie messily while smiling, causes Blair incredible pain for added drama factor, and most of the Tributes are scared or wary of him.
  • Karma Houdini: Deyna Balthasar managed to stab the President with a pen, escaped interrogation and the Capitol before it was bombed. Then, he was taken in by Tactics, came to an agreement with the new Dictator of Panem, and became the Head Gamemaker for the next set of Hunger Games. You glorious bastard...
  • Kill the Cutie: Inevitable in a Hunger Games fic, but Zira killing Fiora Sinclair- smallest, youngest, most innocent tribute- as a 'sacrifice' for Luther's alter is about as accurate as you can get
    • Kierie's nephew was saved when Vindictus Volunteered, yet he was one of the political prisoners that had to tote around the Chariots...And then only one small sentence was spared for his death.
  • Last Plan Standing: Amrytaeus is the leader of Tactics, and then swiftly becomes the next dictator of Panem.
  • Miscarriage of Justice: Isana wound up in prison after she was caught trying to do away with the body of a boy her friend had killed. With Isana being the only one on the scene, she was obviously the prime suspect.
  • Meaningful Name: Many Tributes have names based on either their industry, or certain characteristics they have.
    • Vindictus is incredibly vindictive to Blair Carmine.
    • Ignacio's nickname/original name "Cio" sounds like Sea-Oh. Even pointed out by Cio himself. Not to mention his last name translates to 'light' and he's very obviously a pyromaniac.
    • Koi is a girl from District 4 that often eats fish at home. Shimizu is a Japanese name that has to do with water.
    • Hollie's last name, Carnegie, is like Carnegie Steel Industry. Hollie is the mayor's daughter, and lives in District 6, known for its transportation, which needs steel and metals for their hovercrafts/trains/etc.
    • Maple Bark comes from District 7. Enough said. Doubles for a Punny Name.
    • Vendetta Scott certainly has a vendetta against her father...
    • Tyson is from District 10, the Livestock District. Tyson Foods is a well-known corporation.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Teddy is forced into low-riding, tight pants, and is shirtless, for his Chariot outfit.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Zira's full name is Azrael, and he seems to have earned it.
  • Nature Hero: Ellodie Howell — specifically regarding horses.
  • Not So Stoic: Adrienne Stanwood is a sore loser, who enjoys making others go through pain, even if she tries to take her job super seriously. She also does a decent job in acting semi-normal, enough to trick Hollie Carnegie.
  • Oh, Crap!: When most of the Reaped realize they've just gotten Reaped for the Hunger Games.
    • When Ivette saw that the abandoned grain silo was not that abandoned after all, and that her friends were right.
    • Blair, when he stumbled across the coven of witches in the woods, and all of them pointed weapons at his face. At the end of the chapter as well, when he finally noticed that Luster had shanked him with a dart.
    • Tyson and Pip (specifically his "Oh my!" comment) when Tactics started to shoot the slaves/prisoners that were carrying the Chariots...And that the Chariots were going to fall, with the Tributes falling on top of dead bodies...
    • Blair, once he sees Vin come straight at him during the Bloodbath, and has the realization that Vindictus is much stronger than him and will very probably kill him.
  • Parental Abandonment: Since this is Panem, this is going to be a given to happen.
  • Passion Is Evil: Vindictus towards killing Blair.
    • Also, this certainly applied to Luther's torturous treatment of Ariel in A Heart Of Broken Glass. Multiple times.
  • Pet the Dog: Literally with Cio. He may be a pyromaniac Career who burned his neighborhood down, but he saved a litter of puppies from a burning house.
  • Playing with Fire: Cio
  • Professional Killer: The Careers, since they trained for the Games.
  • Proper Lady: Hollie Carnegie is the daughter of the mayor for District 6.
  • Pyromaniac: Ignacio "Cio" Lumbre.
  • Rich People: The Carmines, definitely. They're one of the richest families in District 2, but Damien Carmine has also made a lot of enemies...Which causes problems for his son, Blair.
  • Run or Die: Chock's father told his children to run away as soon as he found out the Hunger Games were being reinstated, in fear that one of them would be Reaped.
  • Secret Relationship: Aliara Bavier is in a hush-hush relationship with her housemaid, Zelena. Eventually, they both run away together and go in hiding so her father never finds out.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: A Heart of Broken Glass still had its humor, but this is the most likely route Seven Devils will take as things get very serious, very quickly.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: Blair Carmine, Chock Willies, and Hollie Carnegie are Reaped for the Hunger Games specifically because of their fathers being in high positions amongst their Districts and making political enemies out of Tactics.
  • Smug Snake: Blair Carmine.
  • Social Services Does Not Exist: There's no help whatsoever to orphans/street rats like Cyph Noetta, or children that are forced into prostitution like Theodore "Teddy" Maddox.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Amrytaeus fits this to a T.
  • Son of a Whore: Teddy — literally.
  • Speak of the Devil: Whenever Tactics is mentioned, or anything shady happening around the Districts by the Tribute's inner monologues...Tactics then appears.
  • Straw Nihilist: Despite Severin's devotions, his inner thoughts are often brooding and cynical, constantly in an effort to rationalize his God's intentions.
  • Street Urchin: Cyph Neotta. He's covered in filth (and loves it), sleeps in trash-cans, and carries around a dead, decomposing cat for a pet.
  • Survivor Guilt: Luka still isn't over Viss's death, nor the bombing of the Capitol, despite how he tries to appear his 'normal' cheery self.
  • Take a Third Option: Most of the Tributes either spend their 1 year Pre-Games period readying themselves for the Hunger Games, or enjoying time with family. Blaize Woods spends his time working furiously on the clocks of his family's shop, and Caspar Borreche just worries about his grades in school.
  • Teen Genius: Subverted with Caspar Borreche. This is what he WANTS to become, but he admits to himself that he would never be as brilliant as some of his classmates and earn every top score, despite how much he studies and the expectations his parents have for him.
  • Tempting Fate: Ellodie talks to a Tactics agent while out riding her horse about death. She's later Reaped for the Hunger Games.
  • The Brute: Vindictus is this, and even mentions that he's not good with "political maneuvering bullshit" and just wanted to smash things. Specifically, Blair Carmine's skull.
  • The Determinator: Blair Carmine never loses. He literally can't afford to.
  • The Dragon: Zira, to Amrytaeus.
  • The Hedonist: Vendetta Scott is up for anything as long as she's getting pleasure out of it.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Nothing's going to get in the way of Vindictus killing Blair Carmine. It's been Vin's driving force ever since the factory accident that killed his grandfather, and gave him gruesome scars.
  • There Are No Coincidences: The Reaping is rigged for many politically important children, or just kids with interesting personalities/pasts that would spice things up in the Games.
  • There Are No Therapists: Vindictus' bloodlust towards Blair, Grant's mental condition, Ivette's friends being executed by Tactics— amongst many other issue could use a therapist or two
    • From all the trauma Ariel's gone through in AHOBG, he's simply an empty shell of a person right now.
    • Luka's low self-confidence and self-worth after no one listened to his suggestion of NOT bombing the Capitol, as well as losing Viss in the infirmary on the Lazarus.
  • The Runaway: Aliara is a unique example; she ran away and went into hiding from her father due to her relationship with their housemaid.
  • The Workaholic: Blaize Woods is a skilled clock-maker — so intensely dedicated to his craft that even being Reaped in the Hunger Games couldn't deter him from his labour.
  • Time Skip: Between A Heart of Broken Glass, and Seven Devils.
    • There's also a one year time period between the Reapings, and when the Tributes have to board the Train for the Pre-Games activities.
  • Token Minority: Devra Tremula, Koi Shimizu, Ignacio "Cio" Lumbre, and Ivette Levaul.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Severin Rush is faithfully devoted to a Christian sect.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Blair Carmine spent the entire year, 18 hours a day, undergoing the best survival training money could buy.
    • Chock Willis was also warned by his father to ready himself for the Games, and considering the man had a high position on the Peacekeeper ladder, it's possible Chock has done this as well.
  • Torture Technician: Not only is Adrienne Stanwood a part of Tactics, she specializes in Interrogation and Espionage. She's also sadistic, who's verbal interrogations take twice as long as the physical torture ones do.
  • Villainous Legacy: Luther Constantine. Their name alone has become synonymous with pure evil; the thought of them sends chills down people's spines. And for good reason, since a large amount of Tactics's success is a direct result of their actions.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Teddy is forced to walk around shirtless for his Chariot Rides outfit.
