Go To

A Heart of Broken Glass is the first fanfiction in the Deynaverse, the universe that was created by Fanfiction user Foaly Wins Forever. It is an M rated fic that was published on September 24th 2014, and was completed on April 17th 2015. It is followed by Seven Devils.

A Heart of Broken Glass contains examples of:

  • Action Girl: Quite a number of the female cast
    • Kaya breaks free from her overtly controlling ally Luther. She triest to kill Luther on seperate occasions, even though she is the biggest threat in the Games.
    • Amelia is ready to get to work as soon as they get to Training. Safe to say, she's always ready to save Ariel, or kick ass.
  • Action Girlfriend:
    • Amelia
    • Viss
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Caddis.
  • All Are Equal in Death: The story has a wide range as characters and none of them are really safe.
  • A Million Is a Statistic:
    • This sentiment is expressed by Fife in the story.
    • Foaly subverts this, but kind of doesn't. When the Capitol was nuked it was the most horrifying moment of the story and you feel the pain of so many characters, it's also a big plot shaker. Despite this, for many readers there are other moments which are more tear-worthy.
  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: Luther.
  • Anti-Hero: Viss is all for killing Luther and saving Luka but she does so for selfish reasons. She's also rather apathetic about everything and everyone if it's not Luka, unless angered by Luka getting into shenanigans.
  • Anyone Can Die: A staple trope for the SYOT.
  • Artistic License – Nuclear Physics: Foaly knows her nuclear, but there are examples of her purposely taking artistic liberties for varying reasons.
    • Foaly avoids particular symptoms of radiation sickness in order to not nauseate her readers.
    • Foaly acknowledged that Luther escaping Amaris' wrath via nuclear reactor is highly unlikely to work.
  • Asshole Victim: Although he was well loved by readers, Woohyun was an asshole and a victim. Minutes after he was mildly transphobic to Amelia he met a grisly end thanks to his District partner.
  • Ass Pull: The original plan involved Luther and Ariel allying, Ariel killing Luka, Viss stuffing radioactive material down Ariel's throat, and Reyna, Kaya, Viss, and Des allying.
  • Ax-Crazy: After killing a quarter of the tributes, Amaris was ready to chalk down another two kills.
    • Caddis.
  • Back from the Dead: Ariel, though not really.
  • Badass Adorable
    • Luka
    • Desdemona
  • Badass and Child Duo: Desdemona and the affectionately named Tedatlas When both of them meet an untimely end Amelia ends up taking their place.
  • Bastard Understudy: Kaya is this to Luther.
  • Berserk Button: For reasons related to his past, Ariel really doesn't like being called a bitch.
  • Battle Couple: Viss and Luka
  • Beast Man: Fenris, of course.
  • Beta Couple: Lukiss (Viss/Luka)
  • Better as Friends: After Jaiven's death Amelia acknowledges that the Capitol and others probably assumed they had something going on - they didn't.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Luther is this to Luka. Naturally, he falls for this, though Viss does not.
  • Bittersweet Ending: 6 Tributes managed to survive until being rescued by the Rebels, but one died on their ship, one was utterly traumatized from his experience in the Arena, and the Capitol ended up being bombed, killing thousands upon thousands of innocent people.
  • Black Humor: A Foaly speciality, so expect to see a little in everyone.
    • Luther is the character who radiates this most by far, though.
    • Deyna is a very close second.
  • Blood Knight: Amaris lives for violence. In her introductory POV she beats somebody badly. And in the arena she's a lot worse.
  • Break the Haughty: Ariel's a little bit too big for his boots. Naturally, Luther kicks him down a notch.
  • Brick Joke: A toaster is built by Amelia when she'd been waiting for Ariel to wake up from self-dosing himself with chemicals in a lab. Later, when our darling villain Luther waltzes into the same lab the toaster suddenly goes off, making her jump and SCARING her. One of the few times readeres can count on one hand, where Luther has ever shown fear.
  • Butt-Monkey: Luka is already chipper and the comic relief of the characters, but he gets put through the ringer multiple times despite Viss always trying to save him.
    • Ariel is also another example. Poor guy just keeps being Luther's chew-toy, despite managing to get a hold of her and torturing her at one point.
  • Came Back Wrong: After Ariel is revealed to be alive he has significantly changed due to the trauma he has gone through, and it's not for the best. It also earned him the fan nickname 'Scariel', because he was pretty scary at times.
  • Cat Scare: Of all people it is Luther who gets the story's biggest cat scare. She jumps because of a toaster. A freaking toaster.
  • Characters Dropping Like Flies: ... Well it is a Hunger Games fic.
  • Classic Villain: Luther
    • Amaris also counts
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Luka
  • Cool Starship: Lazarus, kind of.
  • Corrupt Politician: Anyone powerful within the Capitol, though President Fife is naturally the prime example.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: Tibbi starts off as a sweet and innocent Gamemaker, but when she leads the rebellion she takes on a much, much darker persona.
  • Cradling Your Kill: Luka with Caddis - it was a sad moment indeed.
  • Creepy Monotone: How Viss speaks
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Viss gets blown up by Luther's bomb, lays on the grouund slowly dying of radiation, hangs on long enough to survive being saved and lasts hours in a painful limbo, and then finally dies in an infirmary bed to a horrified Luka sobbing over her body.
    • Castalia's death is also quite wince-worthy.
  • Cultured Badass: Amelia, definitely. Not only is she well-versed with gender and emotional issues, and a well-trained Career...But she can also build a kick-ass toaster.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Ariel and Luther's vendetta leads to both of them wanting to crush each other.
  • Damsel in Distress: Definitely subverted. Amelia rescuing Ariel happens a lot. As does Viss saving Luka.
  • Dark Action Girl: The female Careers could be considered this.
    • The postergirl seems to be Amaris, who is always ready to kill people. She manages to kill 1/4 of the entire Arena singlehandedly.
    • Reyna is determined that everyone either than her is evil, and sets off to kill them.
    • Merona doesn't really give a shit about anyone, even with her partnership with Amaris. Then she ends up fighting Amaris, and dying...
  • Dark Messiah: Tibbi thinks she's the person who is going to save Panem from its brutal government, but she quickly becomes a brutal leader in and of herself.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Foaly's humor is perfect for this.
    • Characters that are particularly good at this are Kaya, Ariel, Amaris, Woohyun and Viss.
    • Amelia, however, takes the crown. Despite not being your cliché deadpan snarker, when scorned she will wipe the floor with the best comebacks.
  • Death by Mocking: If Amaris spent more time killing and less time mocking Luka and Kaya there'd probably be a higher chance that she'd be the one to board Lazarus.
  • Defiant to the End: Lillen.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Happens to Luka. Twice.
    • The first time was when he killed Caddis. The experience pained him greatly, which led him to hold Caddis in his final moments.
    • The second time was with his love, poor Viss.
  • Died Happily Ever After: Viss. Before she died she knew she'd done what she'd planned to all along: made sure Luka made it out of the arena. The baddies were killed and the rebels had swooped in to save the day, so she died happy.
  • Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead:
    • Is there any point putting a spoiler? Ah, well... Luther.
    • Also, the Capitol gets destroyed, and with it the President's grip on Panem.
  • Disappeared Dad: Desdemona.
  • Disney Villain Death: Luther gets one hell of one.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Luther and Ariel, when you think they can't be any worse to each other they always find a way to do something awful to each other. However, Luther definitely takes it one-million steps too far.
  • Does Not Like Men: Arguably Luther, considering she is more inclined to torture them than she is with women.
  • Downer Ending: The Capitol was bombed despite just about everyone's hesitancy, killing thousands upon thousands of innocent people— including a young girl and relatives of one of the Rebels. And then later, Tactics takes over Panem...
  • Driven to Suicide: Ariel.
  • Drugs Are Good: Or Ariel seems to think so, anyway.
    • Ariel's love for drugs means he was semi conscious when Luther drugged him on the train.
    • His attempt to overdose also fails because of this.
  • Drunk with Power: Tibbi.
  • Duel to the Death: A few. The most noticeable example being the clash between Merona and Amaris which didn't end well for Merona.
  • Dumb Muscle: Fenris, who wasn't the brightest despite his intimidating physical prowess.
  • Dysfunction Junction: Everyone.
    • Special shout out goes to Ariel, Luther, Amaris, Fenris and Caddis.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Tibbi wasn't shown to be intelligent or competant in The 10000th Games, the prequel to AHOBG.
    • Ariel knew the different, secret divisions of the power plant workers. In his cameo chapter, he knew where Luther worked, even if he never called it Tactics. After a certain point, it became obvious how truly dangerous Tactics was.
  • Eaten Alive: Probably Jaiven, though nobody quite knows what The Thing did.
  • Emotionless Girl: Viss.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • Luther averts this comfortably.
    • Amaris does not. She has family who has affected her profoundly, though it isn't in a positive way. It also doesn't help that she no longer has a mother and she has a sister who is terrified to death of her.
  • Evil Genius: Luther is both very twisted and very intelligent.
  • First Law of Resurrection: The fic both successfully subverts this trope while following it quite well. While Foaly does Show that Ariel is not dead, she also admitted that she wanted to bring Luther back, but didn't for the sake of plausibility.
  • For the Evulz: Luther's motivation for all the screwed up stuff she did.
    • Debatably Deyna.
  • For the Lulz: Deyna does a lot of things just because it amuses him and he doesn't care much for the consequences.
  • Friendship Moment: Multiple characters have these moments, examples including:
    • Jaiven and Amelia
    • Ted and Atlas
    • Atlas and Desdemona
    • Luka and Kaya
  • Gentle Giant: Fenris shows signs of this with Lillen. But in the arena he really, really isn't a gentle giant.
  • Good Is Not Dumb: Luka is often underestimated because of his sweet nature. This doesn't end well for those who underestimate him, especially Caddis and Amaris.
  • Grey-and-Gray Morality: While good and evil is relatively clear cut in the fic, Foaly isn't scared of showing the moral nuances which naturally come with a forced fight to the death, and sometimes you're left questioning who the good guys and the bad guys are. A few examples being:
    • Ariel is one of the series' protagonists, kind of. Despite this, he shoots Carmen and seems to not regret it and goes kind of insane. He also helps build the bomb that destroys the Capitol, though he definitely regrets that.
    • Unlike the original series, Careers aren't automatically villains. Jaiven and Amelia are quite decent. However, they are still killers. Later on in the fic Amelia is forced to scrutinise her past worldview and widely held beliefs.
    • Despite Caddis being quite evil, you feel sorry for him when he meets a grisly end. Throughout the fic you also feel sympathy for Amaris, especially because of her strained relationship with her mother.
    • Even with somebody as evil and spiteful as Luther, her evilness is put under scrutiny when you realise she was purposely desensitised, trained and manipulated by Tactics, which leads you to wonder if she's truly evil or a by-product of her environment.
    • We soon learn the rebels aren't exactly pure beacons of light either. In their own way, they're as violent and dark as the Capitol, which leads to a lot of disillusionment.
  • Hates Being Alone: Definitely Luka.
    • Not so much Amelia, but when she's forcefully separated from Ariel it's not good for her thoughts process, leading to her having an existential and moral crisis and having a lot of self-doubt and worry.
  • Have a Nice Death: Luther's attitude to Felicity before she kills her.
  • He Knows Too Much: Pretty much Luther's motivation for killing Felicity.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: It becomes apparent very quickly that Deyna has no allegiances, which means he acts in ways which benefit the Rebels, the Capitol and Tactics.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Kaya does this when she realises just how screwed up Luther is, leading her to sabotage Luther's equipment and flee like her life depended on it... which it did.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Ted lets himself meet a nasty end to save Atlas and Des from Amaris. Later, Atlas also fights to his death for Des.
    • Felicity also dies whilst trying to save Des.
    • And lest we forget Lillen who died in the name of the rebellion.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Despite becoming one of the main protagonists and surviving the story. Ariel is a pretty awful person. He does all sorts of screwed up things such as killing Carmen with little remorse, torturing Luther and purposely blowing up the Capitol and thus killing thousands of people. He's far from squeaky clean.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: This is Amelia's reaction when she watches Ariel get thrown into a vat of toxic waste. Thankfully, he didn't actually die.
  • Inspirational Martyr: Lillen who dies for the rebels.
  • It's Personal: Ariel and Luther in a nutshell.
    • Viss and Amelia also have this attitude towards Luther after she fucks over Luka and Ariel.
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: Ted has to tell Des and Atlas this.
  • Iron Woobie: Luka.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Despite being a jerk, everybody tended to like Woohyun and felt bad for him when inevitably bad things happened.
  • Kaiju: The Thing, kind of.
  • Kill the Cutie: Elfor, Felicity and Castalia.
  • Kick the Dog: Sometimes Amaris would do nasty things just because she could, such as randomly slaughtering all of her allies bar Amelia and Ariel.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Amelia, considering what she's been through for being Trans, not to mention all the shit that's gone down in the Arena. Especially when it comes to Ariel.
  • Knight Templar: Reyna thinks she's a good person but she does a lot of very twisted things.
  • Mad Hatter: Deyna embraces his insanity.
  • Mighty Glacier: Viss is tough, dishing out and taking damage like crazy.
    • Jaiven as well. He was the leader of the Career pack, yet wasn't fast enough to escape The Thing, dying very early on in the Games.
    • Subverted by Fenris. He SEEMS like he'd be one, but he's actually incredibly swift, despite his beefiness.
  • Missing Mom: Amaris' mother was missing, and it was implied their relationship is complicated. This probably explains why Amaris is the way she is, and what led her to literally slaughter a quarter of the tributes.
  • Mortal Wound Reveal: When Luther and Fenris attack the Kaya, Ariel, Viss and Luka alliance you think it's bad enough when Ariel is kidnapped and Fenris dies - but it's not. Cue the reveal that Kaya is very, very injured.
  • Mr. Exposition: Ravy. But only very briefly - he's offed in the Bloodbath.
  • Multiple Gun Shot Death: It takes this to take down Amaris and Fenris. They're that badass.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Luka when he kills Amaris and Caddis.
    • Ariel when he destroys the Capitol with a nuclear bomb.
  • Never Found the Body: Ariel after he got pushed into a vat of toxic waste.
    • Because there was no body to find; he survived the ordeal.
  • Noble Top Enforcer: Despite being Luther's henchman and spending a segment of the story as a secondary antagonist, Kaya is only behaving the way she does to survive. As soon as Luther shows her true colors she betrays her and runs away.
  • Oh, Crap!: A few moments.
    • Whenever Luther gets hold of Ariel this comes to mind.
    • When Ariel was thrown into a vat of toxic waste we also think this.
    • Lets not mention Viss' reaction when Luka was attacked and almost killed by mutts not long before she woke up.
    • And the tense moments before the Careers all turned on each other.
    • Also Carmen's reaction when she realises she's dying of radiation poisoning.
  • Only Sane Man: Amongst the Careers, it was split between Jaiven and Amelia. After Jaiven died, Ash became one as well.
    • Kaya was this, amongst the drama between Ariel and Luther, when she was Luther's "henchwoman". Then, later, during her tenous alliance in the "Kill Luther Squad".
    • Elfor seemed to have been this during his short-lived alliance with Desdemonda, Castalia, and Felicity.
  • Opposites Attract: Jaiven, a polite and sensible young man's true love, Tavia, is an ex-prostitute.
  • Parental Neglect: Ariel. We find out his parents don't love each other and had him for practical purposes. They don't show much affection to him. Throughout the story, we see they have a big effect on making him who he is today.
    • They also don't seem to care much about the immense pain and trauma their son goes through in the Games, and seem to hint that they think it would be better if he died.
  • Passive-Aggressive Kombat: Woohyun wasn't much of a fighter, but in a verbal sparring match he usually put down his Career allies.
  • Playing Hard to Get: Knowing what Ariel is like, Amelia does this to ensure his affection was genuine.
  • Plucky Girl: While she doesn't quite qualify as an action girl, Desdemona is essentially the leader of her alliance of the youngest Tributes, and keeps being proactive despite her allies constantly dying on her. She even manages to stick it out on her own for a while, before being saved from the Arena.
  • Queer Romance:
    • Amariel. Amelia is a trans woman and Ariel is a pansexual man.
    • Ariel and Woohyun, too.
  • Radiation-Immune Mutants: Expect them in the arena.
  • Raised by Wolves: Fenris was literally raised by wolves, out in the forests of District 10. He was a feral child that was only recently brought into society, and he definitely acts like it.
  • Reluctant Ruler: After Jaiven dies, Amelia takes his place very reluctantly. Considering Amaris went on a rampage and killed most of the alliance not long after, you understand why.
  • Rescue Romance: Lukiss (Luka and Viss) and Amariel (Amelia and Ariel).
  • Resurrected Romance: Amariel. Amelia thinks she's lost Ariel, but she hasn't. The romance resumed though it definitely has problems.
  • Revenge: Ariel gets a morsel of this by finally capturing Luther. However, she makes sure to get her own revenge, and it's ten times worse.
  • Ridiculously Average Guy: Jukai introduces himself as this.
  • Sadist: Luther goes out of her way to make sure her District partner, Ariel Sevasti, goes through hell in the Arena. Even toturing him mentally, emotionally, and physically in multiple occassions.
  • Satan: Luther Constintine has been refered to as Satan by readers for her dastardly deeds.
  • Sequel Hook: The Capitol is left destroyed by a nuclear bomb, which will most probably hook you into Seven Devil's as you want to know the aftermath. It isn't pretty.
  • Shown Their Work: Foaly sure knows her stuff when it comes to science. Even if some things are played for Rule of Cool or Rule of Drama, her knowledge of radioactivity and reactors is accurate and well-written.
  • Talking Down the Suicidal: This is basically Amelia's job after Luther got her way with Ariel.
  • Tearjerker: Many instances, since this is a fic based on the Hunger Games
    • Luka accidentally killing Caddis. Horrified, Luka wraps the boy up in his puppet, apologizing profusely and muttering about how he was going to be okay. Caddis's death showed that at his core, he was just a kid, like anyone else.
    • Ted having make Atlas and Des leave him behind to the mercies of Amaris and the bullfuckery showdown, knowing he would slow his allies down and get them killed. He would rather die instead of trying to prolonge the inevitable.
    • Viss's near-death from Luther detonating her suicide bomb. And then later, Viss's real death on the Lazarus, content with having done her job and bringing Luka alive to his father, and Luka sobbing over her dead body.
  • The Brute: Fenris was very big and often very bad.
  • The Chosen One: Reyna is convinced that she was reaped in order to defeat the people who had broken laws.
    • Lillen was chosen by the rebels to help them further their cause in the arena.
  • The Determinator: Viss. She only has one goal in mind: saving Luka.
    • Luka can also be considered an example. Despite how broken and battered his body is by the time the Rebels save him, he doesn't give up surviving.
  • The Pollyanna: Luka Skade, as a rare male example.
  • The Revolution Will Not Be Civilized: In this fic this becomes very clear.
  • The Snark Knight: Of all the characters, Kaya wins this.
    • Occasionally Amelia will gallantly ride in and claim this.
    • Foaly being great with snarky dialogue and humor, expect most of the characters to have their moments.
  • Torture Technician: As Ariel finds out, torture is Luther's speciality.
    • Reyna is also reported to be quite good at "interrogation."
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Foaly stated this was purposely subverted; Ariel is a pretty kinky person who you think wouldn't be able to be tortured or broken. He is.
  • To the Pain: Torturing is Luther's hobby, and her favourite subject is Ariel.
  • Tragic Bromance: Ted and Atlas. Their bromance was pretty great. But it was kind of ruined when Amaris killed Ted.
  • Tsundere: Viss is cold towards everyone bar Luka, and even then she rarely shows a soft side towards him.
  • Underestimating Badassery:
    • Luka is underestimated, and those who underestimate him often end up dying.
    • Des is also underestimated, but she leads the tots, takes charge of boys who are much older than her and comes out of the arena alive.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: Despite enjoying a make-out session the sexual connection between Woohyun and Ariel is never really resolved, especially because Ariel and Amelia get together and Woohyun meets a sad ending.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Tibbi. She means well and wants to make the world a better place, but her utilitarian outlook means she can do things which make her as bad as the Capitol. Such as blowing the whole Capitol up.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Ariel, who tries to blow up the whole arena out of desperation. Oh, and he also ends up destroying the whole Capitol.
  • Wrench Wench: Desdemona's mother and sister are engineers. Because of this she's inherited some of their talent.
  • Villainous Friendship: Caddis and Ariel seemed to have something similar to this. It was very brief.
    • Merona and Amaris, though they turn on each other very easily.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Anything or anyone that hurts Luka gets obliterated. Even Luther.
