    Kaname Tatara

Kaname Tatara

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaname_tatara.PNG

The elder of the Tatara twins. Kaname is an athletically gifted young man who unfortunately possesses a naturally scary-looking face, scaring away people he tries to be nice to. Despite this, he dreams of landing the role of his favorite Toku hero, Zipman, and finally making his Childhood Friend Cheena smile.

  • The Ace: When it comes to sports, no one can top him. He's (in)famous in his school as the "White Demon" who utterly destroys the competition, winning a soccer game with a powerful overhead kick before running over to a baseball game and instantly striking a home run.
  • Aloof Big Brother: Inverted. Kaname is the older of the Tatara twins and is constantly looking out for Koshiro's well-being, asking if Koshiro's feeling alright and if he's been eating after getting his consciousness transferred into a robot. By contrast, Koshiro is constantly looking down on Kaname and rebuffs all of his attempts to help.
  • Bare-Handed Blade Block: He learned to do this as part of his stuntman training by having people swing wooden swords at him so he can catch them (often getting clocked on the head in the process). It proves invaluable when facing a Zipdown member wielding an enormous Vibroweapon BFS with Absurd Cutting Power, as he was pinned down at the time and couldn't dodge it.
  • Buffy Speak: Kaname doesn't have a way with words, to put it lightly.
Kaname: Could... this be... the super biggest "strong person" thing I've ever done?!
  • Calling Your Attacks: 100,000 HORSEPOWER JACK ROCKET!
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: He admits that he sucks at lying and keeping secrets, and his inability to avoid acting suspiciously around Cheena is what gets her into harms way as Cutie Charm targets her for the zipper she found.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Kaname is ludicrously athletic as a talented acrobat who can punch through cinder blocks with ease. He's also so talented at sports that he wins a soccer game for his high school team before immediately running over to the baseball game to win it as well without even looking winded. This is after biking through Tokyo to get to class. He also bikes all the way to his new gig as a monster in the Jackman show and runs all the way down Tokyo Tower without showing any kind of exhaustion. Flashbacks show him constantly training to perform such feats.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: He's just a normal (if ridiculously athletic) guy without the Zipman suit.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: He's motivated to become Jackman in hopes of getting Cheena to smile for him once, but it's blatantly clear that while she likes him as a friend, she only has eyes for Koshiro.
  • Face of a Thug: Kaname is a swell guy who dreams of bringing people smiles as a Toku hero, but his devilish appearance, creepy scars, and perpetual Slasher Smile get him labels like "Devil-Gorilla" and "White Demon". After he's turned down for the role of Jackman, he trembles with disappointment and frustration, terrifying the judges until Kaname politely bows and thanks them for the opportunity before leaving in a sulk.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Kaname has numerous scars running along the left side of his face, adding to his demonic appearance even though he's actually a sweet guy.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Despite being an all-around Nice Guy, his scary features and inability to articulate himself well get him a bad rep, to the point that his fellow classmates are afraid that he'd kill them if they said anything about his Jackman lines.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He loves the Jackman show and can't help but pose whenever it's brought up. He's also wearing Jackman-style gloves wherever he goes and can recite specific details about Jackman and the shows surrounding its airtime with complete clarity.
  • In-Series Nickname: Kaname's appearance earns him nicknames like "White Demon" and "Devil-Gorilla".
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: Inverted. Koshiro constantly refers to his brother as "Devil-Gorilla". Kaname barks at him to quit calling him a devil, prompting Koshiro to ask if he's alright with being called a gorilla.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: To show just how Made of Iron he is, he's thrown off his bike and cracks his head hard enough to bleed profusely from his head, but he shows absolutely no reaction and continues on as if nothing happened.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Kaname is a prodigious athlete, stuntman, and all-around Nice Guy, but his talents are constantly overshadowed by his brother's intelligence and technical genius that led to incredible advancements in technological research.
  • Slasher Smile: His cheery smiles of contentment unfortunately default to this, scaring everyone around him.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Despite his scary appearance, he gets nervous easily under pressure and loves Jackman so much that he creeps out the people around him before he can make meaningful conversation most of the time.

    Koshiro Tatara

Koshiro Tatara/Weiss Zipman

The younger of the Tatara twins. Koshiro was born with an innate talent for engineering, becoming a world famous scientist by the time he turned sixteen. His consciousness was forcibly transferred into the Zipman suit after it invaded his lab, effectively "killing" him.

  • Brain Uploading: The second chapter reveals that this was forcefully done to Koshiro by the robot suit he's currently inhabiting.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: After his soul gets captured by the user of the Brave Zipsuit, he got rewritten by the Chaiman to be loyal to him.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: A twist in that he is the costume and needs Kaname to pilot him in order to fight. As Weiss Zipman, he doesn't need a pilot.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: It's implied that his dickishness to Kaname is a facade to push him away in hopes of keeping him out of danger. It doesn't work, and others are quick to point out when it slips.
Kaname: I can take off time from school and...
Koshiro: You can't do that. To maintain your identity you need to keep up with normal life.
Assistant: Aww... you're actually looking out for your brother's future...
    Kaname: Oh wow! Thanks bro!
Koshiro: Hey, that's not-! I just want to minimize risk!
  • Insufferable Genius: Koshiro speaks with a constant "holier-than-thou" attitude and Kaname accepts Koshiro's current state because he still sounds as bossy as ever.
  • Jerkass to One: Koshiro is remembered fondly by everyone around him, but he constantly talks down to his twin brother Kaname, calling him a "Devil-Gorilla" and dismissing any and all of Kaname's attempts to help him.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: He complains about the absurdity of the character costumes while fighting Cutie Charm, asking if this is an anime.
  • The Smart Guy: Koshiro is such a genius that his death is said to have set back technological development fifty years. The fact that he doesn't know anything about the Jackman suit surprises Kaname.
Kaname: You don't know anything about that suit?!
    Koshiro: Technically, I don't.
Kaname: Not knowing about something is... pretty rare for you. It's almost like you're stupid.
Koshiro: Shut up! I don't need to hear that from you, Devil-Gorilla!
  • Teen Genius: He's a Nobel Prize laureate at the age of sixteen whose work in engineering is said to have accelerated the field by fifty years.
  • The Lost Lenore: He's this for Cheena, who clearly had a thing for him before his "death". Unbeknownst to her, he's still around, only trapped in the Zipman suit.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Koshiro's general attitude towards everyone around him. He calls his assistants idiots out loud when they drive their truck off a statue like a ramp as Kaname jumps off a multi-story building so they can combine in mid-air.
Koshiro: [getting flung out the truck] AAAH! DAMMIT! ALL OF YOU ARE IDIOTS!

    Jackman/Zipman

Jackman 001/Zipman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zipman_suit.PNG

A character costume styled after the popular Toku hero, Jackman. Koshiro's consciousness was forcibly transferred into it after it busted into his lab. Kaname is able to use it to battle the other character costumes to foil Zipdown's plans.

  • Ability Mixing: Can go "Zip Full Release: Zip Form Quad Fusion" by using four Zip Heads at the same time.
  • Rocket Punch: The Jackman suit's special attack is this, but both Kaname and Koshiro are surprised that it actually did it. It's properties change depending on the Ziphead.
    • The "Giant Robot"'s makes a giant arm.
    • Mr. D's makes it either controllable or target seeking.
  • Sleep-Mode Size: Whenever it's not in battle mode, it takes on a cutesy, floppy-eared appearance.
  • Variant Power Copying: The Ziphead powers of other Zipsuits it uses vary depending on which limb it is placed. It is either exactly what the original had or adapted to a different function.
  • You Are Number 6: It has "001" emblazoned on its chest armor, implying that it was the first of the costumes.

    Cheena Shirakane

Cheena Shirakane

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zipman_cheena.PNG

Kaname's and Koshiro's Childhood Friend. A sweet and spunky girl, both of the Tatara twins fell in love with her after she rescued them from bullies when they were kids, sparking their Sibling Rivalry.

  • Cassandra Truth: Cutie Charm asks her about where Jackman is, but Cheena honestly doesn't know. Cutie Charm doesn't believe her and decides to blast her with a laser beam for being "brainwashed".
  • Damsel in Distress: She's on Tokyo Tower's upper floors when the first giant robot attacks, motivating Kaname to jump into the Zipman suit for the first time to fight it off to protect her. She's later targeted by Cutie Charm after she finds one of the Zipdown zippers, again forcing Kaname and Koshiro to jump in and save her.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She gets her own suit during the final battle modeled after a rabbit, and fights alongside the members of STEEL-X INC. against the Chairman's suits.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Downplayed. The Tatara twins' mutual affection for her started the Sibling Rivalry that made them drift apart. Despite this, Kaname still dotes on Koshiro whenever possible and Koshiro's attitude toward Kaname is implied to be just an act, put up to protect his brother.
