     Aoyama Missionaries note

In General

A guild located at the Shibuya Ward. It's the biggest of the major guilds in the game. It acts as an non-profit organization that helps and welcomes everyone in its area.
  • A House Divided: Many of the members have doubts in Maria's ability to lead. Much of this stems from the angels, who have a very strict view of morality and disapprove of her willingness to lie and give second chances to sinners. The Guild practically erupts into a civil war halfway through Chapter 4. Later chapters show that they're still dealing with the fallout.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Chapter 9 highlights how the Guild, once a major player in the game, has been reduced to a skeleton crew.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: The biggest source of drama in the Guild. Some believe it's important to uphold justice and punish those who do wrong. Others believe that it's more important to help sinners see the light and change their ways, even if it means letting certain things slide.

    Jacob

Jacob

Wandering Holy Fist

Voiced by: Taiten Kusunoki

The blind, but powerful founder of the Guild. He's gone off to spread a message of love, leaving others to maintain the Guild in his place.

  • Fanservice: His outfit is that of a monk or priest, but with the bottom torn to expose his big muscly legs, and his 5-star variant shows enough that it's implied he's Going Commando.
  • Handicapped Badass: He may be blind, but he can still throw out some mean punches.
  • Prophet Eyes: His pale, near featureless eyes emphasize both his impairment and True Sight.
  • Religious Bruiser: A devoted man of the cloth, Jacob will wax religious blurbs right in between bouts of taking down enemies with his bare fists.

    Maria

Maria

Sister of Aoyama

Voiced by: Orie Kimoto

A kind and optimistic girl who assists the protagonist and his friends in Chapter 4. She's a high-ranking member of the Missionaries, but finds her authority questioned by the guild's angels.

  • All-Loving Hero: She's a kind and benevolent girl that believes in redemption and the good in everyone.
  • Consummate Liar: She frequently lies to save people from being punished by the guild.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: You'd think a sweet, kind nun such as herself would be associated with Aether energies, but she's a Nether unit.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: She's actually not "Maria"; rather, the original Maria, who was a holy woman who was very close to this girl, gave her her name and identity after her own death, and the current Maria tries her best to live up to her predecessor's legacy.
  • Empathic Healer: She absorbs pain from others and transfers it to herself, which she transmutes into briar thorns to attack.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: She's not only merciful, but she's also able to see a person's Hidden Heart of Gold. Near the climax of Book 1, she sees right through Nyarlathotep's facade and knows that he hated betraying the Guild. Her perception and kindness are what ultimately allow him to pull a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Gayngst: Had unrequited feelings for the original Maria, her Parental Substitute, and also admits to having nonplatonic feelings for Gabriel as well. Because of her upbringing in the church (at Azazel's encouragement) she goes to great lengths to keep her orientation a secret.
  • Green Thumb: She can summon briars from her sacred artifact. Her beach variant swaps her Nether affinity for Wood.
  • Nun Too Holy: Despite being a Consummate Liar, her status as acting head of the guild remains.
  • Messianic Archetype: She's a kind and benevolent girl that believes in redemption. She also takes the pain of others and inflicts it on herself. And finally, her sacred artifact, "Golgotha's Crucifix" is named after the place where Jesus was crucified.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She delivers one to Gabriel of all people in Christmas Concerto for almost ruining the race just to have her concert at the Aoyama checkpoint. As per usual, Nyarlathotep was the culprit.

    Zabaniyya

Zabaniyya

Hell's Torture Specialist

Voiced by: Hiroaki Hirata

An stoic angel who used to serve as a torturer of sinners. His dark past has left him questioning his worth, resigning himself to life as a tool to be used to exact justice.

  • Divide by Zero: Is victim to a Rule overflow when Ryota tries to heal him. An Exception ensues, and Zabaniyya is overloaded with its power, such that he is sent back to his home world.
  • The Dragon: Acts as this in the second half of Chapter 4.
  • Exalted Torturer: His Role and method of gathering information.
  • Fanservice: His default outfit has him wear a black unitard exposing his thighs. His "mummy" skin has a prominent bulge.
  • Good Is Not Nice: While he is polite to everyone, he still judges people through their actions and punishes them accordingly.
  • Lawful Stupid: He can be such a stickler for the rules, such as trying to punish someone for lying when at the same time, the Aoyama Guild is under siege by Roppongi Tycoons.
  • Playing with Fire: He uses hellfire that burns until it destroys without fail.
  • The Stoic: He considers himself a tool of punishment used to exact justice... At least most of the time.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Arsalan.
  • Worthy Opponent: He left his world in search of "someone of sin" that can best him.

    Azazel

Azazel

Selfless Priest

Voiced by: Junya Inaba

A priest within the church. His Artifact allows him to see anywhere and everything within the domain of the Guild.

  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: His current goat-like body is not naturally his own. His true form is described as a snake with 7 heads and 14 faces. Though he did take this form in the Midsummer School event, we are never shown it as the Protagonist passes out upon seeing it.
  • Balance Buff: He received a unique buff in early 2020 turning his Farseer skill into Earthly Watcher. This upgrade increases his remove buff chances, while also applying weakness and skill seal to enemies, alongside healing his allies, all with fairly high proc rates given his magic range. This upgrade provided an incredible amount of supportive utility to Azazel along with making him one of the best skill sealers in the game.
  • Beast Man: A goatman Transient.
  • Big Brother Is Watching You: His sacred artifact allows him to see EVERYTHING under the guild. Nothing goes by him unnoticed.
  • Bound and Gagged: He's bound by chains that restrict his true power, although you only see those chains in his 4-star form. He actually likes the chains as they allow him to interact with people.
  • Casual Kink: His "taking damage" voice clips are, uh... suggestive of something else.
  • The Exile: He's been driven from his world for his love for humanity. He holds no hatred for his exilers, even seeing the chains that bind his power as a gift to truly let him interact with the humans he loves so much.
  • Fallen Angel: He is a fallen angel, and in his 4-star version you can see him unfurl his wings.
  • Love Freak: He welcomes actions done out of love regardless of the outcome. All actions, no matter how self-destructive they may turn out to be.
  • Ship Tease: In "Valentine's Extravaganza", he asks Babalon where he can find Arc... and then mentions he polished his chains before coming to seek them out.
  • Utility Party Member: Especially so after his update, his skills are focused on helping other party members do their jobs better and easier, by keeping allies alive and sealing enemies skills. The one deficiency he really has is that he cannot remove ally debuffs.

    Choji Iimori

Choji Iimori

Cooking Club Member

Voiced by: Masato Yoshida

A member of the school cooking club who also assists the guild with non-profit events.

  • Big Fun: He's a jolly boy that wants everyone to enjoy what he makes.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has blonde hair and is one of the nicest characters in the game.
  • Support Party Member: His in-game kit revolves around healing his party members.
  • Supreme Chef: He's a member of the cooking club, works as a volunteer cook for Aoyama and his Sacred Artifact allows him to cook the most delicious meals known to man.

    Gabriel

Gabriel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gabriel_3star_full.png
Idol Angel

Voiced by: Orie Kimoto

An angel Idol Singer who seeks to spread a message of love and understanding through her music. Her Artifact is her Compelling Voice, which allows her to manipulate peoples' hearts.

  • Archangel Gabriel: Although in Japanese localization, she's named after her Islamic counterpart, Jibril.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Her power is essentially a form of mind control. Knowing how dangerous it is, she only uses it to calm people down in bad situations.
  • Compelling Voice: Has the power to sway people's hearts with her voice. However, she notably avoids using this ability while performing and making public appearances as an idol, instead gathering fans through her natural charm.
  • Cute Indignant Girl Stance: This in spades when someone does something that annoys her
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": She doesn't like being called "Lady Gabriel" by the other angel transients because it doesn't fit her cute image.
  • Idol Singer: As a kind angel, she first tried to spread her principles on love via preaching, but eventually found a better calling by becoming an idol singer.
  • Light Is Good: A very kind and cheerful angel who is slow to bear grudges for any wrongdoings.
  • Magic Music: She can use her songs for a number of purposes, from calming aggression to buffing her allies.
  • Nice Girl: She's very sweet and cares deeply for her friends, especially Maria.
  • The Ojou: She's treated as such by the other angel transients.

    Hati

Hati

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/managarmr_3star_full.png
Idol Fans

Voiced by: Shou Kouda

An obsessive Gabriel fan with a deep sense of self-loathing and loneliness. His Artifact is a pair of gloves with Wolverine Claws that allow him to create illusions.

  • Crazy Jealous Guy: At one point kidnaps Gabriel to have her heart. He does get better in time though, becoming content to support her anonymously and keeping himself from interacting with her directly at all to avoid endangering her.
  • Doppelgänger Spin: His sacred artifact allows him to bend light and create an illusion of himself. This contrasts with Nyarlathotep.
  • Dub Name Change: From Managarmr to Hati. This may have been to differentiate him more easily from the character already named "Garmr", whom he has nothing to do with plot-wise.
  • Fanboy: Pretty much his whole character revolves around him being one for Gabriel.
  • Inconsistent Dub: While he was referred to as Hati in the English translation of the story, back when the game first began translating, his character files and text box headers still referred to him as Managarmr. This has since been corrected and he is now known as Hati in English.
  • Loony Fan: For Gabriel. Notably, he tries to control himself and is content to simply watch her shows and buy her merchandise until Nyarlathotep warps his mind.
  • The Nicknamer: He refers to the player as his "chum" several times, and Gabriel as his "moon".
  • Stalker with a Crush: To the point of kidnapping Gabriel right in the middle of her concert because he just can't bear to just watch her from afar any longer.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After he is subdued by the Protagonist and Maria reveals her own pain to him, he realizes the error of his ways and joins the protagonist to release Gabriel. He even tries to distance himself from Gabriel to ensure nothing like his kidnapping would happen ever again.
  • Wolf Man: A very fluffy one at that.

    Nyarlathotep

Nyarlathotep

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nyarlathotep_3star_full.png
Popular DJ

Voiced by: Junya Inaba

A famous DJ who works with Gabriel. He assists the Guild with his ability to make hundreds of clones of himself. Despite presenting himself as an ally, he eventually turns against the Guild and reveals himself as one of the antagonists of Chapter 4.

  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: As revealed in Summonpedia 2, Nyarl’s true form as that of a Living Shadow with dozen of eyes and even more withered looking hands crawling out of Full-Metal Alchemist-Style-Truth portals, complete with giant eyes in the middle of them, around his “body”. That’s not even going his smile where he shows off his teeth!
  • Beneath the Mask: While he betrays the Missionaries to the Genociders, it's only because he's compelled to do so by Azathoth, and Maria is able to tell that he's putting up a front to hide just how miserable he is.
  • Card-Carrying Jerkass: His personality can probably be best summarized as "and then there's this asshole".
  • Easily Forgiven: No matter what stunts he pulls, no one seems to hold it against him for long, if ever.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: When Maria confronts Nyarl in Chapter 7, he confirms that he was the one who let the shadows invade the Missionaries. Nyarl expects her to hate him, but is left speechless when Maria forgives him.
  • For the Evulz: He pretty much orchestrated most of Chapter 4's chaos and more, including kidnapping Arsalan and orchestrating the rise of an Exception.
  • Gratuitous English: His in-game lines, quite possibly more so than any other character. "WE ARE CRAWLING CHAOS!"
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Which side of a conflict he helps changes with his whims, to the point he's just as much an Entertainer as he is a Missionary, though he does tend to end up on the same side as the player when things start getting really bad.
  • In-Universe Nickname: He goes by "DJ Nyarl" or just "Nyarl". Possibly because it's significantly shorter and easier to say than his full name.
  • It Amused Me: His motivation in the things that he does, regardless of the outcomes, boils down to this.
  • Me's a Crowd: He can make convincing copies of himself. These copies are, for all intents and purposes, actual physical objects, unlike Hati's copies which are merely illusory after-images.
  • More than Mind Control: Does this to Hati, making him give into his most base impulses and his desire to have Gabriel for himself, when normally Hati is content to support Gabriel from the sidelines (and hoard her merch).
  • Teleportation: His Sacred Artifact allows him to warp space. This was used twice in Chapter 4 as to teleport the protagonist to certain locations.
  • Totally Radical: The official English translation has him speak this way.
  • Troll: Like It Amused Me above, he greatly enjoys a joke at others' expense, and his sense of humor is very unkind. When someone asks to be teleported along with the protagonist, they're told the ride "only has two seats". Later on when Nyarl announces he'll teleport the protagonist and the character, Nyarl's reply to "you said it only has two seats" is "that's right, you and him!"

    Arsalan

Arsalan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arslan_3star_full.png
Guardian of Law

Voiced by: Kenichi Ogata

The Guild's leader. A boisterous lion with years of experience as a traveler, fighter and hero. He went missing since before Chapter 4, having been secretly captured by Nyarlathotep. His Artifact is a sword that produces massive amounts of oil.

  • A Father to His Men: Takes on a very caring, guiding role within the Guild. This is emphasized by him calling everyone "cubs," as he's the more experienced and parental adult lion.
  • Badass Cape: An intimidatingly regal emerald green cape that matches the gems in his sword.
  • Badass in Distress: For the majority of Chapter 4, Nyarlathotep has kidnapped Arsalan and locked him in a dungeon, causing a schism in the ranks of the Aoyama Guild. Notably, this isn't the first time Arsalan has been imprisoned: he says it's happened more than a hundred times before.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: While he doesn't seek out fights, he's enthusiastic whenever a scrap might come up he can get involved in, or at least watch. Predictably, Maria and Zabaniyya are... less enthusiastic about this.
  • Cool Old Guy: An elder of Aoyama Guild and its most revered member, and a powerful fighter on his own merit. He's a very laid-back and jolly man that just wants to roughhouse. He isn't even the least bit bothered about being imprisoned during the storyline, saying that it has happened too many times for him to care (and he even starts assigning ratings to his prisons).
  • Fanservice: His alternate skin has him chained up in nothing but a loincloth barely covering his nether regions. Also, his swimsuit is a fundoshi.
  • Mud Wrestling: He's a big fan of oil wrestling. True to the theme, multiple units feature him bare-chested and covered in oil. It's something of an annoyance for Maria, who's usually the one who has to clean up the oil.
  • No Hero to His Valet: Zabaniyya and Maria deeply respect him. This does not mean they approve of how laid-back he is, and often wish he would be a bit more responsible when it came to, you know, actually helping run the guild. For his part, he's continually trying, and failing, to get Zabaniyya to lighten up.
  • Perpetually Shiny Bodies: It's because of the oil he anoints himself with.
  • Shirtless Captives: How you find Arsalan in Chapter 4.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: His Halloween and camping skins are the only ones that make him wear a shirt.
