Main Characters

    Prince Rupert of the West/"Fitzroy"
Voiced by: Noah Galvin

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Fitz" ends up being this from Amir.
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: While he's posing as a thief, Amir asks him what "Prince Rupert" is like. Cue Rupert pulling this trope.
  • Chick Magnet: So much so that it results in an entire army of eligible bachelorettes deciding to risk their lives to help the queens rescue him.
  • The Chosen One: He and Amir both have to break the forest's curse by finishing what their fathers started and slaying each other, with the victor's kingdom ruling over all. Except not really!
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Prone to doing this towards Amir. Especially in episode 5, when he sees him strip to swim in a lake.
Rupert: (to himself) Just relax...you're just going for a swim with your friend...your beautiful, ridiculously fit friend...
  • King Incognito: He pretends to be a thief at first in order to keep Amir from attacking him for being from the West (due to the East and West being enemies).
  • Line-of-Sight Name: A variant; when Amir asks him who he is right after noting a strong disdain for the West, Rupert claims his name is "Fitzroy", after his pet dog.
  • Mistress and Servant Boy: He and Amir have a same-sex version of this dynamic early on, when he convinces Amir that he's a thief in episode 2.
  • Nice Guy: He's a good guy who wants to save his kingdom.
  • Official Couple: With Amir. By the end of season 1, they're engaged.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: Unlike Amir, he didn't obtain a lot of training, with Queen Lavinia being essentially a Hard-Drinking Party Girl.
  • Straight Gay: Confirmed to be gay in episode 4 of season 2, and not a stereotypical gay guy.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: Wise Guy to Amir's Straight Man.

    Prince Amir of the East
Voiced by: Ari'el Stachel

  • The Ace: He was trained in many, many, many, many different fields growing up, to prepare him for his future as King. Rupert is nothing short of impressed.
  • Ambiguously Brown: He has a dark complexion, as seen by his official artwork, but the exact ethnic background of the Kingdom of the East is never made clear.
  • Baritone of Strength: He has a deep voice and is a powerful man.
  • The Chosen One: He and Rupert both have to break the forest's curse by finishing what their fathers started and slaying each other, with the victor's kingdom ruling over all. Except not really!
  • Deadpan Snarker: To an extent.
  • Identity Amnesia: In season 2, his memory is taken away by Malkia of the Midlands
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Comes off as standoffish at first, but proves himself to have a good side...which of course starts to show when he bonds with Rupert.
  • Large Ham: He very loudly explains who he is when he introduces himself to Rupert.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: His preparation to rule left him without a lot of friends. Rupert fixes that for him.
  • Mistress and Servant Boy: He and Rupert have a same-sex version of this dynamic early on, when Rupert convinces him that he's a thief in episode 2.
  • Official Couple: With Rupert. By the end of season 1, they're engaged.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Played with. When Rupert reveals his true identity, we're led to believe that this trope is in play with regards to Amir, who insists that he no longer trusts him. However, it's later implied that he was doing this to hide the fact that he felt hurt by the deception and the two mostly make up (they still think they have to kill each other, though).

    Porridge
Voiced by: N/A

  • Imprinting: As noted by Rupert, he starts viewing him and Amir as his parents due to them being the first ones to see him when he's born.
  • Last of His Kind: The last dragon. Except not really.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: A fairly standard western dragon in terms of design, based on his illustrations, with a lizard-cat hybrid body and a pair of wings on his back.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: He's a baby dragon!

The Kingdom of the West

    Queen Lavinia

  • Control Freak: Referred to as such by Rupert in episode 3.
  • Enemy Mine: Atossa suggests this so they can find their sons, but Lavinia believes that the effort would be futile due to the prophecy.
  • Fainting: Does this twice for comedy, though the second time is implied to have been her faking it, as she's still conscious afterward.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: Though unlike most examples, it's more due to incompetence than being out and out evil. She has a My God, What Have I Done? moment about it at one point.
  • Lady Drunk: Loves to throw lavish parties and drink, though unlike most examples of this, it's more pragmatic than anything.
  • My Beloved Smother: To Rupert.
  • Parents as People: For all her faults, she truly wanted to keep Rupert safe.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Downplayed, as she's shocked and ends up fainting when Rupert and Amir reveal that they want to get married, but she ultimately accepts it.
  • Stepford Smiler: In her hopes to keep the Kingdom from falling into chaos, she tries to hide everything related to the Forest and the Prophecy from everyone, including her son. This, of course, backfires on her.

    Lord Chamberlain
Voiced by: Alfredo Narciso

    Sir Joan
Voiced by: Samira Wiley

    Sir Percy
Voiced by: Matthew Rhys

  • Jerkass: Comes off as rather pompous and doesn't think highly of Joan even after she defeats him in battle.
  • Praetorian Guard: The captain of the Western army. Until he's bested by Joan.

    Lady Cecily
Voiced by: Mandi Masden

The Kingdom of the East

    Queen Atossa

  • Ambiguously Brown: Like her son.
  • Enemy Mine: Forms an alliance with Queen Lavinia in the hopes of finding their sons. Lavinia wants to agree to it, but believes that due to the prophecy, it's futile.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Spent ten years constructing a Cool Airship in the form of The Phoenix.
  • Mama Bear: Flies a gigantic, dragon-shaped airship to the Western Kingdom just to find her son.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Is the first one to approve of Rupert and Amir getting married.

The Forest

    Flora
Voiced by: Laura Benanti

  • Monstrous Humanoid: She starts out as a pretty nature goddess, but reveals her true colors as a vicious, man-eating plant fairly quickly.
  • To Serve Man: Tries to eat Rupert. Amir kills her to save him.

    Barabbas the Great
Voiced by: Alfredo Narciso

  • Affably Evil: A ruthless, cutthroat crook, but far from impolite. Lampshaded when he tries to excuse his minions by noting that they "are as lacking in manners as they are in hygiene".
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He's disgusted by Cedric's suggestion to eat Amir and Rupert when they have them as captives and notes that Crazy Tooth should limit her killings.
  • The Exile: He was exiled by Queen Lavinia for putting on a play that portrayed her in an unflattering light...and also killing fifty people.
  • Large Ham: He's a big fan of the theatre. The Princes use this to their advantage.
  • Only Sane Man: Among his minions. He even has a "Surrounded by Idiots" moment.

    Cedric Strangelove
Voiced by: Richard Kind

    Crazy Tooth
Voiced by: Mandi Masden

  • Ax-Crazy: She kills almost everything she finds, to the point that even her boss is annoyed by it.

    Arachne

    The Hollow (SPOILERS)
Voiced by: Omar Metwally (King of the East) and Sean Pertwee (King of the West)

  • Abusive Parents: The two Kings try to force their sons to kill each other for their own personal gain.
  • And I Must Scream: Both kings were transformed into trees by the Forest. They both had it coming.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Each of them, to Amir and Rupert.
  • Asshole Victim: The two of them were sealed away in the forest as a punishment for their war; later, the strength of Amir and Rupert's love ends up breaking the curse and destroying them.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Of season 1. The two kings reluctantly teamed up to convince the princes to kill each other so one of the kings can rule over the kingdom alone.
  • The Caligula: To say they were unfit kings is an understatement.
  • Domestic Abuse: It's implied that the King of the East was abusive towards Queen Atossa. Both of them also threaten to murder their wives in order to coerce their sons into killing each other.
  • Disappeared Dad: They're the Kings of the East and West, sealed away in the Forest.
  • Eldritch Location: A monstrous, sentient forest that is spreading through the kingdom and contains the souls of the two warring kings.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: The King of the East has a deep, commanding voice. Clearly where Amir gets it.
  • Evil Sounds Raspy: The King of the West has a raspy, hissing voice.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Though they were enemies, both of the kings were horrible people and their war was generally seen as a completely pointless endeavor that was fueled by greed.
  • Green Thumb: A rare evil variety of this. Fitting as it's the core of an eldritch forest.
  • No Name Given: Neither of the kings have names.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: The two kings reluctantly joined forces to convince their sons to kill each other.
  • Transflormation: The two kings were trapped in the forest and turned into trees as a punishment for their war.
  • Villainous Breakdown: They have one when the curse is breaking and they're both destroyed.
  • Walking Spoiler: The true identity of the Hollow is extremely spoilerific.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: The King of the East's last words were begging his queen to save him. Given that he was an asshole who had just tried to kill her, put her son in danger and was implied to have abused her when they were married, it falls on deaf ears.

Others

    Prince Darling of the North
Voiced by: Wesley Taylor

  • Blessed with Suck: Blessed by the Fairy to have eternal good luck and happiness. At the cost of a Despair demon/creature/abomination following him everywhere killing all the people around him, including his entire kingdom.
  • Camp Gay: Acts & sounds extremely flamboyant.
