The Kongoh Family in General
- Badass Family: Even the Teen Idol sister.
- The Big Guy: Most of them.
- Half-Human Hybrid: All of the Kongoh children are all half human and half Kongoh.
- Healing Factor: Kongoh is implied to have one of these, as other characters get beaten up and they take a while to heal. Oyanana even got Put on a Bus he was beaten so badly at one point, whereas Kongoh treats getting hit by a truck as only a flesh wound, and even recovers from it by the end of the battle.
- After it is revealed that the Kongoh is a species separate from humans and other mammals, this is soon explicitly stated to be part of the Kongoh genes by Hakai Bancho, who was created from them, as he immediately reconnects his severed arm.
- Horned Humanoid: Turns out their Anime Hair is due to their pointed skulls, as revealed by Kai Kongoh.
- Rai and Soara are exceptions to this.
- I Have Many Names: The Kongoh family have been called Daiyoukai, titans and giants, in the past.
- Large and in Charge: All of the males are this, but especially Homura.
- Non-Standard Character Design: The Kongoh men are drawn in a much more serious style than the rest of the characters.
- Not Even Human: All of them are actually a race of gigantic beings that have lived since the time of the dinosaurs. In fact, they are defined as their own class separate from the basic animal classes.
- Our Giants Are Bigger: Homura, In truth, all of them can do this, but need enhancements to unlock this potential.
- Super-Strength: All of them, to varying degrees.
- Super-Toughness: They can harden their bodies to the consistency of lead, this makes their skin darken in color.
- Ultimate Life Form: Explicitly described as this, once the truth was revealed.
- Wrestler in All of Us: Their moves are very much like wrestling finishers, especially Akira's.
Akira Kongoh
The titular Bancho, Akira's quest is to take down the government's 23 District plan. Always ready to stick up for a friend and therefore stick to his principles, over the course of the series he accumulates a group of friends to help in his plot.
- Anime Hair: And he's not the worse offender, believe it or not.
- Though it turns out that his skull is shaped like that, not just his hair.
- Animal Motif: Gorilla.
- Badass Longcoat: Wears this for the entire series.
- Big Brother Instinct: Initially with Tsukimi, later to Rai. And literally to Soara, his idol sister, whom he defends at her concert.
- The Big Guy: The first one in the series.
- Calling Your Attacks: Several, but the most notable one is the Double Hammer.
- Meteo Drive, Face Crush, Wild Trailer, Diamond Circle.
- Catchphrase: "Like I care!"
- Charles Atlas Superpower: Akira has plenty of these, such as his Megaton Punch, being Made of Iron, and his Walking On Water, which can hardly be Justified by his being a towering mass of muscle... and then we see his father and realize he's Not Quite Human.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome: Akira can't help being the hero at almost all times.
- Combat Pragmatist: Even with his insane strength, Akira won't balk at playing dirty if need be.
- The Comically Serious: With his grim face, whenever he says something ridiculous, the effect is doubled.
- Defeat Equals Friendship: All of his True Companions are people he defeated previously.
- Delinquent: Averted. He constantly asserts that being a bancho doesn't mean being a delinquent.
- Determinator: There is literally nothing on Earth that will stop this guy. Including dying.
- Disney Death: Twice. First was played for laughs and the second was much more serious.
- Face of a Thug: Intensely thuggish.
- Gentle Giant: see Nice Guy below.
- A God I Am Not: At one point, Akira runs across water in front of a crowd of religious onlookers. When they make the obvious comparison and think he might be a god or a demon, Akira calls them idiots and says he just took another step every time one foot hit the water.
- Good Is Old-Fashioned: Very much so. He doesn't know how to use a cell phone, let alone email, and has some very traditional codes of behavior.
- The Hero Dies: Kongoh gets killed by Machine Bancho. There's been no evidence that he could get better, although he later does.
- Horned Humanoid: Turns out his Anime Hair is actually due to the shape of his skull.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Scolds his teammates, but cares for them deeply.
- Killed Off for Real: Briefly by Machine Bancho. But came back to life soon after and became strong enough to beat the machine that had killed him before.
- Made of Iron: Not even a state-of-the-art robot that killed him briefly can keep him down for long.
- Messianic Archetype: Aims to stop the Districts project, and by the end, he's become a true savior.
- Nice Guy: Despite his appearance, Akira is a nice guy who helps out strangers when he is not on his mission.
- Not Even Human: Akira is actually one of a race of giants called the Kongoh who all have elongated skulls and world-shattering strength.
- Real Men Wear Pink: Has an intense love of pudding.
- Red Baron: Kongoh (Diamond) Bancho.
- The Stoic: Rarely changes his expression to something more light-hearted.
- Super Mode: Violent Mode and Giant Mode.
- Super-Strength: To ridiculous levels, his first act of this in the manga is to lift a car with one arm, carrying it into an enemy hideout and then curb-stomping their boss while still holding that car. It only gets crazier from there.
Takeshi Kongoh
- Always Someone Better: To Akira.
- Anime Hair: Horned ones that his son inherited.
- Archnemesis Dad: He turns on Rai to take his political power to further his ambition of exterminating humanity.
- Big Bad: Takes this role after usurping his father, though Akira already had more personal stakes in fighting Takeshi compared to his father.
- Cain and Abel: The Misanthrope Supreme Cain to Akira's Messianic Archetype Abel.
- Calling Your Attacks: Monster Shoulder, Golden Claw, Hellbound, Double Hammer.
- Catchphrase: "Don't sweat the small stuff."
- Deadline News: Does this to get Tokyo to understand he means to kill them all to rebuild the country.
- Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Takeshi really loved his mom. When he and Akira meet by chance at her grave, Akira's ready for trouble, but Takeshi tells him that he has no intention of fighting in front of their mother.
- Freudian Excuse: The death of his mom caused him to believe that Humans Are the Real Monsters since he saw that apparently nobody cared that she died.
- Generation Xerox: Rai looks exactly like him when he was a child.
- Genius Bruiser: Somehow managed to hack into all the TV screens and phones in Japan and told the remaining Bancho of his plan and the Damocles Project. He's also the first person on-screen to defeat Akira.
- Humans Are the Real Monsters: Believes this after his mom died.
- Insult Backfire: "You should care!"
- Klingon Promotion: Defeats his father and takes over all of his political power.
- Large and in Charge: Not as big as his dad, but still pretty big until the finale.
- Omnicidal Maniac: Not as radical as Hakai Bancho, but still intends to kill off humanity.
- Our Giants Are Bigger: Becomes 300 feet tall due to Ousama Bancho's injections.
- Red Baron: Nippon (Japan) Bancho
- Redemption Equals Death: Aids Akira in saving the Earth from being destroyed as a result of their fight, by shielding his brother from the heat of the Earth's core.
- The Rival: To Akira.
- Satan: With his talk of "True Hell" and horned hair, he's definitely intended to invoke the figure, especially considering his brother is framed as a Messianic Archetype.
- The Star Scream: Always been plotting to overthrow his father.
Homura Kongoh
- Arch Nemesis Dad: To Akira.
- Calling Your Attacks: Iron Hammer Fists, Raging Lunge and Ame no Murakumo.
- Catchphrase: "Enough of this!"
- Despair Event Horizon: The death of his wife is what caused him to undergo the 23 district project.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Thought Takeshi went too far by releasing Hakai Bancho.
- Evil Old Folks: By the time of the story.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: As noted by Takeshi.
- Heel–Face Turn: After Hakai Bancho was released, he decided to rethink the whole project.
- Large and in Charge: Large is an understatement.
- Older Than They Look: Even in his youth, he looks much older than his father, Kai.
- Red Baron: Dokyu (Dreadnought) Bancho.
Kai Kongo
- Famous Ancestor: To Akira.
- Generation Xerox: Looks very much like Akira.
- Heroic Sacrifice: To seal away Hakai Bancho.
- Posthumous Character: Only a few details are mentioned by the people who knew him.
- Sealed Evil in a Can: He is the "can". More precisely, his bones are caging Hakai Bancho underground.
- Supernaturally Young Parent: At the time of his death, he looks much younger than his son, Homura, and much smaller.
Rai Kodoma
- Anime Hair: Just like his dad's.
- Badass Adorable: Though he's not exactly "adorable" considering how much he looks like a chibi-Kongoh, which lets you know in advance that he is going to kick someone's ass at one point.
- Bratty Half-Pint: Tries to act cool, but fails adorably.
- Calling Your Attacks: Double Hammer.
- Catchphrase: "Don't sweat the small stuff", inherited from his father.
- Generation Xerox: Looks exactly like younger version of his father.
- Happily Adopted: By Sasori Bancho.
- Tag Along Kid: He tags along since he looks up to his uncle Akira.
Soara Kongoh
- Action Girl: Much to her chagrin.
- Bizarre Sexual Dimorphism: Appears to be in effect, considering she's half Kongoh like her brothers but doesn't possess horns like they do.
- Cute Bruiser: Easily beats a Bancho while looking very cute. And she improvises a pop song to go with the ass-kicking, no less.
- Half-Human Hybrid: Half Kongoh and half human.
- Nice Girl: Soara is shown to care greatly for her fans, and wants to help everyone like her mother would have.
- Teen Idol: To counter her brother's badass credentials.
- The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Her father's a giant, while she's an attractive idol.
- Say It with Hearts: And with stars, too!
- Super-Strength: Runs in the family.
- Tsundere: Type B.
- Wrestler in All of Us: Her fighting style is based off of pro wrestling, with a focus on submission holds such as the Omoplata, and the Sleeper Hold, although she does use a diving knee on Dokusen Bancho.
