Main Characters

    Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III-Madrigal
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: As bad as canon!Hiccup had it, he shrugs off a lot of the hardships he had in the first film after going from zero to hero. This version isn't nearly as fine. Firstly, he was a constant target for physical and emotional abuse. Secondly, he had to rescue Toothless from a public execution, rather than being used as a tool to find the nest. After making a home in the Encanto, Hiccup is Improperly Paranoid at the thought that one false move or bad decision will cause everyone to hate him. This even leads to him trying to keep Mirabel from confessing her feelings to him under the assumption that he would somehow hurt her beyond repair.
  • Category Traitor: After he and Toothless escape Berk, Hiccup is considered this by the Vikings.
  • Going Native: While he has moments of culture shock (namely the fact that the people of the Encanto are pacifists who don't solve every problem with their fists), Hiccup adjusts to Encanto life pretty quickly.
  • The Runaway: In order to protect Toothless (and himself), he had to leave the archipelago entirely. It turns out to be the best choice he ever made, as it's what lands him in the Encanto.
  • Straight Man: To Mirabel's "Wise Guy".

    Mirabel Madrigal
  • Adaptational Comic Relief: She ends up becoming the Wise Guy to Hiccup's Straight Man, usually roping him on Zany Schemes meant to help others.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Mirabel is described as having a heart of gold, and is willing to go to any length to help someone in need. She is also not one to sit around when someone messes with her family or boyfriend. The Vikings, for example, learn this quickly.
  • Mama Bear: After she and Hiccup have their triplets, there's nothing she won't do to protect her kids.
  • Muggle Best Friend: She doesn't have a magical gift, isn't trained in warfare or weapons, and she wasn't the first human to learn how to train dragons. But she's far from helpless.

    Toothless
  • Handicapped Badass: As per canon, he lost his tail fin when Hiccup shot him down. This leaves him unable to fly unless he's wearing his prosthetic. That doesn't mean he's defenseless, though, as he's still smarter, faster, and deadlier than a majority of the dragons in existence.
  • Friend to All Children: Toothless quickly becomes popular among the kids in the Encanto, and he forms a bond with Antonio that's almost as strong as his bond with Hiccup.
  • Shipper on Deck: He's the first one in the Encanto to realize that Hiccup has a crush on Mirabel.
  • Suddenly Speaking: When Antonio gets his gift, Toothless is given a means to communicate with humans (so long as Antonio is nearby to translate). He's able to tell Hiccup that he loves him, is the key to solving Mirabel's and Hiccup's relationship problems, and even has an entire chapter where he gets actual dialogue (as he's talking with Antonio). Downplayed in that, while he can use nonverbal means of communicating with humans, Antonio is the only one who actually knows what he's saying.
  • True Companions: Hiccup and Toothless have nothing but love and trust for each other, and the dragon has made it clear that there is nothing he won't do for Hiccup.

    Karla Madrigal
  • Expy: Of Sonic the Hedgehog. Her gift is Super-Speed with a blue lightning effect, she can spin-dash for offensive purposes, her favorite food is chili-dogs, her room resembles Green Hill Zone and she can achieve a Super Mode that turns her hair blonde.
  • Super-Speed: Her gift.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Perks: Unlike the rest of her family, she'd rather use her gift to show off and have fun, instead of using it to help the community like the rest of the family.

    Pedro Madrigal II
  • Art Initiates Life: His gift is the ability to draw things into existence with a magic brush.

    Peep Madrigal
  • Fatal Flaw: She takes her future place as Candle Holder very seriously, to the point that she's constantly micromanaging what others do and having general anxiety over how she can help.
  • Generation Xerox: She’s destined to be the next Candle Handler, but as a result, she went through the same experience of not getting a door like her mother did and breaking down as a result. This time though, Mirabel is better handled to calm her down.

Encanto

La Familia Madrigal

    Alma Madrigal
  • The Atoner: Several times in the fic, she's shown trying to repair bonds with her family members after the decades of pressure her high expectations caused them. She makes more than a few mistakes, but she quickly owns up to them and is able to reestablish or repair her bonds with every member of the family.
  • Parents as People: Alma is not a perfect parent, as the pressure she put on her children and grandchildren for the sake of the family image left several of them with serious issues. But, after the collapse of Casita, she's making a significant effort to be a better leader, to the point that the family as a whole grows stronger. She still makes mistakes, but at least now she's owning up to them.

    Julieta Madrigal
  • Good Parents: Julieta is a shining example.
  • Mama Bear: While not a violent person, Julieta won't hesitate to give healing food to any child in need. After all, that's how she officially met Hiccup.
  • Parental Substitute: Having never known his birth-mother until finding her in his 20's, Julieta winds up filling that role for Hiccup.
  • Women Are Wiser: Is a constant source of good advice for members of her family.

    Augustin Madrigal
  • Amusing Injuries: This poor guy gets hurt...a lot. Played for Laughs because all he needs to do is eat one of his wife's arepas and he's good as new.
  • Good Parents: He's undeniably a good father, and is one of the first Madrigal adults to grow attached to Hiccup, especially after learning that the poor kid was abused and disowned by Stoick.
  • Papa Bear: Do not insult or hurt any of this man's children. He stands up to Stoick when they first meet; even before it's revealed that Stoick is the one who put Hiccup through so much pain, Agustin gets in front of the Viking (who's much bigger than him) and tells him he won't lay a finger on his boy.
  • Parental Substitute: He winds up taking on a paternal role to Hiccup, standing up to Stoick when he shows up to proclaim otherwise.

    Bruno Madrigal
  • Animal Lover: He's very fond of his uncountable pet rats. He and Toothless also become close pretty fast.
  • Commonality Connection: Due to both being considered jinxes in their respective villages, Hiccup and Bruno become "Self-Exile Bros".
  • Friend to All Children: He's pretty good with kids (even though a lot of them are afraid of him for a while). He is, for example, a good father to Manuel.
  • Irony: After so long accurately predicting terrible things that come true, Bruno worries that he'll break his "streak" with the first truly good vision he's had for years (that Hiccup and Mirabel will return safely from the confrontation with the Red Death).

    Pepa Madrigal
  • Anger Born of Worry: She tends to be very strict with Camilo, as he is a trickster who causes a lot of trouble. However, as revealed when he ran off with the Vikings in the Berk arc, she's strict because she's terrified of the danger he could find himself in. She's noticeably gentler with Dolores and Antonio, who don't cause anywhere near as much trouble as their brother.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While a nice woman on the whole, she can a bring a hurricane down on your head if you make her mad. For his first few days in the Encanto, Hiccup is terrified of her.
  • Good Parents: Despite occasionally being too protective or emotional, Pepa's love for her kids is undeniable, and she's more than willing to admit if she's made a mistake.

    Felix Madrigal
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Sort of. He understands Pepa's powers and emotions almost as well as she does, and is able to help her control them by saying/doing exactly the right thing.
  • Good Parents: Much like his wife, Felix is a good father to his kids, and is willing to admit if he makes a mistake (such as hating Hiccup at first due to a misunderstanding, or accidentally teaching the kids swears).
  • Nice Guy: Felix is one of the happiest, friendliest people in the Encanto (and that's saying something).

    Luisa Madrigal
  • Cool Big Sis: She's always there for her sisters, cousins, and brother-in-law, whether they need something heavy moved, an assist in flying lessons, or backup on a Viking adventure.
  • Gentle Giant: Despite being strong enough to move buildings with her bare hands, Luisa doesn't have it in her to hurt a fly, caring deeply for her siblings.
  • Head-Turning Beauty: She tends to attract a lot of positive attention with Berk's many eligible bachelors.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Luisa generally uses her superstrength for manual labour and so she doesn't have any actual fighting skills, but she's strong enough that even Stoick and Drago punching her in the face does nothing.

    Isabela Madrigal
  • Cool Big Sis: She has very much become this since the fall of Casita, as she makes it clearer how much she cares for her siblings and is willing to do anything to help them.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She and Hiccup trade insults regularly, but she reveals to him at the end of the Berk arc that she considers him her little brother. Also, her love for Mirabel and Luisa is never questioned.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After dropping her "perfect" persona, Isabella is more than willing to show what her powers can do, to the point that she was able to hold her own in a dragon raid using nothing but plants to fight. Hiccup notes at one point that she now takes being called "scary" a compliment.

    Dolores Madrigal
  • Love Triangle: She had a crush on Mariano, but he was engaged to Isabella. Happily averted when Isabella breaks up with him (via Hiccup) and he discovers that he has feelings for Dolores.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When she shouts that Hiccup, Mirabel, Isabella, Luisa, and Camilo are back, the family is shocked; Dolores never shouts.
  • Squee: When she learns that Hiccup has a crush on Mirabel, she lets out one of this because it's so cute!

    Camilo Madrigal
  • Everyone Has Standards: As much as he loves a good joke, Camilo is not on board with the twins' sadistic and deadly sense of humor.
  • God Guise: He is initially mistaken for Loki by the twins in their first confrontation, and enjoys playing on that idea even if he doesn't insist on it.
  • Latin Lover: Has a long list of exes by the time Hiccup and Mirabel get married.
  • Uncatty Resemblence: He ends up with a Changewing as his dragon; Tonta has a love of jokes and ability to disguise herself, just like Camilo.

    Antonio Madrigal
  • All-Loving Hero: The kid wouldn't hurt a fly...in fact he'd probably befriend it!
  • The Beastmaster: His ability to talk to animals is so potent that the moment it activates, Toothless "hears" Antonio and compares it to the call of an Alpha, only purer.
  • Cheerful Child: He, like his father, is one of the happiest, most positive members of the family.
  • Children Are Innocent: He is constantly taught new words by some of his animal friends...and not all of those words are nice. He's quickly told that some of those words are ones he shouldn't say.

    Valentina Madrigal
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: When she was going to tell Bruno that she was pregnant, she got distracted by two Gronkles fighting in the street and stayed to watch for a while.
  • Badass Normal: She doesn't have a gift like her boyfriend later husband or his family, but she's got enough fighting ability to take down five bandits at once, walking away with only a scratch.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Alma does not approve of Valentina dating Bruno, having always thought that he needed a gentlewoman. She admits, though, that Bruno is old enough to decide for himself who he loves, and gives the two her blessing.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Having grown up around muscle-bound chauvinists, Bruno's artistic talents and Nice Guy personality makes for a welcome change for her.

    Manuel Madrigal

    Sophia Madrigal

    Diego Madrigal
  • Attention Whore: His big defining character trait from the moment he was born was that he likes being the center of attention.
  • Hive Mind: His clones all operate under one, all of them knowing what the others are thinking. Despite this, they tend to argue and have spoken conversations with each other.
  • Like Brother and Sister: He seems to see Sophia as more of a sister than a cousin, both of them being relatively the same age.
  • Personality Powers: He's an Attention Whore who's ability is to make copies of himself.

Berk

    Stoick the Vast
  • Abusive Parents: He is called out multiple times for how badly he treated Hiccup, to the point that the Madrigals all become openly hostile to him when they learn who he is. Luckily, he gets better.
  • Adaptational Dumbass: He's still a good leader with the best intentions of his tribe at heart, but he lets his grief and emotions cloud his judgement to the point that he makes some very questionable decisions.
  • Fantastic Racism: Stoick still hates dragons at first, but even when he's trying to repair his bond with Hiccup the mere sight of a Stormcutter sends him into a rage; Gobber has to explicitly point out the differences between Mirabel's dragon and the one that took Valka.
  • Heroic Blue Screen of Death: How he reacts after Hiccup leaves, as he truly regrets disowning Hiccup and can't understand why the boy would abandon Berk. Eventually, though, he comes to realize that his mistreatment of Hiccup probably played a role in his decision.

    Gobber the Belch
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Seeing as how he was the one who gave Hiccup more care as a child than his own father, Gobber has more than a few stories from Hiccup's childhood that he shares with Mirabel (to her boyfriend's chagrin).
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Despite having a little more sense than a majority of those on Berk, Gobber has moments of this.
  • The Only One I Trust: Hiccup is still willing to talk to Gobber after everything that's happened. Gobber makes it clear to Mirabel that he's worthy of that trust, seeing as how he listens to Hiccup and gives him his blessing to stay in the Encanto (as well as supporting his relationship with Mirabel).
  • Token Good Teammate: From the perspective of the Madrigals, Gobber is the only member of the expedition from Berk that they're willing to talk to, as he at least acknowledges that he hurt Hiccup and did his best to make up for it where everyone else basically thinks they can keep treating Hiccup like before.

    Astrid Hofferson
  • Child Soldier: She's been trained to fight and kill dragons from a young age, and seems to have an unhealthy attachment to her battle ax.
  • Demoted to Extra: Astrid is no longer Hiccup's love interest.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted. After she sees how wrong her kidnapping plan was, she makes it clear that she regrets it. Mirabel, however, doesn't instantly forgive her. It takes a lot of time and patience before the two get on good terms.
  • Fatal Flaw: Astrid is proud and prone to anger. These two traits end up getting the better of her when she refuses to simply ask Hiccup politely to return to Berk (which would have most likely worked) and instead thought kidnapping and violence were the only answers (which blows up in her face and nearly ruins Berk's chances of survival).
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Thanks to the influence of Stormfly and the Madrigals, Astrid begins to loosen up and become more open-minded.

    Snotlout Jorgenssen

    Fishlegs Ingerman
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: In canon, Heather was Fishleg's Implied Love Interest who split up by the end of Race to the Edge because of her duties to the Berserker Tribe, Fishlegs moving on and winding up in a relationship with Ruffnut by the end of The Hidden World. Here, it's the opposite; Fishlegs starts dating Ruffnut, only to split because of how toxic it was for him, only to meet and eventually marry Heather after she goes to Berk for sanctuary.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite being terrified of pretty much anything threatening, he stands up to Astrid when she tries to kidnap Mirabel in an attempt to lure Hiccup to Berk.
  • Love at First Sight: He and Meatlug bond within minutes of meeting.

    Tuffnut Thorston
  • Genius Ditz: When he saw Karla's Super Form he started to explain exactly how she could fly by stating an advanced scientific theory before being silenced by Snoutlout.
  • Hidden Depths: He's surprisingly good with languages, to the point that he can translate Mirabel's insult to Stoick.

    Ruffnut Thorston
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: She and her brother qualify, as no one on or off Berk can begin to understand what's going on in their heads.
  • Domestic Abuse: When dating Fishlegs, she used him as nothing more than a domestic slave, glorified prop for pranks and Guinea pig for her more mean-spirited moments. This leads to him eventually leaving her for Heather, though Ruffnut doesn't seem all that broken up about it.

    Heather Ingerman
  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: In the original franchise, Heather was used as a spy by Alvin with the threat of her foster-parent's safety and saw her village burned down and parents murdered by the very same man he would find out was her brother. Here, her village were made into refugees by the Screaming Death, meeting and eventually marrying Fishlegs. When she meets Dagur, she has none of the baggage her canon-counterpart had and greets him like a stranger.
