The De Richet Family

     Louis Mauras de Richet

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/louis_the_council.png
Louis Mauras de Richet: The Protagonist

The protagonist; the only son and political heir of Sarah. He enters Mortimer's party whilst on the trail of his missing mother. From there things begin to go downhill for Louis and he has to prove his own ingenuity, determination, and test his luck, to survive.

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: After Louis finds out he is a demon, more sociopathic dialogue options open up.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Investing in perception and knowledge skills allows Louis to pick up on visual clues others might miss.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: He wanted an opportunity to prove himself, not the battlefield that is one of Mortimer's conferences.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Has the opportunity to do so with every member of his family: his 'mother' who kept him Locked Out of the Loop and his father and uncle who are mind-controlling demons.
  • Constantly Curious: Presumably the reason he may (depending on player choices) break into everyone's room long before any indication is given that they had something to do with his mother's fate.
  • Hypocrite: Can sometimes call out other guests on being opportunistic bastards who would lie and break promises just to see their goals realized. This will be what you'll most likely be doing through the whole game.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: He will line his pockets with found honey, drugs, manuscripts and collector coins. One could write it off as those being left there for Mortimer's guests but the servants are reluctant to give out the usable items and he can use Subtrefuge to break locks to acquire them anyways.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He comes into the island knowing nothing about his heritage, the true objective of the Golden Order and the existence of demons
Louis: I've spent all my life swimming in lies
  • Meaningful Name: The game's plot does revolve around the Louisiana Purchase, after all.
  • Momma's Boy: Elizabeth accuses him of being too spoiled and naïve to realize how shady his mother is.
  • Jack of All Stats: There's a perk for unlocking the first level of every skill, granting a 10% experience bonus from that point on.
  • Psychic Nosebleed: Occurs whenever he has one of his visions.
  • Seers: Soon after arriving at the island, Louis starts having visions of events that are taking place elsewhere on the island.
  • The Social Expert: Investing in conversational skills allows Louis to more easily manipulate the other guests into giving him more information.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: After spending most of episode 3 trying to find a way to hunt down demons, he finds out he's one himself in episode 4.
  • Undying Loyalty: His main goal remains saving his mother even if their reunion goes badly and even if he believes Elizabeth's words about her.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Asks Sarah this when he finds out she killed his real mother and adopted him. It wasn't- she genuinely cares about him.

     Sarah Faustine de Richet

Leader of the Order; an accomplished scholar and politician on France's behalf.

  • Anger Born of Worry: She didn't let Louis accompany her for a very good reason, so she is furious when she finds out he followed her anyway. Now it's not just her life that will be forfeit if Mortimer catches them.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Her torture of Elizabeth warped the girl's psyche and terrifies her to this day...yet it had nothing to do with Sarah's journey to the island and she considers Louis pedantic for bringing it up.
  • Too Clever by Half: Clever enough to find an Artifact of Doom hidden deep in the ocean...then she had to spend her whole life trying to keep it out of the wrong hands.
  • Evil Virtues: Her protectiveness of her son seems genuine, though she has done terrible things to many other people.
  • Handicapped Badass: One of her arms is a bloody stump (the result of trying and failing to open Mortimer's safe), yet she manages to steal medicine from a heavily-guarded mansion and shoot Emma.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: She is a highly rational, intellectual person, so her utterly serious assertion that demons exist shows Louis that something very strange is going on.
  • Parent-Child Team: Louis learns how to run the Order alongside her. In truth, though, she is his half-sister.
  • Power Nullifier: She knows how to mix a tincture that prevents Louis' headaches. Apparently her immunity to the Occult skill is not just for show.
  • Renaissance Man: Well-versed in everything from Biblical lore to military supplies. Many of the game's challenges come from Louis needing to prove himself worthy of following in her footsteps.
  • So Proud of You: Makes it abundantly clear that she's proud of Louis for being able to solve her clues to track her down and learn the truth about Mortimer.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: If stat uses are any indication, she really did mean to help Elizabeth by torturing her. Same with her crusade against the demons - she knows she did a lot of wrong things but regards them as necessary to curb their influence. This includes stealing nine of Mortimer's illegitimate children to keep them from his influence- including Louis.

The Golden Order

     In General

     Emily Hillsborrow

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emily_the_council_59.jpg
Duchess Emily Hillsborrow: The Femme Fatal

An English Duchess who appeared on the British social scene when she married her husband, the Duke. Secretly, she is an agent of the Order's British chapter with a list of high-value contacts and a reputation for getting things done as the 'Woman with Two Faces'.

  • Brother–Sister Incest: It's revealed that Emily and Emma are Louis' half sisters in Episode 4. If you chose to bed them when they offer it, they unknowingly committed this.
  • Deuteragonist: It's certainly arguable, but bar Louis, Emily gets the most screentime (as of Episode 3), the most character development, she pretty much accompanies Louis on his quest a significant amount of the time and even Napoleon notes that Louis seems to be following her everywhere.
  • Femme Fatale: A cynical spy with few qualms about using her wiles to manipulate people.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: One reason Emily can project such a confident facade to the outside world is because she knows her sister will always be there to support her. The Mexican Standoff between them in chapter 3 is extremely painful to her, even if she survives it.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Low cut dress? Check. Extremely desirable figure? Check. The ability to have... intimate relations with her? Check. Heck, when she (or is it Emma...?) comes to seduce you into changing to Sir Holm's side in the conference, it pretty much works for this reason alone.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Should Louis accept her seduction, discovering that she inadvertently commited Brother–Sister Incest with him, drives her to drink.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: She is deeply affected by talking about her deceased mother, and Holm's rebuilding of a certain orphanage.
"You have given the girls a wonderful Christmas gift...Thank you."
  • Secret-Keeper: In chapter 4, she can become one of the Order members who knows about demons.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Yep, she fits the first two, and for the snark, just watch her interactions with Louis in the first episode in Mortimer's secret room.
  • The Charmer: Using her feminine wiles, most definitely. It's one of her calling cards almost.
  • The Lancer: If you disagree with Deuteragonist, then this one is definitely made out. Emily (mostly by getting caught up pursuing her own goals) helps Louis out on his mission, they are both members of the Golden Order, and acts as foil to Louis' more naïve brand of investigator, though he can prove to be her superior despite this.
  • The Tease: She's sexy, and she know it, as she utilises her sex appeal for her missions.

     Emma Hillsborrow

Emily's twin sister and espionage partner. She is shot by Sarah in one of the opening cutscenes.

     George Washington

First president of the United States, and head of the American branch of the Golden Order.

  • Chess Motifs: Described as "Mortimer's king", someone Holm's side needs to neutralize.
  • Dark Secret: He is addicted to laudanum, to the degree that a doctor warns it will influence his work and social life.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Mortimer, unfortunately. He doesn't agree with Mortimer's current goal, but he stays at the conference even after nigh-everyone else has walked out.

Mortimer's Island

     Lord William Mortimer

A famously wealthy patron of the arts and sciences; host of the party Season 1 centers around.

  • Faux Affibly Evil:
  • Beneath the Mask: As cool and controlled as he is around humans, he will always be the firebrand of his family. That's why his sole Vulnerability is Etiquette.
  • Cool Old Guy: His many years of experience make him more engaged in the world, not less.
  • Mercy Kill: Apparently the reason he murdered Elizabeth.
  • Visionary Villain: He prefers Bread and Circuses to the less subtle tyranny of his family, but he still intends to be fully in control of humanity's future.

     Sir Gregory Holm

The Baron of Nottingham and a close friend of Mortimer.

  • Affably Evil:
  • Big Good: The closest thing to one in the story. He sees Mortimer's democratic plans for the attempt at pacifying the masses that they are, and works hard to thwart them.
  • Our Demons Are Different:
  • Totalitarian Utilitarian: Supports monarchist systems of government over democracies because they are "simpler", which he believes makes it easier to guide humanity in a positive direction. This is a belief shared by the rest of his daemon family with the exception of Mortimer.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He is not happy when Mortimer's goal is revealed, and leads everyone there in walking out on the conference.

     Elizabeth Adams

The supposedly stillborn daughter of Vice President John Adams and his wife and close advisor Abigail Addams. Suffering from apparent mentally illness, she was brought to Lord Mortimer's island prior to the beginning of the story for treatment and to rest.

  • Actually Not a Vampire: Despite her eerie appearanc, her pale skin and white hair are the result of her traumatic and secluded upbringing.
  • Alternate History: Although Elizabeth did indeed exist historically, she was declared stillborn in the year 1777. Here in The Council, not only is she shown to be alive and well, but she has also grown to adulthood, and is now a young woman. The reasoning for why she was declared stillborn is explored here as the main reason behind it was having been advised by Sarah de Richet, of whom Elizabeth was being treated by, so as to separate her (Elizabeth) from the rest of her family in the belief that the alleged, "evil," that inhabited Elizabeth's mother had passed into her (Elizabeth) at her birth.
  • Ambiguous Disorder: The symptoms of which are self-harming fits, muscle spasms, Lack of Empathy, and paranoia even towards those people she's reaching out to.
  • Body Horror: Her head is covered in scars that were inflicted upon her by non other than Sarah de Richet herself, in an attempt to expel the influence of Daemons within her.
  • Goth:
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Without the support of her beloved sister, Abigail, it's seems rather apparent that she would've tried to take her own life a long time ago so as to end her suffering.
  • May–December Romance: She was briefly involved in a relationship with the grey-haired Von Wollner, but she broke it off before the evens of the story.
  • The Ophelia: Incoherent, delicate, and beautiful despite her scars. Even when Louis gives her his undivided attention, he finds it hard to decipher what she's trying to tell him.
  • Terms of Endangerment: As Louis is falling unconscious from the drugged alcohol she gave him, she softly reassures him that she's going to take good care of him.

France

     Jacques Peru

A judge installed by the Revolutionary government.

  • Driven to Suicide: Years of dealing with the schemes and manipulations, only to realize that he's just a disposable pawn, lead him to put a gun to his head in front of the whole council. Louis can convince him not to go through with it, though.
  • Hidden Depths: When you first meet him, he seems nothing more than a hotheaded thug ready to beat down a defenseless woman. It's later revealed that His position as the Revolutionary Judge has caused him no end of grief and he feels used by Mortimer. He also loves his daughter dearly and advises Louis to get out of Mortimer's game before he is lost too.
  • Pet the Dog: An abusive person in general...but he will save Louis if the former gets trapped in Mortimer's study, admitting that he would want the same thing if he were in Louis's position.

     Napoleon Bonaparte

An ambitious soldier and patriot.

Other Guests

    Johan Christoph von Wöllner

A politician and friend of the King of Prussia.

  • Historical Villain Upgrade: The real von Wöllner wasn't secretly the son of a demon and was in fact deeply religious.
  • May–December Romance: He was secretly in a relationship with Elizabeth, though she broke it off before the start of the game.

    Giuseppe Piaggi

A cardinal of the church.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Despite initially treating Louis with respect, later in the game it becomes clear that he has little to no respect for him.

    Manuel Godoy

A Spanish Duke.
