Makoto Naegi and his companions.

    Makoto Naegi

Makoto Naegi

Series: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/makotonaegi.png

"You still have that shred of hope. Don't let it go to waste and forge a better future."

The main character. Makoto hails from an alternate continuity where the Tragedy hasn't happened. But he's also stuck with a rather large bout of bad luck. When incidents occur that let him learn the truth about the multiverse and his place in it, Makoto must take it upon himself and save all of existence from devastation.

Stat-wise, Makoto has the highest Luck stat growth of the cast, making him suited for debuffs and status effects. Aiding him is the fact that as a result of the ritual that got him dragged in, Makoto now has the power to summon beings to aid him in combat.

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Apparently, this Makoto once considered committing suicide at some point.
  • Adaptational Badass: Played with. Makoto gradually learns how to defend himself and master the Realmwalkers' Rune Crystals. He eventually defeats several bad guys and pulls out some miracles. After becoming a Realmwalker, Makoto has become more confident in his self.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: This version of Makoto Naegi is the same as his main counterpart. He is nice and very forgiving. But push him too far, he won't hesitate to fight back... And he knows how to fight and even more so when becoming a Realmwalker. This includes beating the living hell out of them and summoning Summons to curb stomp them - including a literal devil. The bad guys, including Hans and Solo, learn this the hard way.
  • Catchphrase: It wouldn't be Makoto if he didn't say "You've got that wrong!" at least once.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Slowly becomes this with the zanier cast.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: To Kyros and Kyuu from Rakenzarn Tales. While Kyros is meant to gradually become the strongest party member and Kyuu is a Great Detective, Makoto is neither of those. Naegi has classes that aren't very stand out and his level of strength relative to his teammates remains about the same throughout the game.
  • Covert Pervert: Has shades of this. He finds Cynthia to be very attractive (and possibly gain a crush on her) and seems to enjoy watching girls being bound and gagged.
  • Crush Blush: He gets this a few times whenever he gets some naughty thoughts. If Lemon Magician Girl is his first Summon, she teases him that she can see his dirty thoughts.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has his moments, just not on par with Lion and Raiga.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: His motivation in joining the Realmwalkers and what ultimately sets him apart from his other counterparts.
  • Determinator: His greatest strength. Even if he gets beaten to the ground, he keeps getting back up. He's just that stubborn to give up.
  • The Generic Guy: Middle of the road average all around. However, an examination of his character in chapter 4 deconstructs this, taking a look at how being considered nothing but average is rather mentally taxing.
  • The Heart: If there's anyone who can keep the team together, it's Makoto just like his original counterpart.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: His experience at playing light gun games at the arcade is used to explain how he's decent enough not to shoot himself when Lion gives him a gun to defend himself with at the start of the game.
  • The Jinx: Yeah, that "Ultimate Lucky Student" thing didn't last very long for him.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Some of Makoto's victory quotes skirt a fine line between openly acknowledging his video game status.
"Another level up! The key to every RPG! Well, most of them."
"All right, I leveled up! So, do I have to spend Skill Points or what?"
  • Nonstandard Skill Learning: Makoto gains new summons over the course of the game.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Makoto is usually very kind and forgiving, much like his prime counterpart. You know something is up when he starts to get angry, toward Solo when he had Kyoko hostage and tortured. When Solo accuses Makoto of letting his friends from his world get involved, Makoto retaliates that Solo is responsible for the entire mess. Solo begs to differ and proceeds to taunt Makoto back.
  • Sharing a Body: The summons Makoto acquires apparently hang out inside him.
  • Ship Tease: Despite not being your classic Chick Magnet, Makoto actually doesn't do half bad as he has attracted a few girls.
    • Much like their original counterparts, Makoto and Sayaka have a decent amount of teases, especially in the beginning.
    • At first, Kyoko doesn't seem to care much for Makoto until much later on when she begins to warm up to him.
    • Makoto is close friends with Aoi Asahina, but their interaction is very close to full-on Ship Tease.
    • Despite not being a romance option, Rhajat is taking more interest in Makoto. when Airi kisses Makoto to feed off from his Life Energy in a state of emergency, Rhajat seems a lot angrier than usual. When Lion thinks she's jealous, she promptly shuts him up. It happens again in another quest when the group mistake Naegi making a love confession.
    • Even a couple of his Summons are interested in him, notably Sugar and Airi. Too bad the latter is a wraith who needs to feed on life force... through the Kiss of Death.
    • Naegi's friendship with Suki is full of these, also crosses with Heartwarming.
  • Summon Magic: Makoto gained this ability as a result of his being summoned.
  • Support Party Member: Not required to be, but it's recommended for him due to his exclusive class choices and stat increases.
  • Unique Protagonist Asset: The aforementioned summoning ability.
  • Unluckily Lucky: No matter how crappy a situation, he just keeps coming out okay.

    Lion Ushiromiya

Lion Ushiromiya

Series: Umineko no Naku Koro ni

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/200px-Rio_a11_def1_5421.png

In the Umineko timeline Lion comes from, he didn't become Sayo Yasuda, so Beatrice the Golden Witch doesn't exist and the Rokkenjima massacre didn't happen. He's also been kicking it with the Realmwalkers for a while now and knows a few tricks of the trade.

Lion is a Jack of All Stats, able to use any class well, but lacking a standout stat to power certain moves.

     Rhajat

Rhajat

Fire Emblem: Fates

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/feif_icon_69.png

Rhajat comes from a world based closely off the Revelation path of Fates. She was hanging out in the Deeprealm and never got recruited into the campaign until Makoto and Lion ran into her. After seeing Makoto's powers, she decides to join the party to learn more about them.

Rhajat is the group's Black Mage. As a result, any class on her will get big buffs to magic stats, but dinky ones to health and physical stats.

  • Ascended Extra: A minor optional character in Fates, one of the main party members here.
  • Cute and Psycho: Cute? Yes. Psycho? If her casual jokes involve cursing or keeping the enemies' skulls as her trophies say anything, what do you think?
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Creepy and kinda weird, but not evil.
  • Dark Magical Girl: She's a creepy teenager with No Social Skills and possesses incredible magic powers, but she yearns for companionship and affection.
  • Glass Cannon/Squishy Wizard: She's a Black Magician Girl who dishes a lot of damages with her spells, but her defenses are weak and her HP is low.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Three to four years living by herself hasn't exactly done well for her mental health.
  • Solitary Sorceress: Invoked; her dad dropped her off there to keep her safe.
  • Stalker without a Crush: In this continuity, Rhajat becomes obsessed with Naegi after seeing his Summon Magic in action. She decides to watch him like a hawk with a mouse and follows him around during his adventure in Hoshido. However, she seems more interested in his magical abilities (and in acquiring the same kind of Summon Magic for herself) than romantically interested. Subverted, however. Rhajat gradually develops genuine feelings for Makoto, if her reactions are to believe.
  • Stalking Is Funny if It Is Female After Male: Her actions are treated more with silliness than seriousness.

     Mei-Fang

Mei-Fang

She is a Glass Cannon with weak magic due to her Arcana being busted.
