Dhala Empire

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flag_dhala.png
An empire of Dark Elves who are trying to conquer the world and defeat their High Elven rivals of Albion Kingdom.

  • Evil Empire: Pretty much their role in the story.
  • Evil Colonialist: The Dhala Empire doesn't care if they destroy or enslave the local populations of the territories they conquer if it means ushering an "age of science".
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Refreshingly, for an "Evil Empire", they aren't based off Nazi-Germany; but rather the darker colonialism of Victorian-England, Napoleonic-France, & WWI-Germany.
  • Magic Versus Science: The Empire is very interested in reclaiming magic and have made capturing the Ambrosia-Wielders priority number one. However, they have hedged their bets and are at the front of the Industrial Revolution.

Bred Regan's Unit

    Regan

Governor-General Bred Regan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bred.png
A low born man who has ascended high due to his focus on science and technology during the current Industrial Revolution. Though most of his history is a mystery, he has great hatred for the dying magic and wishes to bring the Industrial Revolution to the world.
  • Affably Evil: Make no mistake, Bred is a bad man, but he does it with style, is polite-ish, and has yet to raise his voice.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Bred's laser gun aside, this man take crazy prepared to a new level, he had already sent his scientist notes and research off site having no knowledge of an upcoming attack. Bred seem to just "know" something was gonna happen eventually and planned ahead.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Many of his peers keep bringing up that Bred comes from nothing in an Evil Empire. It seems this molded him into the Social Darwinist he is.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Bred can throw shade with the best of them.
  • Does Not Like Magic: And how! Bred considers magic to be finicky, unstable, and too unpredictable in comparison to science and technology.
  • Energy Weapon: Bred Regan pulls out a futuristic LASER GUN out of nowhere to everyone's shock, in-universe characters and audience alike and defeating a Cursed-God Mode Kai which was, up until that point, thought to be unbeatable.
  • Fantastic Drug: Mermaid's Blood he had created is made by synthesizing black pearls, and is so strong the addicts are capable of tearing each other apart to get more.
  • Freudian Excuse: He was born a commoner in an Empire that is pretty class conscience and it's clear Imperial Nobles view him as an upstart. It's obvious his upbringing and what he must have done to earn his promotions to his high positions are due to this harsh history.
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: He always has a cigar, and is a ruthless man who wants to destroy all magic.
  • Hero Killer: He orders the assassination of his long time enemy Grey Enfield.
  • Hypocrite: In two ways.
    • He claims to want equality but happily gloats and engages in victim blaming, seeing nothing wrong with conquering and enslaving people who have done him no wrong, even telling Shiera's father "Be grateful you can be of use."
    • He loathes magic, even being willing to disobey orders from his homeland so he can complete his self-assigned mission to wipe it all out, yet he uses a weapon that only exists because of magic that neither he nor his people fully understand, nor can reproduce.
  • Invincible Villain: Out of all the villains introduced, Bred consistently outwits the protagonists.
  • The Magic Goes Away: He would certainly like this to happen and is actively helping to extinguish it. In his defense, he believes, much like the Dwarves, the world will be a better place for it.
  • Magic Versus Science: Bred Regan also believes all magic is unfair or too limited, and wants all of it to be destroyed, even when his superiors would prefer to capture the Ambrosia wielders alive.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Bred's enemies can't help but accept that Bred is amazing. Despite being on the opposite sides, everyone clearly sees him as a cut above the rest of the Empirial Army.
  • Nerves of Steel: Be it dynamite, molotov cocktails in the middle of an oil refinery, or a raging monster, Bred doesn't blink!
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: Zig-zagged, Bred is a Social Darwinist who will break orders so he can destroy magic cause he truly believes science will bring true equality.
  • Out-Gambitted: The Master of this art. Bred is always at least three steps ahead of everyone
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: "If Godly power can never be known or measured by mortal minds, then science, is something that Gods never even dreamed of!". Right before he pulls out a Laser Gun and blasts a God-Cursed Kai into oblivion.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Bred was placed as Governor General of the Neria Isles; but he wasn't stupid enough to fight a losing battle and waste valuable resources over them when he already removed everything he deemed valuable from them.
  • The Social Darwinist: Bred Regan is one of these, since he climbed into the ranks of a class-conscience empire from a mere commoner to high status using only his skills. He also believes he and the empire have every right to abuse and destroy those who are conquered by virtue of being weaker than them.
  • Tranquil Fury: Being The Stoic, Bred doesn't wear his emotions on his sleeves, but when he finally met Kai who was pretending to be his deceased arch-enemy, Bred made it clear he was not happy without raising an eyebrow.
  • Villain Has a Point: It's really stretching it, but Bred does have a point that magic was an art that was finicky and hoarded by the Elite. Given his impoverished upbringing, he seems to view science as a way to "even the playing field" with corrupt Nobles and bring some form of equal power to the poorer masses.
  • Villain Respect:
    • He had this toward the Grey Enfield who he considered an arch-enemy. He was furious when he discovered someone was masquerading as him who was sub-par to his legacy claiming the "real Grey Enfield would've killed him already"
    • Bred didn't care for Kai until he used actual science to save himself who, up until that point, he despised for masquerading as Grey. Seeing his scientific intellect, he changed his mind and believed Kai was worth keeping an eye on.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Bred had Villain Respect for Grey Enfield, and thus was furious someone was masquerading as him; however, Kai's scientific knowledge made Bred consider keeping an eye on Kai rather than outright killing him.
  • The Unfettered: Seriously, nothing seems to bother this guy; nothing, losing one of his mansions, research, a city rising from the ocean, nothing phases Bred.
    • Bred goes as far as to say everything "disappoints" him.
  • We Have Reserves: Invoked, Bred doesn't like needlessly sacrificing soldiers as he sees it as a waste of resources; but he is completely fine with losing bases and colonies if need be to keep his soldiers alive.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Once again, really stretching it, but Bred Regan believes that science is morally superior to magic, since it is fair and works for all instead of being subject to the whims of gods. To that end, he wants to destroy all magic, despite the orders of his superiors.
    • Of course, there's more than a little hypocrisy here, as his "fair world" involves Social Darwinism.

    Dakris

Lady Dakris

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dakris.png
A subordinate of Bred Regan, she is very loyal to him and even takes his orders without question when they contradicted the Imperial Court's direct orders.
  • The Dragon: She's Bred Regan's Number Two and the subordinate who commands all his other subordinates in his stead.
  • Eye Scream: When Kai hits her with a water-cutter, she loses an eye.
  • Hero Killer: She hired the Ghoul (under Bred's orders) that poisoned Grey Enfield.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Almost literally. When she was kidnapping Sakra, she gloated and stabbed Kai in the face with her rapier. When Cursed-God Kai was fighting her fleet, in defense of the Nereid, he stabs her in the face with a water-cutter, just before she gets a chance to shoot him.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: She failed to collect the body and prove Grey Enfield's death which allows Kai to masquerade as him as much as he can.

    Velanto

Dr. Velanto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/velanto.png
A scientist and chemist for the Empire who's more akin to a mad scientist. He is not a nice man.
  • Brain Food: He's a Bloodsucker who eats the brains of others to obtain their knowledge.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Dr Velanto wears Scary Shiny Glasses, and has no problem using Sarin gas on his own troops if it means damaging the enemy as well.
  • The Friend No Body Likes: Even in an Evil Empire, no one is happy to see this guy.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Gains knowledge by eating the brains of his victims.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Invoked, he's in love with his own carnage!
  • Large Ham: Velanto's speech when he reveals with Zeppelins screams this.
  • Mad Scientist: A deranged cannibal who seeks to create the most destructive methods to get the Dhala Empire on top of the entire world.
  • Magic Versus Science: Dr Valento sees science as a direct defiance of magic, and wants nothing more than to use his science to face magic and win.
  • Obviously Evil: Velanto eats brains, need I say more?
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: After seeing his plans fail, he leaves and ditches his military escort to die. What a team player.
  • So Long, Suckers!: Whenever he has to flee the area, as a result of retaliation to his atrocities, or his own plans going south, he never hesitates to make a big show out of it, taunting his friends and foes alike. To date, his automatons have shown themselves talented enough to get him out of danger regardless of his theatrics.
  • The Unfettered: He doesn't let things like morality get in his way of obtaining knowledge.
  • We Have Reserves: Valento convinces the dark elf generals to shell their own men because ordering a retreat order first would warn the enemy. Then when the battle turns, he casually escapes and leaves them behind.

Others

    Gazuro

Duke Gazuro

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dukegazuro.png
Commander of a Dhala Territory
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: He's a Duke and classicist Fat Bastard.
  • Fat Bastard: He's obese to the extreme and is a cruel, petty, and vindictive person who will brutalize anyone and everyone that doesn't mete his idea of "civility."
  • Hypocrite: Decries the troops under "Major Grey" as savages for using dynamite, bombing his art collection, which he keeps right in the heart of a battle-field, and having Kai go Cursed-God mode, but how does he fight back? With an ancient war-golem, which is built on the very magic he considers savage, and attacks indiscriminately.
  • Insult to Rocks: Bred Regan mentions calling him a pig would be an insult to the animal since pigs are actually clever creatures.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Because he seized Sakra for himself, away from Bred's subordinate, Kai actually had a chance to rescue her.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Heavily classicist, beats women for not acting "highborn" enough, you name it.
  • Starter Villain: He's the first major antagonist before Kai fully commits to fighting in the war.
  • Suicidal Overconfidence: Thought his golem was unstoppable, right until God-mode Kai cracked it like a clam-shell, simultaneously impaling and drowning him, as well as turning his internal organs to paste with extreme high-frequency sound.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He slapped around some local women, on-screen, for not "being high class enough" for his tastes, to the point his second in command was openly worried that he'd break them too, but he was planning to beat the ever loving shit out of Sakra when he couldn't convince her to cough up her ambrosia for his exclusive use.

    Borel

Colonel Borel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/colonelborel.png
A Colonel trying to bring Yashimano to a deal with Dhala
  • Affably Evil: Invoked, Borel is just an officer trying to initiate a Coup in a foreign country, but he is polite (as he can be to a bunch of racist zealots) and has a high appreciation for art.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Keep in mind Borel is apart of the Evil Empire, but even he is put off with how racist and classicist the Oni of Yashimano can be. Heck, Borel is happy to be rid of Aragishi when the jig is up.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Averted, he doesn't care for Aragishi's desires of racial cleansing, genocide, and extreme classicist views. He even states Yashimano art is priceless to him.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one out to Aragishi having enough of his empty promises and blunders.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When Aragishi's plot is all but ruined, he simply leaves him to his fate admitting he couldn't stand him anyway. Heck he even gets the Emperor of Yashimano's blessing to leave the country.

    Dhala Commander

Unnamed Commander

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dhalai_commander.png
Commander of a Dhala company invading Garandoa

  • Even Evil Has Standards: The commander was a traditional soldier, so it goes without saying Dr Velanto's chemical warfare and unnecessary friendly fire horrified him.
  • A Father to His Men: He honestly cares about his men, so much that he does devastated that Dr Valento sacrificed them to a slow agonizing death of poison gas.
  • Man on Fire: He was a bit too close when Kai used Ifrit's powers to counter the Sari gas attack and wound up immolated.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: His attack on the Dwarf capitol got "Major Grey" out of a colossal diplomatic incident, allowed Kai to showcase his improved steam engine in the field of battle, and opened full diplomatic channels between Albion and Garandoa, something that Albion's been unable to do for years. Not to mention that Kai's performance proved he's worthy of Doronea's hand in marriage, and thus allowed the Dwarf king to get his own wife, to secure his throne.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Like many Dhalai, he only cares about his fellow Dark Elves as he was very rude to his Hasas assassin allies and was a little too proud that he was beating the Dwarves.

    Edu Victorius
A Captain in the Dhala military who is operating in the Sinchar Empire.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Yes, he's pretty nice for a Dhala officer, but he's still dangerous and Kai knows he can't underestimate him.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: As a fan of a Sherlock Homage character, he likes to make dramatic deductions about everyone he meets, though he's typically quite far off the mark.
  • Eyes Always Shut: He keeps his eyes closed most of the time, but opens them when he's being sneaky.
  • Friendly Enemy: He's surprisingly polite and even friendly with Kai, Aldia and the Shah Yamlaka despite nominally serving Dhala to get a foothold on Sinchar to expand their dominance.
  • I Owe You My Life: Because Kai helped save him and his men during the Sinchar Indicdent, Edu feels he owes Kai.
  • Realpolitik: His main goal is always what's best for the Dhala Empire. Other things like justice and ideals are not important except in how they can serve his nation. This is why he's quick to abandon his Nomad allies in favor of Shah Yamilka that he previously offered to help overthrow when the political calculus changed.
  • Secret-Keeper: Like Bred Regan, he know Kai and "Major Grey" are one in the same and a Marebito, but hasn't acted on this information yet.
