Recurring Characters

St. Bernadette's students

Voiced by: Various

The students of St. Bernadette's Catholic School.

  • Cheerful Child: For the most part.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Despite being a collective example of The Determinator, they are just as good at realising they're not as good as they think they are and/or when the competition is simply better. In the first film, they get this off Mr. Maddens more than anyone else.
  • The Determinator: With Mr. Poppy's encouragement, they seek to achieve what they set out to do in each movie by any means necessary.
  • Hidden Depths: It's amazing what they are shown to be truly capable of in each movie whether they are talented or not.
  • High Hopes, Zero Talent: Not that they or Mr. Poppy ever let that stop them and they usually end up inspiring the people they're trying to help.

Oakmoor students

Voiced by: Various

The students of Oakmoor School and main rivals of St. Bernadette's.

  • Ascended Extra:
    • Eleanor after she is left behind in the first sequel.
    • Barnaby in Nativity Rocks!.
  • Demoted to Extra: By the time of the 3rd Film, their appearance is limited to briefly encountering Mr. Shepherd and Lauren at the local Shopping Centre then beating St. Bernadette's in Bradley Finch's Flash Mob Competition, only to miss their flight to New York due to St. Bernadette's stealing their boarding passes.
  • Training from Hell: They're clearly more talented and have more of an aptitude for what they're doing than their St. Bernadette's counterparts but that's largely due to the harsh and demanding teaching methods of Gordon Shakespeare.
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: After Roderick Peterson has his St. Cuthbert's lot perform the song they were intending to sing in the first sequel, they ask the St. Bernadette's students to perform in their place, this wins them the A Song for Christmas competition.

Desmond Poppy

Voiced by: Marc Wootton

An unqualified teaching assistant at St. Bernadette's and the oldest nephew of the Headmistress Pat Bevan.

  • Blatant Lies: He's full of these and actively encourages the students to do likewise.
  • Character Development:
    • Usually for the purpose of supporting the St. Bernadette's students and whoever is teaching them.
    • In the first sequel, he willingly stands up to and defies his Aunt when she refuses to allow St. Bernadette's to enter A Song for a Christmas and even tells Donald Peterson he's turning into his father.
    • Particularly so in the second sequel when he has to support Lauren Shepherd to the point of becoming a Parental Substitute to her due to her father's memory-loss.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He seems to have a better idea of the St. Bernadette's students' lack of talent in the first sequel.
  • The Fool: Mr. Maddens sums it up when he goes to Mrs Bevan with his initial assessment of him.
  • Friend to All Children: Even it is largely as a result of being a Manchild.
  • Hidden Depths: For a Manchild, he is certainly adept at organising Nativity Plays.
  • Idiot Hero: He always emerges as this.
  • Manchild: A trait he shares with his brother Jerry.
  • The Millstone: To his Aunt Pat in the first sequel
  • Parental Substitute: To Lauren in the second sequel.
  • Put on a Bus: In Nativity Rocks!, he is mentioned to have moved to Australia to find his Aunt Pat when his brother Jerry comes to St. Bernadette's looking for him.

Gordon Shakespeare

Voiced by: Jason Watkins

A former peer and friend of Paul Maddens and Jennifer Lore and now a Performing Arts Teacher at Oakmoor School.

  • Attention Whore: He simply cannot bare the idea of anyone other than himself and his students being the centre of attention.
  • Blatant Lies: He and his students go to St. Bernadette's to spy on them for the purpose of finding out what they're doing in their nativity play.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: He isn't even mentioned in Nativity Rocks! but his replacement is no less of a pompous Jerkass.
  • Demoted to Extra: By the time of the 2nd sequel.
  • The Determinator: Purely for the sake of beating St. Bernadette's...and everybody else.
  • Entitled Bastard: He expects preferential treatment and resorts to childish tantrums when he doesn't get it.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He willingly leaves a student of his (called Eleanor) behind in the middle of nowhere and doesn't bother looking for her but he draws the line when he realises his own (former) hero willingly abducted a baby and locked a bunch of children, including Eleanor, inside a snow globe.
  • Friendly Enemy: He's become this to Mr. Maddens.
    • This continues in the first sequel when he asks St. Bernadette's to take Oakmoor's place in A Song for Christmas.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He idolizes Roderick Peterson in the first sequel, this becomes a Broken Pedestal once he finds out what his hero is really like...
  • Hypocrite: He's so patronising to everyone but won't stand for similar treatment from others, in the first sequel, he grows so tired of being patronised by Roderick Peterson and the St. Cuthbert's choir that he willingly asks St. Bernadette's to perform in Oakmoor's place just for the sake of winning A Song for Christmas.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: He is convinced he is better than everybody else and forces this mentality upon his students but simply cannot stand the idea of anyone outperforming him, least of all, St. Bernadette's.
  • It's All About Me: Mr. Maddens actually describes in the prologue that he loves himself more than anything else.
  • JerkAss: His general attitude towards his students and everybody else.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Although he very rarely shows it unless it gives him a chance to show off
  • Manchild: Unlike Mr. Poppy however, he's an Entitled Bastard and an overgrown Spoiled Brat.
  • Sadist Teacher: Given how hard he is on his students, he even leaves one of them behind without a second thought in the first sequel.

Patricia Bevan

Voiced by: Pam Ferris

The Headmistress of St. Bernadette's in the first two movies and the maternal aunt of Desmond and Jerry Poppy.

  • Berserk Button: Her nephew becomes this in the first sequel as his and the students' antics make it all the more harder for her to hire a permanent replacement for Mr. Maddens.
  • Put on a Bus: In the second sequel, she has moved to Australia and is replaced by Mrs Keen and by the following sequel, Desmond has done likewise to look for her just when her younger nephew Jerry has come to Coventry looking for the both of them.
  • Stern Teacher: Well-meaning but not afraid to put her staff and students in their place if they don't respect her decisions.

Angel Matthews

Voiced by: Jessica Hynes

Introduced in the first sequel judging the Song for Christmas Competition, returns in Nativity Rocks!.

  • Creator's Pet: In-Universe, it's obvious from the moment Roderick Peterson and the St. Cuthbert's choir arrive for the A Song for Christmas competition that she thinks it's a Foregone Conclusion they're going to win. She even gives Roderick suggestions on how to improve his act while they're watching the other entries together.
  • Meaningful Name: Guess what part she plays in Nativity Rocks!...
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She hires Emmanuel Cavendish to organise Coventry's entry in the Rock Opera Competition and quickly regrets when she arrives in Coventry to find the whole city ready to kick him out and he proceeds to insult her as well. She promptly sacks Mr. Cavendish and initially excludes Coventry from the competition altogether but quickly relents and puts Mr. Johnson in charge.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver: See Meaningful Name....

Clara Keen

Voiced by: Celia Imrie

Takes over from Mrs Bevan as the Headmistress from the 2nd sequel onward.

Characters introduced in Nativity!

Paul Maddens

Voiced by: Martin Freeman

A former Drama school student who is a teacher at St. Bernadette's.

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: He is forced to adopt such a facade once his lie about Hollywood spirals out of control though it's largely to shut Mr. Shakespeare up.
  • Always Second Best: To his former friend Gordon Shakespeare when it comes to directing School Nativity Plays and just about everything else.
  • Anything but That!: He is placed in charge of directing the St. Bernadette's Nativity play, which is the last thing he is prepared to do after his disastrous previous attempt, he changes his tone when Mr. Shakespeare finds out and proceeds to lie to him about Hollywood.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": He does this to Mr. Poppy whenever he loses his temper with him.
    • He often uses the "Be Quiet!" variant on his students.
  • Deadpan Snarker: His general demeanour, particularly towards himself and his students.
  • Fired Teacher: Mrs Bevan sacks him when he and Mr. Poppy proceed with their Nativity Play against her wishes.
  • The Grinch: He decided he hated Christmas after Jennifer left him as he was about to propose to her and his previous attempt at directing the St. Bernadette's nativity play received a bad review. His students are aware of this.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: In Jennifer's absence, his only friend is his pet dog Cracker.
  • Idiot Ball: Granted he hadn't really got to know Mr. Poppy (but well enough to know he was a Manchild) at the time but he really should have found somewhere private for him to tell his lie about Hollywood to Mr. Shakespeare, certainly somewhere where it would have been harder for Mr. Poppy to eavesdrop.
  • Morality Pet: Cracker to a certain degree as at one point, he asks her to critique his music for him.
  • Pet the Dog: His pet dog Cracker.
  • Put on a Bus: Mr. Poppy keeps a whole cupboard full of mementos relating to him which Mr. Peterson discovers in the first sequel.

Voiced by: Ashley Jensen

  • Calling the Old Man Out: After his father tries to reprimand him for calling Roderick out.
  • The Determinator: He becomes this over the course of the movie, given the obstacles he, Mr. Poppy and their students encounter on their trip to Wales.
  • Nervous Wreck: Especially with regards to becoming a father as a result of years of living with being in his twin's shadow and their father's Disappointed in You attitude towards him.
  • Put on a Bus: All we see of him in the 2nd sequel is his photo inside a snow-globe.
  • Sibling Rivalry: With his twin.
  • The Reason You Suck: He finally stands up to his father and brother in the climax and even to Angel Matthews since he's so riled.
  • The Un-Favourite: His father has always seen him as a disappointment and makes no secret about it.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: The ride down the rapids causes to him to recall how his father used to use potentially drowning him and Roderick as a means of toughening them up.

Roderick Peterson

Voiced by: David Tennant

Donald's identical twin brother, a famous conductor/composer and now choir master of St. Cuthbert's College.

  • Big Brother Bully: He may be Donald's twin but has never resisted an opportunity to bully him.
  • Broken Pedestal: Gordon Shakespeare sees him as his hero but gradually goes off him after tiring of his relentless patronising.
  • Death Glare; The members of his choir do this when they see the Oakmoor students for the first time.
  • Like Father, Like Son: When it comes to being a Jerkass.
  • Jerkass: Even more so than Gordon Shakespeare, though this is partly due to how his father raised him.
  • Mistaken Identity: Mrs Bevan and Mr Poppy both mistake him for Donald.
  • Parental Favoritism: Don't think his father makes any secret about it...
  • Sibling Rivalry: He's always had the upper hand.
  • Slasher Smile: He does this to Donald after having him, Mr. Poppy and the St. Bernadette's students locked in a giant snow globe and abducting the baby they'd been looking after.
  • The Determinator: Given his will to win the 'Song for Christmas' competition...
  • The Stoic: He is totally unfazed about anything that is sent to try him over the course of the movie, that is, until he is harassed by Mr. Poppy and Mrs Bevan who both mistake him for Donald.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Such is the combination of him being both The Determinator and a Jerkass that he abducts a baby and locks a bunch of school children inside a giant snow-globe.

Sarah Peterson

Voiced by: Joanna Page

  • Berserk Button: Her father-in-law praising Roderick and belittling Donald.
  • The Determinator: Despite being heavily pregnant, she rides a helicopter for the purpose of trying to find Donald.
  • Happily Married: To Donald, inspite of her father-in-law's condescending attitude.
  • Only Sane Woman: When she and her father-in-law start to worry about what has happened to Donald since they don't know that he, Mr. Poppy and their students are lost.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: She subjects her father-in-law to this when she finally tires of him praising Roderick and putting Donald down.

  • Parental Favoritism: Towards Roderick, both Donald and Sarah later chew him out for this.
  • The Reason You Suck: Has constantly subjected Donald to this, it comes back to bite him eventually.
  • So Proud of You: After years of admitting this to Roderick, he finally does the same to Donald after becoming a grandfather.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Naturally, he does this to Donald when he finally turns up, Donald straight up calls him and Roderick out for being a bad father and brother.

Eleanor

Voiced by: Eleanor Grant

An Oakmoor student who is left behind on the way to A Song for Christmas.

  • Brutal Honesty:
    • Mr. Poppy asks her if she thinks he's ugly and she does, the St. Bernadette's students decide to help her anyway.
    • This is also averted however as she doesn't think to tell St. Bernadette's about Oakmoor sabotaging the roadsigns to lead them astray.
  • Potty Emergency: For herself and her peers which is what leads to her being left behind.
  • The Woobie: Mr. Shakespeare leaves her behind during a Potty Emergency and doesn't bother sending out a Search Party for her, even St. Bernadette's are afraid to trust her at first.

Characters introduced in Nativity 3: Dude, Where's My Donkey?

Jeremy Shepherd

Voiced by: Martin Clunes

An Ofsted inspector, widower and father to Lauren, he goes to inspect St. Bernadette's but loses his memory when Archie the donkey kicks him in the head.

  • Heroic BSoD: Briefly goes through one when he reunites with Lauren and Mr. Poppy, having got his memory back.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Once he's got his memory back, he can't help it once he reunites with Lauren and Mr. Poppy, he quickly snaps out of it though...
  • My God, What Have I Done?: A lonely walk around New York City gradually refreshes his memory, at which point he finally realises what his memory-loss and Bradley Finch's scheming is costing him....
  • The Ditz: He becomes this after losing his memory, he can't even remember his own daughter at first.

  • The Reason You Suck: He does this to Mr. Poppy once he finds out Mr. Poppy's been lying to him.
  • The Un-Favourite: Even before his memory-loss, it's clear Sophie's family would prefer her to marry Bradley Finch instead of him.

Lauren Shepherd

Voiced by: Lauren Hobbs

Jeremy's young daughter who's Christmas Wish is to have a new mum.

  • Break the Cutie: She's beyond consolation when her father tries to leave her and Sophie with Bradley Finch. It gets worse when her father goes for a walk around New York without her prior knowledge.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: She tearfully ends up doing this to her father when he tries to leave her and Sophie with Bradley.
  • Cheerful Child: Until her father loses his memory.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She's never seen without them.
  • Missing Mum: Her mother is deceased and she constantly has to point this out to her father following his memory loss.
  • Parental Substitute: Sophie is about to become her step-mum and Mr. Poppy becomes a sort of surrogate father to her while her real father is suffering from memory-loss.
  • The Woobie: She gradually descends into this as the strain of trying to refresh her father's memory in time for his and Sophie's wedding takes its toll. To make matters worse, her would-be step-family would prefer her would-be step-mother to marry Bradley Finch and don't seem to care about how she would feel about this as she doesn't even like Bradley.

Sophie Shepherd nee Ford

Voiced by: Catherine Tate

The soon-to-be wife and step-mum to Jeremy and Lauren, ex-girlfriend of Bradley Finch.

  • Happily Married: To Jeremy, once he regains his memory and heartily apologizes to her.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Her family would prefer her to marry Bradley Finch and they even go as far as emphasising this through song once they find out about Jeremy's memory-loss.
  • The Woobie: Both her and Lauren when Jeremy attempts to leave her after letting his own memory-loss and Bradley Finch's scheming get the better of him and her own family pushing her to marry Bradley.

Bradley Finch

Voiced by: Adam Garcia

The judge of the Flash Mob Competition and Sophie's ex-boyfriend.

  • It's All About Me: A nicer example than most of the others in the franchise but he still inflates his ego when he wonders why Sophie left him in the first place.
  • Jerkass: Downplayed slightly compared to other examples in the franchise but still relentlessly tries to get Sophie back once he finds out about Jeremy's memory-loss.
  • Near-Villain Victory: He and Sophie are at the altar by the time Mr. Shepherd regains his memory.
  • The Favourite: To Sophie's family.

Characters introduced in Nativity Rocks: This Ain't No Silent Night!

Doru

Voiced by: Brian Bartle

A young Syrian refugee who has fled to England with his widowed father.

  • Break the Cutie: After all he's been through already, overhearing Barnaby's parents saying he can't stay with them upsets him so much that he runs away.
  • Hidden Depths: He really can sing and dance.
  • Missing Mum: His mother is deceased as his father points out when they arrive on English shores.
  • Not Blood Siblings: With Barnaby
  • Only Sane Man: It takes an intervention on his part to stop an argument between Jerry Poppy and the new Oakmoor teacher.
  • Parental Substitute: Miss Shelly the social worker and Jerry Poppy.
  • Sibling Team: Of the Not Blood Siblings variety with Barnaby and Jerry.
  • The Quiet One: Until he meets the St. Bernadette's students and later, Jerry and Barnaby which is understandable, given what he goes through beforehand.
  • The Un-Favourite: He joins the St. Bernadette's students for the Rock Opera auditions but is excluded by Emmanuel Cavendish.
  • The Woobie: He has lost his mother, he and his father were forced to leave their native Syria due to hostilities, they travelled to England on a raft with other refugees, he and his father are forced to separate upon arriving on English shores, he has to spend the night sleeping rough on the back of a pickup truck, he ends up in a strange town (Coventry) with strange people, he is rejected by all potential adoptive families (mainly because of Jerry's Manchild antics), excluded from the Rock Opera by Mr. Cavendish and overhears Barnaby's parents saying he can't stay with them, is it any wonder he gets so upset as to run away to Shropshire (because he's been led to believe that's where his father is)?

Jerry Poppy

Voiced by: Simon Lipkin

The younger brother and nephew of Desmond Poppy and Mrs Bevan.

  • Disguised in Drag: After Emmanuel Cavendish excludes him and Doru from the Rock Opera auditions, he tries to worm his way back in by disguising himself as Barnaby's nanny.
  • Expy: Of his brother Desmond as Simon Lipkin plays that character in the musical based on the original film
  • Friend to All Children: Just like his big bro but especially so to Doru and later to Barnaby.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: He is beyond consolation when he discovers both his Aunt and brother have moved to Australia after coming all the way to Coventry to find them.
  • It's All My Fault: He blames himself for Doru not getting adopted.
  • Kick the Dog: He is often on receiving end of this, most notably so when he is excluded from the ':Rock Opera'' auditions, the new Oakmoor teacher calls him a loser.
  • Manchild: Just like his big bro but he at least acknowledges when he's gone too far, given that such antics scupper Doru's chances of getting adopted.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: His attempt at Disguised in Drag is easily seen through by Mr. Cavendish.
  • Parental Abandonment: He believes his mother did this to him after she was sacked as the Cavendish family's charlady in response to him being framed by Emmanuel for stealing a brooch belonging to Mrs Cavendish.
  • Pet the Dog: He (begrudgingly) befriends a stray dog whom he names Dodger and generally treats dogs better than Emmanuel Cavendish.
  • Sibling Team: Of the Not Blood Siblings variety with Doru and Barnaby.
  • The Unfavorite: He and Doru are excluded from the Rock Opera auditions by Emmanuel Cavendish.

Emmanuel Cavendish

Voiced by: Craig Revel-Horwood

The main antagonist of the film.

  • Ambiguously Gay: His interactions with Bunny imply this as he refers to him as "Darling" at one point.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Potentially being excluded from the Rock Opera, or at least playing the part of Herod, is this for him.
    • He pushes this for everyone in Coventry and even his secretary when he openly insults the City in general.
  • Big Brother Bully: Played with as he and Jerry Poppy were Not Blood Siblings but when they were kids, Jerry's mother was the Cavendish family's charlady and he bullied Jerry no end. To make matters worse, he stole a brooch belonging to Mrs Cavendish and framed Jerry for it. This led to Mrs Poppy being sacked and Jerry's (perceived) Parental Abandonment.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • Upon arriving in Coventry, he claims he is glad to be back.
    • He claims he's trying to save the Rock Opera ... by taking parts away from children!
  • Everyone Has Standards: His secretary Bunny initially agrees with him on pretty much everything when it comes to the auditions for the Rock Opera but won't stand for him openly insulting the city of Coventry, that is, suggesting the Luftwaffe should have destroyed it.
  • Foreshadowing: His decision to make Herod the focus of the Rock Opera is only the first sign of the Jerkass that he really is.
  • It's All About Me: By far the worst example in the franchise. He dismisses everyone in Coventry as not being up to the standards he expects from people wishing to take part in a Rock Opera and resolves to just do the whole show himself.
  • Jerkass: To everyone except his secretary who agrees with him on almost everything apart from insulting an entire city.
  • Kick the Dog: He threatens to kill Dodger the dog if he doesn't get to at least play the part of Herod in the Rock Opera.
  • Professional Butt-Kisser: His secretary Bunny is a complete agreeable sycophant to him but will draw the line at insulting the entire city of Coventry.
  • The Reason You Suck: He gradually adopts this general attitude towards to everyone in Coventry and the City itself. This comes back to bite him when everyone in Coventry (including his secretary) throws him out of the Rock Opera.
  • The Unfavorite: He initially accepts the St. Bernadette's students in the Rock Opera auditions but excludes Doru and Jerry.
  • Yes-Man: His secretary, until he insults Coventry.

Barnaby Hargreaves

Voiced by: Rupert Turnbull

A privileged but lonely boy who attends Oakmoor.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Jerry keeps getting his name wrong.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Going hand-in-hand with the above, Jerry Poppy has several of these for him, such as 'Barnacle' and 'Bumblebee'.
  • Berserk Button: Jerry repeatedly getting his name wrong.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Given the usual standards expected of everyone at Oakmoor, it's implied he has no friends there, in addition to being an only-child so he wastes no time in extending the olive branch to Doru and Jerry.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: His father has a silent version of this when observing other families at the airport and immediately returns to Coventry for the Rock Opera.
  • Not Blood Siblings: He comes to see Doru and Jerry as such when they stow away at his home.
  • Not Now, Kiddo: His Workaholic parents have little if any time for him and often leave him in the care of a Nanny.
  • Sibling Team: Of the Not Blood Siblings variety with Doru and Jerry.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: He's constantly pining for his parents' attention.
  • Workaholic: Both his parents are this in a nutshell.

Mr. Johnson

Voiced by: Daniel Boys

A teacher at St. Bernadette's.

  • Anything but That!: He immediately refuses to have anything to do with the Rock Opera upon hearing about it.
  • Berserk Button: Emmanuel Cavendish trying to take all the parts in the Rock Opera for himself. Incidentally, he is the first to stand up to Mr. Cavendish when he realises what a Jerkass he is and takes over the Rock Opera auditions with immediate effect.
  • Expy: Of Mr. Maddens from the original film as Daniel Boys plays that character in the Musical.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: He has heard about Desmond Poppy and his reputation so naturally, when he meets Jerry Poppy, his reaction is ''Not another one!"
  • Pet the Dog: He begrudgingly allows Jerry and Dodger to stay with him for one night after initially throwing them out even though he's allergic to dogs.

Miss Shelly

Voiced by: Helen George

A social worker who helps move Doru to Coventry.
