Main Characters

    Mew
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tc_96_mew.png
The Mew from Pokémon: The First Movie. Shows up suddenly in the Ketchem household after Ash brings Mewtwo inside and has stayed ever since.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Despite Mew's carefree demeanour, it is still one of the strongest Pokémon. In addition to kicking your ass, Mew can teleport objects inside you or trap you inside a timeout bubble.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: Mew is often subject to this, sometimes even after The Reveal that it is the 'Twos' mother.
  • Force Feeding: Does this to Mewtwo, sometimes even going so far as to TELEPORT food into his belly!. Justified, as Mewtwo often refuses to eat.
  • My Beloved Smother: Constantly mothers the Mewtwos.
  • Parents as People: Mew is trying to make up for lost time after losing the twins, but its Cloudcuckoolander demeanour and Immortal Immaturity nature obstructs this.
  • Pokémon Speak: Unlike the 'Twos, Mew only ever says its name. However, in some strips, such as when Mew talks to the 'Twos about its connection to them and how it behaved after losing its babies and finding them again as Mewtwos, Mew's Pokémon Speak is translated for the audience.
  • That Thing Is Not My Child!: Initially, Mew's reaction upon first encountering Mewtwo on New Island. Seeing for the first time what the humans had done to its child, it couldn't accept that this was the same being and angrily dismissed Mewtwo as nothing but an imposter using its child's body, hence its taunting about how the clones could never match up to the originals. It was only after their fight and Ash's near-death that Mew realized it was wrong, much to its shame.

    Mewtwo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tc_96_mew2.png
The Mewtwo from Pokémon: The First Movie. After Ash finds him injured in a field and takes him in, Mewtwo ends up staying at his house and it all goes downhill from there.
  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Mewtwo almost always wears a scarf. Justified, as it started out as a way to differentiate himself from Newtwo.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Mewtwo was one of Mew's stolen children and hasn't been at peace with himself like Newtwo is.
  • Afraid of Doctors: Mewtwo dislikes humans, especially humans in lab coats, to the point where after being injured from fighting with his sister, Ash asks Prof. Oak to come to his house without a lab coat instead of taking either of the 'Twos to the Pokémon centre. He does get better though, as shown by him showing up at Oak's lab with the premature Pig. Justified, as doctors tend to resemble the scientists in the lab where he was raised.
  • Amusing Injuries: Even as one of the most powerful Pokémon, Mewtwo is not immune to this:
  • Character Development: Mewtwo not only warms up to everyone, but also begins to give and accept affection and his beliefs on the purpose and capabilities of his species are also turned on its head. He also becomes less aggressive towards those who provoke him, such as the Honchkrow who attacked Pig.
  • Guilt Complex: Has one (with Mew) over killing Ash the first time they met. Memories or no memories, Ash already forgave them both, which makes the psychic Pokémon feel even worse about what transpired.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Saves Huey from an exploding Shadow Crystal, causing him to get hit in the shoulder instead, turning him into ShadowTwo.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Mewtwo just wants to live a normal, peaceful life instead of being hunted down by humans or being used for his powers.
  • Lies to Children: Mewtwo tells Huey that he's green because his mother ate too many lum berries while pregnant with him. Huey accepts this without question, and later complains to a very confused Newtwo that she should have eaten more red berries so he could be red.
  • Meat Puppet: Mewtwo becomes this to the Shadow Synergy shard embedded in his shoulder, as it sends him on the hunt for Gaia Energy and has him destroy anyone who gets in his way.
  • Moral Guardians: Has become very concerned with Ash's recklessness as a Kid Hero. He repeatedly has to send the boy home or outright ordering Ash to Go to Your Room! to prevent further danger to his life.
  • Papa Wolf: For both his daughter Pigment and his nephew Huey. Even before he accepts the role of Pig's father, he is most certainly willing to protect her, breaking into a lab to rescue her and later defending her against several Honchkrow. In his last moments before the Synergy Stone takes over, he warns her to run.
  • Parental Substitute: Despite his initial discomfort with the existence of a naturally-born Mewtwo, he essentially serves as a father figure to Huey and cares about him deeply even though he's not great at expressing it.
  • Parents as People: When Mewtwo ends up taking care of Pig, he is shown to REALLY struggle.
Mewtwo: What am I even doing?
  • Perpetual Frowner: Is the biggest offender of the 'Twos in this regard, with an even grumpier frown than Newtwo or Pig. Even when Mewtwo has no reason to be miserable, he still has a surly look. This got to the point where Ash and Huey joke about his "uncle face".
  • Platonic Co-Parenting: With his sister, Newtwo. The two of them raise Huey and Pig in the same house and share parental duties.
  • Prone to Tears: Not currently, but in flashbacks to his brief time as a baby mew, as well as a few non-canon what-if scenarios where he and his sister were rescued after their mutation but while still babies, he is shown to have been the more fussy of Mew's twins.
  • Running Gag: Mewtwo's "tender tummy", which renders him unable to stomach much else than bitter or spicy foods.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: By far the grumpier of Mew's twins, and for good reason when he was experimented upon by scientists and used by Team Rocket.
  • Sink or Swim Fatherhood: Mewtwo ends up having to father Pig after discovering her in a lab, having been cloned from his blood that was collected after he was attacked by humans. Safe to say Mewtwo has very little idea what to do but thankfully everyone else pitches in to help.

    Newtwo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tc_96_new2.png
The Mewtwo from Pokémon: Genesect and the Legend Awakened. She joins Ash and Mewtwo after Mewtwo encounters her while she fights a Fearow.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Newtwo, like Mewtwo, was one of Mew's stolen children. While she is more at peace with herself, she still carries some emotional baggage because of that.
  • Anxiety Dreams: Newtwo has one where her son, Huey, is captured and tortured in a lab by Team Rocket while she can do absolutely nothing about it.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's the more motherly, patient, and kindly of Mew's twins. Newtwo also has a sense of humor and isn't above jokes. That said, she will kick your ass into the next Generation of Pokemon games, if you hurt her family or mock her.
  • Empty Nest: Newtwo begins feeling this as Huey grows and starts to depend on her less; for example, she is noticeably saddened the first time he is able to sleep on his own during a thunderstorm without cuddling with her. She tries to hide this, not wanting to smother her child, but even Mewtwo picks up that it's affecting her.
  • Healing Factor: Newtwo learns Recover in order to survive being run through by ShadowTwo's Laser Blade. However, with this being a serious injury and Newtwo being close to death, she is unable to completely heal her injury.
  • Luminescent Blush: Newtwo gets flustered VERY easily when given compliments.
  • Made of Iron: Newtwo is able to take an even bigger beating than Mewtwo is. When the two fight, even though Newtwo is left lying on the ground, it's Mewtwo who passes out first.
  • Mama Bear: To both her own son Huey and her niece Pigment. She'll protect Huey no matter what, sometimes to the point of attacking people like Ash, and will leap into a fight over something as small as putting him in snow. She's also protective of Pig, though not to the same extent as her brother.
  • Parental Substitute: To Riolu and later Loaf the Hisuian Zorua. She also took on a parental role for Pig while Mewtwo was having his crisis.
  • Platonic Co-Parenting: With her brother Mewtwo. She cares just as much for her niece as she does her son, and shares duties with Mewtwo.
  • Percussive Therapy: Invokes this on Mewtwo and herself by taking him somewhere remote and getting him to fight her when he loses it after The Reveal that they're Mew's stolen children.
  • Running Gag: Newtwo being unable to handle anything remotely spicy.

    Huey
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tc_96_huey.png
Newtwo's son, who was born after Newtwo encountered a special flower that made her pregnant. He's also a Shiny Pokémon.
  • Bad Liar: Huey's usually very open with his emotions, so on occasions where he's upset but wants to pretend everything is fine he firmly falls into this trope. During the arc where a trainer tried to capture him, he at first tries to be vague about what he was doing when his mother interrogates him on why he was out late, but quickly panics that she'll figure it out and starts acting very awkwardly.
Newtwo: Well be a little more punctual next time. We're still doing this in baby steps, remember?
Huey: (standing with his arms out like he's flat against a wall, wide-eyed and sweating) YES. (flees)
    (beat panel)
Mewtwo: So he's obviously hiding something.
Newtwo: Of course, I'm not an idiot.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Fills a big brother role for his cousin Pigment, and will not hesitate to put himself physically between her and danger, such as when he shields her with his own body when she is blown back by Shadow Mewtwo's uncontrolled psychic blasts, despite being badly injured himself at the time.
    • Far into the future, he literally saves his newborn little sister Lilac's life by resuscitating her after she was seemingly stillborn.
  • Break the Cutie: Is left shocked and traumatized when, during a training battle with his uncle, he accidentally causes a Shadow Synergy crystal to explode and a shard is embedded in Mewtwo's shoulder. The fact that Mewtwo received the injury when pushing Huey out of the way of the shard only makes him feel more guilty.
  • Cheerful Child: Huey is a happy-go-lucky child. Probably helps that he is raised in a happy and peaceful environment by Newtwo.
  • Childhood Brain Damage: Played for Laughs with toddler Huey falling down the stairs as a baby, leaving him unable to tell his mother apart from MewtwoAndMe's Feral!Newtwo.
  • Extremely Protective Child: Huey does NOT want his mother to be sad. He's willing to go toe-to-toe with a possessed Mewtwo after Newtwo is stabbed.
  • Height Angst: Played for Laughs when adult Huey, hugely proud to have grown up to be the tallest of his family, learns that some of his alternate-universe second-generation Mewtwo counterparts are even taller. His expression upon this revelation is described by TC as "unrelenting passive-aggressive rage".
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: His darker moments tend to involve this; during the Shadow Mewtwo arc, for example, he furiously berates and blames himself for the accident that got Mewtwo infected and being unable to help his injured mother, even wishing that the Shadow Synergy crystal had infected him instead because "at least then there would have been more competent Mewtwos around to solve it."
  • First Snow: Huey's first experience with snow has Mewtwo brutally throw him face-first into the snow, expecting him to realize that it's not that magical. Huey says "Magic snow!" anyway as Newtwo angrily tackles Mewtwo.
  • Martyr Without a Cause: As he grows older, Huey starts demonstrating a troubling tendency to take it upon himself to ensure that his family (especially his mother) is happy, even at his own expense.
    • After learning his mother's backstory and all the pain she had gone through, he intensely vows to himself that he’ll make sure she’s never that sad ever again. He starts trying to hide his own problems so as not to make her upset, and even fantasizes about changing time to stop his mom and uncle’s kidnapping and transformation into Mewtwos even though this would mean he was never born.
    • During the Shadow Mewtwo arc he harshly blames himself for everything that happens, tries to insist on being the one to battle and purify his uncle over his mother’s objections and even agreeing with her that he’s not ready for such a fight, and expresses the wish that he had been infected instead (even though, as Pig points out to him, that outcome wouldn’t have made Newtwo any less devastated).
  • Meaningful Name: Huey has a different hue due to being shiny.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Huey, despite using male pronouns, likes to wear dresses on occasion.

    Pigment
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tc_96_pigment.png
Mewtwo's premature daughter, who was cloned in a lab using his blood after being attacked by humans.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Technically cousin, but Pig definitely has a bit of this dynamic with Huey. Especially when they're in their "child" and "teen" stages, respectively, she gets a kick out of using her ghost powers to mess with him.
Huey: Oh no, we lost Pig in the crowd. (shouting over crowd) HUEY IS A STUPID IDIOT BABY!!!
Pig: (pops up from within crowd) Yeah he sure is.
    Lucario: Hey, that worked.
Huey: Not really how I thought it would...
  • Deadpan Snarker: Clearly takes after her Da in this regard.
  • Feel No Pain: Subverted. Pig's initial reaction to breaking her arm is one of complete nonchalance. Then the shock wears off and she reacts appropriately.
  • Ironic Name: Pig's full name is Pigment, because she lacks pigment.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Pig shares Mewtwo's grumpy demeanor and wears scarves like he does.
  • Little Miss Badass: Pig is remarkably strong for her age, able to ward off ghosts in the household and hold her own against her own father if necessary. She's able to take on DemonTwo and the monsters that inhabit The Backrooms. Although its played with in that those two scenes are of dubious canonicity and are possibly meant for the sake of a gag. Further downplayed at one point, as when attacked by a Honchrow as a toddler, she is utterly helpless against it.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Much like her father, she rarely shows much emotion beyond apathy.
  • Straying Baby: As a infant and toddler, she has a tendency to float off, including through walls, due to her inability to control her powers at the time. It got to the point her father had to put a bell on her just to be able to keep track of her. See her entry under The Runaway
  • The Prankster: While it's sometimes hard to see behind the stoic/disinterested character she usually projects, Pig has a definite prankster streak that shows up from time to time, from which not even her father is safe. Possibly influenced by the small amount of Gengar DNA in her genetic makeup.
  • The Runaway: Pig sometimes wanders off to see Amber and a group of Ghost-Types she has since befriended. When Mewtwo simply dismisses these friends as "imaginary", Pig runs off AGAIN to find the Ghost-Types and ask them how they can make Amber visible to Mewtwo.
  • Shout-Out: Pigment's body color is a callback to the original color palette used in Mewtwo's design in the games and Pokemon cards.
  • When She Smiles: Pig's default expression is very deadpan and impassive, so on the rare occasions where she gives a genuine, sincere smile, even Mewtwo can't keep up his aloof façade in the face of his heart melting.
  • Youngest Child Wins: She's far stronger than Huey, who is gentler by nature, able to overpower her older cousin with minimum effort.

Side Characters

     Ash Ketchum
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tc_96_ash.png
A young man on a journey to become a Pokémon Master. His rescue of a badly wounded Mewtwo would set up the events of the rest of the series.
  • Kid Hero: He follows his heart, which unfortunately, has led him into danger on numerous occasions. Mewtwo cannot comprehend how he's still alive after his exploits, before ordering the boy to stay in his room.
  • The Nicknamer: Christens Newtwo with her name as a way of distinguishing her from her brother. He's also the one to coin Huey's name.
  • Out of Focus: Doesn't really show up much anymore outside of celebratory events due to being in Galar.
  • The Prankster: Has often played some light-hearted jokes at Mewtwo's expense, which usually results in Amusing Injuries.

     Delia Ketchum
Ash's mother.
  • Fluffy Tamer: She scolds Mewtwo and Groudon with no repercussions.
  • Good Parents: Delia passes down her wisdom to Newtwo and Mewtwo, who were struggling to raise Huey and Pigment respectively.
  • Seen It All: When she walks in to see Ash feeding leftover curry to Mewtwo, her reaction is to tell him that she'll make some fresh curry for him instead.
  • Spanner in the Works: She planted the flowers that got Newtwo pregnant with Huey, from which a lot of the comic's events stem from.
  • Team Mom: Quite literally, even offering Mewtwo and Newtwo advice and solace when it comes to caring for Pig and Huey.

     Professor Oak
The local Pokémon Professor.
  • Mister Exposition: He exposits, among other details, Pig's hybrid typing and Synergy.
  • Not So Stoic: The sight of Mewtwo knocking at his door asking for help with stabilizing Pig after rescuing her from the lab gives him pause.
"Well. This is not how I thought my night would go."
  • Pet the Dog: Always takes his lab coat off whenever treating Mewtwo, as scientists working on him is a big Trauma Button for the Pokemon.
  • Secret-Keeper: Promises Mewtwo that the secret of his existence will be kept.

     Lucario
Ash's Lucario. He started out as a Riolu, with a vendetta against Mewtwo but an adoptive mother-child relationship with Newtwo. Now all grown up, he serves the role of Huey's best friend.
  • Aura Vision: He's a Lucario after all.
  • Not So Above It All: He tries to be tough and serious, but he often finds himself sucked into the antics of the main characters.
  • The Rival: Viewed Mewtwo as one when he was a Riolu, mistaking Mewtwo's dark aura as a sign that he was evil.

     Smoothie
A Spiritomb Huey and Pigment found on their "Offscreen Disney Musical Adventure". It mostly serves as background decoration, but it has come in handy a few times.
  • Creepy Good: It's a giant vortex of swirling souls with a permanent Slasher Smile, but it's entirely harmless. Smoothie even saved Pig from flying away when her ghostly phasing powers went haywire.
  • Silent Snarker: Apparently.
Mewtwo: You didn't even TRY to stop [Pigment] from leaving?
Smoothie: *stays inside its keystone and says absolutely nothing*
Mewtwo: (glares) I don't appreciate your tone...
  • Team Pet: Referred to by TC as an "Interactive Lawn Ornament".
  • The Unintelligible: Despite not making a peep on panel, Huey can understand Smoothie perfectly. TC clarified that any of the cast can understand it, but Huey's the only one who actually listens.

     Loaf
A Hisuian Zorua who stumbled across Newtwo while she was napping and promptly got herself adopted.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: A ghost born from an angry, lingering soul, but Loaf is mostly content to hang around her family.
  • Flat Character: She's a cute baby ghost fox that views Newtwo as her mother. That's about it.
