The Protege and potential party members

    The Protege

The Protege

The young hunter who was taken in by the famous soldier Maria. During the prologue, Maria and her group are tasked with protecting the citizens of the village of Mado from the Grapplers. Sadly they are wiped out by the commander of the Grapplers Ted Broiler and the protege is the only survivor. After getting nursed back to health by the girl named Irit, the protege embarks on a journey to destroy the Grapplers and avenge Maria.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: As usual. The default name which the comic that came with the limited edition of the DS remake goes with is Ken.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: This is initially the protege's status in Swan City due to Garcia's framing him.
  • Sole Survivor: Twice over, of losing their family back in their hometown and of Maria's group during their ill-fated mission to protect the citizens of Mado from the Grapplers.

    Axel

Axel

The punky mechanic who was jailed for tinkering with one of the Grapplers' tanks. He can be rescued from the cell by the protege and join the party.
  • The Engineer: His ability to repair vehicles as a mechanic is essential in tank fights.
  • Optional Party Member: In both original and remake, the players may skip him if they wish.

    Misica

Misica

The female soldier who is determined to fight the Grapplers. Unfortunately, her ability is not as great as her bravery as she gets repeatedly killed off, having to be revived by the main character. Eventually acknowledging that her strength is insufficient alone, she joins the party.

    Pochi

Pochi

A dog found in a complex west of Hatoba, considered to be the strongest of all the dogs in the complex.

Friends and Allies

    Maria

Maria

A famous soldier who is the mentor of the protege. Her group gets destroyed by Ted Broiler during a mission and she dies protecting the protege. Avenging her is one of the main goals of the game.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Gets killed off at the beginning, which sets the protege on his road to take the fight to the Grapplers for vengeance.
  • Red Baron: Maria the Immortal.

    Irit

Irit

The girl who nursed the main character back to health after he was gravely wounded by Ted Broiler. The player can potentially marry her, which results in a premature ending.

    Beihab

Beihab

An Old Man who has an obsession with hunting down the monster known as U-Shark.

    Dr. Eva Grey

Dr. Eva Grey

The doctor who used to work for the Grapplers but ran away as she was no longer willing to take part in their atrocities.
  • The Atoner: She would rather die than go back to Devil Island to continue the Grapplers' experiments.
  • Last Request: Before dying, she asks the party to defeat Bias Brad, the true leader of the Grapplers.
  • Properly Paranoid: She is avoiding contact with anyone while hiding in Delta Rio as she fears that Cagliostro, one of the Grappler Emperors, is after her. She is entirely correct and the hero has to reveal her location to him in order to progress the main story.

    Marilyn

Marilyn

The popular showgirl from Delta Rio. Although very pretty, she is said to be a rather lousy dancer and care only about money.

    Saki

Saki

A diver well-known for her talent as well as her beauty.—-

    Cecil

    Dr. Bart

The Grapplers

    General
An evil organization that is terrorizing the setting of Metal Max 2. They regularly go on manhunts and have no problem wiping out any settlements that resist.

    Skunks

Skunks

One of the Grappler Emperors in charge of guarding the Grapple Tower. He used to be a normal monkey at Monkey Center but he and other monkeys were taken by the Grapplers for their twisted experiments.

    Cagliostro

Cagliostro

One of the Grappler Emperors who acts as Intelligence Information Officer. He is searching for Dr. Eva Grey who escaped from the Grapplers.
  • The Dreaded: Dr. Grey is terrified that he is after her.
  • Faking the Dead: In the DS remake, he does this after you win the first fight against him. Failing to spot this will result in having to fight him again on foot.
  • Master of Disguise: He is initially disguised as a sailor when you meet him in Delta Rio.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: He was already this in the original, in Reloaded; his HP is nearly twice as much as it was in the Super Famicom version atop a new set of moves he never used in the original.

    Bull Frog

Bull Frog

One of the Grappler Emperors who controls the Devil Island, blasting anyone who dares to approach Bias City.

    Ted Broiler

Ted Broiler

The commander of the Grapplers and the strongest of the Grappler Emperors. He shows up at the beginning of the game where he mercilessly slaughters Maria's group and gravely wounds the protege.
  • Bad Boss: Does not take kindly to failures as his underlings who ran away find out the hard way.
  • The Heavy: He is the one spearheading the manhunts while Bias Brad is busy conducting experiments in Bias City.
  • Kill It with Fire: Those dual flamethrowers aren't just for show.
  • One-Hit Kill: In the DS remake, Ted can use Forbidden Syringe which has a chance of instantly killing a party member if successful and this is only if your party members are wearing flame resistant gear.
  • Marathon Boss: Due to his healing abilities mentioned below, his boss battle ends up being this.
  • Mascot Villain: His striking appearance, ruthless murder of Maria, and difficulty in Boss Battle make him one of the most memorable villains in the franchise.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Ted "Broiler". Fitting for someone who loves burning his enemies to death.
  • No Cure for Evil: Completely inverted. During the boss fight, he completely refills his health once when it is depleted to less than half. In the DS remake, not only does he do this twice; but he also uses Over Drip early on in the battle, which regenerates his HP by small amount every turn at the beginning of the battle.
  • That One Boss: Befitting his rank as the strongest of the Grappler Emperors

The Leader - Spoilers are unmarked!

Bias Brad

"When I was struggling with terminal illness... I had a revelation at the dark depths of the abyss that is despair! I, the most valuable consciousness on this Earth, must not be lost! I should be eternal! At the least, that's what I should strive for! No matter what sacrifices need to be made, I must become eternal! This sublime desire of mine must come to fruition! Any who stand in the way of it are to be eliminated! Death is ideal for any such fools! Not a single person can stop me, can stop the Eternal Vlad!"

The true leader of the Grapplers. He was once a respected businessman and scientist who used his intellect and wealth to save the environment. However, when he contracted an incurable illness, he became obsessed with avoiding death and created the Grapplers to gather guinea pigs for his experiments to become immortal in the post-apocalyptic world.

  • Big Bad: He is the one whom the party has to defeat in order to put an end to the Grapplers.
  • Brain Uploading: He did this as a human in order to cheat death.
  • Egopolis: The name of his base and Very Definitely Final Dungeon? Bias City.
  • Energy Beings: His second form as Trans Brad. His third form: Vlad Plasma, is this in the remake as well.
  • Evil Overlord: The post-apocalyptic version of it.
  • Fallen Hero: As his backstory reveals, he was once a beloved public figure dedicated to protecting the environment.
  • Freudian Excuse: Bias Brad's reason for causing the regional apocalypse is because he was afraid of death and was angry at the prospect of seeing his genius being defeated by an incurable disease that he contracted. As a result, he wanted his intellect to remain unmatched and thus reduced humanity to near-extinction with nuclear fire which was then followed up with a status quo that was cruelly established and maintained through his human hunts so as to prevent anyone else from reaching or surpassing his level. He died but saved himself by uploading his mind to a super computer, claiming that death only took a disease ridden corpse.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: As one of the people who made Noah, he is indirectly responsible for the Great Annihilation that destroyed much of the old world.
  • Healing Factor: His Cyclotron. You have to find a way to turn it off before engaging in a battle against him.
  • Immortality Immorality: Has no problem committing manhunts, slavery, and inhuman experiments in his quest for immortality.
  • Mad Scientist: One of the worst in the series. It is due to his experiments that the world of Metal Max 2 is a much darker place than the first game's.
  • One-Winged Angel: Becomes a being made of pure energy for the second (and third in the case of the DS remake) phase(s).
  • Villainous Breakdown: As the party defeats his forms, he goes through this realizing that he is going to die and there is no escape from death this time.
