Other Characters

    Yamada Sanjuurokurou
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/untitled_224.png

The extremely talkative, touchy and energetic Hitomi-chan. The vulgar, rude, violent, but gave me a handmade bento tsundere Ai-chan. Who should I choose?

- Sanjuurokurou, giving himself too much credit.

Sanjuurokurou is a classmate of Shousuke, Ai and Hitomi at Kisai High School. An Ordinary High-School Student, he is under the (very mistaken) impression that Ai and Hitomi are in love with him.

Introduction: Ch. 182, uncredited; formally introduced in Chapter 198

  • Ascended Extra:
    • A meta example, as his name itself implies that he is indeed an actual Ascended Extra (see the entries on Line-of-Sight Name and Meta Guy).
    • He is shown during Katai Ai's introduction in Chapter 182, being used as a hostage to the delinquent girls that are seeking quarrel with her. He is made a named character in Chapter 198.
  • Butt-Monkey: In addition to being the butt of the joke for being a Ridiculously Average Guy just like Tadano, it goes a step further with no one being able to remember his name properly. His name is even purposely mispelled in the Official Popularity Poll results.
  • Entertainingly Wrong:
    • He thinks that both Ai and Hitomi are in love with him, but in reality, his contact with them is due to circumstantial situations involving the very handsome Shousuke.
    • He assumes that Tadano actually getting his name right was his way of giving Yamada his blessing to date his sister.
  • Foil: Yamada is a Ridiculously Average Guy just like Tadano, but the primary difference is he lacks Tadano's self-awareness and is unable to read the room. He's quick to assume that Shousuke considers him to be his best friend (he doesn't) and that both Ai and Hitomi must be in love with him (they aren't).
  • The Generic Guy: He's even more of a fly on the wall than Tadano is. His entire gimmick consists of the fact that he's barely two hairs over being just a background character.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: Parodied by the author himself. His name is a combination of a common family name (Yamada) and the number 36, implying that he's barely past being a stock character.
  • Meta Guy: Lightly parodied due to his tendency to fall into Rose-Tinted Narrative. He looks at his social life in terms of tropes, seeing himself in the center of a Love Triangle with Ai and Hitomi, and views Shousuke as his love rival. The primary issue here is he hilariously over-inflates his actual role in the story.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: None of his group of friends think of him as a friend, but rather, a head to fill up a seat. Out of him, Hitomi, and Ai, Shousuke considers him the least annoying.
  • Nice Guy: He's a good kid, notwithstanding his plainness.
  • Overly Narrow Superlative: Sanjuurokurou thinks that Shousuke invited him to his family's dinner because he considers Sanjuurokurou to be his closest friend. In reality, the caption reveals that Shousuke considers him to be his least annoying classmate.
  • Punny Name:
    • Yamada Sanjuurokurou means "Yamada the Thirty Sixth", parodying his plainness and his status as a stock/background character. A Running Gag involves people calling him by a different name/number like Nanajuuro-kurou (seventy-sixth), Saburou (three, or third), Nijuunirou (twenty-second), Rokujuukykyuurou (sixty-ninth), Niijuuhachirou (twenty-eighth), Juugorou (fifteenth) and Yonjuuichirou (forty-first).
    • His name also implies that he's just the thirty-sixth classmate in Shousuke, Hitomi, and Ai's classroom.
  • Ridiculously Average Guy: Parodied, but in a different aspect than Tadano. Whereas Tadano is the trope exemplified, Sanjuurokurou has just an average name (Yamada) attached to a number (36), implying that he's barely past a Nominal Importance in the story.
  • Rose-Tinted Narrative: He is in one concerning his romantic possibilities with Ai and Hitomi.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: He thinks that every action Ai and Hitomi make is an attempt for them to court him.
  • Unknown Rival: Hilariously, to Shousuke. He is a foil to Shousuke in status and appearance (as in, having neither), and most of his "successes" in love are due to a residual effect from Shousuke's wake.

    Chocolate

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chocolate_komisan.png

Voiced by: Urara Takano (Japanese), Georgina Sánchez (Latin American Spanish)

Let me say this first. I hate being touched by humans. Those ill-mannered humans would just try to touch us without ever considering our feelings.

The unlikeliest member of Komi's list of friends, Chocolate is the cranky lady boss cat of a Cat Cafe that Komi visits with Onemine and Otori. Chocolate is the only cat in the Cafe who is not afraid of Komi.

Introduction: Chapter 82

  • Caught Monologuing: She's given to sit, seething at the humans that visit the shop. She gets irritated when she's interrupted.
  • Humans Are Bastards: As she dislikes being touched by people, she disdains every person that comes to the shop, except for Komi.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Though she argues that she hates humans, her preference for Komi proves that she craves physical attention too.
  • Not So Stoic: Despite making fun of Komi's wasted efforts to approach the other cats, she starts feeling bad for her and approaches Komi by herself.
  • Perpetual Frowner: She sports one mean scowl, high and mighty.
  • This Is My Human: She approaches Komi and Komi alone, whereas no other person can even approach her.
  • Tsundere: She actually likes to cuddle up to Komi, but makes it seem to her underlings that she's doing it out of pity.
  • She's a Man in Japan: in the English dub she's voiced by a male actor and is referred to with male pronouns.

    Mila Burgundy
A friend Rei made while in America. Eventually, she becomes friends with Komi, as well.

Introduction: first appearance Ch. 177; formally introduced in Ch. 280

  • Embarrassing Nickname: "Tyrannosaurus", due to having once bitten someone she didn't like.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: They are always covered by her hair.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: After crashing at Komi's house for the night, which Komi allows on the sole basis that they are friends, Mila reproaches her for it, arguing that she shouldn't just let anyone who claims to be a friend into her house since they might try to rob her.
  • Man Bites Man: How she got her Embarrassing Nickname. She bit a kid once and was never allowed to live it down. She's also noted to bite people who make fun of her dad.
  • New Friend Envy: Inverted; Mila is jealous of all the old friends Rei has in Japan, which is compounded by the language barrier leaving Mila unable to communicate with them and befriend them, so she ditches Rei and goes to spend the night at Komi's house. Mila is aware of how selfish this makes her, however, and she eventually breaks down in tears over it.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Absolutely nobody lets her forget that she bit a kid in the past.
  • Scary Teeth: Mila's teeth appear to be filed down.
  • Tsundere: She acts abrasive towards people but mellows out after Rei's persistent attempts to befriend her.

    Kawai Rami
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rami_7.png

Tadano's former middle school crush whose rejection of him following his elaborate confession stunt was the start of him becoming a normal person. She ended up attending Yuushuushin Prep School which gets roped into a summer study camp with Itan High due to Setoka's actions and crossing paths with Tadano again.

Introduction: first appearance Ch. 32; formally introduced in Chapter 377

  • Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better: While speaking with Kawai about Tadano, Komi brings up her school accomplishments of high grades and being a fast runner. Kawai counters with "Mine are better," and "I'm faster." Both facts are confirmed by accompanying info boxes.
  • Ascended Extra: She first appears in Chapter 32 in a flashback before she makes an actual appearance in the present-day over 300 chapters later.
  • The Beautiful Elite: She's as beautiful as Komi is and has similar features, as such demonstrating that Tadano Has a Type despite his denials.
  • Beneath the Mask: She presents herself as an ideal School Idol to her classmates, but that doesn't mean she's devoid of many funny qualities; she's shown to do kissy faces when no one is watching her, her Girl Posse once revealed that she has a strange infatuation with raccoons, and her solution to try to stay with both Komi and Tadano was polygamy, all with a straight face.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She absolutely LOSES IT after she finds out that Komi is dating Tadano, though the situation is fortunately resolved, letting her drop this phase.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Even though she actually returned his affection, Kawai rejected Tadano so that he would mature as a person. She sulked about it for three days afterward.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Considering she lost her parents in a traffic accident and had to put up with her aunt, uncle, and cousin's neglect, it's easy to see that behind her confident facade lies an isolated girl desperately clinging on to Tadano.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Once she and Komi have a proper talk and she begins taking baby steps in getting along with others, she mellows out and begins showing more and more of her goofy side.
  • Didn't See That Coming: She surmised that Tadano would have had his life together after her rejection, but she did not foresee that Tadano would have gotten himself a knockout gorgeous girlfriend like Komi.
  • Entitled to Have You: How Kawai sees Tadano. She believes that she's the only one worthy of being his girlfriend and goes to great lengths to become a superior romantic partner to any would-be rivals in order to justify this. When she learns that he's already dating Komi, Kawai wastes no time letting her know how much better she is than Komi and outright asks her to break up with Tadano so that she can date him instead.
  • Fatal Flaw: Pride. Kawai's insistence on doing everything on her own leaves her unwilling to ask for assistance when she finds herself unable to face a challenge with her strength alone.
  • Foil: To Komi. They are both the School Idol of their respective schools and their looks are similar enough that it's easy to tell Tadano Has a Type. On the other hand, while Kawai is very capable in a multitude of areas in which Komi can't measure up to her, Komi is not afraid of relying on her friends when she can't do something on her own. Kawai quickly ditches her team during the summer camp quiz once the questions trick them into answering too early, only to end up losing on her own once the topics change to trivia on the rest of the students. Komi, on the other hand, ends up winning because she has a team of friends (and Shiina) backing her up. Furthermore, both were treated to a genuine moment of kindness by Tadano in the past which caused both to develop crushes on him. But while Komi from that point on slowly began to grow out of her shell with his help, Kawai's desire to be with Tadano ironically ended up isolating her further from people.
  • Genius Ditz: Overlapping with Hidden Depths. One of the reasons why her classmates tolerate her is the fact that, on top of being overachieving and gorgeous despite being proud and unrelenting, she's also kind of a moron, which makes her relatable and cute.
  • Girl Posse: Kawai thinks of the girls who are always following her more as "lackeys" than actual friends. They are aware of this and accept it, as stated in the Genius Ditz entry.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Kawai's rejection of Tadano in middle school was meant to force him to outgrow his Chuunibyou phase. While he did, Tadano also developed an uncanny ability to read people in order to not go through such humiliation again, which allowed him to befriend and eventually date Komi. This distresses Kawai since she still harbors feelings for Tadano.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It's very apparent that she's envious of Komi for being both beautiful and Tadano's girlfriend.
  • Hate at First Sight: She starts harboring dislike for Komi the moment she lays eyes on her beauty, and this is before she finds out that she's dating Tadano. She drops this in later chapters.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Kawai rejected Tadano so that he would grow out of being a Chuunibyou even though she actually loved him. Three years later, she is shocked to find that he is dating a drop dead gorgeous girlfriend after moving on from Kawai.
  • Ineffectual Loner: One of Kawai's greatest flaws is that she's quick to discard anything that she sees as unnecessary or irrelevant to her goals. This comes to a head during the final day of the summer camp, where once the rest of her team is unable to help answer the trick questions, Kawai coldly insists on finishing the quiz alone even though it's a team competition. Then the topic for the questions changes to trivia about the rest of the students from the summer camp; much to everyone's confusion, Kawai proves unable to answer a single question.
  • It's All About Me: Kawai has never once taken into consideration Tadano's actual feelings, and values her own above everyone else's, believing that she's entitled to be his sole romantic partner simply because she loves him.
  • Marry Them All: When she loses to Komi, she resolves to woo both Tadano and Komi to be with her, as well as half-seriously stating that she'll become Japan's Prime Minister in order to introduce legislation to legalize polygamy so that she can marry them. Still, she starts making an effort to befriend them both, which is a good start.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Her attempts to help a lost child are hardly any better than Komi's: she loudly shouts the child's name in an attempt to get the attention of her mother, which only makes the poor little girl get scared and cry even harder.
  • Obsessively Organized: Kawai always organizes her daily schedule ahead of time with the objective of being maximally efficient. This extends to planning her future with Tadano, both before and after they start dating (because they will, eventually).
  • The One That Got Away: Tadano asked Kawai out in middle school and she rejected him because she found his Chuunibyou phase to be lame. While this affected Tadano to the point that he became the Ridiculously Average Guy he is today, he eventually managed to move on; Kawai, however, never did, and still pines for Tadano three years later.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Her rejection of Tadano's confession in middle school by calling him lame for him being a Chuunibyou caused him to become the Ridiculously Average Guy he is at the beginning of the story, which consequently was what let him befriend Komi. It turns out that she'd rejected him despite actually returning his feelings because she genuinely found his Chuunibyou phase lame and wanted him to grow out of it.
  • Sore Loser: She doesn't take losing the summer camp quiz contest particularly well: she disappears for an entire day, waits until the rest of the students have taken the bus home and walks alone towards the beach, leaving Komi with the impression that she intended to drown herself.
  • Worthy Opponent: Chapter 389 reveals that the real reason behind her failing grade towards Komi was because she saw in her someone who, for all her skills, could possibly best her at something.

    Recurrent and other Gag Characters

There are a multitude of single-note characters in the manga which are used once or twice according to the situation. The majority being single gag characters, they are hereby listed with their name and subsequent Punny Name explanation, where available:

First Year Classmates

Amami's friends, a couple of first-year classmates of Komi and Tadano who lend advice to Amami:
  • Ushiroda Eiko - "Shadow girl behind you", a recurring character that appears sometimes, but wasn't introduced until later. Her name is a reference to that fact.
  • Maeda "Jukujosukii" Hoshio - His nickname meaning "I love older women", a sleazy boy who has little compunctions admitting that he Likes Older Women.

  • Otaku Yuuji, Seikimatsu Toshio and Samurai ("Seikimatsu Toshio" meaning "end of the century man", a reference to Fist of the North Star, as he looks just like a villain from there) are first-year classmates of Komi and Tadano with very distinctive, stereotypical appearances akin to their names. Samurai in particular is part of the "Komi Imperial Guard".

Second Year Classmates

  • Badou Kaname - "Truly a mother", a second-year classmate of Komi and Tadano who assists Najimi's Test of Courage at Katai's home. Apparently, he mothers his classmates like a naggy mom. He was forced by Najimi to introduce himself imitating Beat Takeshi.
  • Fuwa Masuko - "Girl who gets fluffier", another classmate of Komi at the Test of Courage, who is portly. She was forced by Najimi to introduce herself imitating a robot.
  • Odoka Shizuka - "Did I startle you?", a classmate who is dressed as Sawako from The Ring for the Test Of Courage; she appeared earlier during the Cultural Festival, acting as a ghost in her class' haunted house.
  • Ohai Shuki - "Love Boobs" - A classmate who likes boobs, serving as a judge for a couple of class competitions. She was forced by Najimi to introduce herself by becoming hyper.
  • Fushima Saku - "Rotten work", A classmate otaku who is a Yaoi Fangirl. She was forced by Najimi to introduce herself by rapping.
  • Toutoi Son - "Respect" (ironically) or "Revered Son" - A second-year classmate who resembles Gautama Buddha. Unlike his appearance, he has a raunchy personality. He was forced by Najimi to introduce himself by telling an embarrassing anecdote. According to Tadano, Toutoi is the heart and soul of Class 2-1.
  • Fukushi Natsu - "Likes summer uniforms" - A second-year classmate who serves as a judge for the Summer Uniform competition in class.
  • Sukida Lili - "I like yuri", a classmate who furiously ships girlXgirl couples and expresses disdain towards pretty much any other subject.
  • Baba Kingyo - "Horse riding goldfish", a girl with the appearance of a fish, who is unwaveringly enthusiastic, and who always says "Daz right!!".

Third Year Classmates

  • Emoyama Yuragi - A girl who likes Emo thingsnote . She bears witness to many poignant happenings around school, reacting with profound delight.
  • Ogiya Hafuru - "(baby babbling)" - A third-year classmate who wears a baby bib and pacifier and speaks only in baby-like babbling.
  • Omakawa Machi - "waiting to be called cute" - A girl obsessed with being cute and being referred to as such.
  • Nanoda Kyara - "nanoda character" - A girl who says "nanoda" to the point of excess.
  • Kyouno Koto - (an anagram of "old Kyoto") - An overly formal girl.
  • Bosa Towa - "dilly-dallying" - A rather spacey student.
  • Jimochi Teruyoshi - "has hemorrhoids" - A third-year student with severe hemorrhoids and explosive diarrhea.

Assorted Itan Students

The First Year's Four Heavenly Kings: A group of four first-year delinquents who intend to take over Itan High School, confusing Komi for Katai when they find out Komi's reputation, labeling the individual as "Discommunication Komi":
  • Suteno Gorou - Alias "Left for Dead", the leader of the gang and a roughhouse delinquent who uses coin rolls to punch;
  • Gokudou Hajime - Alias "Heaven's Door", a boy who wears a monocle and wields a telescopic macana;
  • Hamaki Yae - Alias "Scorpion", a girl delinquent who wears a mouth cover and wields a wooden katana;
  • Kusari Makina - Alias "Blood Chain", a towering young man who wields a chain.

Mixer Participants: Three second-year schoolmates from different classes that Najimi invited to participate in the mixer they held, in order to introduce them to Komi and Tadano-kun-chan:
  • Anchi Arisa - "Hater", a brash girl from Class 2-3 who criticizes others on instinct.
  • Tsuzurafuji Saki - "Conflicted", an indecisive girl from Class 2-2 prone to overthinking.
  • Kogoen Yukari - "Soft voice", a dignified-looking girl from Class 2-4 with an unintelligibly soft voice.

Manbagi's friends, a group of Gyaru who are Manbagi's friends from her first year:
  • Muu-tan, a dark-haired Gyaru.
  • Yukapuyo, a light-haired Gyaru; she becomes an Ascended Extra in Chapter 325. See the Itan High School entry for Shiroki Yuka
  • Gonzales - an uncharacteristically husky-voiced Gyaru.

Other Characters

  • Idou Nakera - "Used to moving", a lady who shares an overnight bus ride with Komi and Shousuke, who are heading to their grandma's town. She considers herself a bus travel expert passenger.
  • Teshigawara Hoshiko - "A girl who really wants tissues", a 26-year-old lady who encounters Komi and later Nakanaka, misreading both situations.
  • Party People Golden Skulls (Temp Name) - Five boys that appear during the Beach Episode, who ogle timidly at girls and try approaching Manbagi.
  • Asado Tatsuhito - "Maid expert", a 32-year-old connoiseur who frequents maid cafes and gauges their quality.
  • Tenjouin Ryouko - A beleaguered newbie tour guide during Komi and Tadano's class trip to Kyoto, who finds dismay at the fact that no one in the class (except Komi and Tadano) is paying attention to her exposition.
  • Shiota Shouta, Michisato Laura, Saiko Chii, and Ooki Itsuya are a group of elementary school kids who live in Komi's neighborhood. They are great admirers of Komi due to her merciless "killing" of the treacherous Yamai during an impromptu snowball fight they had with Komi's friends. Ever since they have referred to Komi as "The Silent Killer" or "Sile'Kill-Neechan".
  • Toujouin Homare - "Honorable stewardess", the proper and dutiful flight attendant on Komi's class flight to the US in their second year, who privately hopes to marry a steward one day.
  • Sutejijuku Ren - "Stage skill", a theatre enthusiast who attends 1208 performances a year, including elementary and high school performances. One of the performances is the one Komi's class puts on for the culture festival.

Tropes Related

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Ohai Suki, Fushima Saku, Sukida Lily, and Maeda Hoshio on account of their perverted preferences. Ohai and Sukida in particular are rather susceptible to Immodest Orgasm. Albeit, Sukida's targets rarely even notice her presence, let alone what she is doing, so it is quite downplayed with her.
  • The Ace: Invoked. In Chapter 209, Maeda Hoshio is mentioned to be the school's ace sprinter.
  • Adults Are Useless:
    • Played with. During the tour of historic Kyoto, the tour guide Ryouko tries and fails to engage the kids in Komi's class, but is encouraged when she realizes that both Komi and Tadano have been paying full attention to her.
    • During the Cultural Festival, Asado Katsuhito comes in with airs of an "expert", but immediately turns bashful when he enters the cafĂ© at Komi's class.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Fukushi Natsu declares his dying admiration for both the girls' uniforms... and Katai's.
  • Asian Buck Teeth: Baba Kingyo, whose mouth is always agape.
  • Blatant Lies: While having lunch together, the three friends Teshigawara, Tenjouin, and Toujouin all gush about their boyfriends... while trying to conceal the fact that they're all hopelessly single... while trying to make the other two fess up. Even when they eventually admit to being single, they all say that they had something before (while Kometani's narration keeps pointing out otherwise).
  • Boisterous Weakling: Anchi's abrasive personality contrasts greatly with her small stature (she's half a head shorter than Kogoen and Tsuzurafuji) and physical weakness (she can't force Tsuzurafuji's raised hand down). Kogoen notes this is part of Anchi's charm.
  • Bullying a Dragon: The Four Heavenly Kings try to seek quarrel against Katai (who they think is "Komi"), but they're not aware that it's like trying to fight a column of the Parthenon.
  • Big Eater: Fuwa Masuko, who tries to get extra food from Kaname at the Horror House BBQ afterparty.
  • Casanova Wannabe: The Party People Golden Skulls try to be this, but as Tadano notices, they're shy novices in spite of all their efforts.
  • Catchphrase: Baba Kingyo, the ultimate hype woman, has the ever "Daz right!!" always ready!
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Ushiroda's role as Amami's friend is to make sure that Amami just doesn't give her everything away.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Gorou of the Four Heavenly Kings may be a wannabe delinquent, but the events of the Battle Royale show he's The Gunslinger capable of fighting off Yamai and Nakanaka at the same time.
  • Dirty Old Monk: Played with. Toutoi Son has the appearance of Buddha, but he's a rather raunchy fella. He's not even from a Buddhist family, as Tadano found out in Chapter 256 to his surprise.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Shiota Shouta is somewhat afraid of Komi because of her reputation as the neighborhood "Silent Killer". He thinks that he's her next target.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Hajime, Yae, and Makina try to console Gorou due to the fact that in spite of making a name for himself, no one in the second year, especially "Komi" (Katai), knows who he is.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Sukida Lily seems to judge other people entirely on the basis of whether they can play into her yuri fantasies or not, with next to no regard for the person's actual character, desires or personality. Most blatantly shown when she refers to the Abhorrent Admirer and Yandere that is Yamai Ren as "flawless." At another point she refers to Tadano (and all men for that matter) as "useless."
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Saiko Chii is 1-2 head(s) taller than her friends to the point of looking adult. She'd be huge for a high schooler, though she's only at elementary school.
  • In-Series Nickname: Overlapping with The Nicknamer, upon meeting her, Manbagi's friends refer to Komi as "Shokotaso". They also refer to Manbagi as "Bagiko".
  • Japanese Delinquents: The First Year's Four Heavenly Kings are a group that tries to take over Itan High School. They try to be the real deal, but in reality, they're a bunch of tryhards.
  • Jerkass: Seikimatsu had been nothing but rude on his few appearances. His first appearance is actually when he elbows Tadano in the face. It's subverted during their third year where Seikimatsu admits he's wanted to apologize to him for that for a long time, which is why he wanted to befriend Tadano.
  • Killing Intent: Gorou can sense this in others, allowing him to dodge attacks. One of the reasons why "Komi" (Katai) scares him is because he can't feel any killing intent from the latter despite his intimidating expressions. Tadano is also immune to his senses, catching him offguard in a headband-stealing event.
  • Large Ham: Baba Kingyo, with her signature "Daz right!!"
  • Muscle Beach Bum: The Party People Golden Skulls hound and try to entice Manbagi at the beach, but Tadano and Katai intervene timely.
  • Nice Guy:
    • Manbagi's friends are about the sweetest group of Kogals in the story.
    • In contrast to their assorted classmates from their first year, barring a few, Tadano and Komi's second-year classmates are much friendlier to Tadano and are not so obsessed with Komi.
  • Nightmare Face: Odoka Shizuka looks like Sadako from The Ring, so "ghastly" is an appropriate descriptor.
  • No Social Skills: All but a handful of the third-year classmates can be politely described as weirdos.
  • Not a Mask: During the planning of the Test of Courage, it's shown that Odoka is not dressing as a "ghost" for special occasions; that's her everyday garb.
  • One Degree of Separation: Teshigawara Hoshiko, Tenjouin Ryouko, Toujouin Homare, and Karisu Masa are all friends who go out to lunch together in Chapter 367, despite each of them only having one or two appearances in the whole series up to this point, some hundreds of chapters apart. And then Sutejijuku Ren, who is sitting next to them, ends up joining them.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Mrs. Idou Nakera becomes so flustered when she sees the beauty of Komi on their bus that her expert routine is derailed.
    • Upon being "shot" by Nakanaka on the street at night, Ms. Teshigawara freezes up and ponders whether she should drop "dead" and play along; she does, frightening Nakanaka herself, who hadn't noticed she "shot" her.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Ooki Itsuya is tremendously built for an elementary schooler. Kid's fit, even though he's the shortest among his friends.
  • Shipper on Deck: After seeing how Komi and Tadano act around one another, Ryouko thinks to herself how the two should just get married already. Emoya outright says she ships Tadano and Komi.
  • Singing Voice Dissonance: Uncharacteristically, Otaku Yuuji has a remarkable singing voice.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Emoyama Yuragi and Sukida Lily do not get along despite having been classmates throughout High School and being in the same club, owing to Sukida's tendency to trash anything that isn't yuri-related, whereas Emoyama has broad interests, is a huge shipper for Komi/Tadano and can't stand anyone insulting the pairing. Notably they engage in a rap battle over this.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Seikimatsu elbowing Tadano unconscious in Chapter 4 while trying to approach Komi is what leads to her staying behind in the classroom, leading to the conversation that has Tadano becoming her first friend.
  • Team Mom: Badou Kaname, in spite of being a boy. He's very doting and authoritative, like everyone's mama.
  • Tsundere:
    • Tsunde Reika's is definitely not one.
    • Anchi Arisa criticizes everyone she comes across, but quickly deflates when complimented, to the point that her vocabulary starts declining. Chiarai focuses on this point in his delusion of her in Chapter 254.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Seikimatsu is mentioned to have a cute girlfriend in Chapter 209.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Gonzales apparently sounds like a portly judoka in spite of being a young Girly Girl.
  • Yuri Fan: Sukida Lili is a fan of the Yuri genre and ships Yamai with Nakanaka.

Itan Shopping District / "Itandori" / "Itan Street"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/untitled_8289.png

The Itan Shopping District is a neighboring shopping mall to the Itan High School. It's frequented by the high schoolers, and in particular, Komi and her friends frequent its restaurants mainly due to Agari's recommendations, as she tends to browse and pick due to her food blogging.

Ramen Darou / Ramen Right? Shopkeeper
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ramen_darou_chef_komisan.png

Introduction: Chapter 28

A restauranteur and the ramen cook of the prestigious Darou shop, the shopkeeper is an intimidating man at first glance, but like Komi, has a severe communication disorder.

  • Mirror Character: He has the same communication disorder as Komi, and is quick to notice it when she visits the shop. To the point, he puts more effort into making the ramen he serves to her beautiful.
"Empathy between two bad at communicating."

  • Karma Houdini: They get an awesome review from Agari in spite of the terrible customer service they presented to her because of the quality of their food.

Introduction: Chapter 34

A veteran beautician and a wash girl at the "Beyough Sheets" beauty parlor, Karisu is Komi's personal beautician and hairdresser, while Arai handles hair washing and shop cleaning.

Voiced by: Shizuka Itō (Karisu, Japanese), Cherami Leigh (Karisu, English), Jocelyn Robles (Karisu, Latin American Spanish) and Rika Nagae (Arai, Japanese), Erika Harlacher (Arai, English), Susana Moreno (Arai, Latin American Spanish)

  • Blunt "No": When Karisu's friends ask her if she has a boyfriend, this is her nonchalant response, in stark contrast to the wheedling and lying the rest had been doing up to that point.
  • The Bus Came Back: Karisu shows up again in Chapter 367, as part of a friend group of other one-shot ladies in the series.
  • Comical Overreacting: Arai is always aghast at how Karisu is able to understand Komi in spite of little to no utterances from the girl.
  • The Gadfly: Karisu makes a quick quip about leaving Komi's hair short and blonde, prompting Komi to nervously shake her head very quickly. Fortunately, she does leave Komi's hair the way the girl wants.
  • The Mentor: Karisu is one for Arai as a beautician.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Arai is touched by the fact that Komi was appreciative of the service they provided in spite of the fact that Arai herself was somewhat pushy in Komi's presence.
  • Punny Name: Karisu Masa is a pun on "charisma", while Arai Kamiko means "wash girl". Even the shop's name is a pun on the word "Beauty"
  • The Stoic: Karisu is quiet, professional, and collected.
  • Only Sane Woman: Chapter 367 has Karisu playing this role as her three friends Teshigawara, Tenjouin, and Toujouin (and one new acquaintance Sutejijuku) bawl about their lack of love lives.
