Valflare/Flare

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flare_jigoku.jpg

The Hero of the story. Flare was an orphan until he was taken in by a member of the shaman village. Although he wasn't welcomed with open arms, he grew up happily with his master until it was revealed that Flare was to become the sacrifice to suppress the fires of Hell. After suffering through a thousand years of agony, Flare somehow manages to completely quench the fires of Hell and create a new body for himself. He now travels with Primavera to make the most of his new lease on life as a free man unbound by responsibility.

  • Accidental Pervert: He has no idea as to why the girls would be angry at him for stripping them nude to take their measurements as they slept.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Flare was not welcome in his home village, as he is an outsider who was taken in by his master. Because of this, the other shamans his age would gang up on him and try to beat him up, only to fail miserably thanks to Flare's rigorous training. Because of this, Flare doesn't feel much grief when he learns that the shamans died out a thousand years ago, as none of them save his master cared about him.
  • Ambiguously Human: It's unclear how human Flare still is after his trip to Hell. His body is a transformed version of the fires of Hell, and he can emit fire and wrap himself in it without burning himself. His strength and speed are inhuman even when compared to his previous athletic prowess, to the point that he treats a harsh hike through the forest as a casual jog when a knight like Aishera is winded and sweating.
  • The Anti-Nihilist: As an orphan from outside of the shaman village with no friends, no family, and no knowledge of the world outside of it, Flare never expected his life to amount to much. He's thankful to his master for taking him in and letting him live as long as he does and marches into the Gates of Hell with a smile on his face for the sake of saving the world. His cheer only fades when the excruciating pain of having his body instantly turned to charcoal and getting his soul torched by all the fires of hell drives him to madness for a time. But once he gets used to the pain, he's all smiles again, even finding the flames burning him pretty.
Flare: It's better to have fun than feel down. I'll live this second life for myself!
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Flare's body has been infused with all the fires of Hell, letting him scorch nearly anything with flames so hot that they'll even burn someone's soul. Luckily for normal people, Flare is a big-hearted guy who'd much rather use them to protect others.
  • Bored with Insanity: It's implied that the unbearable agony of having his soul scorched by all the fires of Hell drove Flare to madness as he screams about not wanting to save the world anymore. But eventually, he just becomes bored as the pain level never increases, so it simply becomes bothersome once his soul gets used to it.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Even before absorbing the flames of hell into his body, Flare is strong enough to easily beat up a whole crowd of shamans his age with nothing but his bare hands and with little apparent effort. He mentions doing 20 sets of 5,000 pushups and 7,000 situps to his master, and regularly wears magical restraints too heavy for ordinary people to lift.
  • Chaste Hero: Flare seems to have little attraction to the opposite sex, if any. He's simply baffled when Aishera accuses him of being ready to jump Primavera at any time. He also doesn't understand why Primavera and Aishera are so mad at him for stripping them naked in their sleep so he can take their measurements given that it wasn't his first time seeing naked women.
  • Commonality Connection: Flare quickly strikes up a friendship with Bella over their shared pasts as Happily Adopted orphans and love for bread. He even says that like her, he's one of the "lucky ones" for having his dream choose him rather than having to search for a meaning or purpose.
  • Country Mouse: Flare never knew anything outside of his village before walking into Hell. Part of his reason for volunteering to become Primavera's bodyguard is the promise of seeing new things, and he's quickly awestruck when they first arrive in a city and is excited to learn what an ocean is. He also has no idea what money is and has to have gold and platinum explained to him.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: His red eyes match his red streak of hair.
  • Destructive Saviour: While facing off against Mosie, Flare realizes that he can't go all-out in such a densely packed city. So he fakes a retreat to the outskirts of town so he can let loose with his hellfire without getting anyone else caught in the crossfire.
  • Deadpan Snarker: For all his cheerfulness, Flare is prone to snarking at things he finds annoying, namely Aishera's antics. He quickly calls her crazy and tries to walk away when she tells him to freeze after saving her life, and sarcastically asks if Bella's dad is related to her.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Flare is nonchalant about using the Shackles of Suffering spell as makeshift resistance weights for training his arms and legs. When Aishera tries it herself, she's immediately weighed down and declares that no normal human could possibly lift this kind of weight.
  • Do Not Call Me Sir: Flare is very casual, so when Primavera respectfully refers to him as "Lord Flare", he tells her to just call him Flare.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Flare has a red streak in his dark hair to match his ability to produce hellfire.
  • Elemental Punch: Flare learns to control his hellfire by using his shamanistic magic to concentrate it around his fists, letting him burn whatever he punches on top of allowing him to use them like rocket boosters to speed toward his destination.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: He was already very strong and untouchable fighter before gaining the Flames of Hell.
  • Fate Worse than Death: The flames of Hell will burn away everything about a person, even their very soul. Because of this, a soul confined in Hell is trapped in neverending agony as the flames continue to burn it even after their body is nothing but dust. The pain is so immense that Flare wonders why he hasn't died yet as what's left of him curls up into a ball and wishes for the pain to end. Despite this, Flare's soul somehow remains intact and the pain becomes more of an annoyance after a thousand years of the same sensation.
  • Finger Gun: To shoot his hellfire as more easily controllable bullets, Flare imitates a gun with his fingers to shoot off a rapid stream of small fireballs in an attack he christens "Curse Fire Bullets".
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Having spent a thousand years in Hell, Flare is woefully behind on the current state of world affairs and has no understanding of trade outside of bartering, needing to ask what gold and platinum coins are.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Due to still getting used to his new fire powers and coming to terms with what happened to the shaman village, Flare forgot that he has a spell that can show him directions when he's lost.
  • Full-Contact Magic: Flare learns to control his hellfire by using his shaman magic to focus it around his fists to enhance his already devastating blows.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: All of Flare's clothes are instantly incinerated by the flames of Hell. So when he emerges from Hell, he's completely naked and ends up fighting a bunch of thieves without any clothes on until he can swipe some off of them.
  • Happily Adopted: Flare was an orphan and an outsider who was taken in by his master when no one else would. Despite the derision he got from the other shamans, Flare had a mostly happy childhood and loves his master like a father, to the point of willingly walking into the Gates of Hell for his master's sake and to save the world.
  • Hellfire: The flames of Hell are so hot that people are instantly turned to charcoal within seconds of being consumed by it before having their souls burned away. Flare's soul miraculously survives a thousand years of it and he somehow makes a new flesh and blood body out of the flames. As a result, he's able to produce and manipulate hellfire at will.
  • Hot-Blooded: Downplayed. Flare is passionate about his training to the point of doing double the amount of exercise his master told him to. But he's easygoing and carefree outside of that, only getting heated up (along with his hellfire) in tense situations.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Flare initially struggles to control his hellfire with any degree of precision, burning away underbrush haphazardly and nearly burning Primavera while trying to take care of a raging giant boar. He comes up with the idea of using his shaman magic to concentrate the fire around his arms to make them easier to handle rather than shooting them everywhere.
  • Human Pack Mule: Due to his Super-Strength, Primavera and Aishera end up loading all of their supplies onto Flare. He doesn't mind much, seeing it as a training exercise.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Flare has seen naked girls before back home, so he doesn't understand why Primavera and Aishera would be mad at him for stripping them naked to to get their body measurements.
  • Insane Troll Logic: The old lady who allows Flare, Primavera, and Aishera to stay the night refuses to take a suit of holy mithril armor as payment for lodging, explaining that it's worth far too much. Flare, confused, decides to make it worth less by punching it until it's crumpled and riddled with dents. After getting over her initial shock at the sheer stupidity of the gesture, she busts out laughing at Flare's sincerity and ends up exchanging it for 100 gold coins and some new clothes for the girls.
  • In-Series Nickname: Flare's full name is "Valflare", but he prefers to go by "Flare".
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: Due to being a country bumpkin who never set foot outside of his village, Flare has a very straightforward personality and just wants to enjoy himself and explore the world he lives in. But his simple and carefree outlook on life means that he's undeniably kind, confident, and honest, exactly the type of person you'd want as a friend.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: In addition to his shamanistic spells, Flare is an excellent hand-to-hand combatant with Charles Atlas Superpower courtesy of his master's training despite the derision it got from his peers. His already impressive strength has been boosted to superhuman levels by the hellfire burning within his body, and using them together lets him harm even the angels who are said to be a higher existence than humanity.
  • Man of Kryptonite: The Fires of Hell are the only thing that can harm Angels, and he's the living embodement of the Hell Fires.
  • Mr. Fanservice: The second half of the first chapter has Flare entirely naked, showing off his muscular body until he puts some clothes on. Even then, the first set of clothes he pilfers leaves him a Walking Shirtless Scene with his pecs and abs showing. His casual wear shows off his arms and clings tightly to his chest to leave little to the imagination.
  • Mundane Utility: Flare's Super-Strength makes him a force to be reckoned with, but also a capable Human Pack Mule able to carry all of Primavera and Aishera's luggage without a problem.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: Flare is ripped to kingdom come and is strong enough to beat multiple people senseless with his bare hands even while they're flinging magic at him. After emerging from Hell, his strength is enhanced to the point that a huge sack full of supplies and even a suit of heavy armor feels like a backpack to him. He casually riddles a suit of treasured holy mithril armor from the White Pearl Kingdom full of dents with regular punches.
  • My Suit Is Also Super: The magical clothing Flare's master left for him are able to withstand his hellfire, allowing him to fight without constantly giving himself Clothing Damage.
  • New Life in Another World Bonus: After coming Back from the Dead from his trip to Hell, Flare discovers that the flames of Hell have been concentrated within his body. These flames are so hot that they can instantly liquify metal and reduce underbrush to ash. In addition, his new body is even stronger than his original Charles Atlas Superpower, making him a Lightning Bruiser who can go toe-to-toe even with the angels that have a stranglehold on humanity.
  • Offhand Backhand: Flare reflexively fights the thieves after Primavera and Aishera while trying to ask for directions. He ends up sucker punching one of them while explaining that he doesn't want to fight, before delivering a back kick to another thief creeping up on him while trying to explain himself.
  • Older Than They Look: Flare looks about as old as he did when he went in the Gates of Hell, a young man in his mid-to-late teens. In reality, he's over a thousand years old and has only recently returned home to find that everything has changed.
  • Paper Talisman: Flare uses his shaman magic through these, transforming them into snake-like arrows for navigation, magical shackles for resistance training, or chains to bind others with. He also mentions being able to use them to give others diarrhea, hemorrhoids, migraines, and fevers.
  • Playing with Fire: Flare's current body is a transformed version of the fires of Hell. Because of this, he's able to emit and control flames hot enough to even burn away the soul. So far, his fire is the only thing damaging enough to harm the angels, who are otherwise considered invincible higher beings to humans.
  • The Pollyanna: Flare is a relentlessly cheerful because he was never meant to amount to anything anyway, so he might as well be thankful for every moment he's given even after he becomes the designated sacrifice to the Gates of Hell. This belief of his is only strengthened when he quenches the flames of Hell and lives to tell of it. He's so cheerful that he initially wonders if he was a heartless bastard for not feeling much grief after discovering that his village was wiped out. But after learning just how much his master cared about him, Flare resolves to live every day of his second life to the fullest as a way to respect his master's wishes.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Flare tosses Aishera's armor into the air before rapidly punching it to crumple it and fill it with dents to lower its value in hopes that he could give it to the old lady as payment for letting them stay at her home.
  • Real Men Can Cook: Flare, a muscular and powerful martial artist and shaman, mentions that he did all the cooking for his master despite being under his care.
  • Red Is Heroic: Flare's red eyes, red streak of hair, and brightly red jacket all point to his role as The Hero, not to mention the blazing red flames he produces.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Seeing Aishera's aggressive and obsessive behavior makes Flare call her crazy and turn to leave before Primavera steps in and apologizes for her bodyguard's actions.
  • Skilled, but Naive: Flare is a skilled martial artist and shaman with Super-Strength and the ability to control the fires of Hell, but he's also naïve and a country bumpkin who he's never set foot outside of his village until the events of the story. Because of this, he often fails to read the room (jumping out of a bush while completely naked to ask for directions) is completely oblivious to why Primavera and Aishera would be mad at him for taking off their clothes in their sleep. This is compounded by him being a Fish out of Temporal Water, as he has little understanding of currency and doesn't have the common sense to realize that most stores would be closed in the dead of night.
  • Single Tear: Flare is surprised when he sheds a single tear of joy after he regains a flesh and blood body following his stay in Hell. He wipes it away because it wouldn't be cool to show up while crying, though it ends up being for naught since everyone he knows is dead already.
  • Spell My Name With An S: His name is written as "Flare" in Katakana in the manga, but can also be read as "Kaen" in Kanji.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: Flare's casual wear includes a sleeveless strapped shirt that shows off his muscular arms and clings tightly to his chest to show off his pecs as well as the outline of his abs.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: Flare gains the ability to control hellfire at will. The kanji for his name even contains two characters for fire.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: Flare is a cheerful, friendly, somewhat simple-minded guy with a big heart and incredible strength due to his own training and his hellfire-enhanced body.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: This is Flare's reaction to Mosie attacking the city to get to Primavera and grievously injuring Bella's innocent father.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The magical clothes Flare's master left for Flare are the last memento he has of his surrogate father and teacher after the Shamans were wiped out by the angels a thousand years ago.
  • The World Is Just Awesome: Having never left the confines of his village until now, Flare is eager to learn about the world he lives in. Arriving in a bustling city for the first time has him in awe like a kid in a candy store, and he can't wait to learn what an ocean is. Flare is also happy to eat bread from a local bakery and likes it so much that he has no problems eating it off the floor.
Flare: The further we go, the more new things I can see! This is so exciting! I can't wait for more!

    Primavera

Primavera

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/primavera_jigoku.png

The seventh princess of the White Pearl Kingdom. Primavera was forced to go on the run after her siblings began plotting her death due to the Succession Crisis caused by their father's illness.

  • Covert Pervert: Covers her eyes when Flare was naked, but is clearly peaking out from between her fingers.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair like this, emphasizing her femininity and cuteness compared to her muscular bodyugard.
  • Healing Hands: Primavera is able to use healing magic to close wounds and alleviate pain.
  • Nice Girl: She's much more level-headed than her bodyguard Aishera, sincerely thanking Flare for (accidentally) coming to their aid and forcing Aishera to apologize for being needlessly aggressive to him.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: As a princess, Primavera is not used to being outdoors. She struggles to sleep outside to the point that her party has to find an inn and a proper bed for her to get any real rest. She also marvels at Flare's shaman magic while naively asking if she can try the Shackles of Suffering the way Aishera did, even though the latter couldn't even lift her leg with even one shackle on.
  • Tempting Fate: Primavera tries to brush off concerns about being attacked by an angel, noting that they rarely actually take up requests for aid. Unfortunately, Zuriel is the one who reads the petition to kill her and dispatches Mosie to do the deed.

    Aishera

Aishera

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aishera_jigoku.jpg

Primavera's sworn knight and bodyguard, Aishera is a paladin working to help her liege flee to another country for her safety. But her loyalty verges on fanaticism, and she often fantasizes about having a much more intimate relationship with the princess.

  • Amazonian Beauty: Aishera is a Statuesque Stunner with a huge bust on top of having six-pack abs through her vigorous physical training to be Primavera's bodyguard. She's also strong enough to punch several men unconscious with ease.
  • Animals Hate Her: She is bit by a pup when she tries to pet him.
  • Bad Liar: Aishera struggles to tell convincing lies, especially when Primavera is involved. She ends up outing Primavera's identity in front of an innkeeper they were trying to rent a room from, which only makes things more difficult for them.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Aishera is clearly in love with her liege, Primavera, and vows to protect her from anything and anyone (to maintain their alone time). Unfortunately for Aishera, Primavera is not receptive to these advances and has to Dope Slap Aishera when she gets too handsy or too violent in protecting her.
  • Cleavage Window: Her top and jacket leave the top of her breasts bare, emphasizing them in the process.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She's extremely clingy to Primavera and doesn't want anyone getting close to her. It's all but stated that the reason why she doesn't want Primavera to have more bodyguards is because it would cut down on their alone time together.
  • Foil: She's the opposite of Flare in nearly every way. While Flare is an easygoing Country Mouse with no aspirations other than enjoying himself and seeing the world, Aishera is incredibly straight-laced and task oriented, insistent on getting Primavera to safety as quickly as possible. Flare's complete lack of attraction to the opposite sex stands in stark contrast to Aishera's constant perverted fantasies about her liege.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • When she thought Flare's stomach was grumbling, she called it disrespectful. When Prima reveals it was actually hers, she states it was adorable.
    • She tells Flare he needs to be considerate of others, then immediately demands Prima to use her healing magic on her. Prima calls her out on this.
  • I'll Never Tell You What I'm Telling You!: She has a bad habit of stating how she will never tell people that Primavera is the princess.
  • Mood-Swinger: She can change from happy, to angry, to sad, to lustful between panels.
  • Never My Fault: When she introduces herself and the Princess to Flare, Primavera yelled at her that she was not supposed to reveal that information. So she accuses Flare that making her reveal that information must have been his diabolical plan.
  • The Paladin: She claims herself as such, but as Primavera points out, Aishera's clingy behavior is unbecoming of one.
  • Psycho Lesbian: Aishera is clearly into Primavera to an uncomfortable extent, trying to kill Flare under the pretense of protecting Primavera and cursing about being deprived of her alone time with her. She also salivates at the thought of Primavera's body and has a gushing Nosebleed along with it.
  • Psychological Projection: After Primavera asks Flare to be her bodyguard, Aishera objects to this. She states that he is an untrustworthy man who will probably try to pounce on her tender body. The obsessive and perverted face she is making at the time make it clear these are her fantasies she is projecting onto Flare.
Flare: (To Prima) Who was it that's dangerous again?
Prima: (Nervous) I'm starting to wonder.
  • Undying Loyalty: Aishera is completely and utterly devoted to Primavera, though it's at least partially because of her obsessive Bodyguard Crush on her.

    Shiranui

Holy Church

The Church that governs the Seven Kingdoms run by Angels.

    In General
  • Fantastic Racism: Angels absolutely loathe humans, and they have no qualms destroying human cities if they feel like it.

    Zuriel

    Jibril

    Rafalel

    Marciel

    Morie

An obese-looking angel tasked to find and eliminate Primavera.

  • Hypocrite: Like his angelic brethren, he loathes humans and calls them "pigs", but he absolutely flips his lid when Flare calls him with the same insult.
  • Starter Villain: He's the first angel that the protagonists face in their adventure.
