The male lead and recent transfer student to Hokkaido from Tokyo.
  • Academic Athlete: Before coming to Hokkaido, there was a time when he tried to excell in competitive swimming as well as schoolwork in the hope of earning some praise from his mother. He won a competition, but his fickle mother belittled his accomplishment and told him to only focus on his studies in the future, contributing to his disillusionment.
  • Class Representative: Involuntarily becomes the class president when he starts off second year by Matsuo.
  • Determinator: When Tsubasa decides to make Minami's Christmas present himself, he spends three weeks working non-stop to the point of falling asleep at his desk. He is noted to be a really hard worker, especially for his friends.
  • Fish out of Water: Coming from a big city that experiences mild winters, Tsubasa is initially caught off guard by Hokkaido's rural geography and freezing winter weather. He's also unfamiliar with many Hokkaido customs. He does get used to it pretty quickly, thanks to Minami and his classmates.
  • Hidden Depths: Shiki is an expert piano player and can play by ear to some extent.
  • In-Series Nickname: Minami calls him Tsuba.
  • Meaningful Name: The surname Shiki means "four seasons".
  • Nerd Glasses: At times when he's at home, he wears glasses when he needs to study.
  • Nice Guy: One of his defining traits how polite, kind, and considerate he is. This contributes to Minami, Sayuri, and Rena falling for him.

Minami Fuyuki

Voiced by: Ayane Sakura (Japanese), Mikaela Krantz (English)
The female lead. The first person Tsubasa meets in Hokkaido, a devotee of gal culture who's always energetic and eager to make friends.
  • Book Dumb: She typically gets the fifth-lowest score in her grade. Her family throws a party for her when Shiki's tutoring gets her up to 32nd.
  • But Now I Must Go: Downplayed. The end of the penultimate episode of the anime tells that Minami is leaving Hokkaido to study abroad. After all the happy experiences she had with Tsubasa, this left him saddened after hearing about it. Turns out in the final episode where Tsubasa bids his last farewell to Minami, she said that she'll be gone for just 2 weeks, much to his surprise. And during The Stinger, Minami finally returns back to school. Tsubasa smiles happily to see her back.
  • Cool Big Sis: She is this to Momoko.
  • Exposed to the Elements: For a gal like her who wears short skirts, and refuses to wear gloves, and has no problem taking them outside when it's snowing. Justified that the secret is that she applies warmers around her body.
  • Fangirl: Minami just highly adores Rena because she is a School Idol. When both meet, she genuinely praises Rena for her hard work, admiration and looking very beautiful.
  • Genki Girl: She possesses an upbeat personality, especially whenever Shiki is around.
  • Gyaru Girl: Totally in love with gal culture, specifically kogal style. She's always sporting blonde hair, long painted nails, and short skirts.
  • In-Series Nickname: Matsuo and Naruyoshi call her Fuyumina, while her mom simply calls her Mii.
  • Meaningful Name: Her last name contains the kanji for "winter", and her first name has the character for "beautiful".
  • Moment Killer: Minami, alongside Sayuri much to her reluctance spies Tsubasa and Rena hanging out around the mall. By the time the two settle at a coffee shop to express their feelings an plan for their next hangout, Minami decides blow her cover and barge in.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's a gorgeous gyaru known for her flashy and sometimes revealing attire, often displaying her ample breasts in ways that make Shiki very embarassed. The manga often features extra illustrations of her in alluring outfits and poses.
  • Nice Girl: Like Shiki, Minami has a very caring personality which makes her want to help people. It's her trait that always tries to live up to her class mates' expectations. Even Sayuri acknowledges her as a "nice gal".

  • The Tease: She openly admits to her cousin that she likes teasing Tsubasa because she finds his reactions funny.

    Sayuri Akino

Sayuri Akino

Voiced by: Yumiri Hanamori (Japanese), Brittany Lauda (English)
Tsubasa and Minami’s classmate. Is more of a gamer than an actual gal, but pays enough attention to the trends to be current in both. Dislikes gym class and exercise in general due to her sweating a lot.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She's a beautiful gyaru with dark-toned purple hair, who is an introvert.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Don't let her shyness fool you. She'll get defensive and heated when people bully people close to her, especially what happened with Matsuo.
  • Curtains Match the Window: She has purple hair and wears purple-colored contact lenses.
  • Gamer Chick: Loves gaming, especially portable and mobile games. If she is using her phone or even has it out, she is guaranteed to be playing some sort of game. While it was originally a coping mechanism for her lack of friends and athletic talent, it ends up helping her get closer with Tsubasa when he asks her to teach him how to play.
  • Gyaru Girl: Of the kogal style, though she sports a less flashy version than Minami does.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: When Sayuri wears her earbuds, she's deliberately signalling to people that she doesn't want to be approached.
  • Important Haircut: At first she wears her long, glossy hair down past her shoulders, with two sidetails of similar length on either side of her face and the lock above her forehead kept out of her face by means of a gold pin fastening it to her right sidetail. This elegant but somewhat reserved hairstyle contributes to the deceptive appearance of her situation: Fuyuki and Shiki take her to be a cool and put-together beauty who stays aloof by choice, but in reality she meticulously crafts her appearance in a failed attempt to give herself enough confidence to approach and befriend other people, while the pessimism and cynicism that result from her dissapointment lead her to put out other signals indicating she wants to be left alone. After a lot of character development, in which she decides to be proactive in pursuing Shiki, she gets a makeover including shorter hair with more of an assertive and flirtatious connotation: shoulder length in back with a flip at the bottom; bangs in front; and two wide crescent-shaped sidetails that frame her face and end at the level of her mouth.
  • In-Series Nickname: Minami calls her Sayurin.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sayuri is perhaps an aloof girl who acts very reticent and sometimes annoyed whenever Minami is around, but in her utmost heart, she deeply cares with her friends, especially with Shiki Tsubasa.
  • Meaningful Name: Family name uses the kanji for "autumn".
  • No Social Skills: Her tendency to sweat a lot since childhood made her embarrassed so that she'd sit out sports activities with the other kids, but this led to her becoming clumsy and unskilled in an increasing number of things, which reduced her confidence and led her to start avoiding people. She got pessimistic and cynical about the idea that anyone would want to be her friend, to the point where she didn't realize that Minami sincerely wanted to befriend her.

Tsubasa and Minami’s senpai. She is considered to be one of the best students in the entire school and turns out that she is Tsubasa's next-door neighbor.
  • The Ace: In addition to being beautiful and graceful, Rena is also the student who gets the highest scores in school and maintains her rank of first place.
  • Arranged Marriage: Rena is set up by Tsubasa’s mom to be his bride.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Rena is not exactly keen on an Arranged Marriage, even if it's with someone she likes. When Tsubasa's mother tries to set them up and argues that Rena would like him (which she does), Rena can only reply that she would only marry Tsubasa if he himself wanted to.
  • Girl Next Door: Turns out, she is Tsubasa's neighbor, with her friendly demeanor added.
  • Meaningful Name: Rena (怜奈) means "Melody" or Beautiful"; Natsukawa is made up of the characters 夏 for "summer" and 川 for "river" or "stream".

  • Private Tutor: Acts as one for Tsubasa when he needed to place in the top ten. Her tutoring finally pays off when Tsubasa placed third.
  • School Idol: Being a student idolized by many of her classmates, including her kouhai Minami. Despite her timidness, she has also won the school beauty contest two years in a row.

Hayato still wins, of course, but he fails to score a perfect game because he insists on playing alone.
