    Dad
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unnamed_1_7.jpg

Played by: Nathan Barnatt

Dad is the protagonist and title character. When not working or supporting his family, he spends his time on the internet, trying to become the number-one YouTuber. He likes to dance, eat FOOD, and play Minecraft. He may be dorky and awkward, but he has a big heart. His biggest issues involve wanting to stay loyal to Cheryl while crushing on her friend Diane, and wanting to be treated with respect and affection.

Dad is really Captain Andan Rill, an astronaut from Kepler 22B who was stranded on Earth. Cheryl captured and brainwashed him into becoming Dad. He "woke up" in "Dad Elucidated," and finally returned home at the end of "Andan's Run."

  • An Alien Named "Bob": An alien named Andan.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parent: Dad, naturally, is seen as embarrassing by Daughter. This is brought up in "Can't Be Stopped":
    Drive Daughter to Electric Zoo
Drop her off, then Dad sneaks in
The beat takes over and body begins
    I'm cutting shapes, 2 stepping
They take their phones & start gramming
    Now Daughter sees, she's horrified...
  • Arc Hero: The main protagonist of Season 1.
  • Bumbling Dad: His heart is bigger than his head; he means well, but he embarrasses Daughter, struggles to have any sort of authority, and is generally a goof.
  • The Captain: Andan was the captain of a Distant Aerospace Destinations crew back on Kepler, in charge of many routine space flights and working closely with his Lieutenant, Emily. He revealed in a livestream that he was mostly transporting seeds for Terra Forming.
  • Character as Himself: In the descriptions of each video, Dad is always credited for portraying Dad.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: Angsted over not getting a kiss on the cheek from Mom, and especially when he thought his family didn't actually love him. He is desperate for Mom and Daughter's open affection, even daydreaming about it.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The closing montage of "Andan's Run" has Andan finally return home to his wife Ella.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Dad only goes by Dad, even when speaking to his wife or neighbor. His real name is Andan.
  • Fish out of Water: Andan is quite baffled by human customs, since he's not from Earth.
  • Fugitive Arc: Is on the run from Cheryl in Act III.
  • Happily Married: To Cheryl. But not really. However, Andan is Happily Married to Ella.
  • Henpecked Husband: The song "Dad Loves Mom" makes it clear that Mom is the dominant force in the household; Dad needs her approval to do most things, and does all the chores to prevent her from getting angry at him. She's the one with all the power, to such an absurd degree that she can even shut down "the server" in an instant when she's upset at him and thus temporarily shut down his channel.
  • Human Aliens: He's really from Kepler 22B.
  • Identical Stranger: Dad looks exactly like Nathan Barnatt. This is because Nathan Barnatt is a reincarnation of Andan's soul.
  • Insistent Terminology: Dad insists on referring to pancakes as "little towels," even after Daughter corrects him.
  • Legacy Character: The original Dad is now technically gone, at least for now, and has at least a successor in the form of the Dadbots.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Dad only wears his white shirt, khakis, and tie, no matter the scene. In "Bad Guy by a Dad [Billie Ellish Dadmix]," Dad even says his white shirt is the only shirt he owns.
  • Manchild: Dad's behavior and dialogue is very simplistic and toddler-like.
  • Missing Main Character: Downplayed. Technically, Dad is nowhere to be found in Act III due to Andan having regained his original memories and personality, though one could see Dadbot as essentially being Dad (there is little to no difference in their personalities) or at least a successor or extension of him. Played Straight in Season 2, as Andan has left on Earth, with no intention of returning.
  • Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: He's pretty creepy.
  • Put on a Bus: Andan leaves Earth at the end of "Andan's Run."
  • Third-Person Person: Dad always refers to himself as "Dad." Averted with Andan.
"Hmm... Someday, Dad will have the greatest shed in the neighborhood and the universe."
  • Thunder Hammer: In "Andan's Run," Andan uses the Quantum Sledge to blast Malvin with lightning.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Cans of FOOD, naturally. Subverted, since FOOD is really just used to brainwash him.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Dad has a "dad-bod," a balding head, and looks like an average middle-aged man. Cheryl looks young and attractive, with long dark hair and a good physique. Same for Andan and Ella.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about Dad without mentioning he's really a brainwashed alien named Andan Rill.
  • White Collar Worker: Dad works in a standard office setting, where he spends his days having to file paperwork. He dresses in a white shirt with a tie and khakis, carries a briefcase around, and appears to hate his job, finding it boring and unfulfilling.

    Mom / Cheryl Wimley
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/knoxxnn.jpg

Played by: Erika Rankin

Mom, also known as Cheryl, is Dad's wife and the main female character of the series. She is the dominant force in the household and likes to keep things in order, though shows an occasional soft-side. Where she works is kept a mystery, though she is known to be obsessed with science, and she teaches her teams things like "the non-cloning theorem." She knows a lot more about the situation than Dad does, and is in fact the Big Bad of Season 1.

  • Big Bad: Of the first three Acts. She gets Put on a Bus in "Andan's Run."
  • Control Freak: Cheryl likes to keep things in control, has high-standards, and gets upset when things aren't going her way. She is mentioned in the "Dad Loves Mom" song to be very strict and dominating, she punished Dad for owning a magazine she didn't like, and she even had one of her employees taken away for disagreeing with her. There are only a few cases where she's shown relenting.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Downplayed, since people still refer to her as Cheryl occasionally.
  • Evil Matriarch: Cheryl goes by Mom, and she's the main antagonist of the first season.
  • Freudian Excuse: Her main goal is to meet the reincarnation of her daughter Lucia.
  • Literally Loving Thy Neighbor: Cheryl has obvious hidden feelings for, well, Neighbor, and he not-so-subtly likes her back. "Dad Elucidated" reveals they are together outside of the facility's experiment.
  • Mad Scientist: Determined to keep running the Dad experiment (even after Andan has escaped) and eventually recapture him for her goals.
  • Only in It for the Money: She is only running the Dad channel to use it to make money for her research.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Implied, since her daughter is known to be missing, but it’s unclear if she's truly dead.
  • Pet the Dog: As manipulative and distant as she is, Cheryl has shown moments of caring for Dad, such as taking him out to Restaurant and buying him a motorcycle helmet as an apology present.
  • Put on a Bus: Leaves Earth at the end of "Andan's Run."
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Discussed; In "Dad Loves Mom," it's mentioned that when Mom is upset, "her eyes glow red."
  • Small Name, Big Ego: She believes her experiment is uncovering the secrets of the universe and deliberately gets Dadbot to call her an incredible scientist.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Dad has a "dad-bod," a balding head, and looks like an average middle-aged man. Cheryl looks young and attractive, with long dark hair and a good physique.

    Daughter
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gnrx45t.jpg

Played by: Olivia Stuck

The daughter of Dad and Mom, Daughter acts like a typical teenage girl, obsessed with her phone and her boyfriend.

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: She short-circuits and dies due to Griffin not texting her back.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Everyone, even her boyfriend Griffin, calls her "Daughter."
  • Important Haircut: Daughter cut her hair just to impress her crush, Griffin, who happens to like short-hair. She doesn't seem too happy with her new style, but did it anyway, just to make sure he likes her.
  • Only One Name: "Daughter" is her only name.
  • Phoneaholic Teenager: She is often seen on her phone, either in order to talk to Griffin, or to put on music Dad finds annoying. She spends the entire 4K-Subscriber special using Mom's phone, and after she gets a new phone from a Client, she's seen using two phones at once. She eventually gets a third one from somewhere.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: She’s revealed to be this in Act III, as a robot similar to Dadbot. She eventually short-circuits after Griffin not texting her.
  • Robotic Reveal: In the middle of Act III.
  • Single Girl Seeks Most Popular Guy: Her boyfriend, Griffin, is noted to be one of the most popular boys in her school. She worried about other girls also being interested in him, and went out of her way to appeal to him. They're both interested in trying to win Prom Champions.
  • Younger Than They Look: It's stated that she's supposedly 17 years old. However, in reality, she was probably built in 2018.

    Neighbor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maxresdefault_12_0.jpg

Played by: Joe Hursley

The neighbor of Dad and his family, and Dad's rival. He is quite close to Cheryl, and seems to have ulterior motives, although he mostly just wants to keep Dad out of his shed.

  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Everyone refers to him as "Neighbor." That is, until "Dad Elucidated" revealed his name is Malvin.
  • Fantastic Racism: In "Andan's Run," he compares Dadbot 69 to an appliance.
  • Literally Loving Thy Neighbor: Neighbor and Cheryl have had an implicit relationship for quite a while, and though Dad doesn't trust him, he doesn't seem aware of it. "Dad Elucidated" reveals that not only have he and Cheryl been dating, they were always together, while Cheryl was only pretending to be Dad's wife.
  • Sanity Slippage: Throughout Season 1, Neighbor slowly becomes more and more unhinged, culminating in trying to kill Andan (who he thinks is a Dadbot).
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Dad is hateful of Neighbor, stating in a few videos how he wants to be better than him in some way just to rub it in his face, and then being openly sarcastic and rude to Neighbor when they run into him at Restaurant.

    CUBE

Played by: Phoebe Neidhardt

    Carl Millins
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maxresdefault_13_5.jpg

Played by: Carl McDowell

A man investigating the facility and searching for information on Dad.

  • Accidental Hero: In the Act 4 finale, he runs over the murderous rogue Dadbot, Rorre, with his van before it can kill MatPat in its mission to eliminate competition for top Youtuber...because he was driving distracted listening to Dad's pop songs.
  • Audience Surrogate: Like the fans, Carl's also trying to figure out how everything in Town is connected. He even has a Discord account, with all his posts being notes from his investigation.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Uh-huh. Just as I thought. Ol' Carl is onto you."
  • Mysterious Past: It's unclear who hired him and why.
  • Not-So-Badass Longcoat: Fulfills the investigator-stereotype by wearing a big, unbuttoned, longcoat in every appearance.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Carl likes cinnamon buns. He mentions them multiple times, and even eats one in "Dad Elucidated."

    Diane
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/easlx0cuyagg0vp.jpg

Played by: Milana Vayntrub

Mom's close friend, who also happens to be friendly with Dad. She's a free-spirit who likes to laugh and travel, and though she has a husband, Dad has a crush on her.

  • Genki Girl: Downplayed; Diane can be calm and rational, but is still highly energetic and extroverted, even being referred to by Cheryl as a "big ball of energy" and by Dad as impulsive and wild. She just enjoys life, and likes to have as much fun and adventure as she can.
  • Given Name Reveal: Her real name is Dianebot.
  • Hot Wind: Parodied in "Diane"; during Dad's Imagine Spot, there's a moment where Diane's hair is blowing back... while a large fan is held up in front of her face, obscuring her until the fan is put down and the wind stops.
  • One-Night-Stand Pregnancy: Reveals to Dadbot 222 that when they first met, he somehow made her pregnant... from smelling his fart.
  • Put on a Bus: Diane leaves Town for Bora Bora near the end of Act III.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: "We're Different" reveals that she, like Dadbot and Daughter, is actually a robot.
  • Robotic Reveal: In the middle of Act III.
  • Smells Sexy: Dad loves her perfume, and can't help but sniff the lingering scent on his fingers. Unfortunately, he also knows he isn't supposed to be doing this, and worries that liking Diane's perfume is cheating.

    Nathan Barnatt

Played by: Nathan Barnatt

  • As Himself: Nathan Barnatt portrays Dad and himself.
  • Butt-Monkey: Nathan ends up having to hire a lawyer due to believing Dad is impersonating him, gets sent back in time to 1997 and is trapped in Cheryl's facility when he gets back, though she eventually puts him back outside. To add to that, the video on Nathan's channel where Dad debuted also implies that he too is being manipulated by external forces and he is clearly terrified of Dad when he sees him.
  • Identical Stranger: Dad looks exactly like him. That's because Andan Rill is one of his past lives.
  • Puppeteer Parasite: After being recovered from the 1997 crash site, he ended up infected by an alien parasite.

    Griffin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/griffin_youtube.png

Played by: Danny Brown

A popular student in Daughter's class, as well as her boyfriend. He also enjoys watching Dad's YouTube channel, and wants to know more about him, to Daughter's annoyance.

    Crothers

Played by: Tom Flaherty

  • Ambiguously Human: When Andan asks if Crothers is an Earthling, Crothers laughs and says that he's Crothers.
  • All-Powerful Bystander: Downplayed. He's implied to be immensely powerful, but is forced to mostly observe. He does help Andan out by giving him some tools to use and attempting to convince Cheryl to back down.
  • Big Good: Seems to be becoming this as of Act III. He has given Andan multiple tools through-out Acts II and III to help him in his escape and evading Cheryl and even attempted to talk Cheryl out of her actions.
  • Cosmic Being: Heavily implied to be one. At any rate, he's aware of other dimensions.
  • Dream Walker: He visits Dad and Cheryl in their dreams at first, but also manifests in the real world and claims that those aren't really dreams, but visits to another dimension.
  • Human Aliens: He claims himself that he is not human, though he looks exactly like one.

    Durk Squell

Played by: Seth Barnatt

  • Actor Allusion: In "Andan's Run," Durk pretends to be Dad's brother to get some money. Nathan Barnatt and Seth Barnatt are brothers in real life.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: His first in-person appearance is on the "Beyond Worlds" YouTube channel, in "Andan's Livestream."

    Dadbot 222 (Unmarked Spoilers)

Played by: Nathan Barnatt

The first Dadbot to be activated after Andan's departure. Though he seems to be shot by Neighbor and replaced with Dadbot 69, it turns out 69 was activated early by 222 and dressed up as Neighbor to shoot 222 for a plan by the Dadbots to gain control over their own lives.

    Dadbot 69 (Unmarked Spoilers)

Played by: Nathan Barnatt

The Dadbot that replaces 222 after he is seemingly shot dead. A huge amount of stress from his relationships, a fatal accident at work, and a huge donation to his streaming account causes him to malfunction and eject the hardware that the Server uses to track him, allowing him to go on a journey of self-discovery.

Played by: Michael Stevens

    Lazlo

Played by: Laura Gerow

  • Only One Name: If she has a surname, we don’t know what it is.

    Nila

Played by: Ty Davis

  • Mr. Exposition: She reveals a lot of crucial lore to Andan in "Andan's Run."

    Maeve

Played by: Kuhliene

  • Early-Bird Cameo: In a two-part livestream on the "Beyond Worlds" YouTube channel (the highlights can be seen here), Dad visits the Queen Mary, a supposedly-haunted boat. While there, he talks to an unseen entity, later confirmed to be Maeve.
