Merm4id

We are the strongest big wave!
"Yay! Come enjoy life with me, Merm4id!"
A trendy new DJ unit with a goal of becoming famous and living the luxury life. The group consists of Rika on vocals, Saori as DJ, and Marika and Dalia as backup and dance. Their musical genres are EDM, electro house, and progressive trance.
    General
  • The Backwards Я: Some of their card and event names substitute Roman characters with those from other alphabets, which can lead to this. For example, if you were to read "Tαke Me GЯOOMY!" (as in the event) "correctly", it would be "Take me GYAOOMY!"
  • Color-Coded Characters: The unit as a whole is associated with golden yellow.
    • Rika - Light Red
    • Marika - Neon Green
    • Saori - Raspberry
    • Dalia - Lemon Yellow
  • Dare to Be Badass: "LOVE BITE"'s lyrics are all about this, with the narrator accusing the listener of being a coward and not being an "ideal boyfriend"note  due to their meek flirting attempts and daring them to be more aggressive, up to and performing the titular act on her.
  • Darker and Edgier: Most of their songs are about partying or themes of romance and sex, but a few go into more deprssing themes that are on par with RONDO's. For example, "I will never die" is much more grim in tone, with the lyrics suggesting an episode of depression, with mentions of Self-Harmnote  and possibly even implying suicidal ideation, as one of the lines in the chorus is "I don't choose 'give up'."
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
    • Rika (Choleric)
    • Marika (Sanguine)
    • Saori (Melancholic)
    • Dalia (Phlegmatic)
  • Gratuitous Greek: Several of their cards in Groovy Mix have specific letters in their names substituted by Greek letters.
  • Hotter and Sexier: They have a much more sexy and mature aesthetic, their choreography is more provocative, and their songs tend to have themes of romance, alcohol and partying ("LOVE BITE", for example, is about the narrator wanting to get hickey kisses). Justified in that unlike the other groups (minus RONDO and Call of Artemis) they're adult women in college.
  • Letters 2 Numbers: The unit's name replaces the a in "mermaid" with the number 4, in reference to the fact that it has four members.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Their unit outfits show off more skin compared to the other units, and quite a few of their cards give them revealing one-off outfits and seductive poses and expressions.

    Rika Seto

Rika Seto

"Gotta dream big and aim high!"
Voiced by: Natsumi Hirajima (Japanese), Ayasa Itō (Japanese, Childhood Voice), Kira Buckland (English)
"Let’s have a great time, PARTY, maybe a bit too boldly?
By way of greeting, Shot! Shot! Shot! We’re the cool Merm4id!""

Holding "Life's too short not to have fun!" as her motto, Rika leads a positive university life. She loves to dance and sing with her friends at parties. She started her DJ activities with her best friend Marika along with Saori and Dalia who she met by chance. She is a gifted individual who overcomes anything with luck and charm.
  • Beneath the Mask: Although she's usually cheerful, she feels that she hasn't done enough to help Tsubaki.
  • Childhood Friends: She was Tsubaki's classmate in elementary school.
  • Fiery Redhead: Super cheerful, a total party animal and has flaming red hair.
  • The Fool: Rika is definitely not the brightest bulb in the unit, and she often comes up with spur-of-the-moment plans, often without running them through her unitmates first; it's only thanks to her overflowing enthusiasm and cheer that the other three are swept on board (with Saori often being the last to agree). However, her endeavors always somehow manage to work themselves out, often with her kinder side coming through:
    • The whole reason she founded the unit was because she found a flyer for a DJ contest where the winner would become the resident DJ at a luxurious island hotel, and she was really just in it for the "live in island paradise" part and had no idea what being a DJ even entailed. Nonetheless they manage to pick up Saori, a talented DJ (albeit not entirely with her consent), and Dalia, a graceful dancer who also saves the other three from harassment during a night at the club she works security for, and they're now a highly successful DJ unit.
    • In All Mix, Rika gets the idea to collaborate with a music producer from the United States, which forces Saori to quickly learn English so that the collaboration can go over more smoothly. Unfortunately Saori has severe difficulty communicating over video call, causing their meetings to get nowhere, even after Rika's assurances that everything will somehow turn out fine. After several days of scattershot attempts to help out Saori, Rika gets the idea to take Saori out to a nightclub, reasoning that Saori has spent her whole life making music but never really taking the time to be a listener of music. Saori is met with a wave of inspiration that allows her to communicate much better with her American partner and finish the track, which is met with much praise at the unit's next performance.
    • In their portion of the "side:nova" arc, she turns Merm4id into an outright business, and the unit scopes out a club to use as their new home base. Their inaugural live ends up being a disaster due to not realizing the club floor is not designed to handle shows of their intensity, and Dalia is passed over for an audition for a production in Broadway that she was hoping to take part in. When NARUKO hears about this, it turns out she had the perfect club to pass down to Merm4id, which gives them a chance to redeem themselves. Not only is their inaugural live there a success, but the recruiter who was evaluating Dalia's performance now considers bringing the rest of the unit over as well, which could help make them a smash hit in other countries. Lampshaded when Rika apologizes for not thinking things through and Saori, in a rare moment of positivity, counters by saying that her impulsive, "this seems fun, let's do it" thinking is exactly what the unit needs.
  • Genki Girl: One of the more energetic and lively girls, though in contrast to Rinku’s innocent nature, Rika’s energy gives off more “party animal” vibes. Her fiery charisma is what allows Merm4id to use up all the flyers for their first event, generating a big crowd for their successful debut. This even bleeds over into her attire, where her casual outfit features the word "HOORAY" printed on it.
  • Girlish Pigtails: To accentuate her carefree personality.
  • The Leader: Of Merm4id.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: She's normally perky and prone to taking charge and swaying her unit-mates with her charisma. So in the event story "side:origin Season 5 -Merm4id-", during a meeting after a live at what was to be their new home venue got shut down due to severe property damage caused by the floor being unable to physically support the event and springing a pipe breakage that floods the club, the other three are concerned that she isn't giving her input or mustering her usual hyperactive assertiveness.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Saori and Tsubaki's respective blues.
  • Workaholic: She works a variety of part-time jobs to fund her hobbies, including her DJ unit.

    Marika Mizushima

Marika Mizushima

"I have a teensy favor to ask..."
Voiced by: Mei Okada (Japanese), Kelly Baskin (English)
"All eyes on me, watch my style
Posture and nails, oh, a melty carnival!"

Marika is an easygoing girl with a comforting atmosphere. Besides being a university student, she also works as a model. She was the center of attention upon entering university, but she became friends with Rika, who was able to talk to her despite all the attention. She has a calm and carefree personality, but loves concerts and is dedicated to her DJ activities.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Her untrained card from the Tαke Me GЯOOMY! event reveals that in high school, her classmates and teachers perceived her differently to everyone else due to her modelling career, resulting in her being alone before she met Rika in university.
  • Dye Hard: An In-Universe example. Her untrained Tαke Me GЯOOMY! card shows her with black hair in high school, suggesting that brown is not her natural hair color.
  • Friendless Background: Played with. She did have friends in her childhood, but she lost them all during high school after becoming a model. It wasn't until she met Rika that she made friends again.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Downplayed; all the Merm4id girls qualify to this to some extent, but Marika is considered this in-universe as she's a model who is very pretty and admired by several of the other girls.
  • Nice Girl: Very gentle and unconditionally sweet.
  • Stepford Smiler: She always smiles, even when she is upset or troubled, such as when she gave up on her dream of becoming an actress or when she was isolated during high school. The only time her smile is genuine is when she's with her unit, with whom she feels confident sharing her honest feelings.
  • Third-Person Person: Often refers to herself as "Marika" rather than "I"/"me".
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She's the cute, gentle and pretty girly girl to her sporty party animal friend Rika.
  • Trash of the Titans: She's quite lazy at home and doesn't tidy her room.
  • True Companions: She considers her unit-mates as these, being the only people with whom she can express her true feelings around and also smile genuinely, as opposed to a forced smile of hardship endurance.

    Saori Hidaka

Saori Hidaka

Voiced by: Himari Hazuki (Japanese), Jackie Lastra (English)
"Are you hyped? Or are you getting too carried away?!
Heading towards my dream step by step"

Saori started her DJ career in high school, and due to her hardworking nature, she's built up a certain level of technique. She decided to become a DJ after listening to a remix made by a person who worked at the club FROLIC. Her pessimistic thinking held her back from DJing actively, even as a university student. Rika forced her to join the unit, but has made up her mind to change her mentality and achieve her goals.
  • Ambiguously Gay: She tends to get flustered around Aoi, and occasionally Dalia. Could be a case of Ambiguously Bi however, since she has called men 'handsome' before.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Being the Only Sane Man, she can be this, especially towards Rika.
  • The Eeyore: Downplayed; she tends to be more pessimistic and anxious than the other members of her unit, but she's slowly learning to lighten up and take more risks with their encouragement.
  • Foil: Is one to Rika; unlike Marika and Dalia, she tends to question Rika and try to get her to listen to reason, though usually she is overpowered by Rika.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She balks when Rika and Marika first ask her to be their DJ, believing she's not nearly good enough to perform professionally.
  • Large Ham: She can be shy and pessimistic in everyday life, but once she takes to the stage, she can be quite bombastic, especially when she gets out her megaphone.
Saori: (in the full version of "High-tension BPM") "MERM4ID! IN THE HOUUUUUUUUUUUUSE!!"
  • Nervous Wreck: She's far from the most confident character in the series, and being on-stage as the unit's DJ only pressures her even more. For example, during a D4FES setlist, she intends to start off with a mellow song to warm up the crowd, but out of stage fright, she ends up picking the considerably more peppy "Floor Killer" by mistake.
  • Only Sane Man: She's much more responsible and level-headed than her unitmates, who are usually quite spontaneous and carefree.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In the event story "side:origin Season 5 -Merm4id-", during a meeting after their latest live causes massive property damage and sours their relationship with what was to be their new home venue, she finds herself having to be the positive and consoling one for a change when the otherwise-perky Rika is unable to take charge and breaks down believing that her leadership ruined the future of the unit, a role reversal that even Saori finds herself surprised by.
  • The Pessimist: Easily one of the less confident characters in the series, usually being the only one to keep the impulsively-thinking Rika in check and having a low opinion of herself and her skills, even with her unit-mates' reassurances. In Groovy Mix, one of the titles unlocked by raising her Dig Rank is "Negative Thinking".
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The pragmatic, level-headed blue to Rika's wild and spontaneous red.
  • Stupid Sexy Flanders: In one card story, she is unable to help but feel flustered when Aoi flirts with her.

    Dalia Matsuyama

Dalia Matsuyama

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dalia_illust_new.png
"Ooh, sounds fun. I'm in!"
Voiced by: Ai Negishi (Japanese), Lauren Landa (English)
"All roads lead to dance
Everything’s a clue, I have to be on my toes"

Dalia devotes herself to practicing ballet, traditional Japanese dance, contemporary dance, and any other dance form in order to become a genre-exceeding dancer. She sees something that she lacks in Rika's positivity, and decides to join the unit. She is also a grade holder in martial arts, and acts as the bodyguard of the unit.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Like Maho, she has a tan complexion. It’s unknown whether or not it’s from foreign roots, though her seiyuu, Ai Negishi, is part Filipino.
  • The Big Guy: Not only is she the tallest member of Merm4id, she’s also the physically strongest due to her experience with martial arts, and it’s to the point where she serves as their bodyguard.
  • Death Glare: Marika describes her focusing glare as looking like a wolf about to pounce. She's also been known to do this when she isn't wearing her contact lenses.
  • Face of a Thug: She's been trying to ease up due to believing her resting face is too intimidating. In Groovy Mix, one of her menu lines has her verbalizing her attempts to loosen her face up.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite being the most levelheaded member of Merm4id, she’s afraid of ghosts because she doesn’t know what she’d do if she were to encounter one.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: Like Ibuki, she's a dancer, and also practices martial arts.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: All of the Merm4id members are this in shades, but Dalia in particular makes it a point to have "sexy" as her primary charm.
Dalia: (summer menu dialogue) Nothing beats outdoor shows in the summer. Showing off your moves, getting nice and sweaty... Makes you feel sexy.
  • The Stoic: The calmest and most rational member of the group.
  • Tsurime Eyes: She has the sharpest eyes of Merm4id, and it shows with her being the most rational of the group.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She's afraid of ghosts.
