Main Characters

    Diane Dunbrowski

Voiced by: Lauren Ash

The eponymous "party aunt". A proud Chicagoan who works as a hairdresser, and has a penchant for wild parties.

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: She's a firm believer of this. She's had dates with some morally questionable men who only want her for sex, and her second husband after her first divorce with Kurt is a chauvinist Badass Biker. She's thrown for a loop when Stewart, a patent lawyer who's also a Nice Guy, shows interest in her.
  • Alliterative Name: Diane Dunbrowski.
  • Big Eater: She's constantly eating junk food, with a fondness for deep-dish pizza.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • She may have pulled some tricks to try to get what she wants at times, but when she found out in episode 8 that her first husband was stealing money from a children's donation box, she is more than disgusted.
    • Her date with Burch, her ex-husband's boss, leads to her finding out that he was forging lotto tickets to be unwinnable which she has seen him give away in lieu of tips. With Kurt's help, she gets him arrested and breaks off their relationship.
  • Fat Slob: Her apartment tends to be littered with empty beers and pizza boxes, and Diane has the protruding gut to show for it.
  • Fiery Redhead: Has Red hair and an abrasive personality.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Diane never stopped partying, while Bonnie got married and settled down.
  • Forgotten Anniversary: The Last Straw that convinced her second husband, Kurt, to leave her in episode 1.
  • Going Commando: In episode 2, Bonnie finds this out the hard way when she catches Diane sleeping on the couch while wearing a mini skirt. Also happens at the end with a random customer.
  • Hartman Hips: She has wide hips, combined with a chronic beer belly.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: She does drink, and she practically has parties all the time, hence the name "Chicago Party Aunt".
  • Has a Type: It's revealed in episode 11 that Diane Likes Older Men, especially those with mustaches. Both her ex-husbands fit the bill, and she dates a Silver Fox named Stewart who sports a nice full beard.
  • Likes Older Men: She likes to flirt with men who are a good years older than her. Somewhat downplayed, as well as justified, since she is middle-aged.
  • Mrs. Robinson: Downplayed. The end of Episode 3 implies Diane slept with a guy from Daniel's school (he's 18, but still). This seems to be a one-time thing only since Diane usually prefers gruff old men.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Her impulsive nature can sometimes hurt the people she cares about, causing her to regret her actions. One example is when she accidentally outed Gideon to his mother and spends the rest of the episode trying to make up for it.
  • Kavorka Man: Gender-Inverted. Diane is a crass middle-aged woman with a pot belly, but that doesn't stop her from being able to charm several men, some of whom can be considered silver foxes. Both her ex-husbands are arguably more attractive than her.
  • Pillow Pregnancy: In episode 6, she stuffed her purse in her shirt to make her look pregnant with twins so she can get a cab for her and her nephew, only for her ruse to be blown seconds later.
  • Popping Buttons: In episode 1, the buttons on her jeans popped because of her beer belly.
  • Your Make Up Is Running: In the pilot, when Diane was being threatened with eviction, Diane starts crying at the thought of moving to Indiana since it's her most affordable option, messing up her mascara in the process.

    Daniel Whiddington

Voiced by: Rory O'Malley

Diane's nerdy nephew, who's taking a gap year to find himself instead of going to Stanford.

  • Butt-Monkey: To some extent.
  • Geek Physiques: The skinny type. He has trouble lifting heavy objects, but a short-term boyfriend does compliment him on his "lean frame".
  • Nerd Glasses: He wears black horn-rimmed glasses.
  • Straight Gay: You don't realize he's gay until he's dating a guy or watching gay porn.

Supporting Cast

Daniel's family

    Bonnie Whiddington (née Dunbrowski)

Voiced by: Jill Talley

Daniel's mother, and Diane's more responsible younger sister.

  • Accent Slip-Up: When she's angry enough her old Chicago accent returns.
  • Empty Nest: After Daniel moves out she starts hoarding his stuff and becomes depressed at the slightest mention of Daniel growing up.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Diane never stopped partying, while Bonnie got married and settled down.
  • Former Teen Rebel: According to both Diane and herself, she used to be just as wild and reckless as her older sister during their youth, but has since become a wife and mother.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite her frequent criticism of Diane's attitude, it doesn't take much to get Bonnie to get involved in Diane's exploits, as seen in Tailgate Jailgate.
  • Mama Bear: When she thought her son was going to die in a fire she teams up with Diane to save him.

    Mark Whiddington

Voiced by: Ike Barinholtz

Daniel's father, and Bonnie's husband.

  • Ambiguously Christian: He was raised in a Christian Scientist family. Since marrying Bonnie, he's become much more secular, but a throwaway line by his son mentions he (Daniel) has a confirmation suit that Diane could borrow (long story).
  • Bumbling Dad: Zig-zags somewhat. He's the family breadwinner before the company he works for goes bankrupt and does a well enough job to provide for his wife and son, but he's also incredibly wimpy and a Nervous Wreck, most likely due to his sheltered upbringing as mentioned above.
  • Hidden Depths: He likes to brew his own liquor and knows how to play the electric guitar.
  • Henpecked Husband: It's clear Bonnie wears the pants in the relationship, and he's quick to cave into her whims. The second half of season 2 has him standing up to her when she becomes too obsessed with her attempts to get pregnant. While he's still mostly submissive to her, he's able to speak his mind more afterwards.
  • Odd Friendship: With Diane, of all people, in "Empire State of Mind" when he goes to the apartment Diane is staying at after an argument with his wife. They bond over having to deal with Bonnie's overbearing personality and shares some of his hobbies with Diane that he never gets a chance to do because of Bonnie's current obsession with having a baby, and being bossed around by his wife in general.
  • Speed Sex: Implied. When Bonnie tells him she only has five minutes, he seductively brags about wanting to do it twice.
  • Teeny Weenie: A Gag Censor shows that he isn't packing much.

Diane's family

    Mikey

Voiced by: Jon Barinholtz

Diane's son.

  • Hard Head: He gets hit in the head occasionally as part of his job as a baggage handler and as a child during sports events, yet he brushes them off casually. However, it's subtly implied that he's lost a few brain cells along the way because of the constant head trauma.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: Diane is an incredibly irresponsible person and constantly gives Mikey bad advice (telling him to lift heavy objects with his back). It's also mentioned that he's been hit in the head at every major sports event he's ever attended.
  • Nice Guy: Is friendly with his little cousin and genuinely loves his mother and girlfriend.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: He has to deal with this often due to his uncouth mother talking about her exploits, forcing himself to cover his ears.

    Kurt Kosinski

Voiced by: Chris Witaske

Diane's ex-husband.

  • Alliterative Name: Kurt Kosinski.
  • Amicable Exes: Zig-zagged. Tensions are high whenever he and Diane meet again with Diane disapproving of his new girlfriend, but it's obvious that he still cares for her.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: In episode 8, when he thinks Diane got into an accident and is sent to hospital. He quickly leaves a date with his girlfriend just to see if she's okay.

Diane's co-workers

    Gideon Duchamp

Voiced by: RuPaul Charles

Diane's new boss, an uptight gay man from Georgia by way of New York.

  • Been There, Shaped History: To hear Gideon tell it, he was involved in the heyday of Studio 54 and a regular sexual partner of a number male celebrities from that era. There's no actual proof of this, he utterly bombs his one date in the series proper and his nights are spent watching television while on Skype with his mother.
  • Camp Gay: He has a flamboyant and sassy attitude, prone to theatrics, and is gay.
  • Closet Gay: In episode 5, it's revealed Gideon is this to his own mother. When he finds out that Diane inadvertently outs him to his mother at a phone call, he is incensed for potentially ruining their relationship. Although it's never revealed if it did.
  • Jerkass: Gideon rarely lets an appearance pass where he doesn't let Diane know how much better he thinks he is than everyone around him (especially Diane).
  • Jerkass to One: He shows a lot of his jerkass attitude to Diane most of all.
  • Momma's Boy: He loves his mother and they bond by watching televised singing shows via Skype call since they're miles apart.
  • Sassy Black Woman: Gender-Inverted. As a gay black man, he's known to throw a lot of sass. Naturally, as he's voiced by RuPaul.
  • Twofer Token Minority: Black and homosexual.

    Tina

One of Diane's coworkers.

    Zuzana

Voiced by: Katie Rich

Another of Diane's co-workers.
