    Ward

Officer Daryl Ward

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/daryl_ward.png
I am not out here to be your friend.
Portrayed By: Will Smith
Dubbed By: Greg Germain (European French)

Sherri's husband, Sophia's father. A veteran LAPD officer assigned to Westlake Division, recently partnered with Nick. He took a shotgun blast to his flak vest from an Orc thug recently in the line of duty and is just returning to work, carrying a lot of emotional baggage and resentment to his partner for seemingly letting him down.

  • Badass Normal: He manages to hold his own against orcs (who are significantly stronger than humans) and survive deadly encounters with Leilah and her followers (who as elves are also significantly stronger than humans). Then it turns out he is a Bright, making him an Empowered Badass Normal.
  • The Chosen One: A Shield of Light member says that Ward is "blessed", meaning he has magical powers as a human Bright and he may well defend mankind from the Dark Lord when he returns.
  • Foreshadowing: The movie contains several clues of his nature as a Bright. First, Serling describes him as "blessed", he displays almost superhuman reflexes (being fast enough to gun down four cops surrounding him while his back was turned to them) and endurance (being able to stand a beatdown from several orcs and Inferni elves, that are so much stronger than humans).
  • The Friend Nobody Likes:
    • The other human officers at Westlake clearly don't like him very much, and the feeling is mutual. His early conversation with Pollard, Hicks, and Brown implies that they not only want to drive Jakoby out, but also want to set up Ward to take any heat that might come down the pipe for anti-orc discrimination. Later, when he complains to Sgt. Ching about still being partnered with Jakoby, not only does she say that nobody wants to ride with Ward, but her "Don't get shot again" admonition is very obviously not "We don't want to lose you," but rather "I don't feel like doing the paperwork if you die."
    • Even more obvious in that despite his obvious competence as a street cop, Ward is five years from retirement eligibility but has only reached the rank of Police Officer II. Pollard outranks him as a PO III (corporal's stripes), and their captain is noticeably much younger than Ward. While he's obviously not the ass-kissing type, Ward must be on a lot of superiors' shit lists to have been passed over that much.
  • The Gunslinger: At one point Ward notes that Jakoby will never be able to best him in a gunfight, a point he illustrates several seconds later by spinning around and smoothly putting down four Corrupt Cops who he had his back to and who were in the process of drawing on him, with rapid, well-aimed shots around their body armor. At the end of the film a gushing Jakoby even remarks that he'd never seen such impressive gunplay before.
Ward: Try it! I will fuck you up in a gunfight!
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Attempted at the end when he grabs a Wand hoping that it will kill him and Leilah. When it's revealed he is a Bright, he is capable of dispatching the Big Bad immediately without sacrificing himself.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Towards the end, while bonding with Nick, he confesses that he's not Nick's friend because he thinks Nick is below him, but because he thinks of himself as below Nick. He recognizes that Nick is a good man who is severely mistreated, and that he himself merely pretends to be brave and heroic, and is instead just trying to get through the day until he can retire with his pension.
  • Hypocrite: Nick points out Daryl expects him to always be honest with him, but he himself does not trust Nick at all. Ward admits he has a point and lightens up.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Ward's hostility to Nick is not without reason since he apparently allowing the orc who shot and nearly killed Ward to get away, with orcs known to be very loyal to another and Nick having a implausible story to explain it. It is revealed Nick did let an orc get away, but the orc in question was innocent.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Ward is very prejudiced against non-humans and gives a hard time to Nick, but is shown to be a caring father and husband, and occasionally shows kindness to his partner and defends him against the other cops who openly hate Nick.
    • This is best emphasized when, despite his earlier with frustrations her he is immediately afraid that Tikka was disintegrated with Leilah and swears he did his best not to hurt her and he is relieved when he sees her later among the crowd of people honoring Nick and himself.
  • Killer Cop: An understandable example, since he killed three corrupt officers and severely wounded a fourth in self-defense when they attempted to steal the wand and murder him, Jakoby, and Tikka in order to leave no witnesses. Despite this, Ward is still pursued by the rest of the police force for their deaths.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: At the end of the movie, after he's revealed to be a Bright, the MTF are considerably more scared of him than they are of Jakoby. Jakoby notes that he's usually the one being feared and distrusted.
  • Made of Iron: When you consider that an individual orc is strong enough to lift a car, it's really remarkable that Ward managed to take a massive beating from several orcs at once. Which may be another clue that he is a Bright.
  • Noble Bigot with a Badge: Ward generally hates orcs and barely tolerates his orc partner, but mostly tries to be a good cop, and he tries to teach his daughter to view all races equally. Naturally, part of his Character Development is learning to get along with Jakoby and see him as a friend.
  • Taking You with Me: Subverted at the end of the movie when attempts to grab a Wand thinking it will explode him and kill Leilah alongside Jakoby and Tikka (who accept their deaths, since they think she will kill them all anyways). Turns out Ward is a Bright too and doesn't need to perform an Heroic Sacrifice.
  • What You Are in the Dark: He might be hostile around Nick, but when his even more racist co-workers try to pressure Ward into filling a complaint to remove him, he stands up for his partner while he is not around.

    Jakoby

Officer Nick Jakoby

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nick_jakoby.png
My badge means more to me than the air I breathe.
Portrayed By: Joel Edgerton

LAPD's first-ever orc cop who is partnered with Daryl. He comes from a family of unblooded orcs that were rejected by any clans. This pushed Nick to want to become a policeman. Being a rookie with a lot to prove as well as facing prejudice from his co-workers, Nick doesn't have it easy in his job, but he takes it all in stride in order to do the right thing.

  • Ascended Fanboy: He greatly admires Jirak, the Orcs' last hero, and it seems he's destined to be their next one.
  • Butt-Monkey: Played for drama, since he is not respected by humans or his fellow orcs, is frequently harassed at work by his fellow policemen who play cruel pranks on him and are secretly itching to kick him out of the department.
  • By-the-Book Cop: Nick genuinely wants to be a good cop who does right by everyone. He reacts with utter horror when Ward mows down Pollard and the other dirty cops, even knowing that they intended to murder him, and his first instinct is to draw his weapon on Ward and try to arrest him. He even convinces Daryl not to execute the mortally-wounded Pollard (not that it does Pollard a bit of good, but still). And it turns out that he really did let an orc suspect go free, because he knew that the kid was innocent and that the kid would be shot dead on the mere suspicion of having shot a cop long before he would ever get a chance to prove his innocence. Ward later says that while he just pretends to be a good guy, Jakoby actually is one.
  • Category Traitor: His fellow orcs look down on him for becoming an police officer.
  • The Chosen One: It's said that he is part of a prophecy after being revived by Tikka. It is heavily implied he is Jirak come again.
  • Defiant to the End: When getting beaten to near-death and held at gunpoint by Fogteeth bangers. Dorghu even acknowledges his courage, saying that he could be a great orc.
  • Disney Death: He is executed by Dorghu, but Tikka uses the wand to revive him.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Nick refuses to compromise on his vision of what justice and heroism is at any point. Dorghu even praises him for it.
Dorghu: You didn't break. You deserve to be blooded. You would have made a great orc.
Nick: I am... a great orc.
  • Jumped at the Call: He's always wanted to be a police officer, made it through despite severe prejudice from both, and is 100% dedicated to the cause. Even as things go From Bad to Worse through the night, he stays fairly calm, because, "If I die tonight, I die a hero. I die a cop! When he sees a chance to become a hero and possibly the next Orc Messianic Archetype, he leaps for it.
  • Messianic Archetype: Resurrects from the dead in a Crucified Hero Shot while an orc priest says "He is risen" and the rest of the orcs bow before him. Yeah, it's pretty clear he's meant to be someone important.
  • Minority Police Officer: LAPD's first-ever orc cop.
  • New Meat: He has been recently admitted into the police and the events of the movie represent his very first thrust into action. He is actually quite shocked when he is forced to kill someone.
  • Nice Guy: Nick is kind and nice to everyone, which makes it even more sadder to see him being picked on by everyone else.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: While almost every other character of any race in the movie curses every other word, Nick generally makes a point of keeping his language relatively clean, not even swearing when they are being shot at. But when they find several Shield of Light members Stripped to the Bone, he is so freaked out that he starts nervously mumbling, "Oh shit, these people died so fucking bad!" Later, when Ward confronts him about the orc he let her away, and again when Ward suddenly mows down four dirty cops, Nick is so taken aback and horrified that he lets F-bombs fly freely for several minutes.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: He has few moments when he doesn't realize that someone is joking: In the briefing room, another cop mocks him by asking if an orc on a BOLO notice is his cousin, he actually checks, and when the briefing officer makes a remark about not wanting to see them unless there are badguys under the table, he has a quick glance under the table as if someone could be hiding there.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Nick's social skills are quite lacking, as to be expected of someone who has no friends, but is nonetheless a nice, optimistic person even in the face of horrible mistreatment.
  • Super-Strength: As an orc he is considerably stronger then any human, easily tossing human enemies away in a fight.
  • These Hands Have Killed: He's horrified after killing a Gang Banger in self defence to the point that Ward has to yell at him to snap out of it and get back to running for their lives.
  • Token Good Cop: He becomes the first-ever orc cop of the LAPD — bearing through the immense disapproval of his fellow orcs and the blatant bigotry and corruption of the LAPD itself — because he always wanted to be a good cop who does right by everyone. Even facing immense mistreatment and challenges to his morals, he refuses to lose sight of his mission to protect the innocent and uphold justice as it's deserved, with many — from his jaded partner, Officer Ward, to orc gangster Dorghu — expressing admiration for how incorruptible Jakoby is in his heroic ideals.
  • Token Heroic Orc: Deconstructed. Being the first orc to join the police made him a pariah among his fellow orcs, and he is barely accepted by his co-workers due to their bigotry.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: As an orc he's got a decent amount of Super-Strength, but lacks experience in combat and tends to get pummeled in fights throughout the film. That being said, despite his sloppy fighting he does hold his own against Leilah and her cohorts and even manages to score the killing blow on one of them...with a shotgun.

FBI Magic Division

    Kandomere

Special Agent-In-Charge Kandomere

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kandomere.png
If you act like my enemy... You become my enemy.
Portrayed By: Édgar Ramírez

A high ranking elf who works for the FBI's magic division.

  • Big Good: The closest thing we have in the movie, since he has been hunting Leilah for 20 years and is the only one that can offer protection to Ward and Jakoby.
  • Bilingual Bonus: His gorget has an Elvish inscription written on it, which translates to "Elves above all. Above all elves".
  • Blue Is Heroic: He wears a blue Kiton suit, has blue hair and is the resident's Big Good even if a bit anti-heroic.
  • Gas Leak Cover-Up: At the end of the movie, he covers up the entire battle for the Wand by making up a story where Ward, Jakoby and the four corrupt cops fought against an "extremist group" and bury the wand's existence to prevent mass panic on Los Angeles. Considering that his job is to police the devices that can potentially bring back the setting equivalent of Satan/Sauron, he's justified in covering everything up.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He is pretty ruthless and cold, but he is definitely one of the good guys that wants to stop the Inferni.
  • Hero of Another Story: Tells Montehugh he's been pursuing Leilah for twenty years. Sounds like there is an interesting story there. In the film proper, him and his guys are mostly relegated to trying to get to Ward, Jakoby, and Tikka before the Inferni do.
  • Noble Bigot with a Badge: Like most elves, he acts pretty disdainful towards orcs and notes with amusement Nick being a orc. With that said, he extends his protection to Nick at the end of the movie.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: He's only ever seen dressed in designer three-piece suits with several pieces of jewelry including a watch chain and a prominent silver gorget, a piece of ornamental armor which served as a rank identifier for officers in many European armies into the late 19th/early 20th centuries.

    Montehugh

Special Agent Montehugh

Portrayed By: Happy Anderson

"Yeah, we're the magic Feds! We hunt wands and we hunt brights. We're pretty fuckin' good at it, too!"

A human who works under Kandomere for the FBI's magic division.

Historical Individuals

    Sargon the Great
The magical ruler of ancient Akkad until his death in 2200 B.C. It's said that the Dark Lord murdered him and forged the first Magical Wands in order to take over the world.

    The Dark Lord

The Dark Lord

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dark_lord.png

A dark figure from two thousand years ago who attempted to take over the world, but failed.

  • Arch-Enemy: To Jirak.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: He is even referred as Dark Lord by his most devoted followers.
  • Dark Messiah: In a stark contrast to Jirak, the Dark Lord still has people that revere him in modern day, the Inferni among them as they plot to revive him so he could take over the world. Oddly enough, he is just as popular among orcs as Jirak himself is, despite them being in opposite sides of their war.
  • The Dreaded: It's implied he was nearly unstoppable, and the US government is so worried about him that they have a special task force assigned to police the various magical artifacts that might be used to bring him back. Serling scoffs at the idea of fighting him with tanks, air strikes, and other modern weaponry, and the magical threat is taken seriously enough to suggest that he knows what he's talking about.
  • Evil Overlord: He attempted to take over the world 2,000 years ago, but failed.
  • Expy: He is, for all intents and purposes, Sauron.
  • The Fair Folk: The worst possible example in this setting, since he pretty much qualifies as the Dark Messiah and happens to be an elf himself.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He is only ever called "The Dark Lord" and nothing else.
  • Posthumous Character: The Dark Lord was killed thousands of years ago, but his presence is still felt in modern times.
  • Villainous Legacy: He is long dead by the time the movie's plot takes place, but the Big Bad follows in his footsteps and seeks to revive him. He is also the reason why orcs face so much discrimination today, since many of their ancestors chose to follow him.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He is depicted with silver white hair in the prologue's graffiti.

    Jirak

Jirak

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jirak.png

The heroic orc leader that led The Alliance of Nine Armies against the Dark Lord and defeated him.

  • Arch-Enemy: To the Dark Lord.
  • Arc Symbol: His Shield of Light, which is depicted in a graffiti a sun engraved on it.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Among humans, little is said about Jirak. Despite him being the catalyst for defeating the Dark Lord, he's ignored in favor of focusing on how the species sided with the Dark Lord, and thus their descendants are held accountable, again despite it being one of them who stopped his reign.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Heroic example, according to Nick, Jirak was an unblooded orc; a complete nobody. Yet he was able to unite the Nine Peoples to free the world from the Dark Lord.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: He has been long dead by the time the series takes place, but it's shown that orcs revere him enough in the graffiti and Nick actually identifies strongly with him too and uses his tale to convince Ward to save Tikka by returning her to the hideout so they could heal her.
  • Magic Knight: Backstory confirms that he was also a Bright in addition to a mighty warrior.
  • Messianic Archetype: The orc equivalent at any rate. He shares the first initial with Jesus, lived around roughly the same time as him and is subject to Orcish worship.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Deconstructed. While most orcs chose to follow the Dark Lord, Jirak opposed him and ended up uniting the Nine Peoples to defeat him. While he is considered the exception to the rule, the rest of the orc race became marginalized for centuries to follow even though orcs are no better or worse than the humans themselves when you get to know them individually.
  • Our Founder: He founded the Shield of Light organization to oppose the Dark Lord's armies and lead the Nine Peoples.

Others

Humans

Law Enforcement

    Pollard

Officer Pollard

Portrayed By: Ike Barinholtz

A corrupt human LAPD cop.

  • Asshole Victim: Played with. Pollard and his cohorts are gunned down by Ward after they plot to steal the wand and murder Ward, Jakoby, and Tikka. Pollard manages to survive long enough for Leilah to finish him off when she arrives on the scene. However, the deaths of these crooked cops lead to rest of the police chasing Ward, and later on in order to cover up the existence of the wand Kandomere concocts a story where Pollard and his sycophants died heroically against an extremist group, decorating them with honors that they clearly did not deserve.
  • Dirty Cop: He and a few other crooked cops (Ching, Hicks, and Brown) want to keep the wand for themselves and try to pressure Ward into joining them, telling Ward to kill Jakoby in order to cover up the theft — and the moment Ward is out of earshot Pollard and the other crooked cops make it clear that they will see not only Jakoby dead, but Ward and Tikka as well.
  • Establishing Character Moment: He shows himself to be a even bigger bigot than Ward in his first scene, when he says all orcs are subhuman for siding with the Dark Lord two millennia ago and that is good enough reason to drive Nick out of his job.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: Is made into this along with the other corrupt cops at the end to prevent word of the wand from becoming public knowledge. Ward hates it but Jakoby reminds him it's better than the public knowing the truth and potentially causing mass hysteria.
  • Jerkass: In his first scene, he manages to make Ward's prejudice against orcs seem tame when he pressures Ward to help get Nick kicked out of the department, all the while boasting about how his ancestors used to kill orcs by the plenty in Russia.
  • Villains Want Mercy: After being shot by Ward, whom Pollard intended to murder, Pollard pleads for his life, and he is ironically spared (for the time being) thanks to Jakoby, the orc whom Pollard thoroughly despised and had plotted to murder as well. Pollard later begs Leilah for mercy when she finds him — but this time he receives none. Considering what Pollard got from Leilah, he would have been better off with a bullet to the face.

    Sgt. Ching

Sergeant Ching

Portrayed By: Margaret Cho

Westlake Division's Watch Sergeant, who is in league with Pollard.

  • Dirty Cop: She's in on Pollard's plan, along with Hicks and Brown, to steal the wand and murder Ward, Jakoby, and Tikka.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: Gets one In-Universe along with Pollard, Hicks, and Brown as part of the FBI's coverup.
  • Jerkass: Ching spends every second of screen time being a world-class bitch.

    Rodriguez

Deputy Rodriguez

Portrayed By: Jay Hernandez

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy and a friend of Ward.

  • By-the-Book Cop: Rodriguez is pretty clean and the fact he is outside the police department (where it may be filled with crooks on the same scheme as Pollard and others) is enough to trust him. On the other hand, Rodriguez also has to handcuff both him and Jakoby because of the word in the streets saying they killed cops.
    • Ward later mentions how disgusted he is that Pollard and the other dirty cops are honored alongside Rodriguez as part of the coverup of the wand.
  • Friend on the Force: Inverted. He is an law enforcement officer outside the police department, whom Ward (a cop) feels can help them contact Kandomere specifically because he is not involved on the corrupt cops' scheme.
  • Fatal Family Photo: His first lines are telling Ward about the imminent birth of his fifth child. He later gets sniped by the Inferni.
  • Nice Guy: The only person in the police force not to show any prejudice against Jakoby, even sympathizing with him due to facing racism himself as a Mexican.

Civilians

    Sherri

Sherri Ward

Portrayed By: Dawn Olivieri

Daryl's wife and Sophia's mother.

    Poison

Poison

Portrayed By: Enrique Murciano

The wheelchair-bound shot-caller of the Alta Mira gang that also covets the Wand for himself.

  • Always a Bigger Fish: Is initially the biggest threat to the protagonists before he and the remainder of his gang are easily dispatched by the Inferni halfway through the movie.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Also wants the wand himself, despite not even knowing how to use it. In the end, a crippled gangbanger just doesn't hold a candle to an elf terrorist who is super strong, a skilled assassin, and nigh-immortal.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Judging by the way he talks about wanting to make love (as opposed to just 'fucking') to his old lady (girlfriend/wife), is implied to be this. He's still a hardened and ruthless gangster though.
  • Evil Cripple: An unspecified past injury left him wheelchair-bound and reliant on a colostomy bag. He relentlessly pursues the protagonists, seeking to steal the wand from them and use it to heal his handicaps...and considering the type of person he is, if he obtained the wand and somehow found a way to wield its power, after restoring his body the wand would in all likelihood be used for more nefarious purposes.
  • Slashed Throat: His manner of death at the hands of the Inferni.

    Serling

Serling

Portrayed by: Chris Browning

A drunk guy Ward and Jakoby pick up for waving a sword around at an intersection.

Elves

Inferni

    Leilah

Leilah

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leilah.png
I'm a warrior. A priestess. A lover. I am whatever my Lord needs me to be.
Portrayed By: Noomi Rapace

A dark elf seeking control of the magic wand.

  • Ax-Crazy: She's needlessly violent and sadistic even compared to Elf standards.
  • Asshole Victim: Being Stripped to the Bone is a terrible way to die, but considering she was a terrorist who murdered several innocents in her way, no one will miss her.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Qualifies as a female example.
  • Big Bad: She is the main villain of the movie.
  • Cain and Abel: She is naturally the Cain to Tikka's Abel.
  • Combat Stilettos: Wearing booted heels do not hamper her ability to fight.
  • Cop Killer: She spends the movie trying to kill Nick and Ward to get her Magic Wand back and also murders several SWAT cops.
  • Dark Action Girl: Even without her Magic Wand, Leilah is an scarily efficient fighter with superhuman strength and reflexes that uses guns and knives to kill off several enemies in rapid succession.
  • The Fair Folk: Leilah represents the worst aspects associated with elves.
  • Fingore: Nick blasts her right hand with a shotgun and it's shown her fingers were completely mangled by the shot. She is rather unaffected by it, given she can regenerate from being shot in the heart.
  • Healing Factor: She survives a point-blank shotgun blast, although it takes her several minutes to heal, and appears to be the result of her magic. She also regards getting her hand mangled by another shotgun blast as more of an annoyance, being more upset that Nick shot the Wand out of her hand.
  • One-Woman Army: She slices her way through about a dozen SWAT officers without breaking a sweat. And no, she didn't need her wand to do it.
  • Psycho Supporter: She's a devout follower of the Dark Lord and will do anything he commands.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: While she is perfectly capable of using guns, she uses a karambit to execute her victims in her Establishing Character Moment.
  • The Stoic: She is not very expressive and has very few words. With that said, she has a Not So Stoic moment listed below in Villainous Breakdown.
  • Stripped to the Bone: Ward kills her this way using her own Magic Wand.
  • This Cannot Be!: Has this reaction when Ward manages to catch the Wand without dying, revealing that he is a Bright himself.
  • The Unfettered: Leilah will do anything to get her Wand back so she can resurrect the Dark Lord. This includes murdering innocent civilians, police officers, and even Tikka, her own sister.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When she tries to convince her sister to return to the Inferni, she screams and rants at Ward for having somehow corrupted Tikka.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Has silver hair and is the living embodiment of The Fair Folk.
  • Would Hurt a Child: When she and her goons murder an entire innocent family not even their helpless infant is spared.

    Tikka

Tikka

Portrayed By: Lucy Fry

A young elf who is in possession of the magic wand.

  • Action Survivor: She's not as capable a fighter as the members of the Inferni and rarely gets to use the wand, but she manages to make herself useful in a fight anyway by doing things like retrieving weapons for Ward and Jakoby, and assailing and distracting enemies when a battle starts going south for her protectors.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Admittedly, the way she stares at the strippers in the titty-bar scene kind of stretches 'ambiguous.'
  • Cain and Abel: Her sister is none other than the Big Bad of the movie, Leilah.
  • The Cassandra: Tikka keeps trying to warn Ward and Jakoby that there is a much worse threat after them than just a bunch of gangers. They don't realize what she means or why she's so terrified until they see the Inferni slaughter said gangsters (plus a bunch of SWAT officers) like it was an afterthought while pursuing them.
  • Defector from Decadence: She was originally a member of the Inferni herself before escaping.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: She gets positively giddy and delighted at the sight of half-naked women writhing on stage.
  • Good Counterpart: A nice, wholly benevolent elf bright to contrast Leilah, her sister.
  • MacGuffin Girl: Due to her status as a Bright and being the only one that can hold the Magic Wand without dying.
  • Mystical Waif: The plot is pretty much kicked off when they run into her when she is holding the Magical Wand.
  • Mystical White Hair: She is an Bright with silver hair and an elf. In contrast to her sister's White Hair, Black Heart.
  • Nice Girl: Unlike most elves, she is actually very nice and sweet to others.
  • Tainted Veins: After using the Wand, black veins start taking over her body and she needs to go to a magical pool to be healed.
  • Took a Level in Badass: At several points she overcomes her crippling distress and helps Ward and Jakoby fight back against their pursuers. Also, after Jakoby is killed and it seems Ward will be too, she pulls out the Wand, makes everyone stand down, then revives Jakoby at a great cost to herself. Even though it severely weakens her to the point where she can barely stand, she sheds her fear, takes control of the situation, and instructs Ward and Jakoby on how to stop Leilah.
  • Waif Prophet: She has many elements of the trope, and often warns Nick and Ward when danger is coming. It's unclear if she actually has prophetic powers or is just good at predicting when Leilah is about to attack.

    Tien

Tien

Portrayed By: Ngô Thanh Vân

One of Leilah's bodyguards.

  • Dark Action Girl: She is just as deadly in combat as Leilah is.
  • Grenade Tag: Nick sticks an improvised bomb in her waistband, then shoves her out a window before Ward triggers it.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: She has short silver hair and is an ammoral elf like her comrades.

    Serafin

Serafin

Portrayed By: Alex Meraz

One of Leilah's bodyguards.

  • Ax-Crazy: It says a lot that instead of simply shooting the baby, he chooses to crush it to death with his bare hands.
  • Bald of Evil: Fitting for The Brute in Leilah's trio.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Nick shoots him in the head with a shotgun.
  • The Brute: He is the tallest member of the group and certainly the most brutish one (see Would Hurt a Child).
  • Dance Battler: He is arguably the most acrobatic Inferni member and even breaks out some capoeira moves in fights.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Subverted. Jakoby nails Serafin to the wall with a chunk of pipe from a foosball table. It doesn't take.
  • Karmic Death: Serafin murders a Mexican baby by crushing his head with his bare hands. It's only fitting he gets a face full of lead from Nick's shotgun.
  • Looks Like Orlok: As a result of pointed ears, bald head and sharp teeth, he borderline qualifies for this look.
  • The One Guy: He is the only male member of the Inferni shown.
  • Would Hurt a Child: When the Inferni murder a Mexican family to hide their tracks, Serafin kills their baby by crushing his head offscreen.

    Larika

Larika

Portrayed By: Nadia Gray

A member of the Inferni sent to assassinate Tikka.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Pretty much the only member of the group with dark hair and pretty cold indeed.
  • Assassin Outclassin': Leilah gave Larika her Wand to assassinate Tikka, but during the struggle she managed to grab the Wand and turned it against her.
  • Body Horror: By the time Ward and Jakobi encounter her, her entire body was merged into a wall (to the point her ribcage has become a root-like structure covering the wall and her internal organs are exposed) and only her head and torso remain. It's also implied that she is aware the whole time.
  • The Dragon: The original one to Leilah, at any rate.
  • Mercy Kill: It's implied that Leilah decides to kill her to put an end to her misery.
  • Slashed Throat: Her manner of death.

Orcs

    Dorghu

Dorghu

Portrayed By: Brad William Henke

The imposing and scary shotcaller of the Fogteeth Orcs gang.

  • Affably Evil: While he may be a gangster and should not be crossed, he is trying his best to heal interspecies relationships and he is revealed to be a good father too. And later proudly accepts Nick as a blooded member of their clan when he risks his life to save his partner.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Subverted. When it's revealed Nick helped Dorghu's son escape from the police, you'd think Dorghu would spare the man that helped save his son's life. Instead, he tells the kid to go home and executes Nick himself. He got better.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He treats his son with nothing but pride, and respects his decision not to kill Jakoby, after he saved his life.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He will not abide anyone, even cops, to disrupt parties supposed to ease relations between races.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He mentions being a bus driver in Miami before moving out to L.A. and becoming a criminal kingpin.
  • Good Parents: He loves his son enough to respect his decision to not execute Nick since he had previously saved his life.
  • Justified Criminal: Because life conditions for orcs in L.A. are so poor, he ended up becoming a criminal.
  • Neighbourhood-Friendly Gangsters: Organizes raves where humans and orcs intermingle to fight prejudice. When Nick and Ward cause a gunfight to happen at the rave, Dorghu becomes really aggravated.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Jakoby saved his son's life, in all likelihood, being an orc hoodlum in a city where the predominantly human police don't seem very partial to asking questions and on the chopping block for just having supposedly shot an uniformed police officer. Does this buy Jakoby a pass for crashing Dorghu's block party? Nope.

    Mikey
Portrayed by: Brandon Larracuente
Dorghu's son.

  • Chekhov's Gunman: He was the orc kid that Nick helped escape the police. He appears once again during the end to reveal this when ordered by Dorghu to kill him.
  • I Owe You My Life: Mikey is unable to execute Nick on his father's order because he saved his life.
