New York City

     General
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's not entirely clear if New York City should be the location of the "Big City" skidoo world, which is Periwinkle's old neighborhood, since Josh mentions that Rainbow Puppy lives in the big city world, while Rainbow Puppy states that she was from New York. It is worth to mention that in the times when Josh was in New York City no skidoo portal could be seen other than the Billboard that Tourbus and Skidoo Express use to move from Storybook World to New York, but in the big city several skidoo portals of different types can be observed.
  • City Mouse: To Josh and Blue Country Mouse. Josh has no idea how the big city works, they are there to guide him.
  • Real-World Episode: Implied. There are several implications that our protagonists are sentient fictional characters within the universe, with many characters openly knowing who they are, even if Josh doesn't recognize them.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: No one seems particularly impressed by Josh's magic or talking objects, although they are occasionally impressed by Blue, everyone seems more focused on Josh's peculiar behavior rather than the magic he brings to the world. This is Handwaved in "Rock on! Rainbow Puppy", where it is revealed that magic is relatively common in this version of New York City, even having a completely animated part of the city, meaning to them Josh's behavior was really the weirdest thing about the situation.
  • Welcome to the Big City: Downplayed. Although he didn't actually encounter anyone rude, or criminal behavior, Josh as a Fish out of Water, with anxiety issues and accompanied only by his Puppy, his experience in New York City wasn't as pleasant as you'd expect from a franchise like Blue's Clues.

Location: New York City, Big City Skidoo World
Played By: Brianna Bryan
Series: 1 (Blue's Clues & You!)
Episodes: 16 note
Movies: 1 note

A puppy who lives in New York City, where Periwinkle moved from. Unlike Blue and Magenta, she is bipedal and able to speak normally. Only appears in the reboot.
  • All-Loving Heroine: She is kind and well-intentioned, being quite friendly to everyone, especially her fans, taking time to please them even when she is obviously unhappy.
  • Always Someone Better: Zigzagged with Blue. Although she is recognized as being more talented than Blue when it comes to skidoo, she lacks some of Blue's smart puppy tendencies, making it very difficult for her when she needs to use logic.
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Taken to the extreme, as she's rainbow-colored.
  • Ascended Extra: Was initially a one-off in "Our New Neighbor" as the friend Periwinkle misses, but was apparently popular enough to become a recurring character.
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: She loves to sing and is known for having a great singing voice.
  • Birds of a Feather: Professional Example. She shares many characteristics with Josh, like their attention difficulties, peculiar mannerisms and love for music, which is partially why she wants Josh to be the one who is the star of her show, as they are similar in their ways of express. This causes her to enter a short Heroic BSoD in the movie when Josh is unable to make it to the test on time as she sees this as a sign that her dream was probably not meant to happen.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: She is quite dramatic, moves around bouncing, has attention problems and is a little self-centered, but she is also an incredible singer and actress, and even better when it comes to skidoo.
  • Character Catchphrase: She calls things she likes "Spectacularific".
  • Cartoon Creature: Like Blue and Magenta, she's an ambiguous breed of dog, though notably has smaller ears than the two of them.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She comes off as this when interacting with the director of her musical in the movie. Trying to convince him that Josh is better suited as a protagonist than the others because he had "dreams and a heart", which unsurprisingly isn't very convincing.
  • Color Character: Taken even further than the other animal characters, as she's Rainbow Puppy.
  • Color Motif: Downplayed. She represents the entire rainbow and her name is Rainbow Puppy, but the individual color associated with her is yellow/gold, which is also the color associated with skidoo portals.
  • Cute Witch: Her persona as the Good Witch, as the name suggests, is a witch and maintains all the adorable attributes of the original Rainbow Puppy.
  • The Ditz: Not as much as Josh, but she still has a hard time keeping her train of thought going when she's not the one in charge.
  • Everything's Better with Rainbows: She has Rainbow Motif and her skidoo skill seems to be above average.
  • Female Feline, Male Mutt: Inverted, Rainbow Puppy is a girl while her male best friend is Periwinkle the cat.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: Strangely, although she is surrounded by magic and recognizes it, she does not believe in lucky charms, even though she believes in luck.
  • Four Legs Good, Two Legs Better: Rainbow Puppy is so far the only bipedal puppy shown in the series, besides the puppies from Blue's Room and from Big City.
  • Hero of Another Story: She is a famous singer in the real world, apparently evolved the abilities that other puppies have and has her own dimension among all skidoo worlds, but that side of her is never explained or explored.
  • Hidden Depths: "The Blue Big Derby" reveals that she has an interest in mechanics and she even helps Josh to fix Slippery's car.
  • Inexplicably Awesome: Even more than Blue, since her skidoo skills can be used more times in a shorter period of time, being able to use them even in other skidoo worlds and create multiple portals at same time. Josh even seems to question how she is able to do this.
  • Intellectual Animal: As her name suggests, Rainbow Puppy is a puppy who is talented in multiple areas such as music, acting and even mechanics.
  • Interclass Friendship: Implied Trope. It's barely visible because they live in a Sugar Bowl World, but she seems to be financially better off than most of the other characters as she is an In-Universe famous singer who seems to influence New York culture and has enough money to finance her own theater in the neighborhood.
  • Light Is Good: She is the personification of the rainbow in the form of a dog and her Puppy magic is more luminous and colorful than Blue's, she is also an All-Loving Heroine that seems to influence the culture of her city in a positive way.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: She's a rich, famous, and influential singer, but she's a lovely friend to our protagonists and Periwinkle.
  • Magic Idol Singer: She is a magical puppy who can travel in space between skidoo worlds, and with magical abilities even more impressive than Blue's, who is also a famous singer and actress in the universe.
  • Pawprint Stamping: Like Blue and Magenta she can place semi-sentient pawprints on objects, and she uses this skill to play "Rainbow Puppy's Clues".
  • Screen Tap: When she plays Rainbow Puppy's Clues and even sometimes when she joins the game of Blue's Clues she interacts directly with the screen, by putting her pawprint or erasing/touching Blue's pawprint.
  • Skip of Innocence: Her walking animation has her hopping happily with her arms behind her back, to highlight her childlike and cheerful nature.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Although she is a bit off-earth, she is kind-hearted and uses her wealth to fulfill her dreams and spread joy.
  • Talking Animal: Notably the only puppy character (outside of Blue's Room) able to speak; the others can only bark.
  • Unseen No More: The first mention of her in the series was in "Happy Birthday, Blue", the second episode of the reboot in chronological order, where a stuffie themed after her is seen in the Present Store that Josh encourages the viewer to choose as a birthday present for Blue, three seasons later she made her official debut in "Our New Neighbor" as Periwinkle’s best friend from his old neighborhood.
  • Upper-Class Twit: Downplayed. She is implied to be rich and although Rainbow Puppy isn't stupid and is good at many things, solving mysteries isn't one of them. While Blue seems to be one step ahead when you find her in difficult situations, Rainbow Puppy will be just as confused as Josh when she finds herself in a situation where she has to use logic.
  • Vague Age: Although she is called a "puppy", she has an adult voice, does not go to school, manages her own money, can travel alone, use tools, among other "grown up" things implying that she is older than the other puppies.

     New York City Objects

New York City Objects

Ms. Mustard

NYC Mr. Salt and Mrs Pepper
Voiced By: Steve Burns (Coffee Cup), Lisa Norton (NYC Mailbox), Cory Doran (Mr. Trashcan) Breeze Dango (Madame Mustard)
Some objects Josh accidentally brought to life on his visit to New York City. There are several, but the three most prominent are NYC Mailbox, Mr. Trashcan and a Cup of Coffee.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: They are all objects that Josh accidentally brought to life. The list starts with a mailbox, a bottle of mustard, a trash can, a coffee cup, a salt and pepper shakers.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The Trashcan, the coffee cup and the NYC Mailbox become eternally loyal to Josh after he accidentally brings them to life by being nice to them. Following him all over New York City for the sole purpose of thanking him for it.
  • Edible Theme Naming: Miss Mustard and the Coffee Cup naturally.
  • Mistaken Identity: The salt and pepper shakers that Josh momentarily believes are Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper. Funny enough immediately after Josh realizes they aren't his friends they become NYC versions of them.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: While Josh is treated as crazy for interacting with inanimate objects before they come to life, the sentient objects themselves don't seem to draw much attention as they walk freely around the city. This is justified in "Rock On! Rainbow Puppy" which confirms that Rainbow Puppy originates from New York City, and that the city has at least one entire animated neighborhood similar to Storybook World, with non-human citizens, making this version of New York City at least partially magical before Josh even sets foot there. Which means that citizens are already at least a little used to this type of situation.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: While the main three are shown fairly frequently throughout the film and Ms Mustard is shown with her owner in the scene where Steve and Joe discuss, the salt and pepper shakers are never shown again nor are recognized as existing by any of the characters.

     The Trees
The sentient trees that inhabit New York's Central Park.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: They are talking trees.
  • Plant Person: In this version of New York City, Central Park is surrounded by sentient trees with the ability to stretch their branches.
  • Wise Tree: Two of trees guide Josh to the last clue and remind him and Blue that they have little time.

     Tour Bus

Tour Bus

Tour Bus

Location: New York City
Played By: Lana Carillo
Series: 1 (Blue's Clues & You!)
Episodes: 2 note
Movies: 0

The sentient bus that Rainbow Puppy uses to move between places when she can't skidoo or to move her friends with speed.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: A talking bus.
  • Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: She has two stars above her eyes that are made to simulate Cool Shades.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: Handwaved. She is the bus that Rainbow Puppy uses for her tours around the world and is therefore themed after Rainbow Puppy herself, having a rainbow theme, musical notes and stars.
  • Awesome Personnel Carrier: Rainbow Puppy's personal tour bus, which can talk and skidoo to other places, her design is also amazing which makes her stand out from the rest of the environment.
  • Cosmic Motifs: Stars. She's decorated with stars and even has a pair of star-shaped Cool Shades, she also carries young stars, like Josh, around.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": A tour bus named Tour Bus.
  • Everything's Better with Sparkles: She is covered in glitter which makes her sparkle and has an aura of sparkling skidoos when she does her job and is a magic bus
  • Everything's Better with Rainbows: She is Rainbow Puppy's personal bus, and is therefore themed around rainbows.
  • Inexplicably Awesome: Like Jingles and the Skidoo Express, she can skidoo.
  • Interspecies Friendship: She is good friends with Rainbow Puppy, Blue (puppies/dogs), and Miranda and Josh (humans), and she's a talking bus.
  • Flying Car: Like Skidoo Express, when she skidoo she can fly.
  • Furry Reminder: Well, animate object reminder. She appears to be alive and do things that ordinary cars/buses cannot do, but if she tries too hard her mechanisms may malfunction, as seen in "Hola Mexico City!"
  • Gentle Giant: She's a bus, so big she makes Josh and Miranda look tiny, and she's superfriendly and cooperative.
  • Keet: She is so cheerful that she can occasionally burn out her engine with the force of her joy. Surprisingly this doesn't hurt her, and she is just unable to drive.
  • Magic Bus: A tour bus that can talk and travel between worlds.
  • Pimped-Out Car: She is an extremely cool bus, with personalized decorations with stars and rainbows, which make her stand out wherever she goes.
  • Platinum Makes Everything Shinier: Her color motif is silver and platinum, and she is much better at her job than the golden skidoo express.
  • Rainbow Motif: As expected, she's is themed around the puppy that represents the rainbow.
  • Sentient Vehicle: A sentient car.
  • Swirly Energy Thingy: When she skidoo she leaves a trail of rainbow swirls behind. Its wheels also have a rainbow swirls theme.

Humans

     The Director
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1704747765103.png
Director

Location: New York City
Actor: B.D. Wong
Series: 1 (Blue's Clues & You!)
Episodes: 0 (Movie Exclusive)
Movies: 1 note

The director of the Rainbow Puppy musical, who doesn't warm up to Josh as quickly as she does.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: He's the person who's there to point out the flaws in Rainbow Puppy's way of evaluating people, even though he's nice about it.
  • Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: When they are alone he is Soft Spoken to Rainbow Puppy’s energetic, but during the auditions the dynamic reverses, as Rainbow Puppy is too worried about Josh to maintain her usual electric demeanor.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Although he clearly doesn't see the point in Rainbow Puppy's fixation on having only Josh as the protagonist, he still comforts her in the moments when she seems to be close to giving up.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Very Downplayed, he is 5'5''/1'65 cm, which might be considered short for a man, but he looks gigantic next to Rainbow Puppy, who is, well, the size of a dog.
  • Interspecies Friendship: An ordinary human being, friends with a magical colorful puppy.
  • Little Guy, Big Buddy: The big buddy for Rainbow Puppy Little Guy. He's bigger, more serious, has a sharp head and generally acts as the voice of reason to his small and naive colleague.
  • Muggle Best Friend: He is a good friend with Rainbow Puppy, despite having no connection with the magical part of the series.
  • No Name Given: His name is never revealed, and he is referred to only as "Director" in the credits.
  • Not So Above It All: Although he is more serious than Rainbow Puppy, he is still seen dancing happily when he sees Josh performing,
  • Odd Friendship: With Rainbow Puppy, he is an ordinary, quite professional and relatively serious human, friends with a magical talking puppy, who is a bit dramatic and tends to act with her heart rather than logic.
  • Older Sidekick: The Director and second guy in command of Rainbow Puppy, who is presumably older than her.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue oni to Rainbow Puppy's red oni, being quite professional and logical, contrasting with her emotional and idealistic nature.
  • The Show Must Go On: Try to convince Rainbow Puppy to continue the show even though her plans seem to be going wrong, as it was always her dream to do a broadway musical. When he finally sees Josh performing on the screen, he finally succeeds, telling her just by the performance that she has indeed already found her star.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: The Straight Man to Rainbow Puppy's Wise Guy. He's down to earth, much more direct than Rainbow Puppy about auditions, a little cynical but still very nice.
  • Technician/Performer Team-Up: He is the technician for Rainbow Puppy Performer. He is more aware of how things work behind the scenes, while she, although famous and talented, lacks critical thinking and lets her emotions control her musical management.

     The Cab Driver

The Cab Driver

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/20231230_000556.png
Mr. Taxi Driver

Location: New York City
Actor: Alex Winter
Series: 1 (Blue's Clues & You!)
Episodes: 0 (Movie Exclusive)
Movies: 1 note

A friendly New York City taxi driver who has apparently met Steve and Joe before, although he doesn't remember where.

  • Birds of a Feather: He and Steve seem to have a lot in common. From their worldviews to their love for Rock, which is probably a running gag with his actor "Alex Winter" playing Steve in the Robot Chicken parody of Blue's Clues.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: For a moment he is that to Josh, though in a kinder way than usual. He explains that one of Josh's problems is how he is so rushed that he seems to ignore minor details, which Josh seems to understand later in the film.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: He apparently recognizes Steve and Joe from somewhere, but he doesn't seem to remember where and neither do they.
  • Let Me Get This Straight...: His reaction to Josh telling him he needs to get to the theater but doesn't know how to get there.
Driver: Well, alright, sometimes you just need to have a little patience.
  • Nice Guy: Even though he looks a little confused he's nothing but friendly with a lost Josh, offering him advice and wishing him good luck before he left.
  • No Name Given: Just referred to as the Taxi Driver or Cab Driver.
  • Scary Musician, Harmless Music: A zigzagged inversion. He's apparently a pretty average dude, but he sings one of the most aggressive songs in the film, until you hear the lyrics that are just the opening of Blue's Clues & You! in a rock rhythm.
  • Surprisingly Gentle Song: He sings the rock version of the opening of Blue's Clues & You, which although it seems rougher than usual is still the same friendly song about a boy playing with his dog.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He's only on screen for a few minutes, but his advice is part of what helps pull Josh out of his Heroic BSoD during the last few moments of the movie.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: While other human characters seem confused, excited, or at least recognizing Blue in some way, he doesn't show any reaction when he sees the blue puppy getting into his car. He doesn't even assume that she and Josh come from Storybook World before Josh himself mentions it.
