Roubai Academy Class 1-3

    Komichi Akebi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/komichi_akebi.png
Voiced by: Manatsu Murakami (Japanese), Megan Shipman (English)

The main character and titular protagonist of the story, a graduate of Futaba Elementary School who has recently been accepted to the elite all-girls Roubai Academy, the same school her mother Yuwa attended when she was her age. She stands out from the other girls at Roubai for wearing a sailor uniform, which her mother made while under the wrong assumption that it was still Roubai's official uniform.

  • Academic Athlete: Komichi is a very good student, good enough to end in the top five of her class, but she's also a great athlete whose rural upbringing and hobbies made her a great acrobat, as well as a very fast runner even barefoot, and a swimmer good enough for the very club ace to struggle against her.
  • Action Girl: She routinely demonstrates Karate katas, and in the manga is shown her mother taught her some Judo pins. When she mistakes Erika's father for a thief, she quickly takes him down with a flying kick to the face and ties him up.
  • All-Loving Heroine: She is a very friendly person, who's polite and nice to everyone, and also loves animals.
  • Cool Big Sis: To her younger sister Kao, often doing things with her and trying to be encouraging to her.
  • Custom Uniform: Her sailor uniform is this, as her mother made it by hand while they both assumed that Roubai Academy students still wore them, only to be proven wrong at the entrance ceremony. Despite this misunderstanding, the principal allows her to keep wearing it since it's technically still an official Roubai Academy uniform even though it's no longer in use.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Her friendliness extend to animals, and she has no issue with touching frogs or snakes and to take them back to nature.
  • Friendless Background: A justified but less tragic example than most cases, in that due to living in the remote countryside, she was the only student in her elementary school and had no friends her own age while growing up. This feeds into Komichi's need to have friends in middle school in order to do all the things one does with friends, but at the same time leaves her somewhat insecure as the lack of social interaction with classmates means she has no experience interacting with anyone in her own age group.
  • Genki Girl: Easily one of the most energetic girls in the cast.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Her bedroom has some plushies, mostly on the shelves, but her favorite one is a stuffed swordfish made by her mother Yuwa after a trip to the aquarium. It's name is Swordy.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: She has large blue eyes, which marks her as an innocent young girl who doesn't have much experience with interacting with other girls her age.
  • Lethal Chef: When trying to cook some snacks for Toko and Kei, she manages to get distracted by choosing the plates to put the food instead of focusing on the meal at hand. Her snacks look more like charcoal than anything edible in the end.
  • Nice Girl: Despite her cluelessness about typical social norms of the girls her age, Akebi is a very kind, friendly, charming and pleasant individual to be around, and extends her loving nature to pretty much everyone.
  • No Social Skills: As a result of her limited interactions with others due to her rural upbringing, she's unaware of social norms that most girls of her age have, which causes her to catch most of her classmates off-guard.
  • Prefers Going Barefoot: She is accustomed to run barefoot and openly recommends her classmates to do so in gym class, and probably as a consequence of this, she goes barefoot in any context at the first opportunity.

    Erika Kizaki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/erika_kizaki.png
Voiced by: Sora Amamiya (Japanese), Suzie Yeung (English)

A girl from a very rich family in Tokyo. She's the first girl that Komichi meets and befriends at Roubai, and she quickly becomes Komichi's best friend. She has a habit of using a nail clipper when anxious or nervous, and is a very good musician.

  • Anime Hair: Downplayed. Her Girlish Pigtails are pretty typical in style, but they do stand more upright than gravity should allow.
  • Best Friend: She and Komichi quickly become best friends, and she's the girl with which Komichi hangs out the most.
  • Character Tic: She has a habit of clipping her nails to relieve her stress and anxiety, with her considering the sound that her nail clipper makes to be relaxing.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: She's skilled at playing both the piano and the violin, which emphasizes her classy upbringing.
  • Feet-First Introduction: Komichi first meets her while she is clipping her toenails and the camera isn't shy showing her bare feet.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She has part of her hair done up in pigtails, which is fitting with her girly personality.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She's blonde and is a very nice person, quickly becoming Komichi despite her quirks and lack of social skills.
  • Ojou: She comes from a rich family in Tokyo. There are some things she's never experienced because of that; it's revealed during a shopping trip that she's never eaten a hamburger before.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: She's particularly excited to experience a lot of things that others find mundane because of her sheltered upbringing, such as shopping with friends, eating fast food, going fishing, and riding a bike. She also has a hard time understanding more colloquial speech, especially by those who use a lot more of it, like Hebimori.

    Touko Usagihara
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toko_usagihara.png
Voiced by: Akari Kitou (Japanese), Kristi Rothrock (English)

A mischievous student who is originally from Tokyo. She is Kizaki's dormmate, Neko's roommate, and befriends Akebi on her first day.

  • Genki Girl: The second most energetic girl in the cast, behind Komichi.
  • Sweet Baker: Being born in a family of bakers, she took some lessons from them in order to cook some sweets for the girls around the Mangetsu Dormitory. It's serves after her awkward introduction to the dorm though.

A highly inquisitive girl who, ironically, doesn't like to socialize with others, instead preferring to observe people and take notes.

    Neko Kamimoku
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/neko_kamimoku.png
Voiced by: Miku Itō (Japanese), Dani Chambers (English)

A student who is constantly falling asleep.

  • Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: A more exaggerated example as her eyes are less "half-lidded" and more "barely even open", which emphasizes her sleepy demeanor.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite how sleepy she is most of the time, she's a skilled and surprisingly focused kyudo archer.
  • Sleepyhead: Is always falling asleep no matter where she is, even during class, and whenever she is sleeping for real, she cannot be easily woken up.
  • The Quiet One: She has few lines, on account of her being always either sleeping or almost.

    Tomono Kojou
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tomono_kojo.png
Voiced by: Shion Wakayama (Japanese), Kate Bristol (English)

A sensitive bookworm girl.

  • Brainy Brunette: Is a brunette who is noted to be very intelligent.
  • Cute Bookworm: Very much so. She's almost always absorbed in her books, whether she's reading them or writing them herself.
  • Sentimental Homemade Toy: Well, bookmark. It was handmade by her mother who pressed the flowers that adorn it herself, and Tomono treasures it greatly. She becomes very distressed when she thinks she's lost it, because it was the first bookmark she ever had and she sees it as something of a good luck charm. And of course, for a girl living with her grandmother far from home, it's something that's a constant reminder of her mother. Luckily, with the help of Komichi and co., she's able to get it back.
  • Writer's Block Montage: Has one when she's asked to write a screenplay for the drama club.

    Riona Shijou
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/riona_shijo.png
Voiced by: Azusa Tadokoro (Japanese), Amber Lee Connors (English)

  • D-Cup Distress: She started developing breasts much earlier than her peers, and she's quite self-conscious about it, especially since it's affected her tennis-playing ability. This is Truth in Television for many girls who start puberty earlier than their classmates.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's even more shy and insecure than Erika, which says a lot. She's started opening up thanks to Komichi and Erika, though.
  • Weight Woe: She's noticeably much chubbier than her classmates, especially slim and toned girls like Komichi, so it's a point of insecurity for her. Erika tells her she has nothing to worry about.

    Ai Tatsumori
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ai_tatsumori.png
Voiced by: Mariya Ise (Japanese), Felecia Angelle (English)

A very serious and studious girl, who's also the class vice-president.

    Kei Tanigawa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kei_tanigawa.png
Voiced by: Akira Sekine (Japanese), Madeleine Morris (English)

The class president, who's also the best student of the class and a member of the photography club.

  • Camera Fiend: Being part of the photography club, she's very good at using her camera to take photos of her classmates, although ironically, she is very insecure about taking photos of herself.
  • Phoneaholic Teenager: Downplayed, but it's thanks to Komichi that she found a love in taking selfies of herself, and she used that knowlegde to join in the photography club.
  • Tears of Remorse: After being found out by her mother taking some "intense" selfies, and accidentally dropping her cellphone and sending the photos to Komichi, all that Kei could do was to cry at what she did.

    Ayumi Tougeguchi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ayumi_togeguchi.png
Voiced by: Shiori Mikami (Japanese), Kelsey Maher (English)

A hammy girl with severe anxiety.

  • Adaptational Comic Relief: Not that the manga doesn't make humor of her exaggerated reactions, but it keeps them mostly to herself, while in the anime she does them openly and is therefore caught by Akebi and Ohkuma while comically venting out on the roof.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: The anime makes her surprisingly timid despite all her bombast, so her scenes are expanded by her not bringing herself to talk to Komichi rather than fortuitously walking on her as in the manga.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She envies that other girls can be cuter or more popular than her, and even worse, closer to Akebi.
  • Large Ham: Although usually limited to her inner monologues, she is very grandiloquent and expressive.
  • Nervous Wreck: Has lifelong anxiety, which used to cause her stomach aches.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Ever since she found out that Komichi has arrived in Roubai, she waited and stalked her just for the right opportunity to return her handkerchief back to her, ever since meeting her before at the auditions to the school.

    Mai Togano
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mai_togano.png
Voiced by: Haruka Shiraishi (Japanese), Katelyn Barr (English)

A member of the basketball club.

  • Birthday Hater: She doesn't like her birthday because it's also the anniversary of her parents' deaths.
  • Determinator: She is specifically determined to make three-point shots, even when her coach tells her it might be best to focus on different skills.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: A variety. She tells Komichi not to feel sorry for her because she lost her parents, because she feels that everything else in her life has been happy enough to make up for it. She got all the support she needed and has a loving adoptive family, so she gets pissed when people are insistent on feeling sorry for her.
  • Happily Adopted: Has loving adoptive parents who she is happy with.

    Yasuko Nawashiro
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yasuko_nawashiro.png
Voiced by: Kaede Hondo (Japanese), Bryn Apprill (English)

A friendly and popular girl, member of the volleyball club.

  • Dissonant Serenity: Nothing ever flaps her.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Not all the time, but often while smiling, which is still a lot of her screentime.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She has dirty blonde hair and is nice to everyone.
  • Height Angst: She's not exactly a Huge Schoolgirl to the extent of Hitomi, but she shot up in height before the rest of her classmates in elementary school, which gave her a complex over being taller even than the boy she was dating. She took an interest in Hitomi specifically because she'd never met a girl her age who was taller than her before.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Has shades of this. She's the kind of girl to keep smiling sweetly no matter what, even when she feels extremely upset.

    Riri Minakami
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/riri_minakami.png
Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa (Japanese), Dawn M. Bennett (English)

A Kansai native and the ace of the swimming club, with a playful and competitive personality. However, she doesn't perform great academically.

  • The Ace: She's an exceptionally good and fast swimmer, having been to the national swimming competitions as a middle-schooler, and beating Komichi during their swimming race to designate who'll be the anchor of the swimming team at the Sports Festival, though not by much, and brings the swimming team the victory at the festival.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: While she's extremely good at swimming, she isn't great at other academical subjects and requires help from the other girls to better her grades.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Inverted, she befriends Komichi after beating her at their swimming race, congratulating Komichi for her speed and hugging her.
  • The Gadfly: She's a nice person, but does enjoy teasing and pranking others, teasing Ai several times and jokingly betting Komichi's sailor uniform in their race to motivate Komichi to be at 100%.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: She seems to have a cat as a pet when it's shows her on her house before training tomorrow.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Ziggaged trope. On one hand, she took off her gym shirt when she was sweaty, and wanted to do the same with Riona too, by force. On the other hand however, she seems shocked and surprised when Touko and Kao surprised her and want to strip her gym shorts too, almost as this was far too enough for her.
  • Spirited Competitor: She enjoys swimming the most when she has a true competitor to race with, telling Komichi that she never enjoyed swimming as much as she did during their race.

    Hotaru Hiraiwa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hotaru_hiraiwa.png
Voiced by: Momo Asakura (Japanese), Lizzie Freeman (English)

A sweet and soft-spoken girl with the height of a grade schooler.

  • Hidden Depths: Not only is she nimble enough to outrun Komichi in a chase game, she plays the trumpet as well. She also hates losing, as noted during the sports festival when she becomes frustrated with her loss in the badminton match.
  • Older Than They Look: She's the smallest and youngest-looking girl in the class, despite being a first-year in middle school.

    Oshizu Hebimori
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oshizu_hebimori.png
Voiced by: Mitsuho Kambe (Japanese), Michelle Rojas (English)

A punkish girl with a penchant for rock and Togano's roommate.

    Hitomi Washio
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hitomi_washio.png
Voiced by: Shizuka Ishigami (Japanese), Morgan Garrett (English)

A tall and aloof, stoic girl, whose only interest is volleyball, and is Nawashiro's best friend.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She's tall, has dark brown hair, and is very aloof and reserved. That said, she warms up to the rest of the class over time and shows Cuteness Proximity towards Komichi's little sister Kao.
  • Cool Big Sis: Start acting like one toward Kao, with her being always with her during the volleyball training before the festival, and carrying her over her shoulders.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Despite her usual aloofness and stoicism she immediatly fall to Kao's cuteness and strike up a friendship with her upon meeting her.
  • Foil: To Riona of all people. Riona is average height but began developing breasts and filling out before the rest of her class, giving her Weight Woe and making it more difficult to enjoy her favorite sport. Hitomi had her growth spurt early as well, giving her a height that's tall even for a grown woman, but it's only given her an advantage when it comes to volleyball, and she couldn't care less about being so much taller than other girls her age.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: While she's usually aloof and stoic, the one thing she gets really passionate about is volleyball.
  • Younger Than They Look: Despite being more taller than the teacher from her class, as well as more serious, she's still a student from Roubai at the end of the day, so she's either 12 or 13 years old like her peers.

Other students of Roubai Academy:

    Hoko Chiarashi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hoko_chiarashi.jpg
Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki (Japanese)
The president of the Drama club.

  • Anime Hair: Has pink hair. Given that she is the only character who doesn't have a realistic hair color (Hotaru could be interpreted as ash blond) and is known to be a an eccentric, this may imply hair dye.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Apparently, she is known in her class for being very weird.
  • Driven to Madness: Played for laughs. She was a top student back when she was in first year, but later went a bit off. It's unknown why.
  • Height Angst: Being quite short, she doesn't like tall girls.
  • The Stoic: Ironically for a drama club member, she is very stone-faced and has a monotonous voice.

Other characters:

    Miki Fukumoto
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0_miki_fukumoto.png
Voiced by: Shuka Saitou (Japanese), Amanda Lee (English)
