YMMV / Akebi's Sailor Uniform

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: While the anime is not outright hated there, it's notable that the divisiveness referred below happens mainly in American ground, where popular sensibilities about sexualizing underage characters are harsher than in Japan, Europe or the Hispanosphere.
  • Awesome Art: The manga's art is highly detailed, both in regards to the characters and the backgrounds. The anime is not only just as detailed, but also very fluidly animated.
  • Awesome Music: The OP, "Hajimari no Setsuna", is considerably one. Sung by the entire main cast, it blends everyone's voice into one girly upbeat theme.
  • Broken Base: Generally, reception of the series depends heavily on whether the viewer gets to see past the Fanservice and appreciate the Sweet Dreams Fuel at its core. Some viewers find the fanservice distasteful and off-putting since it's focused on characters who are young girls in middle school and they feel this clashes with the nostalgic tone the story usually goes for, while others are more willing to overlook it and enjoy the series as a heartwarming Coming of Age Story with added nostalgic value.
  • Les Yay: The amount of rather romantically-charged scenes between Komichi and her new circle of friends is really ridiculous. It's to the point that many joke that the series is really a soft-sell Yuri Harem Genre series.
  • Memetic Mutation: Feet: The Anime.note
  • Moe: Several of the girls, both by their cute appearances and their various quirks, but especially the little Hotaru.
  • Periphery Demographic: Although the manga is technically aimed at adult men, it has also a significant number of female fans, who find it endearing for reminding them of their own early adolescence. Perhaps not by a coincidence, the anime's director, writer, character designer and soundtrack artist are all women.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Little Girls?: The series is a Coming of Age Story about Komichi, a girl who's just entered middle school, which makes it seem as though it's aimed at preteen girls like her. The manga is actually seinen, and while it's mostly clean there are still some modest if still very noticeable moments of Male Gaze.
