"...and to top it all off, yet another train derailed, and you'll never guess why. [...] It was because there was a plane on it!"

The Unused and Majin Show is a series of audio / video comedy made by YouTuber Nominal Dingus. The show follows Majin Sonic and Nominal's original Sonic.EXE character, Unused, as they constantly bicker about all sorts of random things, with some special guests showing up along the way. A playlist of the current episodes can be found here.

This audio play contains the following tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: In Episode 11, music from Angry Birds coming out of nowhere causes everyone at the back of the truck to laugh at the situation at hand.
  • Adaptation Expansion: Whilst neither Sonic CD (the origin of Majin Sonic as a whole) and Vs Sonic.exe (the mod that established Majin Sonic as a character) give much of an actual, defined characterisation of Majin, here, the podcast establishes him as someone with a With Friends Like These... dynamic with Unused, living in the same apartment room as him.
  • Adaptational Personality Change:
    • Lord X, despite having his usual eerie presence, is more modest and casual when talking to Unused and Majin, and is not afraid to show his enjoyment for bagel bites, quesadillas and black holes. In addition, he dedicates his spare time to being a professional gamer and a voice actor.
Unused: Wait, so what do you do for a living?
Lord X: I have a gaming channel, and I do voice work on the side.
    • Starved manages to keep his appetite in check in this series, not mentioning any ideas of trying to eat the two hedgehogs he is in front of.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • In Episode 5, Starved calls Furnace after Unused and Majin talk about a derailing train in Manhattan, with the phrasing of the call implicating that Manhattan is about to get carpet-bombed. Only after a moment where Unused and Majin start freaking out over what Starved is doing does the latter reveal that the Furnace robots are instead dropping carpets all around Manhattan - literally "carpet-bombing" the city.
    • In Episode 10, Xanthus seems to be setting up the "Candice nuts" meme with one news report, only to state an actual name relevant to the report; "Candice Farrington", a graduate from Harvard University.
  • Beat:
  • Broken Record: Coldsteel just says nothing but "Nothing personel, kid" over and over for the first 40 seconds of Episode 8.
  • The Cameo: There's a brief moment in Episode 2 where Fleetway Super Sonic shouts at the other hedgehogs to "SHUT THE F**K UP!" off-screen, leading them to discuss about him for a little bit.
    • In Season 2 Episode 6, Pico is offhandedly mentioned by Boyfriend when he notices Majin's haircut, and near the end, Girlfriend makes a non-visual cameo when she's heard over the phone prior to BF taking his leave.
    • In the same episode MX is mentioned twice. Once by Boyfriend calling him a bitch and the second time has Unused say that he would've been a much better guest.
  • Crazy-Prepared: In Episode 6, Majin happens to be already set up for defence against a galaxy-induced war against him and Unused... which may or may not involve Lord X throwing stars at the attackers.
  • Dead Serious: Episode 5.1 completely drops any jokes, with Unused and Majin referring the viewer to another video concerning the drama that had happened prior with Nominal.
  • Death from Above: Discussed and subverted. After the usual "train with a plane on it" gag is mentioned in Episode 5, Starved contacts his Furnace carpet bombers to attack Manhattan, which causes clear concern from Unused and Majin. However, this turns out to be harmless carpets being dropped all over the place.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: As much of a dumb Manchild as he is (just like in canon), Boyfriend is at least smart enough to point out that the whole table setup seen in most episodes of the Audio Play is in a similar fashion to the maintenance check sequences in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, and also identifies himself dropping out of college as official canon, even without bothering to do fact-checking.
  • Expy: Unused is this to Revie's EXE, dubbed "Frexe" in Nominal's canon, having been created by him to carry on the life he didn't get to live, and bearing the same "entity that tries to impersonate Sonic" motif.
  • Fishing Episode: Episode 3 of the After Hours shows Lord X and Unused fishing together, implied to happen after Episode 13 of the main series given that Lord X broke Unused out of prison by...inviting him to go fishing with him.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: The big creature seen leaping over the truck before the group enter federal prison in Episode 11 is named "Jerry", which amuses several of the passengers, Majin included. They shut up after the driver threatens to make them Jerry's next meal if they keep insulting him, though.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: Not only is Episode 11 the current longest-running episode in the series, but instead of being solely audio-based, it is seen in action via VRChat. It does return to audio and picture format near the end, though.
  • Get Out!:
    • The main series' running gag is Majin snapping at the end of the episode out of frustration and shouting at everyone to leave.
    • In Episode 6, Majin feels the urge to shout this by the 30-second mark, though holds his tongue, knowing that the episode would've been insanely short had he done so.
    • Episode 7 has Unused do this instead, the very second he realises they're at the end of the episode.
    • In Episode 8, Unused lets out one massive, overly long list of transgressions in an effort to get Coldsteel to leave the room, which eventually works.
    • In After Hours Episode 2, Majin says this to Xanthus, but this time, it's an inverted example in that Majin is saying this in Xanthus's room. Majin himself takes his leave whilst muttering in frustration.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Implied. After Unused manages to play the beginning to "Soulless" on the piano in Episode 4, Majin is genuinely caught off-guard at how his piano playing skills have improved, and outright said that he was joking when he told Unused to "try being better", all but stating that he was jealous of how well Unused played the piano in that particular moment.
  • "Groundhog Day" Loop: Played for laughs with the YouTube shorts, which are conveniently made to be looped indefinitely.
  • Head Desk: Episode 12 has Majin plant his head face-first on his desk in frustration as he waits for the right time to get Unused out of federal prison. His constant head-desking however gets Hog concerned for Majin's health, which comically gets really bad when Majin rapidly head-desks to the point where even Scorched yells at him to stop.
  • Incoming Ham: Starved makes his grand entrance in Episode 5 with the beginning of "In the End", with Unused joining in, much to Majin's bafflement.
  • Jump Scare: In-universe and out-of-universe, once Unused looks into Lord X's eyes, a sudden loud noise with Lord X's Nightmare Face is shown, with an image of Twitter stretching by, both of which cause Unused to scream in panic before abruptly looking away. As Majin puts it, "His eyes are literally a gateway into hell".
  • Literal-Minded: During the "After Hours" series in the first episode, Unused suggests to Starved to catch up with someone else close by, mainly to strike up a conversation. A few moments later, it's revealed that Starved tried running after that person, quite literally trying to catch up with him much to Unused's annoyance.
  • Medium Awareness: In Episode 11, the Sonic accompanying Unused and Majin in the truck is the only one who seems to be aware of the TV screen being used to monitor them on their way to federal prison. Nobody else can see it, and Majin passes it off as this Sonic being schizophrenic.
  • Motor Mouth: Unused says a lot of random things in one go during the second episode, with Hog lampshading how he's able to talk that fast.
Unused: The moon was split in half, yet another train derailed, Mars exploded, the Milkyway chocolate factory has been shut down for putting too much caramel in their candies, people are able to fly now, and only a small percentage of my views are actually subscribed.
Hog: How are you able to talk that fast?
Majin: You get used to it after a while.
  • Mythology Gag: In the first episode, Unused claims that the only reason Majin ever got any real fame was solely because "(he) roasted someone who had purple hair", referring to the popular skit where Majin did just that to Xenophanes. Majin, of course, defends his case.
  • Never Say "Die": When Unused first talks about the now-iconic derailed train joke, he mentions that nobody was harmed or "un-alived".
  • Noodle Incident: The reason Unused and Majin got caught and escorted off to federal jail in Episode 11 was, in part, thanks to Unused not paying his taxes to the IRS. However, the biggest kicker was that he used a Disney property in a non-uploaded video that the company somehow learned about, summoning Mickey Mouse and hundreds of policemen to their doorstep in an instant.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome:
    • Though we don't see it for ourselves but only hear it, Lord X is able to quickly and easily break Unused out of prison by taking him on a fishing trip, blowing up Rewrite's cell bars in the process and leaving lots of cash behind.
    • Between Season 2's fourth and fifth episodes, Unused was able to stare right at the camera in the exact same pose for an entire thirteen days without moving, eating or sleeping, something Majin lampshades in the latter episode.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Unused blurts this out in Episode 12 before Lord X teleports him out of his cell, much to Rewrite's frustration when Majin returns from the bathroom.
  • Once an Episode:
    • It's almost guaranteed that Unused will say "touché" and Majin will yell at the others to get out in each video. The exceptions to the latter so far are Episode 4, where Majin instead calls Nominal's Author Avatar to prepare recording for a song between him and Unused, and Episode 6, where the episode ends on a more light-hearted note with the two hosts getting along much better. Majin does catch onto this in the latter.
    • In any episodes where Unused isn't sitting in the same table as Majin, expect him to end the episode by yelling "BUZZ OFF!"
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • When Lord X shows up for the first time, Unused is genuinely unnerved and frightened by his presence, even going under a Freak Out once he accidentally looks into Lord X's eyes and wondering why Majin would even think about inviting him onto the show. He does get better, though.
    • During Episode 5.1, despite Majin wondering what's going on, neither Unused nor Majin are at each other's throats for even one second in the episode, considering the short's more serious nature concerning real-life issues.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Lord X delivers a funny one towards Unused at the end of Episode 9, where he warps him and Majin up to their ceiling unexpectedly and makes himself and Unused vanish, much to Majin's shock. So much so that Unused is outright absent from the tenth episode.
Lord X: We're going fishing now!
    Unused: What the hell?!
Lord X: To infinity... and deez NU-! (both vanish to an unknown place)
  • Pet the Dog: In Season 2 Episode 1, Noah the Fursuit states that Curse/Loss didn't deserve to go through all the crap he had to deal with, which surprises him a bit.
  • Prison Episode: Episode 11 sees the cast take a ride to federal prison, all instigated by Unused not paying his taxes. Episode 12 follows up on that episode, where Majin tries to negotiate with Rewrite to bail Unused out.
  • Running Gag:
    • In most episodes, one of the characters will mention trains that have derailed with planes on top of them as a joke. And if one doesn't derail? Episode 7 reveals that they somehow MAKE it derail anyway, just for Rule of Funny.
      • In Episode 5, Starved seems to take that a bit too seriously and summons Furnace carpet bombers over Manhattan, actually concerning the two hedgehogs. This ends up turning out to be lots of Furnace robots dropping carpets all over the place.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • In After Hours Episode 2, when Majin trying to tell Xanthus to Get Out! backfires, due to him being in the room that belongs to Xanthus, he just excuses himself.
    • In Season 2 Episode 7, when Unused refuses to play along with the Trolley Problem and just sing his own "cover" of "Free-4-Me", Majin finally has enough and makes his leave.
  • Serious Business: Once Starved calls for his Furnace carpet bombers to go to Manhattan, the jokes completely stop for around a minute, as both Unused and Majin both question what he's doing and clarifying that the "train with a plane on top derailing" things were all jokes and not to be taken seriously, and are both concerned about innocent people that could get killed. This drops after Starved comes clean and mentions that his Furnace robots are literal carpet bombers.
  • Speak in Unison: Unused and Majin accidentally do this with one another at the end of Episode 6, and they both have a good laugh about it, so much that the usual "GET OUT!" gag is left out.
    Unused: Yeah, I see,-
Unused and Majin: -for comedic purposes. Oh! Ayo? Bro. Wait... Nah! We're talking at the exact same time.
  • Special Guest: So far, Episodes 2, 3, 5, 8 and 10 of Season 1 feature a special guest that talks with Unused and Majin about the same assortment of random things. These special guests are Hog, Lord X, Starved, Coldsteel and Xanthus.
  • Standalone Episode: Episode 7 stands out from the others in that the jokes aren't used as often. Instead, the episode is used to showcase a teaser for an upcoming Friday Night Funkin' mod and a remake of one of Nominal's previous songs, "Lost My Mind".
  • Take That!:
    • Xanthus, while okay with being on the show, is understandably uncomfortable with being there initially due to some fans liking him in... questionable ways.
    • The VHS episode suddenly cuts to Unused pulling a Nightmare Face directly at the screen and give an outright hateful speech to an individual named "Jubilee", as a result of a real life person of a similar username harassing people using the vocal effects used for Unused's voice.
    • At the end of Season 2 Episode 5, Unused looks right at the camera once again, this time to call out any users who are even thinking about typing up explicit comments about what he was doing with his chilli dog, and that he'd get really mad if he saw any.
  • Take a Third Option: In Season 2 Episode 7, Majin tries to present the famous Trolley Problem to Unused, between getting a train to kill either one person or five people. The whole argument of this episode revolves around Unused wanting to do this in order to save everybody, one idea of which involves derailing the train.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes:
    • Coldsteel, of course, fits this to a T, so much so that Unused and Majin both complain about him inviting himself, and only several roasts from Unused make Coldsteel finally leave.
    • Come Boyfriend's debut episode, and he makes himself known just how bad of a Manchild he is, and both Unused and Majin straight-up can't stand him all throughout the episode.
  • The Piano Player: The fourth episode mainly focuses on Unused and Majin both playing the piano between each other. The songs that are played include "Endless", "Faker" (which stops after a few notes due to Majin feeling uneasy from it) and "Soulless", with the last one being completely original. A special episode rounds this section off with Unused and Majin doing the song while Nominal records it.
  • Uncertain Doom: In Episode 11, aside from Unused and Majin (and Tails Doll, who was seen falling off the truck partway through the travel to federal prison), it's never explained what happened to the other passengers, Mickey or the driver after the crash.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: While the earlier episodes involved a lot of bickering between the two of them, at the end of the day, Majin and Unused generally get along and enjoy making jokes as they do the show.
