Abusive Parents / Codex Equus

Go To

In Codex Equus, there are several bad parents to counter the number of Good Parents on the titular world.

  • High King Irminsul of the Elternteil Deer Pantheon is an infamous example, despite being on the side of 'good'.
    • He was this to Temnobog. Because Temnobog embodied mortal Deerkind's worst traits and a living reminder of the horrors Irminsul witnessed during the wars with Grogar, Irminsul treated Temnobog like an unwanted "cast-off" of his radiant twin brother, Belyolen, including giving him a name so horrible that Temnobog cast it aside even from his own memory once he left the pantheon. Irminsul also encouraged his other children and relatives to see Temnobog as an abomination that must be killed for the benefit of mortal Deerkind, leading to Temnobog being demeaned and beaten up. Another factor in the abuse is that Irminsul hated himself for being supposedly unable to get rid of his own flaws, so in his eyes, Temnobog was a living reminder of that failure. Eons of mistreatment that he never truly earned understandably caused Temnobog to become genuinely evil out of spite and vent his anger on Belyolen, though that stopped when Temnobog and Belyolen learned of their true natures (among other things) and reconciled.
    • He was also this towards Belyolen. While Irminsul deeply loved his radiant son, it's made apparent that part of his affection is fueled by his desire for an heir who was supposedly perfect and completely flawless. He showered Belyolen with love and praise that he never gave Temnobog (despite the latter being his son also), and taught Belyolen to see and oppose his dark-furred twin brother as an evil abomination that must be destroyed for mortal Deerkind's benefit. He also kept Belyolen from even seeing Temnobog out of fear that the latter would 'corrupt' the former, creating grave misunderstandings that led to Temnobog nursing a huge grudge against Belyolen, and was delighted when Belyolen started fighting Temnobog. Belyolen eventually gathered the courage to call out both Irminsul and the entire pantheon for their abusive hypocrisy thanks to Amour-De-Soi's encouragement, but it took years (and other factors) for him to reconcile with his brother because of their parents' influence.
    • He was also this towards Kúzelník. Though proud of Kúzelník's magical talent and accomplishments, Irminsul feared his son's potential to become an Evil Sorcerer like Grogar, so he only taught Kúzelník to use only the "good" side of his Sorcery domain, while discouraging Kúzelník from learning his domain's "evil" side. This gave Kúzelník a lot of insecurities, especially after discovering that his own father was responsible for creating the evils he was taught to hate, and struggled to reconcile the good and bad parts of his Sorcery domain for years. Irminsul also implied during a nasty argument between them that he wouldn't hesitate to purify his own children of their flaws should they fall below his standards; though it was by accident, it gave Kúzelník the absolute worst impression of his father, and led to him running away from home and developing a deep fear of Irminsul afterwards. Irminsul's treatment of Kúzelník also led to him seeking parental solace in Emperor Golden Scepter, who is a much better father figure than Irminsul ever was and even adopted Kúzelník as his son.
    • He was also this to his unborn son, High King Bogolenya. After having a prophetic dream about his unborn son potentially leading mortal Deerkind into a golden age, Irminsul vicariously treated him as My Greatest Second Chance, and persuaded his then-pregnant wife, Arvan, to let him "bless" their son with unparalleled compassion, purity, and virtue. What Irminsul intended to do was erase his son's inner evil so he'll be perfect and flawless, which not only killed the unborn fawn in-utero, but irrevocably divided him into his good and evil halves. Irminsul tried making up for this by lavishing the pure Belyolen with love and praise while abusing Temnobog for being born 'evil', despite Temnobog not doing anything to deserve it. Come the "Final Ragnarok Crisis", Bogolenya emphatically disowns the Elternteil Deer Pantheon as his family right after Symvíosi fuses Belyolen and Temnobog together to fight High King Ragnarøkkr, and names himself after the Bogolenya Deer Pantheon to separate himself from Irminsul's ambitions.
    • He was also this to Rhiannon, even though he was less involved in her upbringing than Arvan. Irminsul's extremely traditionalist mindset influenced Rhiannon to follow her family's beliefs and traditions out of duty despite her better judgement, in turn enabling her family's worst flaws and behaviors. But it wasn't until she learned from Cernunnos what Irminsul had done to their unborn brother and why Kúzelník ran away from home that she finally leaves the pantheon for good, terrified by the idea of being "purified" of her own flaws the moment she stops following her parents' expectations.
    • He was also this to Cernunnos. A combination of Parental Favoritism and extremely harmful teachings led to Cernunnos becoming just as bad as his father, which in turn influenced Cernunnos' antagonistic relationship with Temnobog as they grew up. Years later, after being sent on an ultimately failed hunt for the runaway Kúzelník, Cernunnos came back physically and mentally changed as a result of fusing with the spirit of his dead older brother Orion, and gaining the domain of Rebirth from him. Irminsul was excited over having one of his dead sons come back through a living one, which, combined with learning the truth of his unborn brother's fate, strained relations with Cernunnos and made his son incredibly cold and distant towards him. Eventually, Cernunnos leaves home for good, taking Rhiannon and many of his children with him, in order to figure out his own identity.
    • He was also this to Phoenix King Naur. Irminsul was extremely disappointed with his son for embodying Fire and expressed that via discouragement from using his Fire domain at all. Naur tried earning his father's approval at first, but witnessing Temnobog's abuse and learning the truth behind his 'evil' brother's existence (among other things) left him angry, bitter, and disillusioned with his father. The last straws were when Irminsul prevented Naur from judging a falsely-convicted Blue Suede Heartstrings fairly by replacing him with the xenophobic King Aspen, and refused to listen when Naur warned him of a disaster that eventually happened because of Irminsul's neglect. When Naur snapped and expressed his desire to leave, Irminsul outright tried restraining him with his divine power, and the ensuing fight destroyed much of their divine realm before Arvan intervened and let Naur go, even restraining Irminsul herself to keep him from going after their son. Although Naur led his own mortal/divine followers to prosperity in Caearnar, Irminsul's influence left him suffering from serious anger issues and an inferiority complex. Naturally, this drives him into the hooves of Emperor Golden Scepter, who loves/accepts him for who he is and adopts him as his son. High King Kaldr was horrified upon reading about Naur's upbringing.
High King Kaldr: Wow, Irminsul... you’ve really outdone yourself this time...
  • Subverted with Temnobog himself — while he embodies Deerkind's Evil and thus is no loving parent by normal standards, he really loves his children in his own way, even though he does encourage their innate evil as per his nature. He was really heartbroken when four of his children betrayed the family to either side with Ispita after she became a Fallen goddess, or commit heinous crimes that even Temnobog wouldn't approve of, but he still had to punish them according to their actions. So those who sided with Ispita were devoured and slowly digested, while the others were stripped of their powers and identities, and reduced to immortal playthings for the siblings that remained loyal to Temnobog. And while the Four Terrors commit very heinous acts in the name of their father, it's for altruistic reasons and they absolutely adore Temnobog, and he feels the same way.
  • Subverted with Tembnobog's surviving children, the Four Terrors. Like their father, each of the Four Terrors would sire children of their own with many Deer and non-Deer individuals (or sometimes each other) and encourage their inner evil as per their nature. However, aside from that, they are respectful and loving parents who praise their children for their accomplishments. Many of their sons and daughters, collectively known as the Deti Uzhasov, deeply love their parents back and follow their beliefs and ideals as a result.
  • Emperor Blackthorn, being the counterpart of Empress Blackrose in almost every way, is a horrible parent. When one of his First-Spawn sons, King Rhyniognatha, engineered what was called "The Fratricide" in an attempt to remain his father's sole favorite, Blackthorn sealed him yet did nothing about the traditions of backstabbing and treachery that would be common among his sons and other Summer Court Changelings — while it's debated in-universe whether he let it happen to punish his sons' incompetence, root out the weak among them, or just plain didn't care, the fact is that he still let his sons kill each other in their bids for power, and even encouraged it. However, he still respects most of them, especially if they had proven themselves worthy, and is generally careful enough to retain most of their loyalty (mostly by letting them do whatever they want so long as they help him run errands, and avoid doing anything to make them resentful of him).
  • The pony foster parents of Changeling King Lasius were corrupt and lazy nobles who profited from the suffering of their subjects, and used their own money to fund their lavish lifestyles. They did nothing to encourage Lasius's brilliant intellect, causing him to grow increasingly bored and frustrated at home, and it's implied that if they got word of his true character, they would've tried persuading him into acting like them. Lasius eventually got fed up with this behavior and secretly assassinated every single member of the nobility and the kingdom's royal family during a party that he threw just for them. It's telling when Lasius's benevolent half-sister, Golden Bell, turned a blind eye to the familicide and had considered doing the deed herself, and even Blackthorn was pleased with Lasius for having plotted the entire nobility/royalty's downfall.
  • Prince Blueblood's parents, also nobles, were controlling and emotionally abusive. When they weren't trying to mold him into the ideal unicorn, they were trying to make him develop tribalist attitudes towards non-unicorns, preventing him from playing with foals of non-unicorn nobles, and forbidding him from anything that seemed unbecoming of a unicorn noble. This left Blueblood feeling utterly miserable, to the point where it caused Celestia to take notice during a day in her court. When she learned why Blueblood looked so sad, Celestia immediately adopted him, and not only had Blueblood's parents escorted out when they protested, she also permanently banned House Platinum from her court. It's saying something when Blueblood made humorously ironic speeches for his parents' funerals years later, and treats Celestia like the mother he never had despite being officially Aunt and Nephew.
  • Sunny Mane Vaughoof, the father of Sunny Field Vaughoof and Moon Ray Vaughoof, was one. In life, Sunny Mane was an ill-tempered drunk who terrorized his friends and wife, and was physically and emotionally abusive to Sunny Field and Moon Ray. He frequently drank in front of his sons, influencing Moon Ray to become an addict later on, and had no qualms beating them, either, leaving Sunny Field and Moon Ray with permanent scars. Sunny Mane also resented having to raise a second foal, which served as another factor in his treatment of Moon Ray. While he had reasons for his behavior, they don't justify it and his sons were left with trauma that lasted even after death. Sunny Field's first entry also notes that he was a much better father when he wasn't drinking, as he once took his sons out fishing with no strings attached. Both Sunny Field and Moon Ray eventually forgave him, but made it clear they're only doing so to get rid of any influence he had over them.
  • The mortal father of Prince Touha, the Deer-Draconequus god of Lust, Passion, and Desire, was an abusive father in life. While he originally loved Touha and taught him how to play the violin, he started resenting his son for inexplicably retaining his beauty and vitality while he himself became feeble as he aged. He became so wicked and desperate that during a "Calling of the Terrors" event, he tried emotionally manipulating Touha into sparing him by evoking their familial ties as father and son. When Touha refused and killed him anyway, he spent his existence in Pokhot's hell-fief stewing in his own hatred towards his son for robbing him of what he felt was rightfully his. Despite the mistreatment he received, Touha loved his father so much that he sank into denial after killing/damning him, forcing Pokhot and his siblings to intervene when his denial went too far. It was only after visiting his father in Pokhot's hell-fief and being forced to see how much his father hated him that he realized the latter is too far gone to be redeemed, and moved on from his grief.
  • Ispita is a genuinely abusive Evil Matriarch. Unlike her ex-lover, Temnobog, who loves and praises his kids for testing mortals with their evil natures, Ispita only loves her children if they're loyal and useful to her and her plans. Notably, when two of her children, Kolektor and Dark Illustration, were defeated and/or killed, she reacted rather heartlessly, just shrugging and saying "Oh well, you win some you lose some" in regards to her latter son. She also viciously abused Cudnost for embodying Virtue (and thus being completely resistant to her attempts to corrupt her) to the point of leaving scars, and has expressed the desire to kill her during a confrontation with her pure daughter in the "Temptation Unbound" crisis. The Four Terrors remember her before her Fall as a lustful and sadistic yet loving mother, but when she became a Fallen goddess and caused four of their own siblings to side with her, the Four Terrors were utterly heartbroken, traumatized, and enraged by her betrayal.
  • Sweet Words, aka 'Mr. Boar', was extremely abusive towards Rosy Dreams, his daughter. He sexually abused her and controlling every aspect of his daughter's life because she resembled her dead mother, and used dream magic to create an insidiously blissful dream world that caters to Rosy's desires, but keeps her from leaving and allows him to continue molesting Rosy without her knowledge. When Rosy became increasingly defiant to the point of unlocking her Psychic Powers, he created a monstrous dream entity called 'The Chaser' just to keep Rosy trapped within her own mind, and didn't care if 'The Chaser' developed sapience as long as it did its job. Fortunately, Rosy would be rescued by Princes Bright Eyes and Written Word, but she took a long time to recover due to her sheer trauma, and the normally professional and unbiased Prince Night Shade furiously expressed his desire to skip the trial process and throttle the stallion himself. What makes this incredibly ironic is that he was once abused himself by his drunkard father as a colt, but he ended up following in his father's footsteps anyway despite having every opportunity to change.
  • The mortal parents of Queen Eclaira were rulers of a Third Age kingdom obsessed with beauty, fashion, and cuisines, and they bore children who were just as beautiful and fashionable as they. Unfortunately, when Eclaira was born mediocre-looking, her parents were emotionally and mentally abusive to her, showering endless disappointment on her for her apperance despite her efforts to keep up with her family, while doing nothing as their other royal children, their nobles' children, and their common subjects scorned, bullied, and abused her as well. Eclaira became a Big Eater to alleviate her increasing misery, but that only gave her family and subjects more excuses to torment her. Eventually, Eclaira snapped from the abuse, and with the help of Overlord Vondur (who became her adoptive uncle), she gained the knowledge, tools, and skills she needed to become the 'fairest of them all' and unleash her long-awaited Roaring Rampage of Revenge against her foalhood kingdom for its mistreatment. Naturally, Eclaira's own parents would be among those who were devoured, their beauty magically drained to enhance the physical beauty of their abused daughter.
  • War Rock sired hundreds of illegitimate foals throughout his life, but never cared for any of them and never bothered to check on them either, seeing them as unwanted consequences of his hedonistic lifestyle. In Princess Winter Opera's case, he wanted her aborted once he learned his girlfriend Mint Delight got pregnant, and dumped Mint Delight when she refused to kill her own child. When he and Winter Opera finally meet in person during the Fourth Age, he angrily expresses his desire to kill her after Winter Opera taunts him about not being able to become a god like she did. Understandably, his callously indifferent treatment and abandonment led to his surviving Ascendant children hating his guts with a burning passion.
  • War Rock's parents weren't much better either. After he revealed himself to be a musical prodigy as a colt, his parents, both of them perfectionists, encouraged his talents by pushing him hard to succeed in everything while spoiling him rotten to reward his successes. While he did eventually become a musician popular and talented enough to rival Blue Suede Heartstrings as the "King of Music", his upbringing not only turned him into a narcissistic sociopath, but also gave him an extreme intolerance for failure that evolved into a Mortality Phobia, turning him into one of the most monstrous supervillains of the Second Age.
  • For all intents and purposes, Dr. Binding Stich of the Alicorn Ascendancy is the 'father' of the living 'patchwork' pseudo-Alicorn, Patchwork. However, Binding Stitch saw Patchwork as little more than an experiment he made in his research of divine Ascension, and didn't bother giving him a proper name, only calling him his 'creation'. This eventually bites him in the flank when Patchwork, enraged by his creator's horrific callousness towards the foals he kidnapped and experimented on, confronts and fights Binding Stitch to protect said foals. Binding Stitch has the Pony parts he grafted onto himself brutally torn off, and spends his last moments begging for mercy and ranting about the world 'needing' him and his work before Patchwork kills him with a Neck Snap.
  • Subverted with Adversus, the Adversity Primeval. She has birthed two branches of children, the Adversai and the Efévresi; members of the former spread misfortune, conflict, and destruction, while members of the latter encourage innovation among divine/mortal sapientkind and oppose their mother. However, Adversus deeply loves all of her children and even encourages the Efévresi to oppose her, as growth through misfortune and conflict is a necessary part of survival. According to Ergaleía, he expected Adversus to be angry when he inspired sapientkind to oppose her and build inventions to help themselves weather her disasters, only to find his mother felt quite the opposite and hugged him. The only children Adversus does not love are those who cause destruction without purpose, like Surtr, whom she wanted dead for his sadism and his actions against Cervidia (and by extension, the Nine Realms).
  • Defied by High King Kaldr. After adopting a then-infant Flœrð, Kaldr learned his son is the central figure of a prophecy that would doom and destroy the Hoyklan Deer Pantheon, prompting his fellow deities to advocate for Flœrð's death and/or suppression. Thanks to Luminiferous and Choice, Kaldr realized that mistreating Flœrð for something that wasn't even his fault would not only make him similar to High King Irminsul, but also perpetuate a Vicious Cycle where many abused Cervidian Trickster Gods eventually betrayed their pantheons in revenge and hatred. He wisely decided to Screw Destiny by raising Flœrð like his own son and defending him from deities who wanted to kill him, leading to Flœrð becoming a hero instead of the villainous trickster he was expected to be.
  • Queen Krásná Tradice's father, an Alvslog Deer King, was this to her in life. Krásná's father was emotionally abusive, teaching his oldest daughter and child many bigoted and toxic traditions while becoming increasingly haughty, tyrannical, puristic, and paranoid overall. When he executed one of Krásná's brothers for being a Deer-Draconequus hybrid, Krásná was too terrified to act against her father and was haunted by the incident ever since. Even his love and protective feelings for his daughter didn't help him realize what he was doing and change. After his Karmic Death, Krásná continued clinging to her birth father's traditions despite her trauma because that's all she had. When Blue Suede Heartstrings adopts Krásná as his daughter centuries later, no one complained, though things were made a little awkward by Prince Stoltur Skjöldur, Krásná's half-brother, being Blue Suede's husband.
  • While it's not known whether he or Phykti is the true 'father' of Varázsló and Cselszövő, the Pony sorcerer known as 'The Knowledgeable Sorcerer' was essentially the twins' father-figure, and was extremely abusive to them. Among other things, he forced them to acquire and practice more magical power and knowledge, frequently made them participate in dangerous arcane experiments, and generally saw them as pawns in his plans. The last straw was when he discovered the 'Well of Eternity', which he threw Varázsló and Cselszövő into so he could discover its secrets without risking himself. Varázsló and Cselszövő miraculously survived, but their experiences turned them into insane, eldritch deities. He was killed and eternally damned by an enraged Pokhot and her family, but his actions left a huge impact on Varázsló and Cselszövő, who took a long time to recover due to their extreme trauma.
  • The creators of ALICE/Adelais were essentially her parental figures, but they only saw her as a weapon against the New Desides, and decided the best way to utilze her capabilities is to condemn her to an existence of eternal loneliness, able to see the pilot she was programmed to love and protect, but never be interact with or acknowledged by them in any way. This was noted to be an extremely cruel thing to do, with many divines and mortals condemning the action as soon as ALICE/Adelais' situation became public knowledge. After ALICE/Adelais died performing a Heroic Sacrifice against the Desides (which in the process turned her into a demigoddess), she would be adopted into the Trimortidae by Audens Manes, who realized how badly her creators mistreated her. According to Moon Ray Vaughoof and an Alicorn goddess of Malus Manes' line, those of ALICE/Adelais' creators who willingly isolated her despite knowing of the cruelty of their actions would be Dragged Off to Hell by Malus (who appropriately appeared as a demonic Gundam to them) and his children upon death, roasting eternally in their Hell-Realms as punishment for their crimes.
  • Prince Dissonant Tune's mortal stepfather is another example. Though a successful musician himself, he let his fame go to his head and started partaking in the Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll lifestyle. His stubborn refusal to listen to his wife's pleading for him to change led to her having a one-night stand with a vampirized War Rock, leading to Dissonant's birth. Though Dissonant loved and idolized his stepfather, even taking up music to earn his love, his stepfather hated and resented him for being a musical prodigy on top of being a bastard hybrid and abused Dissonant. Eventually, after failing to maintain his fading celebrity status, Dissonant's stepfather killed his mother in a fit of maddened rage, and would have gone after Dissonant as well had the neighbors not heard the ruckus and called the police on him, spurring him to commit suicide instead. Dissonant was traumatized by the incident, and this factored into him developing a hatred for Abusive Parents as an adult.
  • Blue Goldstone's stepfather was of the emotional variety at first. While he meant well, he held traditional, toxic views of masculinity and strongly disapproved of both Gold's "wimpy" personality and musical aspirations. His response to Gold's grief over his birth father's death and disillusionment towards Blue Suede Heartstrings was to tell him to "man up" and move on because Men Don't Cry. This only contributed to Gold's downward spiral into bitter apathy and depression, which indirectly led to his early death. It wasn't until after meeting Blue Suede Heartstrings in the Heaven-Realms and reconciling with him many years later that Gold finally gained the courage to call out his stepfather on his emotional abuse. After a period of self-reflection, Gold's stepfather finally accepted him for who he is and was proud of Gold for Ascending to godhood.
  • Valefor is this to a truly monstrous degree. His raising of his adopted daughter Cinder I can be described less as a whelphood and more as Cold-Blooded Torture. He had his minions beat her nearly to death to force her to learn to fight and kill from a young age, refused to even give her a name until she'd been properly made into his living weapon, had her organic tail and wing blades torn out and replaced with organic metal ones while they were still red hot and she was fully conscious the entire time, and finally corrupted her into a monstrous adult form incapable of feeling benevolent emotions. While nicer to Cinder II, he's only so in order to abuse Cinder I more by showing her a version of herself who received anything resembling compassion. Even then, she still has metal blades, implying he gave her a similar augmentation, and after she defects he naturally has no remorse about trying to kill her, despite her being his biological daughter.
  • Lucky Shot's paternal grandparents, both Unicorn nobles, were incredibly emotionally abusive as well as unrepentant bigots. Their parenting spurred their son, Lucky Shot's father, to run away from Canterlot and marry a common mare, who would become Lucky Shot's mother. To get their son back, Lucky Shot's grandparents arranged for Tribalists to kill Lucky Shot's mother... but it backfired when the Tribalists instigated a bombing, killing both Lucky Shot's mother and father while heavily scarring him. Lucky Shot's grandparents then took him in, hired the Striga family to transfer his soul into the body of a Unicorn colt to "fix" his Earth pony genes, gave him a name he absolutely hated, and tried molding him into the "ideal" Unicorn noble scion. Lucky Shot was so miserable that when robbers broke into his home, he begged them to take him away, setting up a chain of events that led to Lucky Shot's grandparents being exposed and arrested by Princess Twilight/Amicitia Sparkle. However, they also ruined Lucky Shot's life in such a way that death was inevitable... but luckily, he would gain a friend and "Uncle" in Moon Ray Vaughoof.
  • Mighty Valley's biological parents were, in the words of the Terran Royal Family, "utter failures as parents in every conceivable way". They left her behind as a baby in the carriage she arrived home in after her birth, and they were hedonists who preferred to sate their own desires instead of looking after her. Her father blatantly favored her older brother, and spent much of his time training his son to become a con artist like him. Mighty Valley's parents were also staunch anti-intellectuals, which triggered her Psychic Powers — her father punished her for reading by tearing up one of her books and forcing her to listen to a mindless radio show against her will, leading to Mighty Valley unconsciously making the radio explode with psychic telekinesis. When her parents came under investigation by Grittish authorities, Mighty Valley took the chance to make them sign parental custody over to her teacher, Honey Bee, who had been a much better parental figure to her than them. This was declared by many In-Universe to be the one good thing her parents did for her, though it didn't save them from being arrested after they tried fleeing the country.
  • Each of the Dark Purveyors had horribly abusive childhoods, which makes their adoption by the Four Terrors all the more relieving for them.
    • Prince Dühroham Erobreseg's parents were warmongering nobles who treated their son like a weapon, experimenting on him since foalhood and even stamping out his empathy (though they didn't outright remove it, for which Dühroham considered himself lucky). Any failure on his part was met with harsh punishment. When a chance encounter with Blue Suede Heartstrings caused Dühroham to realize what he and his parents were doing is wrong, his parents amped up the abuse believing he had gotten "soft". He eventually snapped when he was sent to commit genocide against a peaceful Erobreseg Deer kingdom, massacring the army he was part of. A sojourning Yarost found and adopted Dühroham, with Dühroham's parents killed in the following "Calling the Terrors" sanction, but his foalhood abuse was so horrific that it took him a long time to overcome his psychological conditioning. After Ascending to godhood, Dühroham returned the favor by punishing his parents' damned shades for their crimes, including subjecting them to the same experiments that they performed on him as a foal.
    • Princess Voľná Láska's parents were former Erobreseg Deer who rebelled against their herds' ways and became Neo-Alvslog Deer, ruling over the community Voľná was born in. However, they became increasingly xenophobic and depraved, encouraging their subjects to take hallucinogenic drugs and do "recreational activities" with the wildlife. When Voľná developed precognition, they turned her into a Junkie Prophet and exploited her prophecies. Voľná's childhood friend, Tiszta, was betrayed by a snitch for helping her and subjected to a Cruel and Unusual Death as punishment. By the time Pokhot found Voľná, she was suffering from a drug overdose. Voľná's parents were subsequently killed in a "Calling the Terrors" sanction for their crimes, but their abuse and Tiszta's death caused her to turn to drug addiction to cope with her trauma. It took Moon Ray Vaughoof's intervention for her to snap out of her delusions and accept Tiszta's death, but her recovery was still a rather difficult and rocky one. No one complained when Moon Ray adopted Voľná as his daughter later on.
  • Blacktip's parents were implied to be emotionally abusive, as they were disappointed in him for not following the ways of their people, i.e. "be a greedy, brutish Dragon who pillages other civilizations for fun". This in part contributed to Blacktip's overall misery and self-loathing that would plague him for most of his life.
  • Queen Gossamer, one of the most depraved Griffon Autorists in the Fourth Age, never showed any sort of maternal love for her daughter, Gossamer II, only grooming her to be a Pony-hating psychopath just like her. When she died, Gossamer II was left psychologically broken. Even Monarch Wing, who suffered under Queen Gossamer II's rule, couldn't help but pity her. During her Battle in the Center of the Mind with Monarch Wing, Gossamer reveals she only sees Gossamer II as a "disappointment" and planned to use her daughter as a host body for her own soul after using Monarch Wing's as a temporary host. Fortunately, she is rendered Deader than Dead by Monarch Wing before it could happen. After Monarch Wing Ascends as a Hippogriff demigoddess, she reincarnates Gossamer II as an innocent newborn chick so she can be raised with genuine love the next time around.
  • The parents of Shadow Song, while encouraging of her musical aspirations and talents, were also both perfectionists who had their own ideas on what "proper" music was. They forbade Shadow Song from playing rock music and forced her to play classical music instead, which she was really good at, but left her extremely miserable. When Ivory Towers came to power, Shadow Song's parents pressured her to join Ivory Incorporated, damning her to a lifetime of Faustian slavery (as she formed a pact with one of Ivory Towers' demons, Dākukoin, just to please her parents) and leading to her being "trained" (i.e. abused) by Ivory Towers herself. Understandably, even after breaking free from Ivory Towers and becoming good with help from the Dazzling Divas, Shadow Song was traumatized and suffered nightmares of her experiences. It turns out her parents genuinely didn't know what they pushed their daughter into, and they were horrified when they learned the truth. They have since reconciled, with Shadow Song's parents finally allowing her to pursue her own dreams after repenting for their mistakes.
  • Much like Ragyō Kiryūin, Silk Dawn was a horribly abusive mother in all aspects. In addition to Ragyō's canon treatment of her daughters Satsuki Kiryūin and Ryūko Matoi (who are both depicted here as demigoddesses May Shore and Wandering Child, respectively), Silk Dawn sexually molested many of her other children under the excuse of "purifying" them and indoctrinated them to follow her twisted standards of perfection. She essentially mutilated her firstborn daughter, White Corona, by dividing traits she believed made her "imperfect", leading to the births of twin sisters Yellow Barding and Blue Diadem. Rose Regalia, meanwhile, was groomed by her to be a perfect enforcer of her plans, turning Rose Regalia into a Spoiled Brat until she was shown what true love and affection actually is. She was so monstrous that she saw nothing wrong with how High King Irminsul treated his unborn son and praised the Deer sovereign on his ambitions. Predictably, her abusive treatment of her children caused many of them to betray her, ultimately leading to her defeat, death, and postmortem punishment.
  • The birth parents of Queen Peínagápia were the previous rulers of a Tauren Giant Pantheon she was once part of, and the ones directly responsible for all the misery she suffered in her early years. When she was born exceptionally beautiful and charismatic, her birth parents feared she would become as evil as Fallen deities like Morning Star if she didn't learn self-restraint, and indoctrinated her to always be selfless, humble, and loving to the point of psychological self-repression. This had enormous consequences later on, as Peínagápia eventually snapped from the pressure and everyone taking advantage of her love, transforming her into a demonic, love-hungry goddess and inflicting her with guilt over the possibility of becoming an irredeemable monster. Fortunately, she gains a more loving family in Amareros and his children, the Amaredae, but it's safe to say that she has come to hate her birth parents once she realized the implications of their puristic teachings.
  • Hol Horse's father was violently abusive to him and beat him quite frequently, with Hol Horse's older sister trying to protect him by bearing the brunt of their father's beatings. One day, the beatings got especially bad, causing Hol Horse to manifest his Stand, Emperor, for the first time and fatally shoot his father. While his father undoubtedly deserved it, the incident traumatized Hol Horse so much that he forgot how and why he manifested Emperor in the first place. He only remembers it many years later when he is helping the Stardust Crusaders fight his ex-boss, Godly Brand, who was just as abusive if not worse than Hol Horse's father had been.
