It’s good but the book was better

I actually like this movie quite a bit. It’s considerably darker than the film to which it was a sequel but that was the case in the book as well.

I also find that Rupert Grint plays Ron’s arachnophobia quite well such that Ron voluntarily going to the Forbidden Forest and braving his greatest fear is extremely well dramatized. And how Ron is the one who intuitively distrusts Tom Riddle. And that gives the lie to the claim that the films were unfair to Ron.

I don’t have a problem with Hermione being the one to explain to Harry the meaning of the Fantastic Slur mudblood considering that it’s unlikely that she wouldn’t have come across it when she familiarized herself with everything about the Wizard World, presumably including the history of the recent war.

I like how Neville lampshades the fact that he’s the Butt-Monkey.

I do have some problems with adaptational deviations. When the car nearly crashes into the train and the duel with the Basilisk becomes drawn out, I was fine with those dramatizations.

That said, I like the Kick the Dog moment that Tom the Dark Lord gets when he gloats over Harry’s death bringing up Fawkes crying before remembering that Phoenix tears have healing properties. And I don’t like how the movie omitted it.

And I also don’t like how it omitted Tom’s Freudian excuse for his Fantastic Racism.

All in all, it’s still pretty well-adapted though I think the book was better.
