The most disappointing film I have ever seen.

The hype for the 2013 Disney film Frozen is gargantuan. Many reviews have been positive, and it won "Best Animated Film" at the Oscars. It's become an international mega-hit. In my opinion, it didn't deserve so much praise. At all. When I sat down to watch Frozen with my parents and brother I was expecting something truly big. A huge movie, something filled with constant joy, adventure, beauty and Pixar-level ingenuity. I didn't get any of this. This is easily one of the most depressing animated films I've ever watched, and also one of the most annoying.

It's a very frustrating movie for me to watch. There are dozens of plot holes, several annoying songs which come out of nowhere (including the dreadful and tacked-on "Fixer Upper"), bland characters and loads of angst. In my eyes, it's Twilight meets Glee meets the icy landscape of Narnia. The journey to find Elsa isn't exciting enough, and when she is found, she promptly kicks them out of her ice castle. Elsa, in fact, is a character who comes off as miserable through so much of the movie, all because of a mild accident during their childhood. The whole "I don't want to hurt you" thing really bugs me. She isn't a werewolf.

And to support my statement on the dozens of plot holes, look no further than the Headscratchers page for this film. It's one of the largest I've ever seen and stuffed with debates, which pretty much proves the fact that the plot needed major improvement for it to work. And sadly, in my honest opinion, hardly anything works. It just isn't fun, and when it tries to be fun (Fixer Upper) it fails at it. It's a weepy soap opera full of clichés. Sure, Olaf's kinda cute, the animation's solid, there a few laughs. But everything else really disappointed me. I'd only recommend this to young and teenage girls, personally, because I can only see this as a princess movie. I hated it, my brother hated it, my father hated it... hell, even my own mother wasn't big on it, though she liked it more than we did. In all honesty, I think it's a million miles behind the excellence of so many other computer-animated films, for example the underrated "Arthur Christmas", a magnificent winter movie which deserves way more attention in my opinion.

I am wracking my brain trying to understand this comparison.

So many dozens of plotholes that you couldn't think of any specific ones to mention? God, this movie sounds awful. Also while mostly I just disagree with your opinion, it's a straight-up lie that the size of the Headscratchers page 'pretty much proves' that the movie is full of plotholes. Popular movies/games/books have bigger Headscratchers sections solely because more people have seen them.

If you thought the plot was 'an indecipherable mess' I have no idea how you'd make it through any movie more complex than 'The Room'.

The headscratches page's size depends on popularity, not quality. I'm guessing, like many other pages, several of the headscratches have been answered, several others are nitpicks that even the posters didn't take seriously, questions not about the work itself but hypotheticals, etc. etc.

Do you realize that your statement about Disney Princess movies being for "young and teenage girls" is sexist? You're free to like or dislike any movie as you see fit, but implying that things designed for girls are stupid or shaming the periphery demographic (and I have male friends and family members ranging from three to fifty who loved this movie) is just wrong.

I'm not being sexist. It's true that the primary target audience for the Disney Princess brand is females, just like the primary target audience for Transformers is males. As a kid, I never actually watched any of the Disney movies focusing on princesses, and neither did any of my non-female school friends. I had no interest in princess musicals, and I still don't. However, I did watch films like The Jungle Book, The Lion King, Pinocchio, Robin Hood, and of course Toy Story, which were aimed mainly at both genders.

I wasn't shaming the periphery demographic; I just found the film so boring, sappy, poorly written and full of cheesy Glee-ish singing, and this is what most undemanding females enjoy, just like most undemanding males enjoy noisy, poorly-plotted Transformers violence. It's not sexism, it's the truth. I estimate 90% of Frozen fans are females and only 10% are males. I could not imagine young boys being excited to see Frozen, but rather being dragged along to it and hoping for the best.

I just don't get it. I really don't see why this film is such a huge success. Especially since Elsa and Anna are so disconnected through much of the film. It's depressing. They say Covers Always Lie, and the DVD cover really makes the film look more about all these characters having an adventure together, but it's nothing like that. Also, I know many people are sick of it as well - "Let It Go" is hugely overplayed and has waaaaay too many covers versions on YouTube.

The weird thing is, I never even knew of that song's existence until I saw the movie a couple months ago.

I agree with this guy. All the hype really ruined it for me. My family and I were very disappointed, though we did like Elsa and her scene with building her castle. However, Anna was pretty annoying in my opinion, especially compared to Elsa and Kristoff.

I'm also a fifteen-year-old girl and like TT 454's mom, my mom didn't really care for it, either.

And TT 454 is right: the fanbase for Frozen IS mostly girls. No sexism there. About every girl in my class thinks it's the best movie to ever exist, whereas the boys couldn't care less or just never seen it. My dad, brother, and male cousins didn't care for the movie, while my youngest female cousin is in love with it. Obviously, not all girls adore Frozen (just ask my mom, sister, older female cousins and I), but you're still right on the money about the fanbase.

The people I know who are fans of Frozen are split almost evenly between guys and girls. Most of them are adults. (My dad enjoyed the movie; my mom was mostly ambivalent.)

All this evidence is anecdotal. It's impossible to say whether the fanbase is "mostly" girls or guys when the sample taken is less than a percent of a percent of the total viewership of the movie.

I started singing a song from it absentmindedly while in a study group for a business class, and another dude, a German exchange student, exclaimed how much he loved the movie.

The film is also extremely popular among a lot of people in the musical theatre scene, regardless of gender, from my experience.

So one anecdote is as good as any other.

Totally what I think of the movie. TT 454, can you read minds?

By the way, headscratchers gather when the work is confusing (and that is bad), has plotholes or for general hilarity. I applaud whomever answered all of the headscratchers with magic.

It's a fact..

Renaming It Just Bugs Me to Headscratchers has done precisely nothing to limit the amount of thinly-veiled complaints. I wouldn't use a page's size as evidence for anything.

... Did somebody honestly call the reviewer sexist for saying the Disney Princesses are marketed towards girls?

Anyways. This movie was a lot like Attack on Titan for me. When it came out, everyone was all like "OM Gzz its the totally best thing ever of all time" but I apparently missed that train. So, yeah. I agree with you, reviewer. Also, it may just be me, but I think that Gaston did the whole "seems like normal love interest but actually the bad guy" waaay better, or at least, he was more enjoyable.

The Disney Princesses are obviously marketed towards girls, but TT 454 said in his review that literally no one outside of that demographic could possibly enjoy this.

Also, Gaston tells the audience that he's not the love interest during the song where he first appears.

21 year old dude here, saw it with my girlfriend. Honestly not enough credit is given to the very subversive,self-aware properties it has. Not to mention the very catchy animation, and it does have a lot laughs in it. Wouldn't call it the best thing in the world,or even all that great for Disney, but I liked well enough

The characters are all still fairly likable.

And as for plot holes, while I don't disagree, I'll note that most movies period are going to have some kind of hole in them. None of them are that distracting.

As for headscratchers, yes popularity has a lot to do with it, if a film doesn't have much word on it,who'll pick it apart?

Okay, I edited the review to add more reasoning for not enjoying it, and made it not sexist. I apologise for accidentally sounding so.

I just think Arthur Christmas deserves the fame Frozen got. When I saw Arthur Christmas, I was thrilled beyond words at the immense creativity of it. Frozen has so little creativity compared to AC.

Gamera85 Since: May, 2014

Arthur Christmas was released in 2011. To claim Frozen stole it's fame is a bit silly in my opinion. While I enjoyed that film as well, the themes of it and Frozen are wildly different. Also, it would be a more accurate claim if Frozen came out in 2011 as that would be in proximity to its release and thus one could make the case that it was overlooked in favour of Frozen. As it stands, Arthur Christmas was not hurt by Frozen's creation, either in the box office or video release. It also earned a pretty reasonable gross while it was in theatres and sufficient praise from critics and viewers.

This has nothing to do with your opinion, I just feel it's a bit factitious to say Arthur Christmas was robbed because of Frozen. If you offered another animated film released at the same time as Frozen that you feel deserved more attention, sure you can make that argument. But Arthur Christmas... the two movies are so far removed from each other I don't see your reasoning in blaming Frozen for it not being as popular.

I don't get why it was such a big success, either. To me, it's mediocre when compared to all that Disney has done in the past. I agree with most of what you said. I think there are some redeeming elements, but Frozen is killed by the lackluster story.

My brother wasn't too keen on it, either. He once started to write down a rant related to his feelings with the movie. This is most of what he's written down so far:

"One of the many oddities of the general public's positive response to Frozen is they want to fill the colossal voids in its incredibly broken plot with their own ideas and biases. They base these opinions not on the content of the film but on the idea of the film.

A good example would be this quote of Idena Menzel:

Frozen is "a bit of a feminist movie for Disney. I'm really proud of that. It has everything, but it's essentially about sisterhood. I think that these two women are competitive with one another, but always trying to protect each other – sisters are just so complicated. It's such a great relationship to have in movies, especially for young kids."

At what point in the movie are these two sisters actually competitive?!?!?! Competition usually comes from comparison and similarities between sisters yet most of the story elements in Frozen involve isolating and separating the two sisters from each other, giving them little opportunity to compare themselves to one another. They are so estranged they don't have any point of reference for rivalry.

What is so compelling about this "sisterhood" for which this movie supposedly revolves around? Like everything else associated with this film, the answer is purely surface and superficial. They are sisters, and they are both the main characters, therefore, the movie is about sisterhood. That's good enough right?! At least these kids are too stupid to question it any farther. But the key ingredient that is missing from this "sisterhood" is the idea of a relationship bond being formed between these two sisters. Ideally this would be a compelling relationship but I would just settle for any sort of relationship. But it doesn't truly exist.

Jennifer Lee is the first Women to direct a Disney film (a shame it took them this long.) But what many people probably don't realize is that her job was mostly in directing the story… AND IT SHOWS. This script is so nauseatingly girl power and at the same time portrays women so one dimensionally it seems it should have ticked off everybody."

For the record, I think the "kids are too stupid" line was meant to be sarcasm.

Arthur Christmas was a great movie. Hell, I actually consider it one of the best Christmas movies made in YEARS. I mean, after having to deal with shit like Christmas With The Kranks, it's finally nice to get a holiday movie that is actually a good movie with a ton of effort put into it.

Funny thing is I didn't think the movie was all that great at first, but after rewatching it, I enjoyed it a lot more. I just find it fun.
