Since this is now in-universe with all the waff split off to useful notes, we can take the YMMV banner off can we not?

Edit: Banner has been removed, wicks all checked and anything not in-character either redirected to the Useful Notes page or made in-universe if possible.

Some non in-universe examples excised and a No Real Life Examples tag added to keep the natter, personal accounts, and speculation off page.

So if im understanding correctly the page is now for when a Trigger Event happens to a character in a work and we have a useful notes to explain to readers what a Trigger is?

I'm not sure this should be collapsed. I just think the name is terrible. The trope is about people not understanding PTSD and how it really works, don't destroy it, just rename it, or send it back to ykttw.

I also think a rename is good, if the name is that terrible or problematic. I was just trying to think of a simple, easily found name that 1) someone could search if suddenly they're being screamed at about triggering someone and they don't even know what a "trigger" is and 2) wasn't a joke or making light of the issue.

I think it's actually not a subtrope or different type of Berserk Button, but actually a supertrope of Berserk Button, I Need a Freaking Drink, and some others. It's not solely a Fan Fic trope, as triggering content can and does exist in any media, and can be depicted in any media. It is a Fan Speak and Meta-Concepts trope depicted and discussed repeatedly in the fan community.

I think there is a legit trope here. If there are no objections, I think I'll delist it. A rename can be discussed in the TRS subforum.

I originally cutlisted this article and I think this is a good solution.

Don't rename this. This is the official name for the phenomenon. Or if you do rename it, leave this as a redirect.

Might I note that the page name is already well-known fanspeak such that it might not be a good idea to rename the trope?

How about "PTSD Trigger"? It's still perfectly descriptive but not as generic as just "Trigger".

Groovy.

Note: triggers can happen within works, too. The "trigger for negative behavior" is standard procedure for Mamchurian-style brainwashing!

The other sort of trigger can happen in fiction, too, though it might not get called that. For instance, if you are afraid of heights, then looking down to see a very long distance between you and the ground is a trigger that, if you don't have Heroic Resolve, will leave you frozen in place and unable to act.
