When it comes to video games, isn't the earliest KNOWN example/instance of the "Scooby Doo Hoax" shown at the end of Mega Man 2, when the "Alien" you end up fighting turns out to be nothing more than Dr. Wily controlling some sort of drone (with the whole room being a hologram or something like that)?
