Well, I bet India kind of fits, with so many rape cases and all. I'm not suggesting we include this as an example though, I know how controversial this issue is.

With all due respect, TV Tropes, you really should remove the first sentence from the last paragraph, because, by having it, you’re sounding like you’re a perfect example of the issue of Political Correctness Gone Mad. Like it or not, sometimes things need to be said, or otherwise, things can’t get better.

I found "Erenisch Comics" whilst navigating through darker corners of the Internet. I was tempted to add them to the Web Comics section - with a caveat about their being NSFW and that a degree of brain-bleach may be needed afterwards. (They manage to combine excellent comic art with some truly nasty, horrible, gender politics).

Rule of Cautious Editing Judgement presumably applies - these things would come under the "No Porn" rule?

For the blessedly unknowing: all you need to know about Erenisch is that the comics are scifi/fantasy. They are set in a Crapsack World 20 Minutes into the Future where the MRA have seemingly taken over the asylum and enacted the Compulsory Female Slavery Act (2022) where virtually all women are slaves to men. With all that implies. The art is good, but the mind-set is not a healthy one.

The pertinent rule is listed on The Content Policy and the 5P Circuit.

Ah. Thank you. As Erenisch Comics are quoted in several other parts of tvtropes and have been allowed to stand, I wondered if this was something of a "grey area". I find them morally questionable, but they have been used as trope examples elsewhere on the wiki. now I can quote Excuse Plot and "guro" as reasons not to use them here - the flimsy plot is an excuse for long depictions of fairly brutal sexual humiliation and torture of women. I'll check the other references to Erenisch around the wiki and weigh up flagging them for 5P attention.

ah, most of it's already been done; the links that come up when you search on Erenisch are just empty pages. Found this discussion;

so - just find those one or two other mentions I'm sure I've seen in tropes pages and this work is done!

How is this not truth in television in Saudi Arabia and other Middle-Eastern countries where women have been beaten for showing too much skin?

Becaue the Middle East isn't completely made up of your misogynistic strawmen. It's actually quite a complex place with countries ranging in levels of sexism. You might want to have given examples for your racist bullshit.

I removed the Lord of the Rings reference. I mean seriously? How is Lot R in ANY way this trope? The only thing we know about Dwarf gender relations is that we don't know ANYTHING about Dwarf gender relations. The best we have is that only 1/3rd of the Dwarf population is female, and that men and women are very much alike in voice and appearance (Gimli's dialog in the Two Towers film adaptation was drawn from Tolkien's notes on the subject, including that both males and females are bearded). Also, both male and female Dwarves are so choosy about their mates that if the one they want is unavailable—either already hitched, or because they're "in love" with their crafting—they will never accept another.

There's nothing else at all known about Dwarf society to say whether their women are oppressed in any way whatsoever.

Would the Bene Tleilax women of the Dune series count as a (rather extreme) example of this trope? ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bene_Tleilax -Axlotl Tanks)

Being made brain-dead and then turned into a living womb/manufacturer of whatever the males deem necessary/are being paid for is a poor way to treat women in any environment.

"* A combination of traditionally valuing male children greatly with limits on the number of children per family has left China a rough place to be born a girl. Generally, your possible outcomes are "get killed so they can have another child who's hopefully a boy this time", "get given away to an emotionally and physically neglectful government-run orphanage where dying or being rendered psychotic by neglect are very real possibilities", or "Get sold to the Yakuza as a prostitute." When a life of prostitution is one of your best prospects if you're a girl, it's not unfair to call your country this."

What?! No seriously, what fuck is this shit?! Yes, the people of China tend to be a sexist bunch, yes, gender stereotypes are reinforced and shoved down throats, and yes, boys have been valued over girls. But women have been getting well employed since '49, including in the Army, industrial factories and politics (yay for Communism, post-war economy and lack of work force). It's not a feminist's dream in any way, and there are no leading ladies in top companies or government positions, but the "best prospects" for a girl is to be a whore? Seriously, is the reality doing well in your universe? If this were true, most of the country today would just be a building giant brothels.

It is tough out in the country, on the farms and in less industrialised cities but there's a lot more choices for women than what you think and there are many loopholes to the one-child policy. As for the big cities, I'm guessing you've never been to one; all the women on the streets are not walkers. Say what you will about the authoritarian government, the xenophobia, the backwards social support and the giant abyss between the classes but it's not some kind of Handsmaid's Tale uber-Dystopia. Kindly do your research next time before Ass Pulling.

Unless you genuinely think the highest job for a Chinese woman is to be a hooker, in which case I have no more to say.

And FYI: The Yakuza is Japanese. China has a Hei She Hui (loosely translated to "The Black Community" and no, not of that kind.). All Asians Are Not The Same.

Erm... I know the Yakuza is Japanese. The thing is, large criminal enterprises tend to work in countries other than their own. I have in fact heard reports of the Yakuza operating in China to buy off unwanted Chinese babies as sex workers back in Japan — since they're relatively inexpensive and can be raised into the life. Said reports may be inaccurate, but they aren't as delusional as you portray them.

By your standard, the Mafia has never once operated anywhere but Silicy, and any claims that it's the Mafia rather than local gangs is nonsensical — as are similar claims about the Russian Mafiya outside Russia, the Triad Societies outside Hong Kong, etc. Which is patently absurd.

I did overgeneralize the phenomenon, but it does occur — it's not just baseless nonsense. I should have been more specific about where it occurs — primarily in rural areas, indeed.

And I never said China was devoted to brothels or street walkers — Yakuza was an intentional description, not just an "All Asians Are The Same" bit of nonsense, so said hookers, where they exist, would presumably exist primarily in Japan.

I had never had any "standard", I never claimed to be an expert on Mafia policies, and I never made any broad sweeping generalisation about how organised crime might work, which is more than I can say for what you wrote. I don't hold "delusions" that sex trafficking doesn't exist, or that it's not bad China, or that the Chinese and Japanese crime rings aren't involved. But you made it sound like that's the life of each girl, every girl, every time and all the time, no exceptions. And seriously, fuck no.

Also, what about that stuff about orphanages and casual infanticide? Every child is registered when they're born; do you really think a child of healthy parents can be "given away to an orphanage" without raising eyebrows? Or that Chinese parents are capable of casual murder just to have a son? Of course it happens, and if you're poor enough, hungry enough, desperate enough (like those in underdeveloped villages, rural areas, farmlands are) people do a lot of sick, twisted shit. But "it does occur" is giant warp-speed lurch away from what you've implied, which is no exceptions to the rule. Which, again, no.

"This trope works on the unspoken assumption that other cultures are inherently dysfunctional and barbaric and they don't take time to make it logical or realistic or even show the truth, choosing to generalize and shock instead."

I've never once seen the trope used as a blanket metaphor for "all other cultures." (There are plenty of other common tools used to make other cultures appear barbaric and dysfunctional.) It's a very specific cultural phenomenon, and it's usually used in a fantastic setting, though most extreme depictions of misogyny in fiction do take at least some inspiration from real-world analogues. As for "making it logical" - how does one depict the oppression of women in a logical fashion?

I've never once seen the trope used as a blanket metaphor for "all other cultures."

That'd be because you're the first person to do that, right now. Note how the page says "other cultures" and not "all other cultures". Also note how it says assumption, not metaphor. This trope's purpose is not to make other cultures look barbaric, it is the result of the assumption that other cultures are barbaric.

And "not logical or realistic" means that instead of actually finding out the exact nature of the situation, its worst possible scenario is taken, and presented casually to the audience as the general lifestyle. Not that (God help us) we're expecting oppression to be presented in a logical manner. How'd you misinterpret this so bad?

In short, this is the cultural version of Hijacked by Jesus; exaggerating foreign culture stigmas Up To Eleven to a ridiculous degree, for dramatic effect.
