Did you read the trope description? This isn't all examples of facial hair, or impressive facial hair. It's about facial hair that's explicitly linked to masculinity. Including all examples of facial hair would be People Sit on Chairs, and we don't want that.
Edited by WalkinshadowsThat doesn't change the fact that "Manly Facial Hair" is still a redundant trope name. Men are the only ones who can grow facial hair, so why call it "manly"? It's like having a trope called "Car on Wheels", it's just stating something ridiculously obvious. Except in this case, "Manly Facial Hair" could be applied to literally any dude under the sun. If anything, the title just seems to make it more likely for people to misuse it as People Sit on Chairs.
Edited by MatthewWayne Trust no one.Not all facial hair is "manly", which you would understand, if you read the description, which very clearly states "And note that not all facial hair is manly — a Porn Stache might make people giggle instead, and a Wizard Beard serves more to make them look wise and old." The problem is with people refusing to read trope descriptions.
I think you're misunderstanding what I'm griping about. I know that not all types of facial hair are associated with "masculinity", as different types of facial hair can make you think different things about a person depending on what kind of character he is, like you said. But facial hair by default always is associated with men period. There's no trope called "Feminine Facial Hair", because women can't grow it (or if they can, it's very rare you can find one who does). So calling facial hair "manly" as a general term just feels like it's Shaped Like Itself in my mind. I get the description explains what this trope is about, but the title by itself just annoys me.
Trust no one.Women can grow facial hair (in fact, women getting their faces waxed to remove unwanted facial hair is a booming industry worldwide) and the trope would apply to female characters too IF the facial hair was used to help further characterize the female character as being more masculine, i.e. more "manly". To be clear, while "manly" can mean literally "things related to men", it is more or less used as a synonym for "masculine". So if you have no issues with a trope called "Masculine Facial Hair" which is for all facial hair used to emphasize the masculinity of a character, then you shouldn't have an issue with this title either.
... why not simply moving here all the pre-existing examples that are already in the main pages for Badass Beard and Badass Mustache? Feels weird to have a merger trope that doesn't carry over things it is merging.
Hide / Show RepliesPlease read the TRS thread. We don't want a new trope that inherits all the problems of the old ones.
Ok, makes sense. But if I may suggest something: write a good, solid Laconic version of this new trope. Because you are otherwise going to end up with 90% of it being ZCEs and/or People Sit on Chairs. One of the joys of Laconics is that they prevent those things happening in the bud
Am I the only one who hates this trope name? Look, I get that Badass Beard and/or Badass Mustache has problems per the TRS thread, but "Manly Facial Hair" just reeks of Department of Redundancy Department to me. Of course facial hair is going to be manly, because 99% of all examples of "badass facial hair" are going to be applied to men!
