What is this trope? Is this just about military settings (as about 3/4 of the description implies) or is it about a society in general (as per the other 1/4)? How overtly does this have to feature into the plot to make it a point? Is anything with a hereditary queen/empress who isn't constantly defending her position based on gender automatically an example (as per the description)?

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI removed the following comment (from the Real Life section explaining why men actually ARE the expendable gender):
- Though this theory does not explain why slightly more men are born than women rather than the other way around, nor does it explain why we evolved menopause (something unique to humans), both of which should make the supposed bottleneck much worse.
(1) Men die at a higher rate than women, to the point where, despite the skewed birth ratio, in many societies there are more women than men in their twenties. (2) Postmenopausal women wouldn't have that many children anyway, and losing them to Death by Childbirth is also bad because they can't be good grandparents.
