As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openImage Pickin' and TRS threads alert watchlist
To get a watchlist alert if an Image Pickin' or TRS thread is started for a page you're following.
openBlocking threads
This came up a while back, I think during a conversation on Yack Fest. It would be useful to have the ability to block threads that you don't want to see so they don't show up on the forums, kind of like the watchlist in reverse.
openVideos don't ping on Watchlist
I just realized that adding a video to a trope that's on your watchlist doesn't trigger any mention on said watchlist. It would be nice to be informed of such a thing for the pages you're following.
openChange to forum watchlist and noticeboards
Posted this in the moderator forum at first, but it may be useful here:
- First and foremost, have the red dot in the upper right corner not only display for PMs but also for forum watchlist updates. Both to enhance visibility and for another change below here.
- Allow people other than the troper itself to add someone as thread watcher. This may serve as a good replacement for the ~Tropers/ markup, which a) doesn't work on nonstandard troper names and b) only works on a per post basis and you need to use it repeatedly - both problems I've seen in the YKTTW Crash Rescue.
- Such auto-watchlisting could be triggered by a) being the thread creator and b) a troper's name being mentioned with a @ before, e.g @SeptimusHeap.
- To prevent spamming, showing on the thread if someone has watchlisted or unwatchlised a thread - including others. Likely as a pseudo-post which is much smaller and doesn't bump the thread or generate a notification.
- Maybe one could also create a function to automatically watchlist threads meeting some criteria - this way I could follow the workshop discussions much more easily instead of having to manually watchlist every thread. This is inspired by the "Herald" functionality of this forum like software. See also this◊ screenshot of that interface.
- Optionally, let people have email notifications for watchlist or PM updates - also discussed here. Should be a profile option.
This system may also be expanded to cover noticeboards such as Ask The Tropers.
openMake it easier to tell which newly-edited watchlist entries are unread
Right now, pages with unseen edits are shown as being slightly darker on the watchlist. This is pretty hard to notice, especially in night vision mode where the difference is pretty much invisible. There is a fading-in animation when the page loads, but once it's done, that doesn't help unless you refresh the page.
The previous TV Tropes layout had a big red dot next to unread changes, which was much clearer and impossible to miss.
EDIT: If you end up changing how unread edits are shown on the watchlist, could you also show how many times the page was edited since you last checked it?
Edited by ZuxtronopenAdd color to Watch button star
Right now, the only difference between the "Add to Watchlist" and "Remove from Watchlist" button on a trope/work page is whether the grey star is solid or outlined. I don't find this intuitive for distinguishing whether I've already added a page or not. Making the solid star blue or yellow would help, and changing "Watch" to say "Watching" or "Watched" for a page on the watchlist would be even better.
Edited by HeraldAlberichopenMake Discussion Page Updates Visible From The Watchlist
Can we *please* have discussion page updates visible from the Watchlist? I'd like to be able to use them, but as it is, right now, unless I specifically mention it in the Edit Summary, I might as well be shouting into the void.
openWatchlist "Clear" Button
I would like there a way to "clear" your watchlist. I realize that I've watched way too many pages and I rendered the page laggy and useless to use. I don't want to have to get rid of each item on the list by hand, that's incredibly annoying. At the very least, I would like to remove multiple pages much more quickly.
openTrigger forum watchlist when posts in watched threads are edited
Something that might be helpful for the Thread Watchlist is to have it not only trigger when a new post is made in a thread but when a post is edited. Ideally this would point to the edit in question.
openCheckbox deletion on wiki and forum watchlists
As is the case with our PM boxes, right now items on the watchlists have to be individually dropped. If possible, it'd be handy to have the watchlists set up with checkboxes that you can click in and then have a "Delete selected" command.
openEdit Reason Types
This will probably take a lot of work to implement, but just a suggestion...
I'd like it if, while editing a page, the "Edit Reason" thing was a drop down list instead of just a text box. Options on the list would include things like "Added new examples or other content", "Grammar/spelling fixes", "Formatting fixes", etc. Then the text box could just be used to provide a little more info if necessary.
Then, on your watchlist, you could set it so that you don't get notified of certain types of edits. Just a thought.
openWatchlist for tlp
I would like TLP to have a watchlist like YKTTW did, so we can watch and follow drafts
openRemove target=blank from watchlist links in Desktop view
It is poor practice nowadays, at least on desktops, to override the user's choice of where to open a link. When I want to open a watchlist link in a new tab, I middle-click it. When I left-click it, I expect to see it open in the same tab.
This worked fine in previous versions of the website, this is a regression.
I am, however, conscious that mobile users have different use cases (that stem from an inability to middle-click), so mobile view should stay as it is.
openMark new Image Pickin' links as a discussion page update
I can't see anything suggesting this is a bug, so I'm assuming it would be a new feature -
When new Image Pickin' threads for a Main or Works page create a link on its Discussion page, that doesn't show up in the watchlist as a discussion page update, so doesn't alert any tropers who may be active on and/or interested in the page.
It would be great if it did, though - presumably in the same way that a cutlist request immediately shows up as a change on the relevant page.
Edited by Mrph1openAutomatically follow a discussion page when following a page
It would be handy and help promote the use of discussion pages if following a wiki page automatically added its discussion page to your watchlist, since otherwise you'd have to remember to follow the discussion page separately to be notified of new discussion on your watchlist.
You could still choose whether to follow just the wiki page or just the discussion page, same as under the current system, it's just that the discussion page would be an "opt out" option when following the wiki page, rather than an "opt in" option.
openFor mobile, ask for confirmation before dropping something from Watchlist
I accidentally dropped something because of a forced realignment, so I thought it'd be nice if the site asked if you really want to do so before going through with it.
openAutomatically add YKTTW, You Know That Show, and Trope Finder to Watchlist
Several times, I have come onto the site, asked a question on the "Remember / You Know That Show" page, and forgotten to check back for an answer. By the time I remember it has been scrolled off the page and into oblivion. It would be helpful to auto-add entries like this (and YKTTW and Trope Finder) to the OP's Watchlist.
I would like a single notification page that lists all new PMs, updates in your watchlist, forum thread replies, starred YKTTW updates, and new replies for starred ATT/YKTS/etc. topics.
