JoJo is weird in that the Japanese names are used over the English ones (i.e. Killer Queen over Deadly Queen, Aerosmith over Lil Bomber) in a lot of instances, mostly Stand names. I greatly prefer the Japanese ones (and I'm sure a lot of others on this site do too), but whether or not Jojo should be excluded from localized names is kind of a can of worms.

Our policy is to always use the most recent English names.

I recommend that we use the most recent English names, though in my case that's partly because I'm only familiar with the manga, which uses those names.

^^I'm aware, it's just that this has been going on for years and no one seems to be bothered by it.

Kars, Wamuu, and Esidisi are written like that even in the original Japanese materials, so "correcting" the spelling to the band names is wrong on that front, too. I also had such edits reverted on ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice.Anime And Manga over character translations, despite my edit going by community consensus.

The original Japanese names, in my opinion, are what I believe we should be using, since the community overall uses those names. Some names from Part 3 that particularly bother me:

  • Oingo and Boingo are called Zenyatta and Mondatta in the 2005 English manga release, as well as the 2015 anime subtitles on Crunchyroll and English dub by Viz Media. However, the current English manga releases go back to Oingo and Boingo, and in all versions, the names Oingo and Boingo can be seen and heard on-screen.
  • Nukesaku is written Nukesaku in Crunchyroll's subtitles, but Loser in the English manga and anime dub.
  • Senator Wilson Phillips: Wilson Phillips is reduced to Senator Phillips in the Crunchyroll subs, but the first name is restored in the dub.
  • Vanilla Ice, oh boy. Since the manga, 1993 OVA series, and 2015 TV anime all share a single set of pages, we would have to go by Cool Ice, since the manga, anime, and current video games use that... but wait! The OVA series uses Iced, so discussions of the OVA interspersed with the others must read as Iced. Therefore, the guy's character sheet will have to flip-flop between "Iced" and "Cool Ice" for the different versions.
  • Giorno Giovanna's Stand is renamed from Gold Experience to Golden Wind in the video games and anime subtitles and dub; likewise, Jolyne Cujoh's Stone Free is renamed to Stone Ocean in the video games.

I find it clear that the translators would rather keep the names intact, but legally are told not to (I do think some of these are stretching, though). As such, it makes more sense to bend the rules in this case and use the uncensored names on the wiki. I don't think it would set any more of a bad precedent than allowing Stop Hitting Yourself and Two Words: I Can't Count to be launched with those names with moderator approval despite the No New Stock Phrases rule.

Technically, the rule is to stick to the latest translation, so out of all of these, we'd have to use the most current one (which I believe is the dubbed version). But I really feel like the rule should be relaxed when it comes to JoJo's, since pretty much no one in the fandom actually uses these names.

The point of this was less to draw attention to the use of the original names on the page, and more to alert the mods to an edit war.

I agree that we should use the Japanese names for JoJo, since that's what the fans use and the name changes are the result of Writing Around Trademarks. We should obviously still note the localized names in the character folder.

I mean, just because the fans are often wrong doesn't mean we should break our own rules to appease them.

IIRC, ACDC doesn't even make sense because while the Japanese name is supposed to reflect ACDC, it's still different. It's like changing Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z to "Vegetable" because of the theme naming. The writer made a choice to make the name different from the inspiration.

But there seems to be two discussions at play here:

  • One for renaming characters to fit their musical inspirations, even though that's not their name in the English or the Japanese, which is what OP made the thread about. It's also something that Seguir has edit warred over in the past.
  • Another is the Dub Name Change examples, which is a separate issue. This is what the majority of the discussion is about.

We should use Kars, Wamuu, and Esidisi since those are the romanizations used in the artbooks. I don't see how using the uncensored names is "wrong", and this is a wiki run by consensus, so rules are flexible. Maybe we should start a thread about this or bring it to the English localization cleanup thread, possibly with a crowner to decide?

Wait a minute. Larkmarn, I don't get your post. Did you mean to say that "just because the fans are often RIGHT doesn't mean we should break our own rules to appease them"?

No, I'm referring to the actual thrust of the OP's statement where the fans are unequivocally wrong. Apologies for the confusion, I had further modified my post to cover multiple topics (OP's point, plus the later point about fanslations) so it was clearer when I initially made my comment.
