Idk while Saturn is competent, I definitely think you’re supposed to hate him considering the way he’s written. I feel like One Piece villains are usually written is such a way where, even if you’re not meant to sympathize with them, the story at least gives them some semi-relatable qualities which allows you to kinda get where they’re coming from. Like, with Big Mom you can definitely understand why she turned out that way based on her upbringing which I think gives her character at least some level of tragedy. Or with Kaido, I think most people can relate to the desire to have some kind of challenge in their lives. Or even with Doflamingo, you can at least sort of understand why he’s such a hate-filled asshole. Even if a character is a horrible person, giving them some semi-relatable qualities or some kind of core drive TYPICALLY makes them avoid Hate Sink territory. But with Saturn, there’s just nothing you can latch onto with him. He’s like a brick wall of pettiness that has no reason (or at least none that the audience is made privy to) for doing what he does. He has no real drive or ambition beyond maintaining the status quo. He comes off as kinda inhuman, and I think that’s intentional. He definitely strikes me as a character you’re MEANT to hate. It’s a subtle difference, but I definitely think that’s what makes him go into Hate Sink territory.
