I actually think Seed is a good place to start. As mentioned it's pretty standard/easy to get into, and it's less "dated" graphically than some of the older series, making it a good "beginner's fare".
"No, the Singularity will not happen. Computation is hard." -Happy EntI've only seen Gundam 00 and I have a favorable opinion of it. I"m not really sure if I'd like any of the other Gundam shows, since I understand that Gundam 00 is a deconstruction of things played straight in the earlier installments.
The thread title made me laugh. If you had a drinking game where you took a shot every time someone said "It's a Gundam!" in Gundam 00, you'd be unconscious by the end of the first episode.
HodorOr if you did so every time you heard someone say, "FALL!" in Zeta.
A True Lady's Quest - A Jojo is You!It may be a Gundam, but is it a CHAR?
Or every time someone started spontaneously punching someone else in Zeta...
That's one of the things I really liked that they picked up from Wing. On that note.
Hmm, so apparently every series is like that.
Hodor^^ Or at least enough are for it to be the page quote for the franchise
EDIT: "^^" added due to ninjas. I'm getting ninja'd everywhere today!

I just watched episode 6 of The08th MS Team and I'm starting to see why people love this series so much.
I guess it is.Some of the gundam series are getting released for free at Crunchy Roll in case anyone wants to watch the earleir stuff.
Bleye knows Sabers.Anime News Network is getting some as well, and not the same ones as Crunchyroll.
I guess it is.I think 00 was up on Youtube. Incedentally, it's Wing that started the "It's a Gundam!" thing as far as I know. The08th MS Team is the only one before that that had multiple gundams.
Fight smart, not fair.Whoa, what? There're at least two gundams in Zeta! And a ton in G Gundam.

A True Lady's Quest - A Jojo is You!There were at least 3 Gundams in Zeta. Likely more in ZZ.
Edit: Wait, make that 5. I forgot about Psycho Gundam and Psycho Gundam MK II.
Edit again: ZZ seems to have had at least 4.
Alsö alsö edit: 0083 had 3.

Schedule for the Gundam streaming binge that Bandai is happily going on.
First seven minutes of Unicorn
@Deboss: Wing actually came out a year before 08th MS Team.
@Miijhal: Zeta had 4 Gundams actually: Mk. II/Super(Same unit, really), Zeta, and the two Psyco Gundams. ZZ also had 4: Mk.II, Zeta, ZZ and its variants, and Psyco Mk.II. (Some people also count the Hyaku Shiki as a Gundam, although I prefer not to.) Also, I have heard that the Zeong from the original series was originally supposed to be called the Zeon Gundam, so take that how you will. Although honestly, the only thing in UC that tells you if something is a Gundam is if it's called a Gundam.

^ That's because in UC, a Gundam was just a high performance mobile suit. Once you get out of UC, a Gundam (usually) means a Super Robot plopped in a cast of reals.
Fear the Gothilolions! | Anime list@Balesirion: However, there were 2 Gundam MK I Is, if I recall correctly.
@zzz: Really, by the end of UC they had crossed the line into Super Robots. Even by Zeta they had Empathic Transforming Mecha.

^ 3 Mk IIs, and I suppose its not so much the super robot-ness, but more the 'only Gundams can defeat gundams' trend that seemed to start with Wing.
But that's really just a pet peeve of mine, pay it no serious mind.

Fear the Gothilolions! | Anime listThat's pretty much what turned me off Turn A Gundam. There are super robots that couldn't even come close to the things Turn A and Turn X could do.
Don't know if this is a possible derailment, but take a look and tell me what you think.
That looked awesome to me.
Fight smart, not fair.Feltd has had a haircut but to make up for it Hallelujah and Sohma/Marie... have not.
Still not entirely convinced about the new Gundam designs.
Nena Trinity survived?! How the hell did that happen?
Also what's with Tieria. The first trailer implied that he'd been playing more of a Ghost in the Machine roll from inside Veda but now he appears to have a new body. And is it just him in there or is Regene along for the ride?
Welcome to the Sea of Chaos@Knightof L-sama: Who said that was actually Nena Trinity? The Trinities were test-tube babies/Innovades capable of interfacing with Veda, there's no reason why there couldn't be another genetically identical to Nena. Plus, out-of-universe, Nena's very popular in Japan, so I'm sure they wanted to find a way to incorporate her somehow.
@zzzdragon & Miijhal: That's not really correct. If you look at the actual series, Turn A very rarely displayed a massive level of power. And honestly, the "Only a Gundam can defeat a Gundam" thing only really appears in Wing anyway. The Gundams barely survive at many points in 00, Turn A regularly had trouble, and SEED/Destiny had many Gundams that were pretty much useless the entire time. (Blitz or Saviour anyone?)
Another possiblity of the "Voice actor controversy" for Zeta might be that some people (most notably Four Murasame) got replaced in the compiliation movie. Apparently, Four's new VA was friends with someone involved with the film's production, so there was a bit of outcry having to do with "favors" and that sort of thing.
