...and terrible for reason 2.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.hah, that look on Cap'Am's face is just plain funny. There's gotta be somethin better.
How about an Animal Man example:
- Animal Man meets his writer, Grant Morrison◊
- Cover image of same
- Grant Morrison and Animal Man ''discussing'' Writer On Board issues◊
I think the latter is best. I'm thinking panels 2 and 3 arranged vertically?
Jet-a-Reeno!Panels 2 and 3 of the last one are great. In fact, just panel 2 alone would work.
It does not matter who I am. What matters is, who will you become? - motto of Omsk BirdHow's this?
Caption maybe "Animal Man discusses this trope with his writer, Grant Morrison."
Jet-a-Reeno!Looks perfect to me.
I like it.
The image is perfect and the caption is fine as well.
Too big.
Besides, it's not really a picture of the trope but two people talking about it. What we need is a picture that epitomizes this in distilled form.

Mathematics Is A Language.How about◊?
Mathematics Is A Language. It's a Chick Tract panel calling people (probably those who subscribe to the theory of evolution) Nazis.
Personally, I'd much prefer the Animal Man panels, on account of being nicely self-ironic and not leaving a bad taste in my mouth.
It does not matter who I am. What matters is, who will you become? - motto of Omsk BirdI don't think the Chick Tract example really works. For one thing, Chick Tracts are just that - tracts. It's like saying, oh, the shows hosted by Rush Limbaugh or Rachel Maddow suffer from "obvious authorial intrusion." That's the whole point of the exercise.
Jet-a-Reeno!I'd say just the top panel of Animal Man.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.I like the Animal Man one.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickWhy just the first panel, though? It seems to me the second one (with Grant Morrison criticizing his own "soapboxing") is the one that really sells it.
Jet-a-Reeno!The Animal man isn't really clear to people who don't know the work.
I don't know the work (well, I've heard the title, but that's it), and I think the panels are completely self-explanatory.
It does not matter who I am. What matters is, who will you become? - motto of Omsk Bird^^^ Because it's the first panel that explains it. The second panel judges it and declares "...and that's terrible!" The trope is about doing it, not whether it's good or bad.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.You have a point. I think the first panel alone works. The full thing tells more of a story, but we're about giving examples, not telling stories for page images.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickOK, I went ahead and added the image.
