Someone on the DMC forums has a theory on how Lucia could be in DMC5.

As long as she's not making a cameo just to be killed off or something. I'd actually prefer her being a no-show to that.

Understandable. I don't think it would take much to rescue Lucia from the scrappy heap (assuming that hasn't already happened). I've said before that if this does end up being the last hurrah for Dante and Vergil, I wouldn't mind the series focusing on other individuals and organizations that handle demons. Lucia's clan are such characters. I'd even like to see a revived non-corrupt version of the Order of the Sword.

Lucia's like the one thing people like about DMC2!

Frankly at this point Beryl would be more of a curveball appearance since she's Proto-Lady

Lucia is listed as a replacement scrappy both on DMC's YMMV page and the Replacement Scrappy page. She did get some criticism early on but it seems to have died down some.

It might have been because DMC2 was the first sequel in the series, while since people have long gotten used to the repertoire of lady (lower-case) sidekicks. It probably also helps that now that Lucia was a different character entirely, while people say for sure that DMC2 Dante was a different character entirely while not being explicitly so.

I seriously doubt Lucia can still be considered a Replacement Scrappy for Trish now that we've got Trish appearing fairly regularly and Lucia's nowhere to be seen for fifteen years.

What about Majin Form? I doubt people will forget it from DMC2... Is there a chance that it will appear again in 5?

Dante's Devil Trigger look in 5 seems to have gotten some design influences from it. My thinking is that it'll come back to annihilate the final boss. By 2 Dante was literally at the top of the food chain, and his time in hell weakened him. But this time he'll find something that will challenge it.

Aspects of it (Such as Dante being able to glide) are already present in his Default Devil Trigger form in 5 now.

Do we know how much time has passed in-universe? And are they gonna tell us? 'Cause I have this image in my head of a cutscene where Dante and Nero are shit-talking, and Nero goes a little quiet and says something like"good to see you again, old man", and Dante says "you too, kid" and then Nero snorts and says "you do realize I'm older than you were when we first met, right?". And Dante being Dante skips right over freaking out about how long he was actually in hell, and grumbles about 'getting old' .

The only thing that's been confirmed from one of the producers is that DMC5 takes place several years after DMC4, and subsequently DMC2, but a couple years after DMC4 for easier story telling. DMC has never been one for exact number of years between each titles. Gives the development team and anyone else wriggle room to play with details instead of being locked in.

So, um, I stumbled across this complaint about Trish's Gloria alternate skin being blackface.

This is honestly the first time I've seen anyone complain about this and I'm not sure how to feel about this myself. On the one hand, she is supposed to just have a tan. On the other, it's hard not to see how close to black Gloria looks.

And this wouldn't be the first time Capcom got accused of racial tone deafness.

Thoughts?

I'm ignoring that crap altogether. Those are the exact people that complain for the sake of complaining.

Tumblr almost always sees racism everywhere and feels the need to complain and signal about it.

I don't think The Mary Sue complained about this either. That's how you know it's not offensive.

Not even a quick Google search seems to find that many people complaining about Trish's "blackface" costume.

Anyway, the whole Trish/Gloria thing has always elicited a pretty big side eye. I feel like most people would prefer forgetting that it happened.

Isn't trish a demon anyway? Her assuming various human forms seems totally believable and not out of the question. I would not call that blackface lol.

Gloria would've been better off as her own character yeah but they hardly did anything with her anyway.

I think most people tried to give the thing a pass because it was Devil May Cry. And it wasn't as bad as other examples of the thing.

Gloria feels to me like something they had far bigger plans for but had to cut entirely.

I mean, why the fuck else would they bother to make a highly distinct (seriously Gloria's design is loud as hell) character out of another character that already exists to make them majorly appear in, if I recall correctly, one cutscene and then sorta just be there in two others.

I don't see Gloria as having anything remotely resembling unfortunate implications. Blackface is seen as racist for having commonly portrayed and contributed to racist stereotypes. Gloria is just a dark-skinned kick-happy Lady Gaga - I don't claim to know much, but I did not see anything relating African or African-American culture/stereotypes in the slightest in Gloria. She's just a really weirdly-dressed woman that I'm sure I'd think no different of with any other racial phenotype on her other than "Her skin colour is X".

The only thing I can find remotely racist in Gloria's existence is that she's the only one of two dark-skinned characters in the game series (until 5) but she doesn't really exist. That can be seen as a tad marginalizing - but that would have nothing to do with blackface.

To be fair, there are also plenty of white characters in DMC who barely exist (see Kyrie).
