^Oh yeah, totally forgot about The Black Cauldron! Why is that Disneys least successful film, I really enjoyed it!

Also Underrated: The Great Mouse Detective. I'm still waiting for it to come out on Blu-Ray.

My gripe with No Country For Old Men wasn't that it killed the main character off-screen, but with the fact that during the last twenty minutes, I found myself thinking "what happened to the plot?" Then the movie ends, and I think "oh, that's what happened. They ran out of it."

Anyway...

Underrated: Paulie (used to love this movie. Mom likes it a lot, too), Chicago (people bash it a lot for winning the Oscar, but it was a really good movie),

Overrated: No Country For Old Men (reasons I outlined above), Kick-Ass (was okay, wasn't as awesome as it was trying to be. My suspension of disbelief folded at the "purchasing a jetpack with gatling guns off of eBay")

Fanfiction I hate.

I was under the impression that people hated the scary movie franchise. It only looks good compared to the other (genre) movie franchises.

^^ Merf, it may be a result of location, then, because a ton of my friends as well as other people in my area think it's hilarious.

Overrated: Pulp Fiction, Zodiac (2007), WALL-E, Up, Toy Story, Office Space.

Underrated: Jackie Brown, Scream 3. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is also pretty underrated. While gathering critical acclaim, it's bombing at the box office because it can't find much of an audience.

I find it pretty funny how everyone thinks Avatar is overrated. If nobody actually likes it, is it still overrated? I'm not defending it or anything. The plot sucks and it's Ferngully levels of Anvilicious, but it's not like it's actually praised for its plot or characters or whatever. It's a blockbuster, and it's not a bad one at that.

I agree with Pixar being overrated. Technically they are absolutely superior, and everything is good, but for me it just never rises above "good". For some reason I seem to enjoy the first halves of all the Pixar films a lot more than the second halves.

I'll also agree with the Dark Knight, and would like to nominate Inception. I still stand by my theory that the ambigiuous ending is completely half-assed.

Overrated: Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. The first one actually was a pretty good movie, and I did enjoy it on an emotional level. But really, why the f&#k did it deserve so many Oscars including Best Sound Mixing instead of something like WALL-E who's first 30 minutes is nothing but? And I'm not even going to discuss Benjamin Button.

This is an understandable view if you've only discussed it here, on similar places online, or with like-minded friends. However, at least half the people I've talked to about it IRL liked it, and a few loved loved it, some of which seem to have otherwise better taste. But hey, maybe its a regional thing, I don't know.

Overrated: Avatar really is just a bunch of scenery.

Saving Private Ryan was groundbreaking, but after watching Band of Brothers, SPR seems more gimmicky and cliche with a whatever plot. Plus the final battle has some historical inaccuracies that make it unwatchable.

The Hangover really wasn't that funny.

Underrated: A WHOLE lot of foreign films: Tropa de Elite, Cinema Paradiso, The Lives of Others.

Three Burials for Melquiades Estrada, probably suffered due to limited distribution and the Word Salad Title; too bad, because it's an incredible film.

Escape from New York has not been watched enough. I should be able to reference that in a convo without having to explain anything.

Big Country is one of the finest westerns ever made.

Overrated: TITANIC is THE biggest offender of this. Oh, and I would gladly add Gladiator, Forrest Gump, and The English Patient. Although all have their own merits (save for Titanic and The English Patient), they're lauded SO MUCH that it gets on my nerves...

Underrated: Brick, Jackie Brown, Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, Bon Cop, Bad Cop, Freaks, and most notably Cronos. It's the directorial debut of Guillermo del Toro, and not a lot of people have even heard of it. Well, they should. Who doesn't want to watch a movie about an evil gold bug that stabs peoples' hands and turns them into vampires? Still waiting on that over-delayed Criterion Collection release of this one...
