Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

17 currently, plus the Crow trio, plus Ravok's 3 or 4 (depending if Joker and Luthor are separate or combined). So a total of 23 or 24.

Sure to Pelley.

Same here. For the record, the Myth page has 24, and I think the Music page had fewer when it started.

Anyone else have any opinion? Everyone fine using Scripts as the page title? Any good quotes?

Just throwing this out here, but maybe something from Crow 2037 would make a good quote for the scripts page. Like this one:

"I need nothing from you but your barely-beating heart to lure that snivelling (sic) wretch right where I want him. When you die, you will die knowing that I have tortured your little friend with horrors beyond horrors. If you could only see the morbid vividness of mutilation and degradation that this half-human parasite will soon endure... only then would you truly understand how easy you have it."

I would prefer that Unproduced Scripts be kept as a redirect, if nothing else.

Edit: Ultimately, I concur with Lighty below that it is too early for a scripts page.

[tup] to Maximilian Robespierre, William Dudley Pelley, and the Damien Finch quote.

[tdown] to Sergey Taboritsky.

Here's another candidate, another one that I may have missed.

What's the Work?

Poe's Daughter's Mortal Kombat series is a fanfic series on the aforementioned video game series, focusing on Sub-Zero. For this candidate specifically, I'll be focusing on Sub Zero: Origins, Frostbitten, and The Curse of the Dragon Medallion, which center around the events of Mortal Kombat 1 through Deception.

Who is Quan Chi and What Has He Done?

Quan Chi is a necromancer from the Netherrealm who allied with the Fallen Elder God Shinnok to overthrow the realm's ruler, Lucifer, in exchange for immense power and to rule by his side. Their millenium-long war was successful, but Shinnok soon desired to conquer Earthrealm instead, but he lost his amulet, which enabled him to traverse through the realms in the first place. Therefore, he tasked Quan Chi to do so, since he still could travel to Earthrealm, in which Quan Chi hired Bi-Han and Hanzo Hasashi from the Lin Kuei and Shirai Ryu clans respectively to retrieve it, wanting to ensure that the plan went successfully by sending two people after it. In exchange, Quan Chi promised to exterminate their respective rival clan, in which Bi-Han was victorious over Hanzo and killed him. As a result, Quan Chi and his forces exterminated Hanzo's clan, even personally killing his wife and son.

When Quan Chi gets the amulet from Bi-Han, he sends his assassins, Sareena, Kia, and Jataaka, to kill him when Bi-Han recognizes what he's done and tries to stop him. Quan Chi eventually engages and tries to kill Bi-Han, though Sareena (who was shown compassion by Bi-Han) attacks Quan Chi from behind, giving Bi-Han the time needed to escape. When Quan Chi killed Sareena, he banished her soul to the fifth plane of the Netherrealm to be tortured by the denizens there. He then framed Bi-Han for the crime to draw Hanzo's, now revived into his servant and called Scorpion, anger towards him and kill him. When Scorpion does so, Quan Chi steals Bi-Han's soul to make him his servant as well, Noob Saibot. Still, he loses Shinnok's amulet and thus Shinnok can't escape from the Netherrealm.

Despite this, Quan Chi still stirs up trouble throughout the realms. For instance, he "aids" Shao Kahn in taking control over the city of Bandiagara by giving the people the means to summon Malphas, fully knowing that he would drive the populace mad, but he didn't care because he was only interested in taking their souls to amplify his own power. This goes successfully, though since Malphas corrupted many of the resources in the city, it strained their relationship permanently, though Shao Kahn would still employ him from time to time if it suited him. It's also implied that he manipulated some of the Lin Kuei's actions, specifically to launch a raid against the village Frost resided in. Regardless, the raid ends up killing Frost's mother and siblings, where Quan Chi, under the guise of a man named Kiyoto, reveals that she is actually the daughter of the leader of the raid, An Zhi, and that she should blame her adoptive father, Shinji, for allowing the rest of her adoptive family to die. As a result, Frost completely exterminates her village and murders Shinji, a fact that Quan Chi takes pride in and planned to turn Frost evil to make her his servant one day.

He's later seen acting as an advisor to Shao Kahn, in which he hopes to eventually assassinate Shao Kahn. After Shao Kahn's defeat in the tournament in Outworld, Quan Chi heals his injuries and gives him the idea of invading Earthrealm, hoping that this would remove Shao Kahn as an obstacle to his own goals. To that end, he revives Sindel in Earthrealm, which gives Shao Kahn a reason to enter Earthrealm and thus give a justification to invade it. Quan Chi himself directly participates in the invasion by conjuring up a soulnado to strengthen Shao Kahn's power, in which he sacrifices over a hundred humans to initiate the spell. Upon meeting Sub-Zero and Scorpion, he reveals the ploy he set up with Bi-Han and Hanzo's death and taunts them about it before a fight ensues. Noob Saibot even helps them fight off Quan Chi, in which he is sent to the Soulnado and seemingly killed.

In reality, Quan Chi survived, though he was pursued relentlessly by vengeful Scorpion. However, he since escaped and, with the aid of Shang Tsung and Rain, assassinated Shao Kahn. He even helps Shang Tsung kill Liu Kang to remove him as a potential threat to their plans. However, he had bigger ambitions than that: he discovered that Outworld's previous ruler, Onaga, had an unstoppable army and Quan Chi has since found their tomb. He hopes that he could use a starting spell to revive some of the army and then steal more souls to revive the rest, in which he plans to start by exterminating all of Earthrealm's warriors and its populace to achieve said goal. Along with his Netherrealm forces, he allies with the cyberized Lin Kuei under the control of Sektor, who usurped control of the clan from Oniro. He also even recruits Frost, manipulating her hatred for An Zhi and transferring said anger to Sub-Zero. He sets her up as a mole in Sub-Zero's reformed Lin Kuei clan, where he expects her to sabotage his efforts or even assassinate him when she has the chance.

First though, he takes his lieutenants to the prison of Judecca in the Netherrealm, where he has kept countless beings to be tortured by the intense cold there. For over a year, he's tormented Noob Saibot this way, but he's come to retrieve him and have him work with Frost, binding his soul to Smoke (his servant at the time) to ensure that he doesn't plan to rebel against him. He tasks them to murder most of Sub-Zero and his allies' families and kidnap some members as hostages to lure them into a trap. The plan goes successfully and, now, Quan Chi only needs to focus on finding the tomb of the Dragon King's army. One of his hostages, Anya, is Sub-Zero's wife, in which Quan Chi gives her to Rain so that he could marry her, which includes beating and raping her. To ensure that she doesn't try to escape, Quan Chi wipes all of her memories, specifically ones with Sub-Zero.

Eventually, Anya tries to escape Quan Chi's clutches, though she's quickly captured and brought back. As punishment, he begins torturing her through a process called strappado, where he physically renders her body, in which the pain is described to be as bad as crucifixion. Once said session is done, Quan Chi warns her that there will be more "dire consequences" if she tries to escape again. Later on, Quan Chi captures Sub-Zero and Kabal, where he allows Frost and several of his other lieutenants to torture them.

After much effort, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung discover Onaga's army, where he sacrifices four of his prisoners, including Anya, to unleash a soulnado and revive portions of the army. While Sub-Zero reaches Anya, he is unable to stop the process, which is tormenting Anya. However, Frost's ambitions get the better of her and she tries to steal the Dragon Medallion (an artifact that would supposedly increase her power), though its power is too powerful and painful for her to manage. More importantly, it does manage to prevent Quan Chi's spell from reaching its full potential and, while he did revive some legions, a large portion of the army is still decommissioned. Angered, Quan Chi orders Noob Saibot to place a spell on her that would take away her powers as punishment.

Upon reviving a couple of legions of Onaga's army, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung move onto engage Raiden's forces, in which a massive battle ensues. Quan Chi gloats about his plan to exterminate every human in Earthrealm and infuse their souls into his army, in which he states that Raiden and his friends will be the first to suffer this fate. Both sorcerors fight Raiden and beat him, but they turn on each other to gain fully control of their forces. Unfortunately for them and the rest of the realms, Onaga has been revived by using Reptile as his host body and come to kill the sorcerors to regain control of his army. Both of them and Raiden join forces to try to stop Onaga, but their efforts are in vain and even Raiden's attempt to create a massive explosion fails, which kills all three of them.

Despite this, he is revived by Onaga as his mindless servant, though he is killed by Scorpion and Noob Saibot in the final battle.

Does He Have Any Mitigating Qualities or Freudian Excuse?

Zilch. He's ultimately loyal to no one, backstabbing both Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung, while trying to eclipse Shinnok in power by gaining control of Onaga's army. Him joining forces with Raiden and Shang Tsung against Onaga isn't a Heel–Face Turn either, as he's merely working with them out of self-preservation. He even keeps his arrogant and hostile tone to Raiden during their fight. No Freudian Excuse to speak of either.

Does He Meet the Heinousness Standard?

This series has a much higher standard than the canon series, with various antagonists committing genocides on both a small- and large-scale. All that said, I still think Quan Chi manages to stand out because of the amount of torture he places on others, from torturing Sareena's soul on the fifth plane of the Netherrealm to physically rending Anya's body. Out of all the characters in this series, he probably commits the most visceral and large-scale torture in the series, both personally and within the Netherrealm. Not to mention his plan to eradicate all of humanity in Earthrealm to build his growing army, which is punching above his resource class and reaching the levels of genocide committed by Shao Kahn and Onaga. Also, in case you're curious, Shang Tsung doesn't count because he does less than Quan Chi and the worst thing that he does is take the form of the family members of Earthrealm's warriors and taunt them about their deaths, which doesn't come remotely close to passing the heinousness standard.

Final Verdict

By the way, we need to update the links to "How I Escaped from a Cult" and Joe Montana Saves the Princess. Also, I think we should find some way to preserve the former in case this link goes down too (already archived the latter, not sure if the former can be archived by conventional archiving sites).

Here's the other candidate I had in mind.

What's the Work?

Mortal Kombat: Vengenace, Devestation, and Destruction is a Mortal Kombat fanfic trilogy that focuses on the first game and X. For this candidate, I'll be referring to the latter two stories, in which Earthrealm's warriors need to unite and work together to combat a threat to Earthrealm.

Who is Shinnok and What Has He Done?

One thousand years ago, Shinnok launched an invasion of Earthrealm to rule over it with an iron fist, which inevitably brought him into conflict with its protectors, Raiden and Fujin. Specifically, Shinnok hoped to corrupt the realm's life force, the Jinsei, to turn it into a wasteland, in which he could then shape it into his own image. Despite initially having the upper hand, the two gods are able to defeat him and trap him within his own amulet.

Unfortunately, his servant, Quan Chi, was able to steal back the amulet and free Shinnok in the present day. He first captures Raiden and then gloats that he'll watch him corrupt Earthrealm before he'll torture and slowly kill him. Once finished with Earthrealm, he'll then move onto Outworld and the other realms before he destroys the Elder Gods themselves, allowing him to reign supreme. Even better for Shinnok, Quan Chi reveals that he developed a mind control spell, which he uses on Sonya Blade, Reptile, and Erron Black.

When Cassie Cage, Jacqui Briggs, Johnny Cage, and a freed Sonya Blade arrive to the Jinsei chamber to stop Shinnok, they find him torturing Raiden with his amulet before a fight ensues. Ultimately, Shinnok is defeated, but he tries to deny them victory by corrupting the Jinsei in a spiteful attempt to wipe out all life in Earthrealm. Raiden sacrifices himself to purify the Jinsei, but Shinnok also prepared just for this occasion. By purifying it, he absorbed its corruption and thus became Dark Raiden, a more authoritarian version of himself who becomes hostile to any potential threats to Earthrealm. He also ensured that some influence from his mind control spell remained in Sonya, which drives her to kill Kenshi and nearly kill Cassie Cage later on.

Does He Have Any Mitigating Qualities or Freudian Excuse?

None whatsoever. His relationship with Quan Chi doesn't go beyond anything professional and he doesn't have any excuse to even remotely justify his actions.

Does He Meet the Heinousness Standard?

He tortures Raiden and plots to wipe out all life in Earthrealm to shape it to his own liking, even attempting to do the same to spite the heroes one last time. The other primary antagonists like Shao Kahn or Shang Tsung don't reach the same attempted body count or depravity of Shinnok, so he easily passes the standard for this story.

Final Verdict

A simple [tup].
