Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Quick question, was Mrs. Carmody from the Mist ever discussed. If she was but was downvoted I won't mind, but CM or not, I will always believe that she was a VERY monsterous character.

She's not. Carmody is pretty lightweight for a Stephen King story, even a novella.

Well, it looks like we're going with separate entries for Mistleteinn and Ijima. It's fine though, since that separate entry that Elfen made is pretty solid, and between the two entire, we have all the most important information on display. Honestly, this is why I was favoring for separate entries in the first place; I figured someone might have a problem with the length.

While I'm at it though, it's funny that you just asked about Mistleteinn's entry ACW, because I just recently noticed a couple of mistakes in her existing entry. In the last line, it says "Treesea imprisons Merry in to drown her in her own sorrow", accidentally leaving out what she's imprisoned in. It should say "a bud of despair" there... right Elfen? Also, on a more minor note, there's this part; "Joining forces with Ryota Ijima, the duo plan to ruin the dreams of others, Treesea happily implanting Dream Demons on innocent students, resulting in them becoming utterly emotionless and apathetic towards the future of their own lives". While that mostly works fine, it should add that she kills them later, since that's what causes the students to end up in that nearly lifeless state, not just the implanting part.

Other than that, since we're going with the separate entries approach, how do people feel about my previous suggestion regarding prefacing their entries with a line that goes something like "the anime version features this despicable duo"? Apart from being appropriate, it would remove the need to point out that they're anime-original characters in the entries themselves.

Ok, so she's not an COMPLETE monster, but I'm not gonna lie, I still found her to be a monster, especially when she tried to sacrifice David's 8 eight year old: Billy. Killing innocent children will ALWAYS be considered an Mortal Event Horizon to me.

Yes, happy 6000 everyone! I'm honored I could contribute to this latest milestone with my recent posts and all. In the meantime, since I'm still sans editing privileges, I thought I'd try proposing how the the Dream Eater Merry entries could look with my suggested edits and introductory line, and see what people think:

"Dream Eater Merry: The anime adaptation features this despicable duo:

  • Mystleteinn/Mistleteinn/Mistilteinn Treesea is a vicious Dream Demon who tortures and eats others of her kind. Joining forces with Ryota Ijima, the duo plan to ruin the dreams of others, Treesea happily implanting Dream Demons on innocent students, then returning to slaughter them, resulting in them becoming utterly emotionless and apathetic towards the future of their own lives. Confronted by Merry in Isana's dream, Treesea taunts her and tries to kill her own Dream Demon she attached to Isana to harvest her. In her final confrontation with the heroes, Treesea imprisons Merry in a bud of despair to drown her in her own sorrow and mocks the Heroic Sacrifice performed by two heroes as "fruitless".

  • The aforementioned Ryota Ijima is a charismatic teacher and guidance-counselor at Yumeji's Highschool. However, he reveals himself to be something sinister. In the last stretch of episodes, he was revealed to conspire with the evil Dream Demon, Mistleteinn Treesea, to ruin the dreams of his students by killing the dream demons, taking a sadistic relish from all of it. He then reveals his true nature towards one of his students by repeatedly kicking her head and during the final confrontation, he then spitefully beats Yumeji after the other two heroes failed to kill Mistleteinn."

So? Does everyone like it?

Insofar as I know, Carmody doesn't count in the novella because of the shared standard. The movie is a different deal; I vouch she passes heinousness there, but the time she was effortposted it was kind of brought up she might... not really be right in the head.

Lightysnake Since: May, 2010

Does she? I mean, my memory is a little foggy of The Mist in totality, but...the only standout I recall is the attempted sacrifice.

Though she's *so* nuts, it becomes a bit hard for me to say she's not too crazy to count.
