Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

While we're on the subject of the Elder Scrolls, it has been brought up several times but never fully discussed that Queen Akorithi doesn't pass the heinous standard set by the other candidates.

Think you're tough because you made it through Lord of the Rings? Real men survive The Silmarillion.

Emperor Arcturus I Mengsk is initially portrayed as a well-meaning freedom fighter against a corrupt government that murdered his entire family before nuking his entire world, and willing to take morally dubious methods to defeat them such as taking their Psychic Beacons and using them against the Confederacy to lure the Zerg to their bases. But when he leads the assault on Tarsonis and uses these same beacons to lure the Zerg to a heavily populated world, he shows that he’s more fixated with revenge and personal power, sending Kerrigan down to stop the Protoss from distracting the Zerg from wiping out all of the old families and then abandoning her when the Zerg overwhelm her position, resulting in her transformation into the Queen of Blades. Afterwards he uses the power he has gained as Emperor of the newly established Terran Dominion to oppress any political protesters, continue the Confederacy’s experiments on civilians and order the death of the last of the old families, a group of teenagers who weren't even aware of what had happened.

I'd like to expand on this, adding his Heart of the Swarm crimes

1.) Hunting Kerrigan down when she's willing to live a normal life (expressing a willingness to kill his own son in the process; one of the things that caused his fall was the murder of his family) 2.) Cruelly deceives Kerrigan into thinking Raynor was executed and only revealing the truth after Kerrigan gained godlike power and went after him 3.) Sacrifices the crew of the Moros to kill Kerrigan and Raynor while telling her they can burn together 4.) When Kerrigan comes for his head is willing to use NUKES on her forces even though it will cause massive casualties (keep in mind that the SECOND thing that motivated his start of darkness was his homeworld being bombed)

He doesn't have the same level of atrocities as Amon and Duran, but that's because a.) they've been doing it for millennia and b.) they operate on a wider scale. Mengsk is a monster with what he has, and unlike them (who are basically space satan and a fallen angel) Mengsk is just a man with a lust for power. Needless to say his death at Kerrigan's hand is VERY satisfying

I'm not adverse to expanding the entry, but a nitpick:

2.) Cruelly deceives Kerrigan into thinking Raynor was executed and only revealing the truth after Kerrigan gained godlike power and went after him

The way the game presented it to me was more that the only reason he kept Raynor alive in the first place was as a potential hostage; claiming he was executed was more part of the Dominion's Propaganda Machine than a personal act of spite.

Also, that's not the actual writeup, right?

  • [tup] Oaks. What happens to deLarava? Also, I assume the next novel is The Anubis Gates? I think that's the only current one with a CM.
  • [tup] Alduin. I've no opinion either way on the Queen.

So...I have two today. Let's get the bad one out of the way.

I'm not going to bother with a full on EP for this: IT's from the Resident Evil film series and its final, ultimate Big Bad Alexander Isaacs. We first greet Isaacs in an unnamed cameo at the end of the first film when he takes Alice's love interest and puts in the Nemesis Program, which is...unpleasant.

Now, halfway through the film series, Umbrella basically goes out of control and wipes out 90 percent of the human race. When we first meet Isaacs, he's attempting to salvage things, and harness Alice's blood to create a cure to tame the T-Virus, where he's ultimately killed. This, it turns out, was a clone of the real Isaacs who wants very different things.

Int he flashbacks, Isaacs tries to convince Dr. Marcus to use the T-Virus for military purposes. Marcus, who simply wanted to use it to cure diseases, refused in horror. Isaacs had his right-hand man Wesker murder Marcus. In present, Marcus instead convinces Umbrella to unleash the virus globally, with only the rich and powerful surviving while Isaacs freezes them in cryogenic stasis so once the world is 'cleansed,' Isaacs and Umbrella can rebuild the world in their image. He also leaves another clone to deal with Alice and wipe out the human settlements that remain. Said clone spends much of the film pursuing Alice and leading zombies towards her, before the real Isaacs wakes up. At the film's climax, Isaacs is fully planning to wipe out the other survivors, whenAlice and the Red Queen computer get the better of him and Wesker...Isaacs' clone encounters him, and refusing to believe he's not the real one, kills the original with a knife, before the zombies overwhelm him.

So, a weird case, but Isaacs is the ultimate Big Bad of the series, who exterminates most of the human race, tries to have the survivors killed, conducts horrible experiments that kills more people, and has no redeeming qualities beyond an insane messiah complex.

[tup] Alexander Isaacs. Hopefully when this series gets rebooted (because let's face it, they're gonna reboot this franchise like they do everything else) it'll have a better director at the helm.

[up][up] I LIKED the first Mortal Kombat film, I THINK I liked Soldier, and I KNOW I enjoyed Death Race. I've not seen any of the RE films.

[down] I've not seen any of the Underworld films either (surprisingly, actually, as they're action films that have Kate Beckinsale in leather).

[down] Maybe. The three I mentioned are all one-shots. As for Kombat, the game developers do a fine enough job with continuity weirdness as it is [lol]

[up] Then you aren't aware of all the crap everyone has been going through these last fifteen years. The series is about as good as the Underworld film series. Conveniently they both released a sequel in the same month.

[up] Then, again, you are not aware of the crap everyone has been going through these past several years. tongue Resident Evil started off fine, but after the third film, everything just went crazy and made no damn sense. I think Paul W.S. Anderson is better off filming one-shot movies, not making long franchises where the continuity keeps getting bungled up with each sequel. And most of his one-shot movies are Guilty Pleasure (Pompeii), So Bad, It's Good (Mortal Kombat), or passable (Death Race).

[up] I'll get to it...sooner or later. If you want to assist, I'm very grateful

Now, an effortpost from something I do like.

A new villain from the Robert McCammon novel Baal. McCammon is a writer I've proposed multiple villains from in the pas, and he's a terrific novelist...granted, his first few books (including this one) are ones he's not particularly proud of and considers 'rough drafts,' so to speak.

I digress, though...get ready for Baal.

Who Is He?

As a child, Jeffrey Harper Raines was...odd, and took the nickname Baal. A disturbing child who was....off in some ways, Baal's father began to suffer from chronic, terrifying nightmares. Finally snapping, Mr. Raines attempted to murder the child, only for Mrs. Raines to kill him to defend him...resulting in her being locked away, sending Baal to an orphanage....and implied to be the result of his manipulations.

Baal is regularly transferred because of his vulgar, hateful personality, and eventually ends up in a religious orphanage where he begins manipulating many of the children into becoming a cult following him. By the time he was 13, Baal was the ruler of the orphanage, terrorizing staff and nuns alike with horrific nightmares. on the last night of his stay, Baal locks all the staff in their rooms, has his cult of children hold down the head of the place, then rapes a nun in front of him, setting her aflame in the process before having the man ripped to shreds. Baal then selects 9 children to exit the orphanage with him, and leaves the rest, along with the entire staff, to be burned down with the rest.

And so begins the reign of Baal... What's He Done?

Besides all of the above, Baal ages into a man and creates a cult across the world. Many of the followers have been shattered by him mentally, broken down and mind-raped until he is all they care about and believe in. Baal hosts massive orgies and violent riots, with children sometimes being made to participate. Baal then goes full antichrist...hypnotizing a Jewish man into attacking him during a rally, Baal fakes being fatally wounded and when the man is torn to shreds by his enraged followers, Baal rallies the cult around the world to go wild. The cults commence rape, murder, riot, sacrifices held to Baal...and Jews are particularly targeted during all this.

Now, with the world slowly falling into his grasp, Baal follows our heroes, Virga and Michael, to the Arctic, where Baal massacres the adults of a village of Inuits, leads the dozens of children to an ice cave, then seals them in where they freeze to death so nobody interrupts while he handles Virga and Michael who have been trying to stop him.

Baal reveals the truth...there never was a 'Jeffrey Harper Raines.' He didn't take the name Baal out of whimsy. He IS Baal. The original demon himself, who stood with Satan against God and the angels. Back then? The demons actually lived in peace with the angels, but Baal and Satan worked to foment war between them and turn the demons against God. Baal delighted in fucking over humans, notably in the city of Canaan where he ruled over it much like he did with his cult....which included making people sacrifice their own children to him.

When God commanded Canaan destroyed by the Jewish tribes, Baal and Satan were taken down by the angels and sealed away...Baal...hasn't really gotten over his grudge toward the Jews for that one. After a long time, Baal managed to escape, and possessed a man, made him rape Mrs. Raines and then possessed the unborn baby conceived by it. Baal gloats about this to Virga and Michael, proclaims he's going to wipe out the Jews as payback, plunge humankind into evil and depravity and then release Satan to claim earth and torment humanity for all time.

Now, the battle commences as our heroes manage to weaken Baal by shoving him into the arctic waters...Baal is shot with a flare gun and loses control of his powers, while Michael tackles him, both blasted into oblivion by Baal's powers...Baal is destroyed (or sealed away again by the angels after, not made fully clear) and Virga decides to hunt down his most loyal followers who will carry on his will.

Heinous Standard?

Well, this seems redundant... flies well over the base line. Then nukes it. No real competition. Every other villain is subordinate to him, manipulated by him, or Satan, and Satan is long locked away while Baal acts entirely on his own initiative

Mitigating Qualities?

No. The angels and demons were actually living in relative peace at the time until Baal and Satan drove a wedge between them and manipulated the demons into joining their side out of hunger for power.

As for Satan? No villainous friendship. Baal's care for him extends solely because Satan allows him to be his worst and facilitates his evil. He's loyal only insofar as Satan lets him indulge his depravity.

Conclusion?

Keeper.
