Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

The story arc goes to great lengths to describe the dichotomy between Ghaul as a warmongering maniac who ravaged the Last City, and Ghaul as a Cabal hero who rose from nothing and inspired many others within his empire.

...

...Wait, what? So like...they split the mind of Ghaul's essence in half so that one half is evil and the other half is inspirational/good?

I don't know. I don't follow Destiny 2 and only did the EP on Dominus Ghaul because I couldn't sleep one night and was bored, so I watched a playthrough of the campaign. If they did the whole "He's a CM in the base game, but this DLC released many months/years later suddenly changes that!" card, then I won't argue about cutting him.

[tup] for Marek Nester. The guy is a Serial Rapist of little boys; even with a show like this, that's a pretty easy barrier to pass for this.

I haven’t caught up on Destiny 2 but if Ghaul did had the potential to be good but chose to be evil and died staying evil, then I think Ghaul can stay (though his entry may need to be updated) also Any update on Rhulk as he seems like a keeper?

First time with a script proposal, let's see how this goes.

What is the work?

Remember when Spyro the Dragon decided to have a full story... along with mass infanticide, slavery and an Omnicidal Maniac? Well there was plans for a movie based on this trilogy and one of the scripts has recently been released. There's a fair few changes compared to the games so it's different enough to be worth posting I believe but dear god is this cliche as fuck. Our character for today? Resident Big Bad The Dark Master (he's never referred to as Malefor despite obviously meant to being him.)

Script link here

Who is the Dark Master and what has he done

The Dark Master was a purple dragon like Spyro who was meant to be the defender of the realms before succumbing to power and decided to conquer the realms instead. Creating a army of monsters from the ground (the apes are never mentioned in this) he has them raze the realms burning all in their path (the script mentions a lot about the world being charred)

Hearing about a prophecy about a purple dragon who could stop him, The Dark Master sends his armies to raid the dragon temple to bring him the Dragon egg. Although Spyro's egg gets sent away, the Dark Masters soldiers managed to grab an egg... the wrong egg as the Dark Master noticed, resulting with him killing some of his soldiers for failing him before realising he could use this dragon to his end.

Many years later, The Dark Master continue to raze the lands and has his minion Pox to find Spyro resulting in the Dragonfly village he was raised in be attacked. Although Spyro escapes, The Dark Master now realises where Spyro will go to now and sics the young dragon from the egg he had, Cynder, whom he had now twisted with dark magic to become a snarling beast.

Spyro and Sparx end up meeting Hunter who explains the source of the Dark Masters powers, a red gem in which he has the essences of the dragons he slaughters entrapped in there. After Spyro meets Ignitus at the temple and have a Training Montage, Cynder and some Gobelins attack, resulting in Ignitus' death and his essence being trapped by The Dark Master's jewel. Because Cynder had failed to kill Spyro, The Dark Master repeatedly attacks her, reverting her to her child self in which he intends on destroying before The Heroes arrive!

The Dark Master has his armies clash with the good guys in a battle and he personally joins the fight to kill Spyro. Eventually Spyro wins the fight by destroying the gem and The Dark Master disappears in a light? With Pox following him into it. With the Dark Master gone, his armies crumble and the charred lands revert to normal and the Dragon's trapped in the gem are now free with Ignitus showing Spyro his kind. Happy ending yay. Oh and Cynder gets accepted despite knowing that she's been used for evil. The end.

Mitigating Factors?

Nope just a power hungry asshole. He doesn't have any positive relationships with his minions either since he's killed them for failure and treats Pox and Cynder as pets and even tries to kill Cynder in her normal child form for her failure.

Heinous Standard?

Big Bad so sets it and since this is an alternate continuity Malefor and Gaul aren't part of the standard either. Now the gem thing being reverted after his demise? Hunter explains that the dragons are explicitly killed before their essences get trapped and its shown there's hundred of dragons at the end so The Dark Master has a fair bit of death under his belt.

Final Verdict

Meh cliche ass villain (and not even the fun type) but I do believe he makes the cut, barely though

[tup] to Marek Nester and Dark Master

Okay I got a question concerning a villain from the Street Fighter cartoon series.

His name Raymond Wang, a one shot villain a movie director who's secretly a drug trafficker working for a crime lord named Mr. Singh. He gets his money from kidnapping people off the street and send them to a work camp so he could manufacture and mass produce drugs so he could get money to make more films. He has his men force the people they kidnapped to work, Ryu even explicitly says should he and Ken fight back or try to escape then the guards will show no hesitation in shooting down the prisoners as punishment. And the amount of people kidnapped are by truckloads too.

He has fuck all resources, he's not a One-Man Army superhuman like Akuma (who also stringer than M. Bison himself) or a leader of a global terrorist group like M. Bison. Hell, he's not a martial artist with superpowers like most Street Fighter villains, just some movie director with connections with a crime lord and runs like one drug factory run through slavery.

My only question is his slavery onscreen enough on its own for him to count for this Trope? I had to rewatch the episode multiple times, I don't get anything explicitly showing or hinting about how the kidnapped victims are treated. The act is treated very seriously and with some horror to it, and made explicitly clear multiple times the guards are fully willing to kill the rest of the prisoners if Ken and Ryu try escaping or fight back. The episode can be found here.

I'm asking this question because we did rejected Castor and Pollux from the Dalmatians due to their crimes not being made explicit enough to make them count and I worried if Raymond himself might suffer the same scenario.

[up] No, I've watched the series to the end but I haven't spot a single villain conducting slavery before besides Raymond.

[down][down] I only remember that most of the villains are standard, Sagat did start a coup in a country but I don't think it ever mentioned any casualties or people dying as most of the people evacuated. I know there was another villain but I don't remember what she did but she does have higher resources than Raymond. I think that's about it.

[up][up] I think the slaves being kidnapped via the truckload then to be slaughtered by the guards might enough...? I'd say that's baseline sorted out but whats the standard like for the show not including Bison and Akuma?
