Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I'll say yes to Nate.

Ok, with no objections...from Fables? We need to cut Hansel, the sadistic torturer, murderer and fanatical witch hunter....unfortunately, the first issue of ''Everafter' shows Hansel teaming up with the the husband-and-wife team of Bo Peep and Peter Piper to track down a dangerous witch. Hansel, of course, betrays them and it turns out that the witch is a little girl. Hansel is ready to kill her...but admits that even he is moved by having to kill a child, and is shown visibly crying as he levels the gun at her. Seconds before she flicks her wrist and blasts him into a red stain all over the walls.

So...there we go.

@Scraggle: It's a HECK of alot better than most of the novel's I propose villains from, so yeah, I'd say it's a fairly good read overall. Got some interesting lore, a nice family dynamic, a cool friendship between Jack and Lonetree, a truly creepy villain in Nate....yeah, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

@username: The Source isn't Made of Evil, but it's more of a Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds. Turns out, a LONG time ago, it was a jerk Shaman who caused alot of death in his time, however, he was sealed away and turned into, for all intents and purposes, a slave to anyone who feeds it innocent girls. By the end, it's MIND doesn't really WANT to keep eating people, but it's BODY does it anyway, keeping him alive when he REALLY doesn't enjoy it.

Tonight I dine on monkey soup.

[tup]Nate.

Also, since he's been mostly upvoted, here's Ming's write-up.

  • Flash Gordon: Ming the Merciless is the tyrannical emperor of planet Mongo. Every thousand years, Ming tests the life forms of the universe, terrorizing any planet he comes across for his own amusement. If he is recognized as responsible for these catastrophes, he deems the planet and its inhabitants a threat to his rule and destroys it. Setting his sights on terrorizing, and ultimately annihilating, Earth, Ming plagues the planet by triggering a series of natural disasters, causing mass chaos and destruction. The inhabitants of Mongo fare little better under his rule, as Ming is quick to kill them and destroy their kingdoms should they displease him. When earthlings Flash Gordon, Dale Arden, and Dr. Zarkov are brought before him, Ming lusts after Dale and attempts to force her to be his concubine, ordering Flash executed when he stands against him. He later attempts to brainwash Zarkov, all the while gloating about his plans to destroy Earth. His cruelty extends even to his own daughter, Aura; when he discovers that Aura has helped Flash escape his kingdom, Ming has no qualms with allowing his men to torture her to extract a confession. Upon locating Flash at Sky City, Ming has the kingdom obliterated, before attempting to force Dale to marry him, mentioning his plans to cast her off once he's grown weary of her.

[tdown] To the Blind Man, Hansel and Tarn.

I read Elektra Assassin recently and I have to ask, how do we judge characters from stories that are just really confusing? I think the main villain of that story, the Beast, may count, but that story comes off as a fever dream, its Frank Miller taking True Art Is Incomprehensible to some crazy new level.

I was also thinking of bringing up Juno Skinner from True Lies. While Salim Abu Aziz believes what he's doing is justified, she's only in it for the money. Unless somebody wants to tell me why she doesn't count or something. Was she ever discussed before? If not, I'm surprised.

@Klavice: I'll be handling any effortposts for Spirit of Justice when the time comes (I'm already on Case 3). Once I've beaten the game I wouldn't mind having a preliminary discussion on the villain via PM's if you want.

In the meantime, I'll sadly agree to cut Hansel. I've never been a fan of contradictory redeeming qualities popping up from nowhere (Looking at you, Mayuri), but I guess he's gotta go.

I found a NCE on Hornets' Nest.

Reading the summary of the film on wikipedia, Taussig is a Nazi commander who massacres an entire village. He probably counts, but I'd say cut for now.

Alright, time for the first proposal. Movie's the 1997 George Clooney/Nicole Kidman thriller The Peacemaker, and the candidate is the antagonist of the movie's first half, General Aleksander Kodoroff.

Who is Kodoroff? What has he done?

Kodoroff is a renegade Russian general hinted to still bitter over the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This isn't where his main motives lie, however; to get of of the crumbling system he commands, Kodoroff strikes a deal with the Russian mafia to deliver nine nuclear warheads to Dusan Gavric, who intends to use them to bomb the UN headquarters in retribution for the loss of his family in the Yugoslav wars. Kodoroff doesn't give a damn about where the nukes are headed nor what they're being used for, and is interested solely in making a profit.

In the first fifteen minutes of the movie, Kodoroff establishes himself as a colossal asshole. After commanding his men to start a shipment of ten of the warheads, Kodoroff, with the help of another rogue soldier in the shipment train, ambushes the shipment train with several of his men from another train. Kodoroff has his men gun down every single soldier inside (later established to be forty casualties), take nine of the nukes onto his train, then sets the shipment train with the remaining warhead (which he's now set to be active) onto a crash course with a passenger train inhabited with a bunch of innocents while he and his men head out with the stolen warheads. The trains crash head-on, killing dozens, and then the warhead Kodoroff rigged sets off, resulting in a massive explosion that wipes out the entire area, kills the survivors of the train crash, and overall kills over 1,500 people, leaving fallout that'll affect all of Russia and Northern Europe. His reason for doing all this? Simply for the reason of creating a diversion to cover his own path. Once the rogue agent expresses horror at what Kodoroff has just done, Kodoroff berates him for it and tells him to "be strong." Once the soldier quietly states he can't meet up with Kodoroff's demands and is in fact terrified for his life, Kodoroff simply says "pity" and murders him with a shot to the chest and head without an ounce of emotion on his face.

Kodoroff and his men start the long course to driving the stolen nukes to Iran. Kodoroff meets with his business partner - the brother of Gavric - and threatens him should he not prove his use to him. As the protagonists Julia Kelly and officer Tom Devoe start investigating the plot which results in the bulk of the movie, Kodoroff and his cohorts drive across Russia. Kelly and Devoe eventually manage to track him as the culprit for the explosion and start pursuing him.

Near the Iran border, Kodoroff's vehicle is stopped at a Russian checkpoint. Although Kodoroff initially tries to simply weasel out of it with a lie and an order to the sergeant he nominally commands, increased suspicion from the checkpoint's guards lead Kodoroff to simply shoot the sergeant who's questioning him dead and have his men completely slaughter the guard force there, as well as a car who'd just pulled up behind him and committed no further crime except be on the crime scene. As Kodoroff finally starts to approach the border, Devoe and some soldiers take him off guard. Kodoroff orders them shot down, a shootout ensues, and through an explosion on the road, Kodoroff's truck is left dangling on the side of the bridge. Devoe and Kodoroff fight before Devoe finally gets the upper hand and Kodoroff is shot by one of the soldiers on the helicopter. When Devoe furiously asks the dying Kodoroff where the terrorists he's aligned with are heading, Kodoroff's final words are a defiant "fuck you" before the warheads are secured and Kodoroff and his driver are left to blow up in the plummeting vehicle.

Any mitigating factors?

The closest thing Kodoroff gets to a redeeming quality is a brief aside to his mistress which he's briefly established as calling daily and having a sexual relationship with. Not once is this relationship more than vaguely touched on. We don't see Kodoroff call her, talk to her, or even bring her up onscreen, and the point is mostly just used to establish Kodoroff did in fact not die on the exploding trains. No onscreen redeeming factors here.

Aside from that, Kodoroff is the most heinous character in the movie. Gavric has a legitimate excuse and is a pretty tragic character overall. Kodoroff, on the other hand, is nothing but a greedy asshole who'd betray his own nation and kill thousands for a buck. He even outright states he has a virulent hatred of refugees purely because they're poor. All in all, Kodoroff's a thoroughly irredeemable asshole despite technically only being the delivery boy for Gavric's scheme.

Conclusion?

Keeper.

Thoughts?

Here's the effort post for Juno from True Lies:

Juno Skinner is an antiques dealer with ties to terrorism. She is hired by Crimson Jihad to help assist them in their terror plot against the country and assists them when they're posing as workers to help them into the country. She uses ancient artifacts to help them smuggle several warheads into America. Juno clearly has no stake in their plan and while she is not exactly planning these things herself, she helps give them the means to do it all without any care of the consequences.

She takes part in Harry Tasker and his wife Helen's abduction and has them both stunned on her plane. While she answers primarily to Aziz and takes his orders without question, it's clear that she's only putting up with them because she's been bribed to do so ("Well it's a good thing you're paying me a lot of money.") She later reiterates this to Harry right as she is having him drugged with a truth serum and prepared for brutal torture ("What did you think that I cared about their cause? Or yours?"). Harry responds to this with "You're damaged goods lady."

She helps Crimson Jihad to set off one of the weapons in the Florida Keys as a demonstration of power. When Harry is later seemingly killed, she taunts Helen and then when Helen hits her, Juno nearly shoots her in the head. She's only stopped by Aziz insisting that Helen still be a hostage.

Later in Juno's limo, she casually asks Helen if she likes wine, further emphasizing that her goal is only to get rich and shows no remorse for the millions of people who could be nuked in the process. A struggle ensues between the two women during which her driver is shot. Juno attempts to get back her gun and shoot Helen but when that fails, she resorts to trying to strangle her. Helen gains the upper hand and is barely able to escape the out of control limo in time with Harry's help before it goes over the destroyed bridge and into the ocean with Juno still in it.

It's not much, but I say tentative [tup]. God I love that movie.

[up]Aside from shooting and taking people hostage, there's planning the nuclear attacks. They believe what they're doing is right though (or think it is justified). Juno on the other hand played the part in helping them get the weapons in and is willing to turn a blind eye to their planned attacks just to satisfy her own greed. Most of the bad things that happen is because she helped them to do it all...for money.

I'm leaning no on Juno out of concerns for heinousness and the fact True Lies is fundamentally a very comedic take on the typical action film formula.

[up]In the context of the film though, the nuclear threat is taken seriously. While Aziz is the main antagonist, everything that happens is because Juno made it possible.

Having never heard of this film, I'd like another party to weigh on Scraggle's post about it being comedic, since this has been an issue before.

I'm also inclined to agree that, whether he himself qualifies or not, a guy launching nuclear attacks tends to skew the heinousness standard pretty high.
